For many conference organisers andevent planners a meeting in Darwin islong overdue and they, as much asthe delegates, are looking forwardto the opening of the city’s first purposebuilt convention centre.

Confirming Darwin for their annualconference in 2009, President of theAustralian Veterinary Association (AVA)Dr Kersti Seksel, said the 2009 event is justthe beginning of a long-term relationshipwith the Darwin Convention Centre as theyplan to return on a regular basis.

“This will be the first time in over 25 yearsthat our annual conference will be held inDarwin. Our conference has continued togrow and there has not been a venue big

enough to accommodate us since then,”said Dr Seksel.

“We will now add the Darwin ConventionCentre to our national rotation and will beback here every few years. It’s a good sizefor us – we get a bit lost in some of thelarger venues and are then too cramped inothers. At the Darwin Convention Centre,we will be able to fill all of the conventionspace and still have the flexibility to growthe trade exhibition as necessary. ”

Expecting to attract over 900 delegates,Dr Seksel credits the friendly people, amazing sunsets and the variety of placesto explore that make Darwin so attractiveto their members.

On the edge of the Arafura sea, Australia’smost northern capital city, Darwin, is asclose to Singapore as it is to Sydney withboth reached just as easily. Darwin’sInternational Airport offers direct flightsfrom Asia and all major cities in Australia.

Darwin’s colour, vibrancy and energy exudefrom its people, with over 50 nationalitiesrepresented in a population of 100,000.The city is progressive and booming witha rich Aboriginal and European history. It boasts first class restaurants,a wide range of accommodation anddistinctive attractions such as; theMindil Beach night markets and theoutdoor Deckchair Cinema.

Home to the Larrakia people, Darwin is thegateway to the outback, the World Heritagelisted Kakadu National Park, thespectacular waterfalls of LitchfieldNational Park and Katherine Gorge. All thisadds up to a truly unique and memorableexperience for national and internationalconvention delegates.
