NEW DELHI, Jan 11: In the biggest hike in nearly three decades, Saudi Arabia today increased India's annual Haj quota by 34,500, a move wel- comed by the NDA Government as a "matter of pleasure". Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Saudi Arabia's Haj and Umrah Minister Dr Mohammad Saleh bin Taher Benten inked an agreement in this regard in Jeddah today, increasing the size of India's Haj quota from 1,36,020 to 1,70,520. According to a statement issued by Minister of State for Minority Affairs (Independent Charge) Naqvi, it is the "biggest increase" in quota for Haj pil- grims after 1988. The latest increase in quota will be effective from the current year. The Saudi authorities had five years ago slashed quotas for for- eign pilgrims coming from each country by 20 per cent in view of safety of the devotees as they undertook expansion of Grand Mosque there. Accordingly, India's quota was brought down to 1,36,020 from 1,70,000 in 2012. Last year, a total of 1,35,903 devotees from India performed Haj. Of these, 99,903 devotees went to Jeddah through Haj Committee of India. The remaining 36,000 pilgrims had proceeded through private operators. Expressing pleasure at sign- ing of the agreement, Naqvi tweeted, "Its a matter of pleasure that Saudi Arabia has increased India's Haj quota by about 34,000." Naqvi said his meeting with Benten was "very fruitful" as "constructive" discussion was held on whole gamut of issues related to the pilgrimage, trans- port and accommodation facili- ties for devotees and their safety. "On behalf of the people and Government of India, we also extend gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, His Excellency Saudi Arabia King Salman bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, for his keen personal interest and initiative in organising a success- ful Haj 2016," Naqvi said in the statement. The Minister exuded confi- dence that under the visionary leadership of Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, the "excellent" relationship between the two countries will be further strengthened. Stating India and Saudi Arabia share ideals of global peace, progress and prosperity, Naqvi said the two countries are tied together with strong civilisa- tional, cultural, economic and political links. "The regular visits by the leaders and senior-level officials of the two nations have further strengthened the relationship between the two nations. The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Saudi Arabia during April last year added new dimen- sions to our vibrant relationship," he said. The Minister also expressed satisfaction over the improve- ments in services offered to pil- grims which indicates Saudi Arabia's firm commitment towards welfare and betterment of pilgrims. The NDA Government has started issuing Haj applications from January 2. The last date for submission of applications is January 24. As part of its efforts to streamline the process, the Government has urged pilgrims to submit their applications online. In December last year, a new Haj website was launched which provides all necessary information to Haj pilgrims, the statement said. On January 2, the Minister had launched the Haj Committee of India mobile application to help pilgrims apply online. (PTI) GANDHINAGAR, Jan 11: With states and the Centre still locked in stalemate over control of tax payers, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the issue will be resolved in next few weeks for rollout of the GST regime from April 1. The all-powerful GST Council, which has been dead- locked in the past few meetings, will meet on January 16 to dis- cuss the issue of jurisdiction over assessees as well as taxa- tion of trade in territorial waters. “Most of the issues have been sorted out, some critical issues remain and these critical issues over the next few weeks we will try and solve out,” he said addressing the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit here. Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is to subsume most of the central and state taxes like excise, service tax and VAT, needs to be rolled out lat- est by September 16, 2017, he said. Under the Constitutional Amendment passed by Parliament for the GST imple- mentation, some of the existing levies would expire after September 16. Jaitley said the government was aiming to implement the new sales tax from April this year. “We would want it to be implemented from April if all issues are resolved.” Once implemented, he said, GST combined with more digi- tised economy resulting from currency demonetisation and a more efficient tax system will “make India look much better, make our economy look much cleaner, much bigger”. He hoped that the industry, assessee and states will eventu- ally cooperate and make GST as well as the two moves success- ful. GST and demonetisation together will lead to “higher revenues in future, greater com- pliance and give us a cleaner and better economy,” Jaitley said. “There is a provision for GST implementation because Constitutional Amendment has been passed. So it’s Constitutional necessity that before September 16 it should be rolled out,” he added. GST, or a national sales tax, will replace a jumble of levies to create one of the world’s biggest single market. A single tax will make it easier to do business in the world’s seventh-largest economy as also help combat evasion, boost revenue for the government. But the roll out is struck because of differences between the Centre and states over con- trol and administration of the tax as also on how the states that face revenue shortfall because of the GST roll out would need to be compensated. (PTI) Sidhu would soon join Congress unconditionally: Amarinder NEW DELHI, Jan 11: Putting at rest talks of Navjot Singh Sidhu being offered the post of deputy chief minister if Congress party comes to power in Punjab, the state Congress chief Amarinder Singh today said the cricketer- turned- politician would soon join the party “unconditionally”. The decision on deputy chief minister would be taken by the party National president and vice president at an “appropriate time”, he said. “Sidhu’s decision to join the Congress was unconditional. No strings attached,” the former Punjab chief minister said. He said Sidhu would be the party’s candidate from Amritsar East, as announced by his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu. “The delay in his joining was due to his professional commitments, which he wanted to conclude before getting into the election gear,” Amarinder said in a statement here. On the delay in the announcing remaining candi- dates for the Punjab polls, he said it would be announced today. Further explaining the delay, he said the party’s central lead- ership has five states to look after “which naturally leads to some delays in the decision- making process”.
