Tableau is a form of data visualisation software

It is user friendly and largely relies on “drag and drop” methods for building infographics

It is easy to learn and use, and can create fantastic graphs in a short period of time

But it has its limitations, in particular for dynamic infographics with a lot of user interaction features

What is D3?

D3 is short for Data-Driven Documents

D3.js is a JavaScript

library used to produce

visualisations that are dynamic and interactive

D3 is easily compatible with

HTML, so is perfect for

sharing visualisations on

the web

D3 allows the user huge

control over what the final visualisation

looks like

However, it can take a lot of time to build relatively

simple graphs and refreshing the underlying data can be difficult also

Integration with Tableau

Two methods:

Use Tableau’s API and host a Tableau dashboard on a

webpage that uses D3 for interactivity

Insert a D3 URL link to be displayed on a tableau

dashboard
