January 197kDear Friends,As we begin the New Year, we want you to know how thankful theCuyler family is for your unceasing prayers and financial help. The devil is at work everywhere and rising prices here in the U.S.affect our missionaries a l l over the world. Prices in Pfexico arerising just as they are in other parts of the world. Usuallysupport stays the same so your stedfastness, in times like these,is vital if we are to spread the Word of God in these latter days Praise the Lord for such as you i

will continue to pray for the health of the Cuyler family.^Garn^ is getting stronger all the time. She had surgery 2 times inless th^ 10 days in December. The last one was for removal of brokenspine. She suffered a great deal ofpain and again had drug reactions in the^;^pital.

While she was in the hospital the girls bedroom caught 5^(firethanks be to God no one was at home. Sebastian was conduc^n^ servicesin town and Larry had taken the children to visit Garnet at San LuisPotosi. All the girls clothing, some books and a crib were lost.Smoke dam^e to the rest of the house was extensive. Sebastian came inwhile i t was ablaze and they were able to put i t out. Garnet was ableto return home a few days after this. All but the bedroom has been repainted in time for Christmas services). They are so thankful thatno one was asleep at the time I God certainly watches over themILarry and Garnet and the children have had many trials in a countrywhere misery and suffering abound i It seems Satan and his army workover-time there. This Christian family has suffered so many things, yetwe OW that their overcoming these hardships has enabled them a closerelationship and good communication with the Mexican people, wh o havesuffered so much themselves. Above all, they know that the strength to-overcome them has come from God. His blessings have been far greaterthan any suffering. _The_.Toaar J.S7.3-. saw 1 ^ new Christians added to theKingdom. ^ Srry_says that close to 5pO have been^j^jdJ.ent to Christ in

February 191hDear F r i e n d sOn Feb. 3 B i l l and our minis ter , Ed Gean s, went to Mexico totake a used car and some supplies to the Cuyler family. (theLeamons asked Ed to share with you the impressions he receivedfrom his v i s i t . The following i s what he wrote: I t was my d i s t i n c t p riv ile ge to v i s i t recently the Larry Cuylerfamily in Mexico. I n add it io n to receiving a reasonably good persp ectiv e o f t h e i r new work in the c i t y of Matehuala, I was also ableto v i s i t the work they were most instrumental in establ ishing a t theranch i n Sandia Chico. I have every reason to b elie ve t h a t t h e i rwork in the c i t y w i l l not only be an expansion of the o r i g i n a l ranchwork, but w i l l also be f r u i t of t h a t work. The influence the Cuyler shave i n town i s possible only because of t h e i r many years of s e l f l e s sservice i n the r u r a l v i l l a g e s . I am conf ident t h a t new dimensions ofservice and labor are in store for the Cuylers th at w il l great ly producf r u i t f o r th e S av io ur i n the years ahead.I greatly enjoyed my visit to the mission field as i t has greatly enriched my understanding of and appreciation for missionary work, respect for the Cuyler s and a l l missionaries, has been greatly enhanced. During my visit, I came to/ju^ a few of the countless problemsthat face a foreign missionary and th e real need they have for our suppiifter visi t ing Mexico, I can only say, Thank od for families like th eCuylers iThe value of visi t ing th e mission f ield, any mission f ield, cannot beconveyed in words I One v i s i t wil l engrave on your mind more than everthe real work of the Church. I think i t is interesting to note that theword missionary does not appear in the Bible. There is no such concein th e Scripture such as is entertained in many churches today. TheScriptures teach that a ll Christians are comissioned to take the Gospelwith them wherever they go. Jhile in Mexico, I saw the need for preaching the Gospel to a l l the world as I have n ev er s een before. I thappens that Larry Cuyler is willing and able to preach i t in that counThe greatest support we could ever give Larry, or any missionary, is tohold up our end, i . e . to do the work of a Christian right where we are. This will automatically produce the financial .Support for mission work.Financial support, without the personal commitment of ourselves to doingthe same work as the missionary, is empty support. Since we are a l lmissionaries, th e greatest support we can lend to one another, is to dothe work of a missionary in our own place. Then our prayer and monetarysupport is much more meaningful and much more praise-worthy.There is no way I could share with you a l l nor impressions from my vis i t .One thing is sure, I believe od has used this t r i p to teach m many thiI know od will continue to bless my l i f e and enrich my ministry from thexperiences I enjoyed while visit ing the Cuylers. One other thing, i fthe Lord blesses me with another opportunity to v i s i t t he Cuyle rs, I amready t o go.

