INTRODUCTION

Dear friends,It’s a special pleasure to introduce to you our new catalogue this year, as 2015 was a very rewarding year for Czech cinema.Czech films were invited and awarded at numerous film festivals all over the world, Karlovy Vary Film Festival celebrated its50th birthday, new talented filmmakers and actors emerged on the Czech film scene. The State Cinematography Fund, which isthe main tool for public support of cinematography in the Czech Republic, stabilized its position within the industry andsupported Czech films of all genres and in various stages of development and production.

“Debut” and “co-production” seem to be the key words for the last year’s production. From 35 feature films produced in 2015,fourteen were made in co-production. Slovakia, the traditional Czech co-production partner, has been joined by Poland,Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, France and for the first time also Iran. Many co-production films have been celebratinginternational success: Aferim! by Radu Jude became the winner of 2015 Silver Bear for directing, Family Film by Olmo Omerzuwas awarded for the best artistic contribution at Tokyo IFF, Koza by Ivan Ostrochovský received awards at 11 internationalfestivals and Marguerite by Xavier Giannoli, another Czech minority co-production, was premiered at Venice Film Festival andbecame a distribution blockbuster not only in France.

Among the high profile Czech films produced in 2015 were Lost in Munich by Petr Zelenka, produced by Lucky Man Films,Family Film, a co-production of Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia, France, and Slovakia by Olmo Omerzu produced byendorfilm or The Snake Brothers by Jan Prušinovský produced by Offside Men. Nine debuts from the last year’s productioninclude exceptional Home Care by Slávek Horák, selected as the Czech submission for the Academy Award for Best ForeignLanguage Film, Journey to Rome by Tomasz Mielnik, Dust of the Ground by Vít Zapletal and Road-Movie by Martin Jelínekwhich was among 14 debuts competing at Tallinn Black Nights FF.

16 feature length documentaries were released in Czech cinemas last year, including Mallory, a new documentary by HelenaTřeštíková, which was invited to several important documentary film festivals, including CPH:DOX in Denmark or ClimbingHigher by David Čálek. Many last year’s documentaries were made in international co-production: Koudelka Shooting HollyLand by Gilad Baram or Cinema, mon amour by Alexandru Belc. Film Adventurer Karel Zeman by Tomáš Hodan was presentedat Montreal WFF, Tallinn Black Nights FF or Monstra – Lisboa.

Two Czech feature length animated films were successfully released in Czech cinema distribution last year: Little from the FishShop by Jan Balej and The Little Man by Radek Beran.

Czech films are still well visited in domestic cinemas. Among most successful last year were comedies, Life is Life by MilanCieslar, Dodgeball by Petr Nikolaev, Photographer by Irena Pavlásková or Chasing 50, a debut by Vojtěch Kotek.

So you would agree this looks like a very hopeful development and I believe it’s a beginning of a new era for Czech film. Let’skeep our fingers crossed for it!

AFERIM!

In 19th century Romania, Costandin (50), a policeman of the time, and his son Ionita (15)travel through the south of the country in search of a fugitive Gypsy slave. Costandin isa charismatic mixture between a funny Stalin and a somewhat more pragmatic DonQuixote. While Ionita seems to be quite the opposite: more like Dostoyevsky’s Idiot, findinghimself in the unfortunate situation of having to settle his inner turmoil while riding, holdinga sword or a gun. Their road speedily winds through exotic landscapes and meetinghundreds of secondary characters renders a surprise in every scene. All of this is picturedwith infectious humor and stirring cynicism, while keeping the authenticity of the age, in aningenious Western in a wild-wild East never yet captured on film.

VICTORIAANGEL

The main character of the film is 15 year old Victoria. A typical teenager influenced by masspop culture. Her way of thinking and acting are mainly determined by mimicking models fromthe adult world inhabited by celebrities. Victoria is brought up in such an environment by hersingle mother. Not surprisingly, she finds substitutes of real life and real relationships in thevirtual reality of social networks. A turn in her life happens after the death of her mother,a successful businesswoman. Vicky involuntarily moves to her biological father, away froma big city that offered her practically everything that came across her mind. Her adaptationto a new surroundings and a “new” father brings comical situations that arise from a collisionof worlds that seem too far apart to merge.

BABOVŘESKY 3

Zdeněk Troška’s summer comedy is a humorous look at life in a contemporary village. Herewe follow, with detachment and comedic hyperbole, the snowballing misunderstandingsand coincidences that really get the village inhabitants in a whirl. The story is not lackinglove, jealousy, envy, intrigue and, above all, humorous moments where many will recognizea bit of themselves. The story begins where the second part left off: the mayor wants toexact his revenge on the local gossipers and sends them to the seaside for a vacation.

