The month of February has many dimensions. The potpourri includes: Groundhog Day; Presidents’ Day; Valentine’s Day; National Margarita Day; sometimes an extra day (leap year!); Chinese New Year; Black History Month; World Cancer Day; World Day of the Sick; World Day of Social Justice; Mardi Gras; and Ash Wednesday. In addition, this year’s special event line-up will include: NFL Super Bowl LII; SOUPER Bowl of Caring; a baptism; Circle of Concern Mission Moment; Lenten Canned Food Drive; Chili Supper; and XXIII Olympic Winter Games!

As one can see, the second month of 2018 is going to be a full one! This February’s greatest significance in the life of God’s Church will be the start of the 2018 Lenten Season. All told, there is no Christian occasion of deeper spirituality than Lent. The 40-day spiritual walk from Ash Wednesday to Resurrection Day is a soul-building stretch.

In 1992, Father Henri Nouwen wrote a book entitled, “Show Me the Way.” This book is a collection of reflection pieces intended to serve as daily inspirational readings for the Lenten Season. Father Nouwen’s original work provides us with a segmented format for pursuing and living God’s Way (Psalm 139:24; First Corinthians 12:31; John 14:6). This view is of great help to me. I confess

that I struggle to resist being personally overwhelmed by Lent as a lengthy and highly demanding season. Approaching Lent piecemeal, then, enables me to deal with this drawn out, gargantuan season by chipping away at it. In a very helpful manner, Father Nouwen portrays the Lenten journey as an extended opportunity for growing in relationship with and in devotion to God.

Indeed, each Lenten Season is such an opportunity; an occasion loaded with potential. The holy season is a pilgrimage. Central features of this faith journey are repentance and prayer. The biblical verb “to repent” (Old Testament Hebrew “shub”; New Testament Greek “metanoia”) means “to turn.” Lent is largely about turning; that is, about repentance. Christian hope is that humankind will take a turn for the better. Turn away from evil. Turn toward God. Return to God.

I share with you some lovely, reassuring thoughts from Marianne Williamson in her work Illuminata: A Return to Prayer (1994): “Human strength alone is incapable of working miracles… At every moment, we are somewhere along the road of the journey of the Son of God… God’s power is the power to reverse all physical laws.

The Ivy Vine, February 2018 2 Ivy Chapel UCC • 620 N Woods Mill Rd www.ivychapel.org www.facebook.com/IvyChapel Chesterfield, MO 63017 • 314-434-4991

By ourselves, of course, we are without this power. Through God’s power within us, we are workers of miracles and the seedlings of a transformed humanity... To be a seeker still implies that there is a road to be found… At a certain point, the seeker becomes a pilgrim. We are no longer looking for the road, but we are on the road… The pilgrimage is a process… Prayer is the pilgrim’s walking stick. We pray for the capacity to forgive, to see the innocence in people and to surrender all things to God… The highest level of prayer is not a prayer for anything. It is a deep and profound silence, in which we allow ourselves to be still and know God. In that silence, we are changed. We are calmed. We are illumined… Still it is not enough to believe in God’s power; we must wish to serve it, to elongate the light. We must give our lives to God, that God might use us in God’s work.”

This Lent, perhaps you and I could make World

Famine Activitiesour ‘walking stick’ a prayer on the order of this one by Marianne Williamson:

Dear God, Thank You for this new day, its beauty and its light. Thank You for my chance to begin again. Free me from the limitations of yesterday. Today may I be reborn. May I become more fully a reflection of Your radiance. Give me strength and compassion and courage and wisdom. Show me the light in myself and others. May I recognize the good that is available everywhere. May I be, this day, an instrument of love and healing. Lead me into gentle pastures. Give me deep peace that I might serve You most deeply.

Amen.

In silence and in calmness, may we give our lives to God on the road.

May your cup overflow with the joy of serving God, Pastor Dan

Attention all Ivy Chapel Members

Deacons are trying something new. The Welcomers have been eliminated in the new 2018 Lay Schedule (see new Lay Ministry sheet in this newsletter) because we feel we are all welcomers.

Please read the new lay leader sheets when you receive them by e-mail. The new Greeter instruction sheet has incorporated some of former Welcomer instructions. Please be aware of new people.

Make all welcome at Ivy Chapel. Try to answer any questions they have and log them into our log book in the sanctuary. Thank you so much for being who Ivy Chapel is. If you can not be at present on your assigned Sunday please try to switch with someone who has the same job before you call the contact person. Thank you again. ~The Deacons Board

Chili Dinner Fundraiser, February 17th

In just a few short weeks Ivy Chapel will be holding the first fundraiser of 2018. Please save the date and let friends and family know about it. As in the past, we are going to ask for donations of brownies for the desserts at the dinner. We also will need lots of volunteers to help on February 16th and 17th to set up, cook, serve, and clean up. Sign-up sheets for those jobs will be in the Narthex. Call Janet (314-640-0643) or Bruce (314-640-4902) with any questions. See pocket flyer on page 6

Ivy Youth In Action

Ash Wednesday is February 14. Lenten Resources for Children, Teens, and Adults will be available on the table in the Narthex or see Linda Lowry.

February 4, 2018

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, Matthew 25:35

John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." Luke 3:11

On Sunday, February 4, following worship our youth will be standing near the doors at the rear of the sanctuary holding soup pots for your donations to SOUPER BOWL OF CARING - the nationwide effort to help the hungry. Cash donations as well as donations of non perishable food items are welcome. The youth of Ivy Chapel will use these donations during our World Vision Famine lock-in to purchase needed items for local missions.

