technique.

Video clip about various types of cells used in daily life.

1. Teacher shows a video clip on alarm clock animation.

2. Students are asked the following questions:(i) Can you name the three appliances that can woke up the actor in the video clip?

Ans: Radio, alarm clock and handphone (ii)Do you know what makes the radio, alarm clock and handphone work? Ans: Battery (iii)Are the batteries used in the alarm clock, hand phone and radio the same? Ans: Yes

3. Teacher introduces the topic.‘Daniell Cell’

Elicitation of ideas(10 minutes)

Strategy

Questioning technique on how energy changes in various types of cells / batteries.

1. Teacher asks students the following questions :

- Do you know the energy changes that occur in battery / voltaic cell used in the video clip?- Do you know the actual process which takes place in the battery / voltaic cell that generates electricity

SPS Predicting Communicating

TS Relating. Generating ideas.

SANV : Having critical and

analytical thinking Being confident

and independent.

Restructuring of ideas (40 minutes)

Strategies Power point

presentation- How to construct a simple voltaic cell.- Daniell Cell

Hands-on activity to study the generation of electricity from chemical reactions in a simple voltaic cell.

Discussion: Half equations and overall ionic equation.

1) Teacher explains the way to construct a simple voltaic cell.

2) Students are asked to be in three groups and teacher distributes Appendix 1 to every group.

3) Teacher reads out safety precautions (Appendix 1) and gives instructions on how carry out the activity.

4) Students carry out the activity to find out how electricity can be produced by the chemical reaction in a simple voltaic cell.

5) Students record their observations and readings

in the worksheet given.6) A representative from each

group is asked to write down the result and observation on the table that is drawn on the whiteboard.

7) Teacher discusses the results with students and explains the reactions that occur inside a cell.

8) Teacher explains the half equations, overall ionic equations involved in the reactions and other example of voltaic cell. (Daniell cell)

9) Students are asked to submit their experiment report.
