Learning Engagement Report: Each child should have received, either a written copy or in their eportfolio, a snapshot of their learning engagement for Term 3, so you can see how your child is tracking, before fuller reports are provided at the end of the year. They provide information on how your child is tracking compared to the expected curriculum levels and their disposition to learning (Cust School TIPS).

These judgements are based on a combination of tests, class work and observations. If your child is not meeting the expectations, we encourage you to have a conversation with them in the first instance. If you want further clarification in a particular area then contact the class teacher, so that we can work together to ensure your child is achieving to the levels of which they are capable. We hope that as the year progresses, you will look at the pattern of the grades and where there is variation, ask your child why that variation might have arisen. Speeches: Inspiration...

The last couple of weeks the theme has been ‘speeches.’ All the children presented their speeches to their respective year groups and from these the best went through to the Speech Competition held on Wednesday. The standard continues to be very high and there were lots of interesting facts and twists on the topic. Being a confident speaker in front of an audience is a big skill to have and I love seeing the passion that the children deliver their speeches with. I would like to thank Ros for organising this and also thank the two judges – Margaret Pharazyn and Laura Jennison for judging the competition. Thank you also to Lilly Evers for doing a very good job as the M.C. for the evening.

ROOM THREE Kia ora We have finally reached the end of a busy term. Room 3 have worked tirelessly over the past 10 weeks despite the irregular class routine due to this year's pantomime. ROOM FOUR Kia Ora, Term 3 seems to have flown by! We welcome Reo Lucas who had a pre-school visit this week and also Conor Coffey and his family who have moved into the district. The students did an amazing job of presenting their speeches last Thursday. Thanks for all the lovely support you were able to give the children. School photos went without a hitch and the children all looked lovely. A Learning Engagement Report for your child came home this week. This is a snap shot of your child’s learning engagement in Term 3, so you can see how they are tracking. A fuller report will be provided at the end of the year. Any questions please come and have a chat. Have a safe and restful break over the holidays, Kennys ROOM FIVE Kia Ora, The class should be incredibly proud of themselves. Every student wrote a great speech and stood up to deliver it in front of a large audience. This is not an easy thing to do. We’ve been talking about different types of behaviours this week. Aggressive, passive, passive aggressive and assertive. After analysing the characteristics of each, we all agree that being assertive is something to strive towards. Characteristics of being assertive include standing up for your rights, recognising others rights, accepting your own positive and negative personal traits, respecting self and others, expressing your own needs, ideas and feelings, accepts responsibility for choices, has high self-esteem and relates confidently to others. We will continue to reflect on this next term. I hope the school holidays treat you all well, Eleanor ROOM SIX / SEVEN Kia ora koutou,

Term 3 draws to a close...what a busy time we have all had. A fantastic effort shown by all of our senior students. Highlights have been our school musical production, and the annual Cust School Speech Competition. Well done to all of our tamariki who presented their speeches to their peers. Congratulations to our Year 7 finalists: Sophie Bell, James Gartery, Emily Pye and Alex Walton. Year 8: Bella Eginton-Abbott, Emma Shore, Emma Stephenson, and Aidan Lapslie.

There has been a marked improvement shown by all students in our recently completed novel studies. Well done Room 6 & 7!! We can see you taking ownership of your learning, engaging with new concepts, there is evidence of students beginning to extend their thinking and learning how to write insightful responses. You are developing time management systems that work for you - all skills that will be vital as you move through to secondary school. Mrs Bell, Mr Schuyt and I are all very proud of you.

Our girls' 'Self Defence' course this week has been a very positive and beneficial growth experience.

Thank you to all parents/whanau for your ongoing support. We have a wonderful group of senior students, positive and willing to learn. Wishing all a well-deserved safe, happy and enjoyable holiday.

Nga mihi, Miriam, Annmaree and Robert.

Squishy Squeezy Stress Balls I made these with a few children this week and they have been very popular. They are a great way to use old play-dough and awesome for practising fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills over the holidays. They also provide heaps of proprioceptive and tactile sensory input. Gather some things: 3-4 balloons per person Play-dough Scissors A funnel A rubber glove Here we go:

1. Place the neck of the balloon over the funnel. 2. Put on a glove and squish the play-dough down the funnel to fill the balloon.

Note – the glove is not essential. I have found the play-dough sticks to your fingers and has trouble staying in the funnel but it does not stick to a glove.

3. Once the balloon is the desired size (a nice size for the child to hold in their palm), tie it off and trim the end of the balloon. Remove any air bubbles before tying.

4. Cut the next next balloon where the neck begins to widen. You may need to inflate and deflate it first to make it a little stretchier.

5. Gently stretch the balloon over the ball, covering where you trimmed the ball in step 3. 6. Repeat 4 and 5 until your balloon is the desired resistance. Fewer balloons make it squishier; many

balloons make it harder (and less likely to burst…) 7. Done. Now squish it, squeeze it, pass it, toss it, catch it and keep it away from Gran’s

china and the puppy… Have fun! Some more cool ideas: Draw an emoji face or cut little holes in the outer balloon so the under colour shows. Make an All Blacks themed black and white one. Go the All Blacks!! Try it with different fillers: rice, clay, couscous, sand, baking powder, flour… I find play-dough has the nicest squishiest feel. Baking soda makes a very dense ball, and flour is somewhere in the middle. Another fun way with balloons: Place one balloon inside another. Put a little water in the inside balloon and tie. Inflate the outside balloon and tie. This balloon has a mind of its own… Have fabulous school holidays! Kate Cain, Occupational Therapist.
