Description
•Occurs when the wall between the wall between a women’s bladder and vagina weakens and the bladder falls into the vagina
Grade 1
•When the bladder drops a short way into the vagina
Grade 2
•The bladder sinks low enough to reach the opening of the vagina
Grade 3
•When the bladder bulges out through the opening of the vagina
Causes•Muscle straining from birth
•Heavy lifting
•During bowel movements
•Estrogen is a hormone that keeps the muscles around the vagina strong, and during menopause the body stops forming estrogen causing the vagina to weaken
Diagnose•Grade 2 and 3 cystocele can be
seen by the doctor
•Grade 1 may require an xray called a cystourethrogram
•A cystourethrogram views the bladder while urination occurs allowing the doctor to observe any blockages
Treatment-Grade 1
•No treatment is needed
•Unless it becomes bothersome the doctor might suggest to just avoid strenuous activities that could worsen the condition of the cystocele
Treatment-Grade 2
•Doctor may use a pessary device to hold the bladder in place
•Pessary devices must be removed regularly to avoid infection and ulcers
Treatment-Grade 3
•Large cystoceles may need surgery to move the bladder into a more normal position
•This may be preformed by a urologist, a gynecologist or a urogynecologist
