From the Principal’s Desk NATURE PLAY BUSY BEE What a tremendous effort from all parents and staff who took part in the busy bee last Saturday. A great deal was accomplished thanks to the hard work of our energec volunteers. In fact an addional zone was cleared ready for the next phase of this plan. Our next busy bee is now planned for Saturday, 7 May where we plan to tackle the task of laying in logs and steppers. It would be fantasc to have another great turnout of volunteers for this next stage. See inside for further informaon regarding the busy bee. PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS It was pleasing to see so many parents take the opportunity to meet with their child’s class teacher on Tuesday. I certainly hope that parents were able to gain some further insight into how their child has started the 2016 school year and some ideas and strategies to further assist them in their learning journey. I would also like to thank all classroom teachers for their work in preparing for this event. The process is a challenging one with so many interviews staged across the aſternoon. However, all teachers see and value this process and the opportunity to share with parents their child’s progress. SWIMMING LESSONS In-term swimming lessons are almost finished. Aſter some minor adjustments to cater for bus travel, the program has run well with students seling into roune. Swimming cerficates are expected to be completed and forwarded home with students tomorrow aſternoon. Thank you to all parents for your support with swimming lessons and especially to those parents who have assisted at the pool. ANZAC DAY SERVICE Our school ANZAC Day service was held this morning in the quadrangle. The service was a solemn and moving occasion with input from student speakers, our school choir, prefects and guest speaker veteran Brian Haseldine. See inside for further informaon. ANZAC Service 2016

It was a privilege to be a part of the Dalmain ANZAC service this morning. The Prefects ran the service with poise and great confidence, ensuring the service was conducted in a respectful manner. Mr Brian Haseldine from North Beach RSL, a regular speaker at our ANZAC service, gave a touching speech about Private Simpson and his donkey. The children were captivated by this story of mateship and courage. The choir performed two songs - “ON EVERY ANZAC DAY” highlighting the contribution of Indigenous soldiers, followed by SONG OF AUSTRALIA. Special accolades go to Julian Tearney - violin soloist and Megan Williams and Josephine Clark who each had a solo singing part. The children from PP - Year 6 displayed exemplary manners throughout the service and the many adults present commented on their behaviour. Special thanks to Kirsten Perry for the display of ex-servicemen’s photos from the Dalmain community - the

number of families sharing their memories grows each year. Thanks to Mrs Pinakis for preparing the choir for

another stellar performance and to all the teachers for increasing their students awareness about ANZAC

day.

Nature Play Space Busy Bee

The Busy Bee on Saturday 2nd April was a huge success. A big thanks to everyone who turned up to help prepare the site for our Nature Play Area. The amount of work we completed wouldn't have been possible without all the help we received.

While it was hard work, it was still a rewarding day conducted in good spirit and humour. We should be very proud of our school community. The main works were marking the site up with the layout of the design, using a turf cutter to remove lawn, then others assisting rolling the turf, placing it in wheelbarrows and emptying this into the skip bin and piling it outside the school gates for later removal. We also moved the logs that had been cut into steppers and had the expert skills of two parents using a mini bobcat and kanga to move soil and turf. You have probably noticed the resultant large pile of dirt outside the school gates. Thanks too for those that provided refreshments and a sausage sizzle to keep everyone going. We look forward to working again with our school community at the next busy bee for this project for our children. The next busy bee will be at the start of Term 2. At the next busy bee we will be taking delivery of and installing the wooden logs and structures. It won't be too long till our children can play in this space. If you want up to date information you can follow our Facebook page 'Dalmain Nature Play & D.U.G. (Dalmain Urban Garden)'. Glass Jars with Lids

TA 8 would appreciate any

clean glass jars with screw top lids

that we could use for science.

Thank you,

Mrs Winterton

The Dalmain Chess Club will commence once again in term 2. Any students in Yrs 3-6 who are interested in playing chess are encouraged to come and see me in the library to sign up at the beginning of term 2. It would be advantageous if the students already know how to play chess. If would be greatly appreciated if there is a parent/carer or grandparent in the school community who would be willing to help with the Chess Club on Wednesdays. Students are to come to the library as soon as they are released from class and to bring their lunch with them so games can get under away immediately. Note: This is the only time that students are allowed to bring food into the library. I would encourage parents/carers of students playing chess to take the time to sit and have a friendly game with their child to help strengthen their skills and strategies or else students can go to www.chess.com and play against the computer.

Donations For Art Room

The Dalmain art program is looking for some donations. It would be a great help if anyone has any of the following: - Yarn acrylic or wool, in any sizes (bulky, thin fluffy yarn) that they are willing to donate to the knitting club for next term it would be greatly appreciated. These do not need to be new balls/cones or skeins- leftovers are also welcome.

- Electric slow cooker (with ceramic bowl) in good working order that they are able to donate to the art department that too would be greatly appreciated. It will be used for dying fiber in an art/science joint project.

- Also, as part of the art/science dying project we also need Jumbo glass, lidded coffee jars (or similar). Jumbo jars with screw lids are also welcome. Thanks in advance,

Ms Wise Art Teacher