March-April 1974-Dear Friends ,Thank you so much for your continued prayers and f inancial supportof the Cuyler family, Larry and Garnet are both feeling very goodand so are th e ch ild ren (a l l 10 of them) Praise the LordLarry called to r eques t p raye r for Vincente, the 17 year old Mexicanboy who has l ived with them for quite awhile now. He was driving amotorcycle on the way to Dr. Arroya when it h it a hole in the roadand threw him o f f . No one found him fo r 2 hours and th en th ey tookhim to the poor peoples 'cl inic in Matehuala, That was about 3 P M.The dnly iden t i f ica t ion he had on him l i s t ed his parents in Monterrey,so a telegram was sent to them. They arrived about 1 A.M. and went tothe Cuylers . This was the f i r s t tha t Larry and Garnet knew of theaccident and they were j u s t sick tha t he was in tha t c l in ic . Garnetsays it i s s t ra igh t out of a horror movie They moved him to the hospi t a l in San Luis where his condition i s l i s ted as grave and cri t ical iHe has been in a coma for several days and the doctors are not optomist i c a bo ut s av in g h is l i f e . He i s very in te l l igen t and has done somepreaching, Larry Garnet were financing his education because he hassuch potent ia l . Please remember him and the family in your prayers .His parents are staying with Cuylers. You may remember tha t we have mentioned a I t t t l e 5 yr, old g i r l in ourl e t t e r s . Her name i s Martha, She has been staying id.th Larry Garneever since they got her out of j a i l , where she was staying with hermother. They have ju s t learned tha t her mother may get 4 YEARS inprison for ki l l ing her newborn babies. I f th is turns out to be t rue,Cuylers would l ike to adopt her. Usually in such a case, the child wobe turned over to an oiphanage (Catholic), so i t might be hard to gether back i that should happen. They are praying and working on thesematters so tha t they can keep her without her going to an o rphanage .They also have a Mexican-Araericsin Negro baby. This l i t t l e g i r l i s aboa year old. Her mother i s Mexican and her father American Negro, Shewas born in the U.S. The welfare department was going to take a l l ofthe children away f rom the parents, so the grandmother, who was visi t inthem, took the littl one back to Mexico with her Tha t s a switchThen the grandmother found out she couldn ' t care for her. This s i tuat ion may have worked out by now.As you can see, they have been very busy. XaKcv i s s t i l l teachingEnglish in the high school and holding h is prayer and Bible classes .Ateendance i s very good. keeps busy with the clinic and the 10children P le as e p ra y for them and for these bea t i fu l chi ldren. Theyseek th e Lord 's wil l in a l l they do.

