Becoming Mature in Christ

“My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” Galatians 4:19

A maturing disciple is one who is…

Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10).

As we grow in knowing Jesus we have access to Christ’s thoughts by the Holy Spirit. As we participate in greater communion with Jesus this leads to increased wisdom, a Godly perspective and a deeper understanding of all that Jesus taught.

Heart – Committed to becoming like Jesus “becoming Like Him” (Phil 3:10)

As we mature what we know causes change in our character. Our attitudes and priorities change. Christ’s foundational attitude is humility. Out of humility flows the Holy Spirit. An attitude of humility greatly impacts our relationships with others. We grow in love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness, kindness and self-control.

Hands – Committed to making disciples with Jesus “to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of me” (Phil 3:12)

Page 3: cwwos.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA maturing disciple is one who is… Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10). As we

As our minds and attitudes become conformed to Christ, so do our actions. The mature offer their bodies as living sacrifices. They offer their abilities, time and gifts to serve in Jesus’ mission of making disciples. Maturing disciples are empowered by the Spirit to reproduce new disciples.

Persecuted Doing with Jesus

June Last Meeting – A Discipler’s Prayer (John 17)

Our StoryIn the winter of 2016 Jesus was active in preparing GDAC for a new vision. A survey had been completed by GDAC which indicated a heart desire to see a renewed passion for discipleship. At the same time Jesus was at work in calling Pastor Brent and Pastor Greg to come alongside Pastor Tracy and Pastor Tyler to equip and build up GDAC in the new forming vision. Over the past 6 months Jesus has led our Elder and Staff team to clarity in Jesus’ invitational vision.

Vision Statement: Jesus is inviting us to be a family of maturing disciples, multiplying maturing disciples in the power of the Holy Spirit

Vision Motto: Be One. Make One. Matthew 28:18-20

Values: Christ Centered, Spirit Empowered, Mission Focused

Strategy: Creating disciple making relational environments in Jesus’ disciple making way (Go Pairs, Grow Groups, Gather Sunday’s).

Gather Sundays (Acts 1 & 2) Following Jesus’ accession a new larger disciple making environment was formed.  A group of about 120 gathered “continually for prayer” awaiting the arrival of the Holy Spirit to empower them to accomplish Jesus’ invitation to make disciples with Him and

Page 5: cwwos.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA maturing disciple is one who is… Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10). As we

for Him.  Eventually this group became thousands, as disciples made disciples and even saw the formation of new gatherings outside of Jerusalem. This new bulging family met as a large gathering daily in the Temple courts.  This disciple making environment is what we envision and are intentional at equipping in what we call our Gather Sundays - A weekly gathering as one large family to center ourselves on Christ, be empowered by the Spirit and be reminded of our mission. Practically this is accomplished through corporate prayer, fellowship, teaching, worship, care and celebration.

Grow Groups (Mark 3:13-19) – After a night of prayer in Mark 3:13-19 Jesus was led to form a disciple making environment with a small group of 12. Jesus shared His daily life with them, inviting them into genuine relationship with Him. To this group Jesus was vulnerable, He taught them the deep truths of His Father’s kingdom, He cared for their needs, encouraged and rebuked them, equipped them in His ministry, creating a culture for growth. (Matthew 14:36-43, 16:17-30, Luke 8:1-3) Eventually these were the few Jesus empowered through the Holy Spirit and released to partner with Him in multiplying maturing disciples.  This is what we envision for our Grow Groups. Small groups that function as spiritual families led by maturing disciples.  Groups that do life together and spur each other on towards maturity in Christ, leading to the multiplication of maturing disciples and the birth of new groups.

Go Pairs (John 21). Jesus in obedience to Father and by the filling of the Spirit drew three disciples closest to Himself (Peter, James, and John).  This disciple making environment was the most intimate and yielded the greatest growth.

