  • Similarly in November, 2011 a one day symposium was conducted in Mumbai on “Recent Trends, Challenges and Solutions in Bioanalysis “. Selected experts gave authoritative talks on the areas of their expertise and almost 100 chemists and students engaged in the Bioanalysis attended and benefitted from this program. On this occasion, Professor ( Dr) R.T.Sane, one of the pioneers in the area of Bioanalysis was bestowed with a Lifetime Contribution award.

In November, 2012, CSI in collaboration with Chemistry Group, BARC held a two-day symposium on “Evolution of Gas Chromatography in India-Past, Present and Future” in Mumbai, which was attended by more than 250 scientists and students from all over India. On this occasion Dr. R. M. Iyer, Former Director of Chemistry Group, BARC, who did a pioneering research on developing an indigenous GC for the first time in India and helped to transfer the technology to Toshniwal company for local manufacturing was felicitated with a “Lifetime Contribution Award”. Dr. Iyer, who is in his late seventies recollected the difficulties his group encountered in those days in building up the GC instrument and appreciated the gesture from Chromatographic Society of India in recognizing his efforts. Several individuals and companies in India, who have made significant contributions in the area of manufacturing of GC instruments and accessories, were also honored on this occasion.

This year in June, a one day symposium on “Ion Chromatography” was conducted in IIT-Bombay. Powai. This was a unique program, where seven lectures on the technique and industrial applications of Ion Chromatography were presented by leading speakers from the academia and industry. The highlight of the day was honoring of Professor ( Dr) S.M. Khopkar, Emeritus Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT-Bombay with a “Lifetime Contribution Award”. Dr. Khopkar, in his early eighties, who is one of the pioneers in ion exchange chromatography, was delighted to receive this recognition from Chromatographic Society of India.

Over the past few years, the educational seminars and workshops conducted by Chromatographic Society of India have become very popular and are well attended. To mention a few, a Two-day workshop was conducted in Ruia College, Mumbai, Al Ameen College in Bangalore and Pharmacy College in Ananthpur, Andhra Pradesh. Following a successful two day GC/GCMS workshop in Mumbai in 2011, a two-day workshop in GCMS and LCMS was conducted in Hyderabad in March, 2013 with the help of Pharmacy College under Bharath Institute of Technology ( BIT) and IICT, which was attended by almost 100 post graduate students from several colleges and institutes. A two day workshop for the introduction to chromatography for undergraduate students was conducted at the SIES College, Sion, Mumbai, in 2012 and recently CSI collaborated with SIES and conducted a one day workshop on Bioanalysis in collaboration with Therapuetic Drug Monitoring Laboratory ( TDML) .

The success of these, seminars, symposia and workshops is of immense encouragement to CSI; therefore, CSI is planning to work with interested colleges and universities in India to replicate these courses in their premises. CSI has also deputed its member speakers for a few seminars and it is realized that there is a tremendous need for the education of theories of various types of chromatography and mass spectrometry among the graduate and postgraduate students. CSI is definitely and seriously working towards achieving this goal and is keen to develop an active honorary faculty, who are willing to travel and teach in various colleges and universities. Those interested to volunteer are requested to contact CSI. CSI considers its website www.chromsocindia. org as a major source for information sharing and presently all the publications that are brought out at the various occasions are posted at this website and also there is a link to the publication from UK, “Chromatography Today”. The website also contains information about the various suppliers in India for Chromatographic instruments, accessories and consumables. The suppliers are encouraged to become the “Corporate Members” of CSI and take advantage of their company profiles and products being displayed on the website for the benefit of those customers, who are looking for such information. CSI is also planning to update the website with information as to how to select the chromatography instruments for their laboratory and tips on how to trouble shoot and maintain them.

As we move forward, CSI is interested to strengthen its ties with Chromatographic Society of UK and work jointly to bring some unique teaching programs and seminars in India. There is a tremendous scope for activities in various industrial applications of chromatography and mass spectrometry and this is the time that sharing information of what is going on in the rest of the world is also brought to the attention of scientists and chemists in India. In this regard, CSI is also stretching its hands to our own leading scientists in Europe, United States and Far East to become the Life Members of CSI and contribute to the education of chromatography in India with their articles and also give seminars during their visits to India. CSI would like to be the bridge in helping in the transfer of knowledge from the Indian Scientists settled abroad to the chemists and students in India. This will be considered as a grand gesture from Indian scientists settled abroad to their home country.

Undoubtedly chromatography is a like an axle that traverses through every chemical industry and it touches our life every minute , be it in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the automobiles we drive, the medicines we consume, etc. Chromatography techniques are here to stay and the faster one is able to understand this science and practice it, there will be many opportunities that will knock at the door in building a strong career in academics and industry. CSI solicits whatever help it can get from scientists, teachers and students from all over India and abroad.