VJhen Me first arrived in rural Mexico, we had intended to start a Children's Home, butthe area seemed so striken with poverty and malnutrition that our minds were changed. The people there resented North Americans very much and at first were extreraeiJy hostile, especially to the Gospel, Several had threatened our lives for preaching and then oneday we were called to help a sick boy. The boy got well and word spread that we couldhelp idth the medical problems. Although we had no previous medical training, a doctorfrom the states gave us many medical supplies and other instructions on how to treat manydiseases, As a res u l t of the l i t t le boy, many people began to come for medicine. We founthe Mexican people to be very proud and would insist that they pay us in some way for themedi.cine and medical services especially when a l i fe was saved. We told them a ll we wanto do was to be able to have Services worship) in their home. Many were very frightenedcause of their ancestoral teaching, bu t because of their pride, they consented to hold serin their homes. s a result there were approximately 500 people won to Christ and 13 congtions established in the rural area. We began looking for leadership and taught about 10to assume responsibilities of the ijvangelist. We were able to purchase a stake truck andone of the Hvangelists to drive. Now he is able to take the Evangelists and people to theplace where the Services were being held,(The area is very primitiveno roads, inside plucars, no doctors, dentists e t c , )Once we felt that the Nationalists could carry on the work, we moved to Matehuala to begina new work and to pu t our children in school. At this point the Lowell T^te family movedto Sandia El Ghlco to help establish new congregations in the area. They are doing a finework and we s t i l l return on Tiiesday and Saturday to t reat diseases in the area.a city of around 35,000 people. We began a congregation with 9 Christians (m.^I'.-o ^ family) and now there are 30 Christians with an average attendance near 4-5- 50 inpi-worship and around 55to 60 in the cliildrens classes, Vfe di d no t Intend to continue themedical work in Matehuala since there were already 7'doctors and 3 clinics. Later on we fthat the doctors refuse to treat the poor unless they can pay. The doctors themselves askus to continue the medical v/ork. As a result, we have 3 clinics, two of those in the rurareas and one in Matehuala,) All patients that have to be interred are put in the Matehuclinic. Worship services are held in the clinic 3 times a week. All patients who are noairectly contageous attend a ll services. As a result many have heard the Gospel fo r thefirst time and will often take i t back to their own villages. Through the medical work, ware reaching people and taking tne Gospel to over 150 villages. Even in Matehuala we havefound a lo t of poverty and sickziess. There is no aid fo r i-/idows and dependent children.have seen manj' children spiritually and plvsically starving. Some mothers have aLmost nomeaas of income and others tr y to make on 50^ a day feeding many children. Many motherhave a ske d us to adopt o r talce t h e i r children to keep them from dyxng. At present we have1 -Pthcr-- ishan-burKaturs^born- s o n s I--t&6iGn iiiH^lisn a t aMiirj^h-Gelio\ML l eve l bo HexLcan students. Dear FriendsFirst we want to report 2 jog^hristi^s in Matehuala^ Also, Vince-nte passed his exams andwaF^le to ^aduate with his class Theceremony began at 11:00 P.M. I Certainly all praise to the Lord forhis recovery from serious injuries in the motorcycle accident. We want to share with you an experience that Larry had recently, a;ndask for your help and prayers. You may remember mention of Alvaro inpast newsletters. He is the other teenage boy who has ULved with Larrand Garnet for quite awhile. He also graduated from High School, Heis a fine young Christian and won his whole family to Christ, includingrandparents . Because of his great potential as a preacherevangeliLarry wanted him to come to the U,S, to take tests at Western Mich,to see where he stood scholasticallyThey got all the papers in ord ^^-dfor ^m to leave the country and thenwent to the American counattf^ n^o^terr^ seek permission for him tenter the U,S. When Larr^v^d Alvaro w4t into the room to talk withhim, he was very rude to th^^VcH^^Wou^xiio even tell Larry what morewas needed for him to legally enterHie country. He WOULDN T even telLarry his NAME, If you know Lariy personally, you KNOW that he wascourteous and Icind, yet even after Larry asked him 3-4 times, he wouldgive them his name. Finally, he did thell them, Larry said his generattitude was that they don t want Mexicans up hereWhen we were trying to get Arnie s papers in oilier, we ran into anotheman vrith this same attitude. He was with the department of immigratioin Hanmond, and we didn t really get through the red tape until he movon We did not seek to bring in an illiterate-person who would tiy totake a job from an American, We wanted to bring in 1 starving littleteby, who would have died of starvation i f he had had to go back to hisfamily, Larry is trying to further the education of an intelligent youman, who speaks English, so that he can better serve our Lord This isa very serious matter because they need passports for their two adoptedchildren as well as, one for Timmy, If he meets with this kind of attitude in the future i t will be almost impossible to get the other passpThey have not had this problem before. We are writting to our Congressman. For now, would you be willing towrite a letter and send i t to Larry, stating your support for them?Would you also state in the letter that if necessary you will write toyour co^res^an? And v/ill you do so i f we write next that i t is needeThe Cuylers have been there for J years and we have letters of highpraise (which he can also use) from officials in Matehuala. We hope i twon t be necessaiy for you to write the additional letter. If he receienough letters from you stating your willingness to do so, he can showthem to the American consul and he may be more co-operative.Thank you for your prayer and financial support. We praise the Lordfor all you do for Him, May God bless you for i t . Please write thatl e t t e r Thanks Yours in Christ

