Larry Channave(1933-2007)

By Horace Meunier HarrisAFCDJS Member (U.K.)

The AFCDJS haslost a staunch andvalued friend. Sohave I. LarryChannave and hisHigh Society JBappeared at everyF e s t i v a lexcepting the veryfirst one. It was a

happy day for me when by chance ourpaths crossed at the first of the 11Festivals I attended, and we becamefirm friends.

Larry, whose name was Ilario, wasborn in that area of New York Stateknown as the Finger Lakes, and tookup trumpet at an early age. He marriedhis childhood sweetheart, Lorena(Renie), and had a successful careerwith General Dynamics, which tookthem to Florida and finally California.

Here he formed the High SocietyJBin 1979, developing an individual andpersonalized Chicago style, whichbecame very popular with a strongaudience following apparent at theFestivals and elsewhere. His owncornet lead was accurate and clear, his solos were well constructed andhis vocals were distinctive andentertaining. I was pleased to assistin a small way the putting together ofh i s a lways apprec ia ted spec ia lprogram called “Louis, His Times andWives.”

His love of Louis Armstrong wasprofound and he latterly achieved agreat ambition — to visit the former

PASSINGS Armstrong home at Corona, NY,where he was allowed to play one ofLouis’ trumpets (pictured here).

Larry was much more than apopular and engaging jazzman. I havemuch to thank him for. I composedthe first of my always previously-typed articles on his computer underhis tutelage. He showed me the finerpoints of a Bloody Mary in the bar atthe historic La Valencia Hotel in LaJolla. He introduced me to the PalmSprings Follies and the Napa ValleyWine Train. He took me annually tovisit the great John Best, to reminisceabout the classic big band days — thefine Museum of Making Music atCarlsbad; the excellent museums inBalboa Park; a Caesar salad atCaesar’s Restaurant in Tijuana. Icould go on....

As I wrote in the Jazz Rambler(July-Aug. 2002), “He is a naturalleader and has created a personalident i ty for the band, which iscomposed of a set of very giftedmusicians. The secret of their successis that he and they understand theneed to entertain as well as to impressan audience, resulting in a devotedand loyal following.”

I cannot put it any better than that.He will be much missed.

In the spirit of Larry Channave andthe High Society Jazz Band, live musiccontinues each Wednesday night at TioLeo's on Morena Blvd. in San Diego.

(This is the 64th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians.)

By Hal SmithAFCDJS President

James D. McPartland was only 21when he stepped into the OKeh studioin Dec., 1927 for a recording date withMcKenzie and Condon’s Chicagoans. The results are some of the first — andbest — recorded examples of classic“Chicago Style” Jazz.

Despite his age at the time of therecording, McPartland was actually aseasoned veteran in 1927. As a teenagerhe listened to the music of King Oliver’sCreole Jazz Band, the New OrleansRhythm Kings and the many dance bandsthat worked in the Chicago area. Butthe magical sound of Bix Beiderbeckeconfirmed the direction that the youngcornetist would follow for the rest of hislife. He even replaced his idol with theWolverines, when Bix left to work withJean Goldkette. Later, McPartlandplayed with several Midwestern dancebands, then joined one of the greatest— Ben Pollack and his Orchestra.

While there are some good“Chicago” moments on Pollack’srecordings, the McKenzie-Condon 78sare textbook illustrations of the style. With McPartland on cornet, the bandwas made up of several musicians whoattended Austin High School in Chicago:Frank Teschemacher (clarinet), BudFreeman (tenor sax), Joe Sullivan(piano), Jim Lannigan (bass/tuba), GeneKrupa (drums) and Condon on banjoand guitar. (Vocalist Red McKenziepromoted the band to OKeh but did not

sing during the first session.) “Sugar,”“China Boy,” “Nobody’s Sweetheart”and “Liza” feature the “explosion,”“flare,” “stop-and-go” and “shufflerhythm” in abundance. (Though rarelyplayed today, these devices can be heardon subsequent recordings by small bandssuch as Muggsy Spanier’s Ragtimersand Bob Crosby’s Bobcats. McPartlandalso continued to use these Chicago“tricks” for the rest of his career.) As great as the McKenzie-Condonrecords were, the band was not able tofind work as a group. McPartland stayedwith Ben Pollack until 1929, thenbecame a freelance musician, movingback and forth between New York andChicago. During this time he played onmany jam sessions at the home ofattorney and jazz fan Edwin “Squirrel”

Ashcraft. Ashcraft helped McPartlandland a recording date with Decca in1936. McPartland recorded for Deccaagain in 1939, as part of the “ChicagoJazz” album, produced by GeorgeAvakian. The four sides byMcPartland’s band are steeped in theidiosyncracies of Chicago style. In 1942 McPartland joined the U.S.Army, later taking part in the invasionof Normandy. He was playing in aservice band when he met British pianistMarian Page, whom he married in 1945. Back in the U.S., McPartland settledin Chicago, though he continued to workfrequently in New York as bandleaderand sideman. He acted in the TVpresentation “The Magic Horn” andappeared in the movie “Jazz Dance.” During the 1960s, he was featured ina number of “Chicago Jazz” reunions,on records, on tv and in l iveperformance, with Pee Wee Russell,Bud Freeman, Eddie Condon and others. Jimmy McPartland never lost hisaffection for Chicago-style jazz or themusic of Bix Beiderbecke. (His cornetwas a gift from Bix whose influenceremained as close as the mouthpiece).Still, McPartland had a sound of hisown that was at once affirmative butgentle, a very personal interpretation ofthe Beiderbecke style. He continued toplay tasteful (but exciting) jazz until hedied in Port Washington, NY in 1991. Starting with the Wolverinesrecordings of 1924, there is much toadmire in Jimmy McPartland’s cornetplaying. But it is difficult to imagineany better example of his talent than thefiery 1927 sides that introduced ChicagoStyle to the jazz world!
