    CUBISM

    INTRODUCTION:

An art movement staged in the early twentieth centuy.

(The word cubism reffers to an art movement led by two of the greatest artists of all time namely

    piccasso and georges braque.)(shaheera)

PIONEERS: pablo piccasso and Georges Braque.

    1. What is cubism? In Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form.(it is basically the

root of geometric abstraction.) (shaheera)2.what is geometric abstraction?

one doesn't paint aboutanything - one just paints.(artists at the start of the early twentieth

century believed that copying objects could be done better by using the newly invented

camera.they did not want to make something that already existed.they wanted to see the

    world in new ways.) (mahwash)

    3.Representational abstraction:

    THE KISS:

(The sculpure is perhaps the greatest example of representational abstraction. The reason

being that the sculptor has carried out the abstraction whilst retaining the identity of the

    intended form.) (summaiya)

(now that we know the concept behind the movement it is necessary that we find out how it

    got its name.)

CUBISM ORIGIN OF THE NAME.*Houses Near l'Estaque.George Braque 1908

(this painting made by one of the pioneers of cubism is what gave the movement its name.the

artist intended to paint trees and houses while giving it an abstract twist. however When the

critic saw this painting he said the houses "look like a bunch of little cubes." He meant the

comment to be insulting but the name Cubism stuck.Hence the name is somewhat accidental

and contrary to what the name may suggest it does not revolve around cubes.)(hafsa)

PURPOSE : (now we shall come to the movements purpose)

To look beyond what we see.

    1. Breaking objects and displaying them into fragments. (analytical cubism)

    2. Using synthetic materials to form collages on canvas.(synthetic cubism) (read these both

    aloud)

the Cubists challenged conventional forms of representation, such as perspective.

Their aim was to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the modern age.hence

according to artists photography was takingplace of painting as the tool for documenting the age

so they needed a 'new way of seeing' that expanded the possibilities of art in the same way that

technology was extending the boundaries of communication and travel. This new way of seeing was

called Cubism - the first abstract style of modern art.) (mahwash)

CUBISM AND ITS KINDS: (the two most important art forms affected by the movement were

    painting and sculpture.)

    1.PAINTING

Cubist painting dealt with a fusion of observation, memories and reality represented in 3-d.

(the purpose of painting in cubism was representing a 3-d object on a 2-d surface breaking the

    boundaries of perspective. ) (shaheera)

    2.SCULPTURE

Cubist sculpture is rooted in the reduction of painted objects into component planes and geometric solids.

(according to the british art critic penelope cruz Cubism was more interesting in Paintingwhere it

showed in two dimensions how to represent three dimensionsthan in sculpture" the reason being that it is

absurd to state that Cubist sculpture, like painting, is not limited to a single point of view. However both

painting and sculpture no longer merely recorded sensations generated through the eye; but resulted fromthe intelligence of both artist and observer. This gave rise to new possibilities of how one views the world.)(hafsa)

Examples : (explain them all summaiya)

    INFLUENCE:

Cubism was born in France but emigrated across Europe and integrated with the artistic

consciousness of several countries. It also influenced several of the major design and architectural

styles of the 20th century .

EXAMPLES IN ARCHITECTURE:Cubist buildings are often designed to be manufactured as

prefabricated buildings and moved from the factory to the building site where they

    are assembled.

(A direct link between Cubist Art and Cubist Architecture does not exist. However

both share the same characteristic of dealing with geometrical shapes and

forms. However architects have shown flexibility in terms of material usage)

    (mahwash)

    Examples:

    Shaheera will explain the examples.

(IT CAN BE SEEN HOW CONVENTIONAL ARCHITECTURE IS DIFFERENT FROM CUBIST

    ARCHITECTURE BY THE ABOVE COMPARISION)

    CONCLUSION: (hafsa)

(the idea of cubism can be summed up by quoting the wise words of a famous american writer

    on pablo piccassos cubism movement.)

He(Piccasso) commenced the long struggle not to express what he could see but to express

the things he could not see

    THANKYOU.
