CuroCell Cirrus - Case Studies
Before the trial extremely high doses of breakthrough medication were required overnight with minimal effect. After
the introduction of the Cirrus mattress a palliative care pain scoring tool was introduced on a twice daily basis which
showed a considerable drop in pain expressed by the patient. Breakthrough doses of medication were also reduced
from x4 nightly to x1 or nil which resulted in a more restful night for the patient. Overall there has been considerable
improvement in the patient’s quality of life as well as clinical improvement.
District Nurse
The patient who used it was a young woman who had advanced malignant disease and spinal cord
compression. She was at severe risk of pressure damage but found the traditional airwave mattress
uncomfortable, due to the fluctuating cells and was disturbed by the noise of the motor. She found the
previous mattresses unacceptable and asked to return to a static high grade mattress.
When the Cirrus became available to us she was transferred to it and found it to be very comfortable. Her
pressure areas remained intact over the four weeks she was on the mattress. The motor was silent, a huge
benefit when she wanted to sleep.
We will certainly use these mattresses in the future.

I have advised the family that the PCT are to pay for its hire and they are absolutely thrilled that the patient will be able to continue to reap the benefits of this impressive piece of equipment. It’s made a real difference to her comfort. Regards,
Care Manager (Rehabilitation)
Due to always being in pain on the alternating mattress, the patient was very reluctant to be moved so giving bowel care and relieving pressure was a real challenge. We moved him to an Oska Cirrus mattress and in the first couple of days he had a very noticeable reduction in pain killers. We were able to do daily bowel care as he allowed us to move him as he could be positioned comfortably on the Cirrus. He said he loved the mattress and did not slip down the bed anymore and his appetite improved. Hospice Nurse
A lady with MND was referred to me, by Community Nursing, with regards to her comfort and pressure relief, during her end of life care. I tried numerous pressure relieving systems with her, however all failed due to comfort issues. The Cirrus mattress proved to be very comfortable and maintained her skin integrity throughout. She passed away 3 weeks after having the mattress and her husband kindly called me to inform me of this and to say thanks for the loan of the Cirrus mattress as it had proved to be invaluable with comfort during her final weeks. Hospice patients have found the Oska Cirrus mattress extremely comfortable to sleep on, including patients with severe bone pain. With the mattress also providing necessary pressure relief these
mattresses are constantly in use within the hospice.

Previously we hired and purchased mattresses from ..., however following a trial of the Cirrus mattress found these to have more functionality and much quieter with very good feedback from patients. Director of Clinical Services
Patient feedback has been very positive, especially from those who have not liked traditional air flow mattresses.
One commented 'I don't feel sea sick like I did on the other one'. Others have commented how comfortable they
are and how quiet they are.
We have observed that patients tend not to slide down the bed as much and more importantly when they are sitting
on the edge of the bed they do not slide off - these mattresses are much more supportive during sitting/standing
transfers.
Governance Manager
Just to let you know that the patient is finding the mattress very comfortable, he tells me he is sleeping much better. Ward Manager
Prior to using the Cirrus, patients often requested to be taken off their air mattress because they found the old air
mattresses both noisy and uncomfortable. Patient feedback on the Cirrus mattress has been excellent.

For the first time after trying so many different products, our patient has been able to sleep properly at night -

Please accept this short letter as recommendation for the ‘pain’ mattress that we have hired from you on several occasions. We have required this equipment to support a patient who has received spinal and pelvic injuries in the course of his duties. He had been unable to sit up for eight months. The mattress aided his comfort and greatly relieved his pain. Regards, SR Phyllis Neal DMRC-Headley Court.
He was switched from another high risk alternating mattress to a Cirrus and the benefits were
immediately evident. The resident straight away reported improved quality sleep in a more supportive
comfortable mattress. His wife reports that she has her husband back!

The resident suffers severe, sustained muscle contractions, causing immense pain and discomfort. She often
complained about her mattress due to ‘bottoming-out’.
The Cirrus mattress was well received by our lady. She particularly likes the sitting position which provides her with
increased comfort and support at meal times. She is able to sleep for longer periods and with the added benefit of a
silent motor. She reports increased comfort and feels more relaxed and supported. This has had a positive impact on
her mood with less pain and disruption. When asked, the resident exclaimed “Please let me keep this mattress!”
Our patients have found this mattress so comfortable compared to our other airwave mattresses.