Martha s mother is in prison fo r murdering 2 newborn babies You see here in Mexico theaverage wage for a man is 80^ to 1.50 a day, Awoman averages a day, Martha s mothloved her so much sh e wanted to be able to give her food and clothing. Thus, as her babiwere bom, she killed them. Her neighbors called the police. She has been in jail 9~10months and s t i l l h a sn t had a t r ia l . She says she is guilty. She is veiy repentant butmay have to sejrve 40 years. The judge said she is criminally insane. We have custody ofMartha until her mother gets out of prison, Martha is a very beautiful 6 year old. Shevery sensitive and very bright. Please pray for us that we will have her long enough tosee her soxlL belong to the Lord, When her mother is sentenced we hope to adopt her. I am feeling much better now and have plans for even greater Evangelsim We hope to dosome follow-up work with the people we have made contact with through baseball etc Wealso plan to start some classes on Eldership as there are men in the congjregation in Mate-huala who are qua lif ie d to be Elders,Dear friends, we have never seen times so bad for the Mexican people as now. The pricesof most things are as high as the U.S., yet wages remain almost the same. Bottle gas hasgone up from $4..00 a tank to $9.00 a tank. Food etc., is up accordingly. Because of ther ise in costs and our budget had been down to the penny, we had to make some changes. Nowa n money goes into Evangelsim, food, house payment, rent and gas. We had to l e t 3 of thegirls working for us go. We are really sad about this as 1 g i r l had to support 14- people(13 now as one just died of malnutrition). Two s t i l l have not found new jobs. Pleasepray t ha t e it he r they will find new jobs or that we can receive enough money to hire themagain. They need the money and we need the help at the clinic. Because of high prices anlow wages, people don't even have bus fare to come to town so we have opened up 2 moreclinics. We go back to Sandia Chico Tuesdays and Saturdays, another naral village on Thurdays and Matehuala on Mondays and Fridays, All pat ient s to be admitted are brought to theMatehuala Clinic. We t r e a t as many as 100 people a day. We see many skin problems frommalnutr i t ion, much diarrhea and a l o t of anemia,VJhen the weather was so cold, there was much sickness. Some t r ied to heat sind cook withbottle gas, but the high prices made that impossible. VJood i s hard to get and against thelaw to c u t . We are fortunate as we still have wood on the Sandia Chico property. We havea fireplace, so our house i s reasonably warm i n the winter. The clinic i s a differentmatter. The house there i s very col d i n t he t ^i nt er . We have gone as much as 3 weeks witho u t being able t o buy b o t t l e gas.We really know the Lord wil l provide i n every case. We have seen Him answer prayer so mant imes. Last f a l l our son Ki had a growth on his neck. We took him to 2 doctors. One, as p e c i a l i s t . Both doctors said it was ei ther tuberculin or a malignancy. They ran bloodt e s t s and decided to operate. We called the U.S. and asked friends to be i n prayer. Whenth e Dr. went to operate, the lump was 75% gone. The doctor could hardly believe i t i Wewere a l l grateful . Yes, we have had hard times and people say, Why don' t they qui t and ghome? Friends, t h a t i s j u s t what the devi l would l i k e us t o do lOne day, before Gamet got out of the hospital this l a s t time, the house caught on f i r e .completely destroyed one room and th e whole house was a mess from smoke damage, Sebastiancame i n from s er vic es t o find the g i r l s bedroom ablaze. We s t i l l d o n t know how or wiiy istetrted as there was no one i n the house. The children and I had gone t o v i s i t Gamet i nthe hospita l . We l o s t a l l the g i r l s clothes, t h e i r blankets, pillows and 1 c r i b . We arej u s t t hankfu l they were not asleep i n the i r beds, as they would never have come out aliveThe engineer who b u i l t the house was wonderful t o f i x it up i n t ime t o have Christasas serv

    . ic.es. . A l l rooms have been cleaned.up, painted and r e p l a s t e r e d .We must admit t h a t a l l these t r i a l s sometimes makes us want t o give up and q u i t . But, wehave found t h a t these t r i a l s have been a r e a l witness t o the people here i n town. PerhapsGod allows t h i s to happen j u s t to reach some of the people here i n toim. After the f i r ewe were amazed a t the amount of people i n s to res , on the s t r e e t e t c . who mentioned thef i r e and Garnet 's operations. People we d i d n t think could possibly know about them. Agwe found it a chance t o witness o f our Lord 's b l e s s i n g s .As mentioned before, the services are going w e l l . All classes and services have good crowEven Sunday children's classes run about 60, There have been 5 new Christians this year.The chiirch services and c l i n i c are i n the same house. t works out very well as a l l p a t i ewho can walk or s i t oan. attend services . Also, a l l the c l i n i c help can attend and neverhave t o miss. We find t h a t many, i not most, p a ti en t s r e tu r n t o services from time t o timand some become regularssome have even become Christians, We l ov e s er vi ng the Lord vermuch. Please remember us i n your prayers . There i s so much to be done P le as e p ra y wew i l l have the st rength t o carry on.We wish to thank thV-Harris Prairie Church for their many years of fine service printing amailing our newsle t ter . Due' t o the amount o f people receiving the l e t t e r it i s now imposi b l e for them t o continue, THANK YOU HARRIS PRAIRIE f o r you r h ard work and continued pray
