Co-leader Bruce Vermazen advises that several songs from the new CD such as Red Wing, American Beauty Rag, That’s a Plenty, Alabama Jubilee and Get Out and Get Under will be performed. A track from the orchestra’s previous CD (Panama, from “That’s a Bear”) was recently used for the soundtrack of the film “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond.” The film, currently in production, is based on a play by Tennessee Williams, discovered after the playwright’s death. The film’s cast includes Ellyn Burstyn and Ann-Margret. Previously, the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra has performed for the AFCDJS monthly concert-dance series, the West Coast Ragtime Festival (Sacramento) and the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival. The Orchestra will return to the Thanksgiving Fest in 2008 and will also play some special sets with John Gill (see Festival update, p. 1). In addition to co-leader Vermazen on trumpet, the Orchestra is comprised of: Co-leader Bob Pinsker, piano; Ed Henson, cornet; AFCDJS Executive Director Alan Adams, trombone; Fernando Herrera, flute/piccolo; Everett Crouse, clarinet; Patrick McMahon, tenor sax; Cheryl and Daniel Swem, violins; John Winkelman, tuba; and Ed Ducharme, drums. For an afternoon of high-stepping Ragtime, WWI-Era dance music and John Gill will pay musical tribute to vocalist Bing Crosby at the 29th Annual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival – Nov. 26-30, 2008 at the Town & Country Resort and Hotel on San Diego’s Hotel Circle. Gill will sing Crosby’s music on two sets with the Sentimental Serenaders – including musicians from the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra plus guest artist Katie Cavera on banjo and guitar. Gill will also play trombone with his own Delta Stompers (a New Orleans-style jazz band) and Ms. Cavera will be heard with a number of groups — including her own combos — during the Festival weekend. In addition to the Delta Stompers, Sentimental Serenaders and Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra, other Traditional groups at the Festival include the Buck Creek Jazz Band, Grand Dominion Jazz Band , Uptown Lowdown , Natural Gas Jazz Band, Titanic Jazz Band, Blue Street Jazz Band, Coyote Hills Jazz Band Night Blooming Jazzmen and San Diego’s own Dixie Express. Several Festival bands and musicians have roots in swing: Tim Laughlin’s New Orleans All Stars with Connie Jones, the Fulton Street Jazz Band, Statesmen of Jazz/Clarinet Summit, Cornet Chop Suey, Sue Palmer and September - October, 2008 Motel Swing and the High Society Jazz Band (with vocalist Eva Emingerová from the Czech Republic) and guest artists John Cocuzzi and Chloe Feoranzo. Pianists Mimi Blais. Carl Sonny Leyland, Ray Skjelbred and Chris Dawson perform several different styles of keyboard material. Virginia Tichenor plays classic and contemporary Ragtime. The music known variously as “Roots,” “Americana” and “Rockabilly” can be heard at the Festival, played by The Hayriders (including some high-profile traditional jazz and swing musicians) and the Cash Kings, a Johnny Cash tribute band led by guitarist/bassist/vocalist Johnny D’Artenay, who also performs with Dixie Express and the Hayriders. The Jazz Ensemble and the Mission Bay High Dixie Band showcase outstanding young musical talent from the San Diego area. Dick Williams’ JazzSea Jams will appeal to Festival attendees who want to do more than just listen. These organized jam sessions will be scheduled throughout the weekend and all instrumentalists are welcome! On Sunday morning (Nov. 30), a Jazzdagen Tours Cruise will depart San Diego, with the Statesmen of Jazz/ Clarinet Summit and an incredible roster of all-star musicians performing onboard. For those who choose to stay on dry land, the Buck Creek Jazz Band will play the final two sets of the Festival from 5-7pm, a performance that not only winds up the 29th Annual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival, but is the band’s final appearance at any jazz festival! (This is the 70th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians.)

By Hal SmithPresident, AFCDJS

Trumpeter Henry “Red” Allen wasone of the most inventive andinspirational trumpeters in the historyof Jazz. Even on his earliest recordings,Allen’s daring improvisational skillswere evident. Right up to his untimelydeath, he continued to dazzle othermusicians and fans with his avant-gardelead, phrasing and advanced harmonicsense.

Henry James Allen Jr. was born inAlgiers, Louisiana (across theMississippi River from New Orleans)on Jan. 7, 1906. His father, Henry Sr.,was cornetist and leader of the AllenBrass Band—one of the best in an areathat was known for its outstanding brassbands. (At various times, Joe “King”Oliver and Louis Armstrong played withthe Allen Brass Band, together withmany other giants of New Orleans Jazz).Allen Jr. (known as “Sonny” and “BifflyBam”) listened to Oliver, Armstrong,Buddy Petit, Chris Kelly, Kid Rena anda number of great New Orleanstrumpeters and took lessons fromManuel “Fess” Manetta and AmosWhite. By the early 1920s, Allen Jr.was accomplished enough to play withhis father’s brass band—sometimes onsnare or bass drum. Soon he was playingcasuals in bands led by George Lewisand Paul Barnes. He organized his owngroup in 1923. During this time heacquired the nickname “Red.” As helater explained, “I was light skinnedand my face got red when I blew.”

He continued to develop his ownstyle and by playing along with recordsat different speeds, was able toeventually play songs in any key. Thiswas a huge advantage when the youngtrumpeter began to work withdemanding bandleaders such as FateMarable and Fletcher Henderson, whoexpected their musicians to readarrangements which were often writtenin difficult keys.

In 1927, Allen joined King Oliver’sOrchestra (which included fellow NewOrleanians Kid Ory, Omer Simeon,Barney Bigard, Paul Barnes and PaulBarbarin) in St. Louis. Oliver’s bandmoved on to New York, and a stand atthe Savoy Ballroom opposite ChickWebb’s Orchestra. Despite theinspirational musical surroundings,Allen became homesick. He returnedto New Orleans, but not before makinghis first recording—with ClarenceWilliams.

Back in New Orleans, Allen workedwith a variety of bands until he wasoffered a job on the Streckfus SteamboatLine by Captain Joe Streckfus. Allen

played up and down the MississippiRiver as a member of Fate Marable’sOrchestra aboard the S.S. Capitol.During a stop in Memphis, Allen wasdiscovered by Loren Watson, who wasconnected with the Victor TalkingMachine Company. Watson told Allenthat he could record under his own nameon the Victor label if he was in NewYork City. While he was consideringthe offer, he received invitations to jointhe Luis Russell Orchestra and DukeEllington’s Orchestra, both based inNew York City. Allen chose to acceptthe offer from Russell. That Orchestraincluded several friends from NewOrleans — Albert Nicholas, PopsFoster, Paul Barbarin and Russell —plus a trombonist who would becomeone of Allen’s closest musicalassociates: J.C. Higginbotham.

To be continued.
