  • The importance of infographics and graphic brand inthe mediatisation of Naturaland CulturalHeritage

    Many municipalities see tourism asan opportunity fordevelopment intheir regionand tomake asignificant investment inmediaand publicity means toattract tourists.

    Forthis reason,there mustbe aclearand conscious initial planning,establishing arelationship between the objectives,content,graphic designandphysical location.

    However, there arestill many examples of "poor"information being available aboutheritage places,which canbe decisive forthe success of atourist place.

    The heritage needs tobe communicated,informed andaccessible toan audience thatsometimes is completely unaware of what they arevisiting.

  • This study highlights the importance of infographics and graphic identity intheinterpretation,presentation and dissemination of Naturaland CulturalHeritage,andinprompting visitors todirect their attention moreclosely tothe singularities anddistinct Heritage aspects of aplace.

    Theimportance ofinfographicsandgraphicbrandinthemediatisation ofNaturalandCulturalHeritage

    We analyse the roleof the Designerasan information and communication catalystand indisseminating and preserving the memory of different heritage specificitiesthrough the graphic objects he/she produces.

    We also assess howgraphic brand and infographics contribute tobetter structuring,clarifying and “visualizing”information,and emphasize how this is critical totheunderstanding of all aspects of apatrimonialdestination.

  • The InformationDesignmay be indispensable foragreaterapprehensionand legibility inthe communicationof theheritage message by presenting visually and exclusively,information that disseminates unique aspects of the Naturaland CulturalHeritage of aplace.

  • NewMaya Language - FridaLarios

    FridaLarios studied howshe could adaptMayawriting through amorecontemporaryuseand the result of her six-year researchis agraphic system that she called “NewMaya Language”.

    Larios redesigned someideograms of this culture tocommunicate concepts andcompletesentences,revealing how these symbols canbe interpreted and combined.

    Inthis case,we consider that the Heritage is reinterpreted and reinvented andpreserved its memory through amodern graphic approach,integrated inaHeritageplace considered World Heritage of Unesco,Joya deCerén,inElSalvador.

    Collection of stamps of ahistorical event,the Battle of Trafalgar,which contains alotof data.

    Through ahighly simplified visuallanguage,we have access toinformation on how theseamen were fed, the location of the Battle of Trafalgar,how many men the crew hadand from which countriesthey originated,among many other data.

    We find an interesting example of the simplified and graphic formwith which PeterGrundy tells us this historical episode.

    This project of infographics of the Parks of Sintra,began in2007,through the order of theCompany of Parks of Sintra-MontedaLua(PSML)tothe company specialized inInfography,Anyforms;

    The flyers began tobe 5but currently are8.

    This is an example of high quality using infographics,contributing greatly tothe increasedawareness of the existing and protectedNaturaland CulturalHeritage (according toLuisTaklim,company owner,these flyers have increased the flow of visitors and contributed toagreater guidance and exploration of the places).

    This project is very significant because it was created the brand Brooklyn Downtown(developed by the American company of Information Design,Two Twelve).

    The finalresult was alengthy researchinvolving residents,tourists and businesspeople tomake the territory and opportunities better understood.

    The logoand slogan"You CanSee the World From Here" were the starting motto todefinethe positioning of the project,the wayfinding strategy and the signage design.

  • RESULTSAn attractive Heritage presentation is known tobe crucialforthe successfulmediatisation of Naturaland CulturalHeritage.

    Among the new technologies, we also highlight the useof 3Dtechnology (example ofAnyforms’s work)that allows communicationmoreeffectively on the scenes orobjects that have intrinsic three-dimensionalcharacteristics.

    Newinfographic technologies and audiovisual languages canaccomplish this bycommunicating complex processesinto simple,understandable information,thusproviding ahigh-quality culturalexperience tovisitors.

    The Information Designerstandsouthere asa"transformer" by giving meaning tothe rawdata,giving it organization and consequently informational value,contributing tothememorization and knowledge,being responsable topresent acomplex informationalmessage inan accessible and simple way tounderstand without losing its content.

    Heritage signage such aswayfinding systems should additionally convey astrongmessage that reinforces alocal’s culturalbrand.

    Somewayfinding projects linked toHeritage sitesor cities have contributed tothepresentation of information inpublic spaces,helping tofacilitate the visitor'sexperience and access toinformation about the places.

    The definition or association of abrand toaheritage area contributes tothe definitionof its identity,transmitting content,images,ephemeral sensations that help toformpsychological concepts about the place,reinforcing the "soulof the place".

    Through the examples studied,we tried tojustify all these premises.

    The way the Heritage is communicated canbe preponderant togive reasons andmotivations tothe tourists,tochoose aplace tovisit,communicating its symbols andsigns,causing the tourist toform amentalimage inrelation tothe destination tobevisited.

  • The Culturaland NaturalHeritage arebasicresources forsetting up atouristdestination toan audience that is increasingly demanding and that seeks toknow thedistinctive and specific aspects of aplace that characterize the Heritage.

    FINALREMARKS

    Forthis reason,Information Design asadiscipline,is essential inthe development ofpromotional and informationalmaterials that seek toattract morepublic,that areinterested inmoreparticularissues of aregion,contributing toits development,valuing important regionaland localspecificities tomake known,memorization andconservation of particularnaturaland culturalheritage aspects.
