You are about to embark on a journey. You will be leaving your home and all that is

familiar to you. You will learn what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land. Be

prepared to feel many emotions as you explore the sometimes confusing, scary

and delightful landscapes.

Group RolesStudents within groups will assign each other roles. Students

will take turns with each role, rotating roles daily. The roles aredescribed below:

Before ReadingThe main character in this story has immigrated from

his homeland to make a new life in a new land. With the exception of Native Americans, all of our families have immigrated to the United States at some point and many who landed in New York saw the Statue of

Liberty and were required to stop at Ellis Island. These places are pictured in The Arrival. Visit the

Ellis Island Site* to learn more about this experience.

In The Arrival, many immigrants leave their homeland to settle in the new and
