Requirements for cross-section measurements

Requirements for using activation method of measurement:

- high energy neutron source with good intensity

- (quasi)monoenergetic neutrons with well known spectrum

- pure monoisotopic samples

- good spectroscopic equipment: and X-rays detectors

- knowledge about the corrections on beam fluctuation, self-absorption, non-point like emitters…

Studied (mono)isotopic materials:

In all irradiations: Al, Au, Bi, I, In, Ta

In some irradiations: Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni, Y, Zn

- also possible to use MCNPX to calculate neutron spectra, but:

Both aproaches have its problems… => It is neccesary to study the neutron sources further!!

- uncertainty in spectra determination 10%- uncertainty in neutron intensity 5-10%

• cross-section comparisons between EXFOR and TALYS – mostly good agreement

• We believe the simulated s shape is OK, only the absolute value can be shifted

•Following the neutron spectrum knowledge, we calculated ratio between production in neutron peak and total production

• With this ratio we multiplied the yields to subtract background production

Yttrium cross-section measurement

Reaction (n,3n) - production of isomeric and ground state of 87Y

Up to now very scare data about cross-sections

Methodical measurement – neutron energy 32.5 MeV, May 2011, to prepare systematic study of yttrium reactions by means of the NPI neutron source

No data about cross-sections of isomeric state production

Special conditions of measurement:- long irradiation - intensive beam - only limited number of samples – a lot of measurement time for one sample

Main aim - to study time evolution of yttrium isomers

Page 21: Cross-section measurements of neutron threshold reactions using activation methodojs.ujf.cas.cz/~wagner/transmutace/erinda/presentations... · 2012. 6. 22. · Higher threshold near

21

Production of two states of 87Y during irradiationStable beam intensity is assumed during whole irradiation – it is more or less true for NPI cyclotron irradiations.Unstable beam – correction on beam variations during irradiation.

Summary• measured some 39 reactions, 12 different energies, some of the reactions measured for the first time

• measured also isomers (Y, In, Au)

• problems with background subtraction – solved by using the Talys code

• studies of all (minor) uncertainty sources under progress

• main uncertainty comes from determination of beam intensity and neutron spectrum – need for further studies/developement/measurements of neutron sources

• cross-section studies are the subject of Jitka Vrzalová PhD work
