IntroductionThe Arrival by Shaun Tan

You are about to embark on a journey. You will be leaving your home and all that is

familiar to you. You will learn what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land. Be

prepared to feel many emotions as you explore the sometimes confusing, scary

and delightful landscapes.

Materials & Supplies

• Copy of The Arrival• Laptop computer for each student• Headphones for each student• Elmo projector• Computer printer• Supply of books on Ellis Island and U.S.

immigration• Film clip on Ellis Island (downloaded

onto laptops)

Group RolesStudents within groups will assign each other roles. Students

will take turns with each role, rotating roles daily. The roles aredescribed below:

o Page ProjectorYou will turn the pages of the book to display using Elmo.

o Discussion LeaderYou will lead the discussion by initiating the conversation with your ideas, inviting everyone to participate in the conversation.

o Image DirectorYou will stand at the screen and invite volunteers to approach and discuss the projected image.

o ConversationalistsYou will be an active participant in the discussion, helping others construct meaning of the text through predictions, connections, questions and inferences.

Before ReadingThe main character in this story has immigrated from

his homeland to make a new life in a new land. With the exception of Native Americans, all of our families have immigrated to the United States at some point and many who landed in New York saw the Statue of

Liberty and were required to stop at Ellis Island. These places are pictured in The Arrival. Visit the

Ellis Island Site* to learn more about this experience.

During Reading

I is for immigrants

A person who comes from anther country and

travels to live in a foreign country

In The Arrival, many immigrants leave their homeland to settle in the new and

strange land.

J is for journey

A traveling from one place to another, usually taking a long time

In The Arrival, the man and many others took a long journey to reach the new land.

K is for Kindred

A group of related individuals

In the story, the man left his real family but found people in his new country that became KINDRED to him.

M is for multicultural

Many different cultures

The country in The arrival has a lot of different people from different cultures, making it a multicultural country.

P is for perplexing

Confusing and full of difficulty

The man thought that the little, strange creatures were very perplexing.

U is for Universal

Present or occurring everywhere

In The Arrival, the man needed many things that are universal, like shelter,

food and friends.

W is for whimsical

Imaginative, unreal

The father in The Arrival landed in the new country and discovered that everything seemed whimsical: the pets, the flying sale boats, all the mail boxes, the buildings and more.

xA person fearful of

a foreign place,

especially of strangers

is for Xenophobia

It seemed like there was no xenophobia in the new land,

because a lot of people tried to be the man’s

friend.
