Two Card Compare
Use playing cards with jokers and face cards removed. This game is played like “War”. Each player turns over two cards and adds the numbers together quickly. The person with the highest sum keeps all of the cards. Repeat until one player has the entire deck. You can do subtraction also, and you can change it where the person who has the lowest sum or difference keeps the cards.
Turn Over Ten
This game works on combinations that make 10, which is a helpful strategy in addition. Use number cards from a card deck or digit cards attached (they would need to be printed on colored paper so you can’t see through them). The game is played like memory. All cards are turned face down. Players take turns turning over two cards. If the two cards equal 10 then you keep them and go again. If they don’t you turn them over and it is the other players turn. The person with the most matches at the end wins.
Roll 3 Dice
Each player rolls 3 dice and adds the numbers together. The person with the highest (or low-est) sum gets a tally mark. The fi rst person to reach 25 tally marks wins. **This can also be an independent practice and you can record the number sentence for each roll.
Race to 0
You can start this game from 50 or from 100. Each player writes the starting number (50 or 100) on a piece of notebook paper. Each play-er takes turns rolling a die and taking that number away from their start-ing number. Continue taking turns rolling and subtracting the number rolled from the previous difference until one player gets to 0.

Former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller hated to read. He called it a “slow and tortuous process.” It all started with his early education. Unfortunately for young Nelson, he was denied the opportunity that all students should be able to take for granted—that of learning to read. His father had sent him to one of the most prestigious schools of his time, but it was one of the fi rst to adopt a new reading instruction methodology from Europe that was doomed to failure from the very start. The new method tried unsuccessfully to teach reading to the wrong part of the brain.
The schools abandoned a method that had been successful for thousands of years, In this method, phonics, each letter represented a sound. As the sounds in a word were spoken, the word was automatically pronounced. It was a simple, natural way to read.
Today more and more schools are trying to go back to the ancient Phoenician method, but many of them are struggling because their phonics programs merely cover the most basic sounds and leave out large blocks of essential skills. A comprehensive, step-by-step phonics program includes all the sounds and all the rules. Students taught by that method soon master the necessary skills of reading, and, unlike our unfortunate Vice President, they usually develop a genuine love of reading.
