RESEARCH Current Research Support Global Institute for Hispanic Health, “Hospital asthma discharges and its relation with hazardous air pollutant.” This study will facilitate understanding the correlation between HAP emissions and hospital admissions in individuals with asthma living in communities in close proximity to areas with high emissions. Role: Carrillo (PI) $25,000 August 1, 2018- July 30, 2020 Knapp Community Care Foundation, “The Role of Maternal Diabetes & Obesity in Reproductive Health Outcomes.” The main objective of the project is to design a culturally competent outreach program for women of reproductive age (15-44) in the Mid-Valley, TX area. A culturally competent program is a patient-centered approach, incorporating patients’ needs and preferences, as well as barriers to care, and possible environmental exposures. Role: Carrillo (Co-I) $349,640.00 March 1, 2018- April 31, 2021 Conacyt-TAMU, “Health Outcomes of Water Insecurity in Urban Mexico: A Pilot Project.” The focus of this project advances the social science of household water insecurity by developing data-driven, empirically sound metric to link how different levels of water (in)security impact the well-being of individuals and public health. Indeed, our research question to address this binational problem is: what is the relationship between water insecurity and water-related disease? Role: Carrillo (PI) $24,000 January 1, 2018- December 2018 Healthy South Texas, “State of Texas Special Item Funding”. The focus of this Year 3 HST Asthma Program will be expansion of educational interventions to Mission, and Alton. This year will focus on medication adherence, and a curriculum will be developed for parents and CHW. Collaboration will be done with pharmacy and nursing students for education of participants. Role: Carrillo (PI) $ 200,000 September 1, 2017-August 31, 2018 Environmental Protection Agency, “Working on capacity building to improve Children’s Environmental Health”. The project will focus on Head Start Centers (directors and personnel), Independent School District (parents), and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) [pregnant women] through the implementation of an integrated approach providing Indoor Air Quality, Integrated Pest Management, Lead Education, and an Environmental Exposures for Pregnant Women Curriculum. In addition to those populations, we will also train Community Health Workers (CHWs) through The Colonias Program. Role: Carrillo (PI) $ 49,000 January 1, 2018- January 1, 2019 Completed Research Projects
