professional goals

Executive Summary

As a soon to be graduate in Corporate Communications, my professional goals are to

procure a position in a Public Affairs or Communications department within an organization

whose primary purpose is to help make a positive difference in the world. I would like to work

for an organization or school where I can best use my abilities to help facilitate effective two-

way communication, organize events, fundraise, and support initiatives that benefit children.

Through my current internship and job, and my desire to learn as much as I can in whatever

position I am in, I hope to gain enough experience and knowledge to someday work at a non-

profit where I can best use my abilities to have the greatest impact to help drive communications

in a business that benefits society. I hope to achieve both my short-term and long-term goals

through a variety of past and current experiences – organizing children’s events and fundraisers,

being a supervisor in a local business, or being a trusted camp counselor – as well as planning for

future employment after I receive my degree. Every bit of knowledge helps on the path to my

career goal.

My Professional Domain(s)

As a communications professional, I hope to focus my energy and passion in an area that

I have both a personal and professional interest – combining my communications and

organizational skills, my ability to work well with children and my desire to work in an

organization that benefits society. In addition to trying to procure employment in a corporate

environment, I will target businesses that focus – in whole or in part – on enhancing the lives of

children. This can be an organization as dedicated to children and as single-focused as the

Ronald McDonald House, as varied in its mission as the Newtown Athletic Club, which has a

1

dedicated program and staff for children (where I am currently interning), or as global reaching

as UNICEF or Save the Children. I will also explore local school districts and communications

jobs in that realm. I want to gain a better understanding of how these organizations contribute to,

and enhance, the communities they serve.

My Specific Target Audience(s)

As I begin my career, I plan to explore jobs in Communications and Event Coordination,

as I really enjoy helping to produce events. I would also like to know more about fundraising

and grant writing, as well as planning larger events. I would consider another internship to gain

further knowledge and experience.

I also have contacts in a meetings management firm that coordinates many events in the

Philadelphia area. I had the opportunity to shadow one of the staff at a multi-day event last year,

and it was quite an interesting experience. I hope that by next year I am able to work more for

them, even if short-term, to learn more about what goes into planning and implementing large

events, managing staff, and developing promotional and presentation materials. Since I am able

to handle multiple responsibilities, it would be interesting to have a job that combines a scope of

activities. This experience would serve me well in the future, as event coordination would

definitely benefit a non-profit group that hosts fundraising and community awareness events.

Many larger corporations also have a division that coordinates grants and charitable

giving. In addition to getting to spend some of a company’s profits on doing good things in the

world, it would be great to be a part of a larger organization. I want to be a part of a team that

helps to make a difference.

My Present Day Professional Positioning

I have a variety of accomplishments that are relevant to my professional goals. First, I

am on-track to complete my degree in 3 years, rather than the typical 4 years that most students

take. I am doing this by taking classes during semester breaks, both in class and on-line. I am

currently working and taking 4 classes over the summer to expedite my degree. I am responsible

and motivated, and if I decide that I want to do something I always accomplish it.

I am currently in an internship at a very large athletic club where I am organizing

children’s events and dozens of parties a week. Just a few weeks into my internship, my

manager proposed that I write a business plan for a summer sleep away camp. I researched and

provided a feasibility assessment to the club owner, which was very well received. I have

discovered some inefficiency in the management and coordination of events planning there, and

have increased sales in a few months through effective selling and persuasive overview

presentations to customers. I was even asked to train and guide two new full-time staff in my

department even though I am an intern. I gladly accepted the task, and my manager explained

that my ability to quickly assess a program and its processes helped him make that decision.

I am also a nanny for two children, and the family often tells me how valuable I am to

them, helping them organize their lives and busy schedules while both parents are working full-

time, demanding jobs. As a camp counselor for a few years, I gained valuable experience in

guiding and entertaining 15 children at a time, so having 2 children in my care is easy.

Prior to this, I was a shift supervisor at a local business, a busy ice cream shop, which

involved customer service, management of employees, and inventory management. I always

strive to do the best job possible in whatever position I am in, and this was reflected in my

3

promotion to supervisor in a little over two months. I was supervising people who had been

there two years.

I feel that every job, no matter how trivial it may seem, helps to develop my

interpersonal, organizational and communications skills. I have the energy, the passion, and the

work ethic to do the best job possible.

My Five Year Strategy

As I currently have a few different areas I am interested in, I am going to pursue as many

opportunities that come along. One of my goals is to work for an organization where I could be

a part of a team that helps make a difference in the lives of children, but I am also interested in

event planning and coordination. I’d love to try to combine these interests in some way. After

gaining experience in a variety of work environments, I hope to bring my skills and my passion

to an organization that is committed to the well being of those in need. By learning as much as I

can, I will be able to advance and communicate the mission of the organization through a variety

of effective channels to illustrate the benefits that organization brings to society.

My Tactical Approach over Six Months, 2 Years and 5 Years

In the near term, I plan on continuing to learn as much as I can at my current internship,

expanding my skills at organizing and planning events, and gaining management experience. I

will also focus on getting the best grades possible and completing my degree, while juggling my

work schedule in order to accommodate my classes.

In two years, I hope to be working a full-time job in an organization, a non-profit, or a

school district, gaining further experience in community engagement programs, fundraising, and

4

planning effective communications on websites and through social media channels. As I am

comfortable with presenting to an audience, I think that would greatly benefit my employer. I

will also continue to take courses to enhance my skillset. This would include continuing

education classes in graphic design, as I believe it would be important to have a solid

understanding of visual communication as well.

In five years I see myself managing a program in a corporation or a non-profit where I

can contribute to society by working to advance and promote the social well being of children.

One of my dreams is to work for an agency such as UNICEF, where I could be a part of a team

that helps to make a difference in the lives of thousands of children.

Conclusion

Through my determination and work ethic, I am on my way to achieving my goals. I

hope to continue to grow and learn something new in every job I undertake, whether it’s people

skills, management of events, or learning a new software or system. While I enjoy writing,

organizing, and planning events, I can’t deny that I also really enjoy my work with children.

I hope to be able to combine my interests into a career that will be fulfilling and enjoyable, as

well as worthwhile to society.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BUDDY BEDDING FOUNDATION RECEIVES $200,000 GRANT TO PROVIDE NEW BEDDING AND MATTRESSES FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

Philadelphia, PA – Buddy Bedding Foundation has received a $200,000 grant from the Bill and

Melinda Gates Foundation, according to Jill Smith, director of Public Affairs for the non-profit

organization. The grant was awarded at a gathering honoring Philadelphians who take positive action in

their own communities.

As the primary grant writer for the organization, Dana Scott has been successful in procuring

funds that will total in excess of $500,000 this year. Ms. Scott stated, “I am thrilled and honored that the

Gates Foundation believes in our mission and has awarded our foundation this generous grant. The

benefit to families and children in our area will be incredible. Many families that we help have very old

bedding, insufficient blankets and pillows, and sadly, not enough beds for the number of children in the

household. Our Foundation strives to help make children’s lives better by providing new mattresses, as

well as new, colorful bedding so that children can enjoy what their more fortunate counterparts do – a

good, restful night’s sleep.”

The money will be immediately used to benefit local families and their children who are on a

waiting list to receive new bedding.
