President’s Report

With 2016 drawing to a close, it is perhaps appropriate to reflect on the events of the past year.

The highlight must of course be the 2016 CSSA National Specialty show. I would like to congratulate the hard working Alberta club which had the

courage to put together a true Sheltie Spectacular consisting of 4 specialty conformation shows, 2 obedience trials, and 3 rally trials over a period of three days. I know the show committee was on the premises from very early morning until very late at night - an exhausting venture. As a spectator it was obvious that things were well organized and for the most

part running smoothly. I am sure there were some “behind the scenes” glitches, but they were not evident to those of us who were not involved. KUDOS to all the hard workers for a very successful event.

2016 was also an election year for the CSSA. With interest in our sport and membership in our club dwindling, it has become more difficult to fill

positions on the executive, but having said that, we have some new executive members coming on board effective January 1st 2017. I would like to thank Sharon Ayers, who has stepped up to represent the entire maritime region, Kim Aston, who will take on Ontario East and Quebec as director, and to Peter Culumovic, who will become our new treasurer.

I would also like to express heartfelt thanks to those executive members who have dedicated their time to the executive but who are now stepping down: Cathie Kraemer, who has served as treasurer for many years and done such a fantastic job; Cathy Reid, who served as Newsletter Chair, Alberta Director, President, Past President and Vice President; Michael

Lynch, who served as Ontario East director for almost 10 years; and Karen Henley, who served as director for Nova Scotia since well before I came on the board.

It is also appropriate at this time to thank the dedicated board members who have stayed on in their existing positions. Their experience and

knowledge are a valuable resource to the club and will help to make the transition go smoothly.

Lastly, a reminder to those whose membership renewals remain undone - please try to get them in to the current treasurer Cathie Kraemer ( [email protected] ) before year end. With a change in treasurer

looming, it will simplify matters if most renewals are done prior to January 1st. E-transfer and PayPal available.

In closing, I hope everyone has a safe, happy and peaceful holiday season - see you next year!

Editor’s Report

Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe this is

the final issue for 2016. To the left you will see the

incoming executive, effective January 1 2017.

I would like to thank all the members who have

supported CSSA through their advertising in the

newsletter. It seems the response to the reduced costs

has been very positive!

On a personal note; I thoroughly enjoyed my few days

at the National in October. It was so nice to see old

friends, and make new ones! I saw some very lovely

and promising baby puppies - the future for Canadian

Shelties looks bright!

I am also grateful for the confidence the CSSA has

shown in me, in allowing me to continue to serve as

editor of the newsletter. I really enjoy seeing the hard

work produce pretty results.

I am now accepting reservations for the spring issue.

The front cover is reserved, but all other advertising

space is available. Pleas let me know if you are

interested.

At this most special time of year I would like to extend

wishes for a very safe and happy holiday season to all,

regardless of faith. Merry Christmas, Happy

Channuka… Blessed whatever the reason. May Peace

and Joy be with you and your families, wherever you

are.

See you in 2017!

Sherrie

Director’s Report - BC - Joanne Howe

Wow… here we are and another year has flown by. I would like to end the year by

congratulating everyone for all their successes this year. I know so many people that

have had success in the litter box, the show ring, and across all the performance events

that are offered. Shelties are such amazing dogs… each one is so individual in

personality, but all are intelligent, beautiful and eager to please. Could not imagine my

life without them. My experiences with training Harrison, my first herding dog, have taught me so much and as

we continue on our journey we learn valuable lessons every time we are out with the livestock.

Please go into the New Year with dreams of a happy, prosperous, successful 2017.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Judi Wass - Firestar

All boys (three) from the Jazz/Jian litter now are champions. This was the first litter for both the parents. Official

names are GCH. Firestar's Destiny at Startoga, RN,RI, CGN,(Cash) CH. Firestar's Gotta Be Me (Caleb), CH.

Firestar's Chances Are. (Cory) I do plan to breed Jazz (CH. Amberlyn's Jazz in the Night) again when she co-

operates by coming in season. I hope to send Cory out with Cindy Merkley in the spring (if the weather allows

me to send him by plane). Barb Merkley will also do some obedience training with him at her classes. We do not

have any classes offered here in our area unless I get organized myself so I will take advantage of the

opportunity with Barb and hopefully start training Caleb myself. That is all for now.

Judi

Director’s Report - Alberta - Norma Jeanne Pohl

Another year is fast drawing to a close and the Christmas season will soon be upon us .It has been a busy year for many Alberta members – with the high light, for many – being the CSSA National held in Camrose Alberta . I would personally like to commend the National committee of Edmonton for a job well done! I know it takes hours of preparation and planning , in order to have an event , such as the National ,

run smoothly! You all did an awesome job – Congratulations ! And ANOTHER CONGRATULATIONS to all of the exhibitors who took part in the Sheltie Extravaganza- in the various events! Whether you win an award or not – you were all part of a wonderful event( without you the event would not have been a success) – displaying our beautiful Shelties ! Lastly, my personal Congratulations , to all who were successful in taking home the “big wins”!-a beautiful display of some wonderful Shetland Sheepdogs ! It was wonderful to see many old friends .

