Growth . Odd l y not someth i ng I thought a great dea l about when start i ng CTC , but someth i ng that i n many ways , found us .

When I f i r s t met Jerem i ah Kur i a , CTC ' s Kenya D i rector , over 10 years ago i n the town of Maa i Mah i u , ne i ther of us ever i ntended to create (to grow) what has become CTC Internat i ona l . Our week l y l unch conversat i ons typ ica l l y compr i s ed of the top ic , “opportun i ty “ and how commun i t i e s i n Kenya are just as capab l e , just as i nte l l i g ent , just as savvy to prov i de for themse l ve s as commun i t i e s i n the Western wor l d , but l ack the opportun i t i e s to do so . It was that focus on prov i d i n g opportun i ty comb i ned w i th our fr i endsh i p and comm i tment to one another that drove CTC to what i t i s today .

There are a l l types of ways to grow a company : rap i d start up , a focus to grow the bus i nes s to a certa i n po i nt and then se l l , s l ow and steady , etc . CTC i s the l ater . It ' s now a funny story ; a few years ago , I kept try i ng to pa i nt an ana logy to the CTC team i n Kenya that we d i dn ' t need to h i t any more “home runs “ . We had reached a certa i n thresho l d of success and now we just needed so l i d base h i t s . We l l as you can imag i ne , baseba l l ana l og i e s weren ' t rea l l y work i ng for Kenyans .

A few days l ater Jerem i ah and I were v i s i t i n g another commun i ty w i th some partners , when a loca l street vendor asked us i f we wanted to buy , “ these n ice l eather shoes , how ' bout these lo ve l y be l t s , how ' bout a mob i l e phone “ . . . o n and on unt i l he pu l l s out an odd creature and says , “how ' bout th i s l o ve l y torto i se? “ I immed i ate l y l ooked at Jerem i ah and sa i d , “That ' s i t . . . we ' re torto i se s and we ' re buy i ng that torto i se ! “

Harvey , as we l i ke to ca l l h im , has become the mascot of CTC . And i t just so happens that the c l a s s i c story of the torto i se and the hare crosses the cu l tura l d i v i de , resonat i ng w i th our Kenya team as we l l . . . s l ow and steady w i n s the race .

Th i s has been the natura l pace for CTC and we p l an to cont i nue grow i ng just the same . So much of deve l opment attempts to grow through the dynam ic of Western so l ut i ons to Afr ican prob l ems . As you can imag i ne , th i s on l y works to create an unhea l thy power dynam ic where Afr ican commun i t i e s must c l i mb towards so l ut i ons that i nev i tab l y w i l l not work . My fr i endsh i p w i th Jerem i ah and the re l at i onsh i p s w i th the peop l e of the commun i t i e s we serve have showed me just how much I have to l earn a long th i s journey . Together we are wa lk i ng the journey . . . s l ow and steady . . . l i ke Harvey the torto i se , towards a dest i nat i on of mutua l empowerment .

B i g Love , Zane

> 2012 STORY: 10 YEARS OF GROWTH

It i s tru l y a wonder to look back and see how far we have come . I wake w i th great joy each morn i ng , thankfu l for the work that we do and humb l ed to be a part of what i s now the l a rgest emp loyer i n Maa i Mah i u , Kenya .

A s a l e a d e r i n t h e c o m m u n i t y f o r o v e r 1 0 t e n y e a r s , t h e r e w a s n o t h i n g m u c h t o o f f e r t h o s e w h o c a m e t o m e s u f f e r i n g f r o m h u n g e r , l a c k i n g i n o p p o r t u n i t y , a n d l a n g u i s h i n g i n p o v e r t y a n d d e s p e r a t i o n . We encouraged one another i n fa i th and compan i onsh i p , a l l the t ime be l i e v i n g that tomorrow wou l d be a better day .

Then Zane came to my l i f e . We began v i s i t i n g the peop l e i n the town and we were struck w i th horror at the i r stor i e s of v i o l a t i on and abuse , a l l i n efforts to seek support and opportun i ty for the i r fam i l i e s .

We were determ i ned to do someth i ng that wou l d change the s i tuat i on . W i th hard l y a c lue as to what we were gett i ng i nto , we dove r i ght i n and broke ground on what wou l d soon become a po l ytechn ic schoo l for ch i l d ren i n the commun i ty and thus the very beg i nn i ng of CTC Internat i ona l ..Never once d i d I s i gn up for the th i ng s that we do today . Who wou l d have thought from my i n i t i a l meet i ng w i th Zane that one day we ' d be d i scuss i ng fash i on , hundreds of emp loyees , open i ng cafés , resource centers , and more? I t i s e x t r e m e l y g r a t i f y i n g t o s e e a l l t h e f a m i l i e s t h a t w a l k t o C T C e v e r y m o r n i n g w i t h j o y a n d p r i d e , k n o w i n g t h a t t h e y c a n f a c e t o m o r r o w w i t h a s s u r a n c e . Our Kenya team and the Ma la i ka Mums have seen qu i te a trans i t i on : mov i ng from segregat i on , broken re l at i onsh i p s , and desperat i on to acceptance , renewed conf i dence , and job secur i ty . Th i s i s the face of an empowered commun i ty .

It has been a great joy to remember a l l the fr i ends that I have met over these ten years . From the very f i r s t CTC team to now , we have l earned so much and we cont i nue to f i nd ourse l ve s i n sp i r ed and humb l ed by the peop l e of Maa i Mah i u . Th i s i s just the beg i nn i ng as we look ahead to the next ten years and beyond . Thank you to those who have rema i ned fa i thfu l from the start and a very warm we lcome to those who are just jo i n i n g i n the journey .