Page 6: cwwos.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA maturing disciple is one who is… Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10). As we

Much is written of Jesus’ unique investment in these men and their growth in knowing, becoming like and making Christ known over the three years with Him and in the years following. (Matthew 17:1-3, Mark 5:37-43, 14:33-34, John 21).  This is what we envision for Go Pairs.  Maturing disciples responding to Jesus’ lead and in the power of the Spirit inviting others to “follow me as I follow Christ”.  Discipler’s leading and equipping other disciples in the 3 Season discipleship pattern of Jesus.

Overview GO PAIRS Season 2 seeks to replicate the second season of Jesus’ discipleship pattern through the application and expected responses of Team/Family, Teaching/Obedience and Responsibility/Experimentation. It is designed for those disciples who desire to continue their intentional discipleship journey in becoming more like Jesus inwardly and outwardly. In addition to being paired with a discipler, the disciple joins a ministry team, engages in deeper teaching and is given authority in a chosen ministry role with opportunity to explore and experiment with the gifts God has given them to be His Church.

Team/Family – Jesus formalized a team of disciples around him after a night of prayer (Mark 3:13-19). Throughout the gospels it is evident that the disciples built strong friendships with each other. Together they processed their experience, supported and challenged each other’s faith.

Teaching/Obedience– Jesus took time to get alone with His disciples in order to teach and explain the truths of His kingdom (Mark 4:33-34). The largest portion of Jesus’

teaching recorded, known as the “sermon on the mount” was directed specifically to his disciples (Matthew 5:1-2).

Responsibility/Experimentation – Jesus sent His disciples out in two’s and gave them authority, leadership and responsibility to use and experiment with (Mark 6:7-12, 30-44). Through experimentation disciples began to identify their unique spiritual giftedness and passion to be his Church. Jesus involved the disciples in His miracles. (Mark 6:30-44). In Mark 9:14-28 the disciples were unable to heal a sick boy, Jesus explained to the disciples why they had failed.

How to Use GuideHow to Use: The guide is designed to assist the disciple in further knowing Christ and becoming like Him. Each discipleship pairing will be different and how you end up using the guide will vary. Each month can be divided into 1-3 sessions as desired. Take it meeting by meeting. Don’t feel accomplishing the guide is of most importance, you may find other resources more helpful to use along the way and that’s ok! What’s important is developing a learning relationship in partnership with the Holy Spirit.

Key Verse – The key verses summarize key ideas. Try to commit them to memory.

Study – For each topic there are scriptures and questions that will help you gain wisdom on that month’s discussion topics. Do the study prior to your discipleship meeting. Use the lines below to reflect on what you are learning. This is a helpful way to record things God is saying to you and

Page 8: cwwos.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA maturing disciple is one who is… Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10). As we

questions you may have. You may want to use your own journal for additional space.

Experience – These are practical ideas on how to put what you are learning into action. Christ did everyday life together with His disciples, they learned mostly by doing. Feel free to get creative with your own ideas.

Evaluate – Use this to set goals, reflect on topics learned, experienced and assess your own growth. (1 low – 10 high)

Discuss – Use this section as a guide for creating intentional conversation to grow your relationship between disciple and discipler, to see Christ formed in the disciple.

Last Meeting JuneKey Verse: John 17:6-9 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.”

Study: John 17:6-19. Why is this prayer different than other prayers Jesus had prayed for His disciples? What does Jesus affirm/thank the Father for accomplishing in the disciples? What protection for the disciples does Jesus pray for? What does Jesus pray will happen in their lives moving forward? What aspects of this prayer do you see applying to you now as your discipleship relationship in its current form concludes? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Mission Focused – Do you have an individual in mind to disciple? Join us as a Season 3 disciple maker this coming Fall.

Discipleship Pattern of JesusSeason 1 (Mark 1:16 – 3:12, Matthew 4:18-25, Luke 5)

Invitation/Submission – In the gospel of John Jesus said “I have revealed you to those you have given me out of the world” (John 17:6). Jesus was given by the Father individuals to call as His disciples. The gospels show us that Jesus sought out these individuals and actively invited them to follow Him (Mark 1:16-20, 2:13-14)

Demonstration/Observation – After Jesus called His first disciples there is a period where they simply observe Jesus doing life and ministry (Mark 1:21-45, 2:23—25, 3:7-12). Jesus modelled for His disciples how to experience life as the Father intended by doing all aspects of life with them.

