    What is urban design?

    - The process of shaping thephysical setting for life in cities,towns and villages.

    - It is the art of making places.- It involves the design of

    buildings, groups of buildings,

    spaces and landscapes, andestablishing the processes thatmake successful developmentpossible.

    Why so many places badly designed?

    - Many planning applications are drawnup by someone with no design training;no sense of what makes a successful

    place.- But being trained in design does not

    necessarily mean that the personresponsible for the development will

    designing something that might make asuccessful place.

    - Urban design appeals to people who areinterested in more than just the design

    of a single building or the interests of asingle user.

    - Urban designers create a place that willbe used and enjoyed by a wide range of

    different people for different purposes,not only now but in years to come.

    Why is urban design important?

    - Urban design is a key to making placesthat are successful both socially and

    economically, good to live in, andattractive to visit.

    - Careful urban design may contribute toa reduction in crime and anti-social

    behavior.

    - Urban design is essential in creatingcommunity identity. Its effectiveplanning in the widest sense, and it canhelp to deliver better public services. Italso helps to achieve value for money innew developments, and to make good

    use of scarce resources.

    What do urban designers do?

    - Developing visions for places usingcreativity and imagination to invent orre-invent the environments we live and

    work in.- Designing built spaces from whole

    towns and neighborhoods to individualstreets or squares. Advising on the

    design of developments and regenerationprojects.

    - Researching and analyzing places andpeople understanding the physical,political, economic, spatial and

    psychological context of the places youwork with and the people who use them.

    - Influencing people by using your skillsand knowledge to help others make

    better decisions and teach them how tomake successful places.

    Designing for an unpredictable future

    - Towns and cities are constantly changing,and in ways that are unpredictable. Howwill we be living, working, shopping or

    enjoying ourselves in 10, 20 or 30 yearstime? We dont know.

    - That does not mean that we can not

    plan and design.- What it does mean is that we need toplan and design flexible frameworksthat can accommodate change.

    Designing for an unpredictable future

    We need to know:

    - In thinking about the future, we need tounderstand the past and the present.

    - The physical characteristics of theplaces we are planning, including theirlandscape, waterways and ecologies.

    - To understand local economic and

    market conditions.- The people who live there how theylive, how they work, how they moveabout the area and what they hope forthe places future.

    Why is this job for me?

    - Your work is will leave a legacy forthe future.

    - You are a part of the process thatshapes the world around us.