Some news from around the province -

Carol Williams - Liska Shelties Our Edmonton Shetland Sheepdog Fanciers Club hosted 4 specialties following BRCA, including the Canadian National. This included three specialty Rally trials and two specialty obedience trials. Congratulations and thanks to all our hard working show committee members on a job WELL DONE!Decided to enter our old lady in Rally Intermediate at two of the specialties, and what the heck, might as well enter BRCA for two trials and go for the title. Morgan qualified at all four Rally trials to become Ch. Kimicko Love Child Bi Liska, CD, CGN, and new RI - at 12 1/2 years old - who says old dogs can't learn new tricks? Also entered Morgan with her nearly 10 year old son Dusty twice for Rally Brace and once for Obedience Brace. At their first Rally Brace trial they earned a perfect score! They also qualified at the National in Rally Brace for High in Class, and in Obedience Brace (the only entry). Dusty is Ch. Liska Star Gazer Bi Kimicko, CD, RA, CGN. Such a great experience to compete with our Veterans. They also competed in Veterans Obedience at the National and finished in 3rd and 4th place. At the Rally Triple Crown, Dusty won Hign in Class for Rally Novice+.

In conformation I only had an entry in Altered, and won two Altered points on Sparkle - Ch. Liska Mudels Wish Upon A Star (co-bred by Carol and Brenda Muddle).

Jeanne Bartosh - Sephora Shelties is happy to report Avonlea Poster Of A Girl almost 11 years old earned her first leg in Rally Intermediate. She then placed second in the Veteran’s Obedience class for a score of 194.5. We also placed second in Rally Brace with her granddaughter Sephora’s Shadow Of Her Smile RI. Belle, Sephora’s Shadow Of Her Smile earned her last leg in Rally Advanced. Belle’s littermate Serena placed first in the specialty with Mrs. Joyce Van Kirk and third in her class at the national. THANK YOU to everyone who came to these shows. I really enjoyed meeting the new people and reconnecting with friends. Keystone Shelties – our thanks to the 2016 National committee for hosting a great event in Camrose Alberta! We were honoured and thrilled that AmCh Paray’s Keystone Insatiable was awarded CSSA National Best of Winners by respected breeder judge Jo Ann Pavey. Kherington is well on her way to her Canadian championship! We’re looking forward to the future this beautiful girl has here in Canada. Andrea Knibbs - Connemara Shelties - Fae, Shadland Connemara Faerie Tale, was WB Friday at Lethbridge show, BW Sunday, for 4 points. Buzz, Ch. Connemara Sandstorm, had a good summer in agility, with AGNJ and NPS titles, in CKC, and his Starter Games title in AAC.

Alberta Report Continued…

Shadland Shelties - Joyce Woolridge

I am proud to announce Am Ch Can GCH Shadland Risky Business is Number One Sheltie in Canada, also placing in the Top Ten All-breed in Canada. It has been a exciting Campaign and beyond my Wildest Dreams. KUDOS to a brave little dog RISKY and his dedicated handler Terry Bernier (I am merely his humble owner/breeder!) In the New Year “ Risky” will try his talents at Agility and maybe as a Dad too.

At the 2016 CSSA National is was my pleasure to have Shadland Dark Chocolate awarded Winners Dog under respected judge Joanne Pavey. He has since finished his Can. Ch. and will take time off to prepare for the American Championship Challenges, along with kennel mate Can.Ch. Lynphil Incanto (9 American Pts) who was WD/BW at the ASSA 2016 National. They will represent us in a strong compliment of Sable Stud dogs. All are fully tested.

My guest Blue Merle boy Am.Ch. Mistybrook Sixth Sense is standing here for a limited time. I am waiting on a litter due by Boo out of Ch.Syringa Pearl Magnolias.

2016 has been an exciting year at Shadland! We wish everyone the best in 2017.

Norma Jeanne Pohl - Leith Shelties

I was very pleased with my two performance boys at the Sheltie Extravaganza- GCH. HIC Leith’s N’Sync at Prairiemist,RA and Ch. HIC Leith’s NCIS SpecialAgentGibbs ,RA- both achieving very nice qualifying scores in the events we entered. I was also very proud of my baby puppy- Leith Kelticshoman Prairiemist – his first time in the ring and doing very well, He had fun- in the ribbons every show entered!

Congratulations to McGee – Leith’s Junior Field Agent McGee– owned and loved by Robert and Brenda Skanes- received his Rally Novice title. At the Nationals , he acquired a score of 100. He also got one leg towards his CD.

