New German air tax GERMANY is looking to impose anew environmental air tax on paxflying out of any of the country’sairports, in a bid to raise around$1 billion Euro each year. The levy will vary according tothe flight’s noise level and fuelconsumption. The Netherlands attempted tointroduce a similar tax a fewyears ago, but it was blamed on asevere drop in passenger numbersat Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, and was later ditched. CEO of the International AirTransport Association, GiovanniBisignani slammed the tax, sayingthe proposal should be axed. “This is the worst kind of short-sighted policy irresponsibility. “It’s a cash grab by a cash-strapped Government. Painting itgreen adds insult to injury,”Bisignai said in Berlin. Bisignani said any environmentaltax requires a “global approach”and comes at a time when airlinesare struggling to recover from theglobal recession. “This tax is a body blow to theweak economy and a fragileindustry. And it is a kick in theteeth to travellers at a time whenthey can least afford it,” he said.
