Avista Utilitiesrsquo (Avista) Spokane Smart Circuit project aims
bull to reduce energy losses and improve reliability and efficiency in the electricity
distribution system while reducing the need for new generation facilities
bullThe project includes upgrading the distribution system by automating the
management of the distribution grid and installing a rapid communications and
monitoring infrastructure
bullNew switches capacitors and sensors are being installed in substations and
distribution circuits across the project area
bullThis equipment provides automated regulation of power quality rapid
response to grid disturbances and improvements to distribution reliability
bullA radio and fiber optic communications system integrates real-time data from
grid sensors with the grid operatorrsquos distribution management software

Project Summary
bullISO New England Inc located in Holyoke Massachusetts has been
rewarded $37 million in federal funding to develop a smarter more efficient
energy grid
bullThe US Department of Energy chose ISO New England as one of 100
companies nationwide to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
bullThe project started in 2010 and its focus is to install 30 synchrophasors and
connect the independent systems operators in New England to increase
response time to real time system events and reduce congestion by being able
to collect and share synchrophasor and disturbance data with other regions for
wide area monitoring