Cheers ,

Norma Jeanne

Director’s Report - Saskatchewan - Donna Lewis

Hi everyone. Wow if this is Winter I’ll take it. I know though we are likely to have cold and snowy weather

just around the corner. Not too much going on in Saskatchewan at this time. I know there have been a few shows so I think I should have some brags to report for next issue.

I travelled to the National and Sheltie Extravaganza in Camrose Alberta in October, and had a great time! Nice facility, nice host hotel, and great people and Shelties. It was nice to meet people I only know on face book, and see the beautiful dogs in person I have only seen in pictures.

It was a treat to see the Silver that the Saskatoon And Area Shetland Sheepdog Association donated to the National for prizes. The committee had polished it up and it was stunning! Thanks to the 2016 National committee for a job well done!!

It was a nice National, only my third I have attended, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I encourage everyone to try to attend a National if you can; especially of it’s within driving distance. It’s worth the trip. I am already looking forward to

the 2018 National.

Just a bragging…

Donna Lewis- Donayne - We went to the National!! I entered Shenley, Ch. Donayne’s Blue Suede Shoes RN CNR CRA in Camrose at the Sheltie Extravaganza Regional Specialty and the National Specialty. Shenley just turned 9 in August, so was entered in the 9 + Veteran Female Class and in Novice Intermediate in the Rally O trial. She was Second in her

Veteran class at the Regional specialty in some tough competition, and had a qualifying round at the Regional Rally Trial. She was happy and we enjoyed our time in both rings.

Also, a little blue male Sheltie I co bred, Borealis Donayne Jack Frost, was the star of the weekend. “Keaton” is co bred with Judith Hutton of Borealis Shelties, and is co-owned by Judith and Joyce Baker (his trainer) of Joybak Collies and Shelties. Keaton came home with two qualifying scores from the Sheltie Extravaganza Rally O trials, a Qualifier at the

Regional Trial and a High In Class with a Perfect score of 100 at the National Rally O trial. We are very proud of this team and look forward to being part of his future endeavors. Keaton is Shenley’s grandson, and they both had a great time travelling to the shows together.

That’s it for now. Have a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years.

Help Needed!

If any of the owners/breeders have a CKC Championship certificate they can scan or send photo of to Bob Miller ([email protected]) or Cathie Kraemer ([email protected]) , that would be appreciated. There is a possibility that dogs were foreign born and thus the points were lost if ERN or registration was not done in time, or CKC simply missed publishing them.

Our next step will be to contact CKC for a search but that would involve a fee. We are hoping this will help us.

Director’s Report - Manitoba/Ontario North - Elaine Inkster

Congratulations to all the beautiful shelties at the CSSA National held in Camrose,

Alberta in October 2016.Thank you to Alberta for hosting the National. A good time was had by all!

The Pet Show was held at the RBC Convention in Winnipeg, Manitoba in October 2016. CSSA members and friends manned our CSSA Manitoba booth. We had wonderful

sheltie ambassadors They were Finnegan and McKai with Barb Bell, Etch with Angel Stoyko, Cody with Tish Mitchell and Lexie with Elaine Inkster. Jean Paterson also worked at the booth. Several other CSSA members helped out behind the scenes.

Barb Bell - I am very proud of my boys. At the Wheat City show in Brandon, MB OTCH Dyniques Our Little Guy McKai RA CGN (McKai) earned his Rally Advanced title and Skyehaven After Midnight CDX RI CGN (Finnegan) earned his Rally Intermediate title.

Dyniques Shelties Marilyn O’Donnell

Dyniques SHELTIES is pleased to announce that we currently have a wonderful litter of seven sable puppies. They were born on November 8 and we have one female and six males. Sire is the fabulous Ch. Laureate Macadamia and the dam is Ch. Cassbars Carnival Toffee. Inquires invited.

We are very excited to share that BPIG Ch. Dyniques Tell Me More will become a father around December 7th. Mom is Ch. Prairemist Guilty Pleasure. We can hardly wait to see the quality of Teller's first litter!

We sent two of our girls with Michelle Rogowski to the CSSA National Sheltie Specialty in October. Under respected judge Joanne Pavey, Dyniques Shades of Blue was second in her class and Royal Hills Alex Marie (8 American points) was third in her Open Blue class. Thank you, Michelle, for doing a great job of handling them.

Huge congratulations go to Michelle Rogowski on winning Best of Winners and Best Puppy in Specialty Show at the CSSA National with Ch. Cassbars Between Friends (Phoebe) who is the litter sister to Dyniques Shades of Blue (Izzy). Congrats on Phoebe's BPIS too! Watch for these two sisters at shows next year.

Carlaines Shelties Elaine and Carter Inkster

We are very proud of “Lexie” aka Amberlyn’s Winter Lady. At the Wheat City Show held in Brandon in November she earned Best of Winners on her first birthday. It is hard to believe she is not a puppy anymore.