PHOTOGRAPHER

The story is freely inspired by the life and work of Jan Saudek, internationally known Czechphotographer, who has exhibited and sold his work in the largest galleries and art houses, earned international recognition and awards but always remained himself. In flashbacks,we briefly dive into some of the basic stages of his turbulent life: memories of the warand the trauma from the Nazi refugee camps, bans on his work and persecution by thecommunist secret police, the failures of his marriages, etc. The entire story is framedby his meeting a young woman who would become his femme fatale, though not in thegood sense of the word.

PRACH

DUST OF THEGROUND

Father’s stroke sets off a tale of three days and two nights in life of one family. Both sonsand their partners turn up at the parents’ house, located in a secluded area in thecountryside. After a long time they are all together again. Time almost comes to a standstill;the reverential mood invites meditations about the fundamental questions of life.Inconspicuous, strange coincidences point their paths in unpredictable directions. Thisrestrained film which relies on the audience’s active participation, brings spiritual dimensionback to Czech cinema, which has nothing in common with tacky pseudo-mysticism.

CLIMBINGHIGHER

Radek Jaroš, the first Czech who competed the Crown of the Himalayas, decided to climbhis final 8000er with a camera in tow, giving viewers of this film a rare opportunityto experience his K2 expedition firsthand. The most majestic mountains are suddenlywithin reach of all who admire their grandeur but would never attempt to conquer them.Audiences live through the climbers’ fears and triumphs as they happen, and feel theburden – at such incredible elevations – of every arduous step and every labored breath. But there is more: the awesome beauty everywhere to behold, for which many have paidthe highest price. Climbing Higher is more than a record of a historic moment in Czechmountaineering, it also explores a person’s ability to overcome extreme obstacles, bothphysical and personal.

ČESKÁCESTA

THE CZECHWAY

Czechoslovak economic transformation of the 1990s, presented as the key to thetransformation of totalitarian society into a democracy, was at the same time publiclyunderstood as the process of wealth redistribution – from the state to the people. Thisprocess formed a new, up to the present day lasting structures of political and economicelite. The ten richest contemporary Czechs came to their wealth in this process of propertyredistribution. Despite its enormous influence on the character of our contemporary society, the transformation process is still veiled in mystery. However, while the issue has not lost itsimportance, after almost two decades a number of that day politicians and other involvedpeople are finally willing to speak openly even about their own failures.

ABANDONEDUNIVERSE

This is a documentary about death, dying and the possibility/impossibility of posthumousexistence. In the first part, we look at the current knowledge of science which hasn't ruledout the “so far” undefined form of continuation of the human “nature” after the physicaldeath. In the second one, we focus on the personal experiences of well-known personalitiesfrom the art world – how do they cope with death, the end of life and the not knowing ofwhat will or will not happen? Part of the film would comprise personal testimonies of thosewho “survived their death” like writer Michael Viewegh or the actor and director Jan Kačerand other respected and trustworthy personalities. However, at the end the movie isa personal search of the director – seeking answers to posed questions while the death isreally close and while he’s trying to cope with his sister's death.

BUTTONS OFCONSCIOUSNESS

This creative experimental documentary about frontiers of Eastern meditation and Westernscience, tries to embody what it deals with – meditation itself. The film portrays two Czechscientists, who accepted the tool of meditation in addition to scientific exploration of theworld: poet and plasma physicist Pavel Ctibor and cognitive scientist and Buddhist JanBurian, both scientists and personalities rooted in the Eastern teachings of Buddhismand Shaivism. The film attempts to describe meditation and also to evoke it or inducein the audience through the experimentation with film medium. It examines boundariesof exploration of the world using objectivism of science and subjectivism of meditation.

The film follows a family in Pyongyang during one yearthrough the eyes of 8-year-old Zin Mi, the only daughter of an obedient couple. Zin Miparticipates in the giant patriotic shows with huge living tableaus of the country’s leadersand achievements. Our contributors proudly become a part of those surreal shows. VŠICHNI MAJÍPRAVDU? KARELFLOSS A TI DRUZÍ

IS EVERYONE RIGHT?KAREL FLOSSAND THE OTHERS

A multi-portrait of the history of post-1989 Czech ideas and sensibilities, centered aroundleft-wing Christian philosopher Karel Floss. Circling his ideas on God, truth, and politics likesatellites are statements by strongly antithetical individuals including Milan Knížák, OndřejSlačálek, Noam Chomsky and Czech nationalist thinkers. Working with a subtle sense ofirony, the film is openly inspired by the style of Karel Vachek as it makes use of semanticcounterpoints, situational humour and aloof formal elements. The result is a kind ofaudiovisual riverbed for channelling the fury of a nation that recalls a child that is justlearning to think and does not know what to relate to first, because in a certain sense, basically “everyone is right”.