Season 2 (Mark 3:13-19, 4:10-34, 6:7-13, 30-42, 9:14-28, Matthew 5, 6, 10, 14:13-21, 17:14-22, Luke 6:12-49, 9:1-1)

Team/Family – Jesus formalized a team of disciples around him after a night of prayer (Mark 3:13-19). Throughout the gospels it is evident that the disciples built strong friendships with each other. Together they processed their experience, supported and challenged each other’s faith.

Page 35: cwwos.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewA maturing disciple is one who is… Head – Committed to knowing and following Jesus. “I want to know Christ” (Phil 3:8-10). As we

Teaching/Obedience – Jesus took time to get alone with His disciples in order to teach and explain the truths of His kingdom (Mark 4:33-34). The largest portion of Jesus’ teaching recorded, known as the “sermon on the mount” was directed specifically to his disciples (Matthew 5:1-2).

Season 3 (Mark 16:14-18, Matthew 28:16-20, Luke 24:44-49, John 17:1-19, 20:19-23, Acts 1:8, 2:33)

Anointed/Empowerment – Near the end of Jesus’ ministry, He empowers the disciples to accomplish His calling on their life. In John 17 Jesus empowers the disciples through a prayer of affirmation, protection and sanctification. In John 21 Jesus empowers Peter affirming his specific call to “feed my sheep”. Jesus does this for all the disciples in Matthew 28:16-20, calling them to “go and make disciples of all nations”. In John 20:22, Acts 1:8 and 2:33 Jesus gives the source of His own empowerment, the Holy Spirit to enable them to fulfill their calling.

Release/Reproduction – In Matthew 28:20 Jesus tells the disciples that He would be with them always, but from this

point on He would be with them in a different way. There came a time when the disciples would be more productive in accomplishing Jesus’ calling for their life and for the Kingdom without Jesus physically by their side, but in them through the Holy Spirit. Jesus releases his disciples to “go make disciples of all nations”.

Go Pairs What Tools

Season 1

Knowing Jesus

Phil 3:10

Season 1 seeks to replicate the 1st season of Jesus’ discipleship pattern with the application and

expected responses of Invitation/Submission and Demonstration/Observation. Pairs are formed

(Parent to Child gr. 7+, Adult to Youth gr. 9+, Adult to Adult) between a maturing discipler and a young or not yet follow of Jesus. The discipler reveals Jesus and models how to follow Him. A disciple submits to

a season under their discipler. An individual’s experience in a discipleship pairing can look

different, but typically pairs follow their Season 1 Guide and meet 2-3 times monthly to discuss and

experience life together.

Season 2

Becoming Like JesusPhil 3:11

Season 2 seeks to replicate the 2nd season of Jesus’ discipleship pattern through the application and

expected responses of Teaching/Obedience, Team/Family and Responsibility/Experimentation.

It is for disciples who desire to continue their intentional discipleship journey in becoming more

like Jesus. In addition to being paired with a discipler, the disciple joins a ministry team, works through Jesus’ sermon on the mount and is given

authority in a chosen ministry role with opportunity to explore and experiment with the gifts God has

given them to be His Church.

Making Jesus Known

Phil 3:12

Season 3 seeks to replicate the 3rd season of Jesus’ discipleship pattern by applying and expecting

Anoint/Empower and Release/Reproduce. It is to equip disciples to disciple others in discipleship

pattern of Jesus and empower maturing disciples in the Holy Spirit as they follow Jesus' call to "make

disciples". At this stage the disciple invites another disciple into a pairing. At the end of Season 3 the

disciple is affirmed in their role of the church, empowered by the laying on of hands and released to continue to reproduce disciple makers in Christ.
