What does “Curate” mean ?• “Curate” in general terms, means a range of activities and

processes done to create, manage, maintain and validate a component.

• A museum may take charge of an object, • An art gallery may organise an art exhibit or curate a photography

Show.• Curate means to make sense of , to pull together, to sift through and

select for presentation, as music, or website content.

Page 3: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

The new curriculum and digital curation

• Internet technology has provided a global classroom where students not only share information, tools and workspaces but create new works online (i.e. using mixed media, social networking, wikis, blogs, reflections).

• In meeting the content and general capabilities of the new Australian curriculum, the teacher librarian will need considerable background material and to filter the prolific content available for students.

• Digital Curation therefore helps provide carefully selected, relevant and quality resources through guided search for enquiry based research.

Page 4: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

• The teacher librarian acts like a human filter-providing quality resources for the needs of students and education programs.

• Curation tools help to organise types of information and help with professional publishing.

• There are many formats for Digital curation- data can show links and also provide annotations to highlight aspects of a topic or theme.

• Curation tools can help students to manage daily school programs and for personal creative pursuits.

Pros Cons

Most tools are easy to join and install and allow users to play with content sharing .

Tools could encourage violations of copyright/plagiarism

May suit non-academic/ESL students with formats such as photo and video sharing.

Author or validated source is difficult to trace once curation tools are used. May miss links etc, and correct information

Students can enjoy enrichment from curated professional sites and examples.

Limited website controls so website is visible to all users.-safety issues.

Can brainstorm and then keep for a later research. Many types of tools to suit functions (photos, videos, blogs ,etc).

Some require signing in with personal information so could pose safety issue.

The implications of Curation tools.

Curation tools make it easy to collect , post and group areas of content for school and other pursuits.

Page 6: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

Collective Curation

• With the overload of information…making effective and safe use of the internet is essential.

• Working in groups allows for collective curation- each contributor works on a small sub-area to help the group.

• A filter bubble is where users only learn from one group or source.

• Collective curation therefore enables expansion of concepts & formats, varied knowledge from experts, wisdom on specific content to broaden and help the collective whole.

Page 7: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

Why Curation ?

• Curation, as an approach to bringing digital and media literacy competencies into the classroom, can help build meaningful teaching and learning approaches for today’s participatory media landscape.” Mihailidis (2013)

• All learners can be sharers and collectors using their own curated sites.

• Story telling is one way of using online curation :photos, videos, written blogs, group projects ,portfolios ,comments about experiences.

• Core skills taught using curation are critical inquiry, analysis, organisation and evaluation.

Page 8: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

• Be easy to use and allow users to save and publish at anytime.

• Allow content to be gathered and shared with selected audience/ group or the wider community.

• Allow the curator to edit / comment/ upload/add in varied media and have audience comments (analytics).

• May track usage to the site for personal feedback.(business)

• Has a way of sharing to other sites through links.

Some features of useful curation tools

Page 9: Curation- Why is it an important life skill ?

• “Curation platforms are tools which help you to personally select online content, to edit it and share it.”(Social compare website)

• Teachers need to learn to take risks, to tinker, to allow time for students to develop curation skills.

• L, Shearing has composed a helpful tools website http://cooltoolsforschools.wikispaces.com/Collaborative%2BTools

• Lets start by examining 10 free tools and some of their useful features…

Summary on curation• New curation tools present an exciting new genre of search tool, a tool for scanning

the real-time environment, as well as opportunities for evaluating quality and relevance in emerging information landscapes. Valenza,J (2011)

• All Students can learn to curate and create through story telling. They learn the skills of critical enquiry, analysis, organisation and evaluation, they can share their work in groups and receive feedback.

• Teacher librarians need to explore technology, tinker and not be afraid to learn along side students.

• There are many curation tools for many types of curation projects so allowing time for participatory learning experiences is an important aspect for the teacher librarian in developing student’s curation skills for school and toward life-long learning.

• “There is freedom in stepping out and taking risks when you know at any given moment, you can always begin again.” ― Eva Gregory