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 1 John 3:17

LENTEN CANNED FOOD OFFERING February 14 – April 1

We “can” help feed the hungry. Thanks for the wonderful response we have had in the past several years during our Lenten Food Drive. The youth of Ivy Chapel and the Christian Action Board are sponsoring our 5th Annual Lenten Canned Food drive during the weeks leading up to Easter. Let’s help fill the shelves this Lent. During the Sundays in Lent we will be collecting canned goods for area food pantries. Watch for more information coming soon. Collection begins the first Sunday in Lent, February 18, and runs through Easter, April 1.

Bring money for bowling (see the weekly Ivy Youth in Action page for prices). Please RSVP to Linda Lowry. Come – watch and visit with other Ivy Chapel folks!**

YOUTH SUMMER 2018 MISSION TRIP

Our Summer 2018 Youth Mission Trip Informational/Planning meeting was held on Sunday, January 14, following worship. We have narrowed the time frame and hopefully everyone will be able to participate in this exciting service/mission opportunity. We have one week that works for everyone and one that is tentative. We are currently looking at two different mission trip organizations. This trip is for youth completed grades 8 – 12. An e-mail was sent to all interested youth recapping the meeting. We appreciate everyone’s input. Please let Linda Lowry know if you will be going on this trip so that we can finalize our plans.

Adults will also be needed to accompany the youth on their trip. If you are interested in participating in the trip or have any ideas of Ivy Chapel members that you think would be great sponsors for the trip feel free to attend today’s meeting or let me know.

New Year's Resolutions. I have never been the type of person to do New Year's Resolutions. Maybe, it’s because I don't like to set myself up for failure, but I like to think it’s because I'm constantly a work in process. I am constantly trying to better myself. Sure, I fail. I make mistakes a lot. Don't we all. I yell more than I like. I get upset about other's actions and God knows I am late all the time (which is in direct correlation with the yelling). I need to keep reminding myself, without failure, there is no success. When my kids were young, we had a onesie that had a caterpillar and on it said "God's not finished with me yet." It was cute, because all know that the caterpillar will one day turn into a beautiful butterfly. I repeatedly tell myself "I don't know what I want to be when I'm grown up." We do not yet know what our big metamorphosis will be.. but we do know "God is not finished with us yet." Who knows. maybe I'll finally get it together to be on time! It reminds me of one of my favorite hymns. "Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see" So, with that, I put all my failures and all my promises into God's hands. He knows what I want to be when I grow up, and I can't wait to find out how He uses me to do His work here on earth.

On the music front, the choir is back in action. We've been working on some old favorites that I know you'll love. If you want to join us, we could use some extra voices during the spring semester! Pretty soon is our Fat Tuesday anthem. I usually like to pull something exciting before we go into Lent. I call it my party song. But, don't worry. I have got some great tunes to guide us through our Lenten journey. Thanks as always to the ever faithful choir members and all of the congregation for your never ending support. Lots of love. Until next time...

Vacation Bible School – Call for Volunteers

The Christian Education Board is working on plans for VBS and we need to know how many people are available to help. There are many opportunities for you to help: decorating, leading stations, leading groups of kids, teaching Bible stories, making snacks or organizing the whole shebang. Vacation Bible School will be the last full week of July 2018: 7/23-7/27. Please contact Linda Lowry or Sarah Heend if you can help us in any way.

Praying that this Lenten Season will find the world devoted to

“learning more of Christ” (Matthew 11:29) and result in a

deepening commitment to serving God.

The Mary and Martha Group met on January 16th and made the following plans for 2018.

Feb. – Lenten Study and Devotion with Pastor Dan Wilson

Mar.– Presentation and Discussion on Race Relations with Pat Winship, who taught in Jennings

Apr. - Assist with Rummage Sale? (or other program)

May – Plant Sale

June – Women’s Luncheon

July – No Meeting

Aug. – Program to be decided – Aug. 26th Dessert for a Dollar

Sept. – Program to be decided

It was also decided to explore an ‘extra’ project for Isaiah 58 Ministries, such as birthday supplies. We also want to order custom T-Shirts for Seven Pines Emmaus Home from the Teen Boys who do this work through UP (formerly Neighborhood Houses). We may consider a project for Lydia’s House when we hear from them as to their needs.

Lectionary readings from: http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/

It’s hard to believe that 2018 is already under way. Although Gods work continues, the New Year gives us all an opportunity to regroup and have a fresh start. The Trustees are no exception. Remember we are here to serve God by providing you and your family a safe, nurturing and inviting facility. We encourage everyone to participate and make suggestions. If you are walking through Ivy’s grounds or the Church and something catches your eye; or perhaps, something has annoyed you for some time, please feel free to speak with any of the Trustees. We take all requests and concerns seriously and will do our best to make improvements.

This year’s Trustee Board would like to welcome Tom Glenn. Tom, thank you for accepting this new challenge. The 2018 Board will be led by our fearless leader, Frank Purviance (Chair, Council Rep. & Nominating), Gary Lindhorst (Secretary), Tom Glenn (Budget), Mark Gerdes (Special Projects) and Bruce Wilking (Fellowship). We all look forward to Gods direction and will serve faithfully towards the desired outcome. Please join us in the care for Gods house.

All-Church Hwy Clean-up

Please plan to join us the following Sundays to help with highway clean-up after Coffee Fellowship:

These are quarterly dates. Watch for them in KYP

and The Ivy Vine Be sure to bring your gloves and a change of clothes.

Sunday School Open House

Have you thought about teaching Sunday school, but really don’t know where to start? February is the month to visit a Sunday school class and see what it’s all about. Experience firsthand the enthusiasm of our children and youth, and see how you can share God’s teachings with them. If you are inspired after your visit and want to teach, we make it easy for you. The curriculum is online and has lessons for all age groups. Our teachers usually teach one Sunday a month, or we can work out a schedule that works for you. Contact any of our teachers or Sarah Heend, 314-283-5215, if you are interested in visiting a class.
