B✿✿ BALINESE

60” wide Italian cotton lawn with an all over print some of it abstract, others pretending to be floral. All over the effect is abstract. It’s in purple, black, white, deep pink and pale mauve. The overall effect is of a broad stripe into which there is many varied shapes in the colours I’ve just described. If you were to get a sample it wouldn’t quite give you the impression, so perhaps there will be a photograph somewhere to give you a better idea. Beautiful cloth, pity you let someone put this print on it did I hear you say? That would be unkind, but certainly the brief of the designer to make you notice.


✿✿ BAA BAA WHITE SHEEPLight cream 73% wool, 25% nylon 2% elastane knitted jersey. Not a jersey as in a cotton jersey but a fairly open knit sort of thing you might make a shawl out of, or a hat and scarf to match; that sort of thing. It’s a soft and scrumbly sort of fabric with a gorgeous hand. (Picture on front cover)

A bit of a do...

Having watched recent re-runs of the program baring that

name and the shambles that it all became, it does remind you

what life is really like. History tells us that it has always been the

same and therefore always will be. Things do change of course,

but people don’t seem to. Cloth however while still being made

to adorn us, is pretty much made as it always was but these

days a bit faster. I’m here to talk about stock that is new to us

and of sufficient variety, I hope to keep you interested. I had to

go to Portugal recently to play golf as I have done for the last

umpteen years with basically the same people, so why do we

have to go to Portugal? Well because its winter time, and while

its winter there it’s not like winter here. Sadly however I don’t

come back refreshed, I come back on the far side of shattered.

There you go, you see I’m moaning about an experience that

was wonderful so I say things don’t change. So here

we are with cloth in abundance, so let’s make a start.

✿✿ BEAUTIFUL BLACK SUITINGSA DARK SECRET The secret in this case is that as we speak I am not entirely certain what this cloth is made from some wool but at this juncture this is unfamiliar to the story. So I have got to tell you about it anyway and maybe by the time it goes to price I will have established exactly what the makeup of the cloth is, it’s black, it has a dull satin finish, scruples fairly well in the hand but not entirely crease free by any stretch of the imagination, probably a 7oz weight in old money, which makes it slightly heavier than the Chino, it is a gorgeous soft hand. Caroline tells me it is Poly/Viscose/Lycra 47/47/6 which for some it’s a bonus for others it’s not, but how good must it be? Superb Cloth!


MAYPOLE 60” wide fairly heavy, very drapey, polyester crepe, not a cheap and nasty crepe, it’s a very expensive one, beautifully made and really will make up well.

56” wide viscose lycra jersey in cream with a large paisley design in cerise, black, taupe and beige. In addition to the paisley swirl there is also some floral work in the rest of the pattern, quite dazzling.


✿✿ BI - STRETCH CHECKThey have a ½ inch square windowpane check formed in a double chain stitch line in black. A good old fashioned cloth, no doubt about that, but with a good width and its easy care. The weight is suitable for dresses for all ages, from tots to who knows where. ✿✿ BLACK TRACKLightweight cotton track suiting in black. Nuff said, superb quality.


✿✿ B. P. R.56” wide polyester Ponte Roma in dark grey and black, the black bit is floral which is on a fine lattice in grey. Not too heavy but very pleasant and made in 97% polyester, 3% Lycra. It’s a good easy wear, easy care cloth.

✿✿ BRITISH WOOL CLOTH b) Genuine Article - tropical weight, fine grey wool worsted suiting is the genuine article, soft as a babies bottom, nearly as beautiful, and fabulous to wear. c) Melange - superfine wool suiting, this time in a mélange of grey, black, a bit of mustard, and a bit of beige, yarns. In a not too bold tramline check upon which is then woven a very faint over check in a very dark purple/damson colour. Another cloth with a fabulous hand. e) Lamb - wide, grey, pure new wool suiting / lightweight coating. It is not a plain flat grey, there is a suggestion of other tones in it. It is in a sort of flattened lambs wool weave if you will, with an ever so slightly polished finish. Exquisite.

✿✿ CHEESECLOTH100% Cotton Cheese Cloth, pretty rare these days in that most of it is, and probably this is made in India where there is a need for long garments with plenty of cloth in them that they can wrap around, wash easily and don’t need to iron. We have two. a) Alhambra - The first one is in an off-white bluey sort of background with a navy blue and dark turquois abstract kind of floral design which has no definite repeat to it, it’s just all the same and therefore an all over pattern. b) Mosaic - Number two is a dark cream cloth with a brown, purple, dark red and pink all over quite large abstract design, this will have 26” repeat. So place you’re money and take your chances as two which one you prefer, always been a green person myself so they wouldn’t suit. Indecently, talking of green, today I am in green, I didn’t realise; I’ve got green trousers and a green jumper on. Oh I hear someone in the background saying that’s what I always wear. c) White - For some reason we have very little of this.

✿✿ CLOTH FOR ALL SEASONSWe are very pleased to announce that we have had a shipment of some delicious German cotton trouserings. Wonderful cloths made for some of the best leisure wear trousering people on earth, cotton they come in variety of different weaves, colours and textures as follows: a) Grino – A lightweight dark grey chino with a tiny herringbone detail in the weave b) Burgundy Soft – Gorgeously soft chino with a light sanded finish, soft as a baby’s bottom. c) Khaki Twill – a medium weight twill with a sanded finish d) Olive Twill – a medium weight twill with a sanded finish e) Stone - Pale stone also with a sanded finish. f) Very Dark Grey Bedford Cord - A dark grey bedford cord with the cord running horizontally, doesn’t make any difference to anything it just runs horizontally it’s just I’ve used cloths t’other way round, this is a tad heavier than the rest and is quite splendid.


✿✿ COMFORT CLOTH56” wide reasonably heavy Ponte Roma double jersey with the addition of a fine boucle in the knit. It’s in black, it’s soft, gorgeous to handle and beautiful to wear. There’s not a lot of it, unless there’s some I don’t know about. It’s not for me, get a pair of nice fitting trousers or a jacket, I can see not me in that, but you.

✿✿ CORTINAIn the hills in parts of the Dolomites they have a breed of sheep whose name escapes me but this cloth is a very fine merino with a hint of alpaca jersey. As fine as any cotton jersey you’ll get so what was the point of making it out of wool? Whatever the reason it is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully fine and soft. And once again might be suitable for wraps and things but of course you can make t-shirts and things from it. Made in Italy. (Picture on front cover)

✿✿ CORDUROYSFUSTIAN - GOLDENSAND Not as fine as a needlecord corduroy and not as thick as corduroy. I don’t think that anybody makes fustians these days but there was a mill about 20 miles away who probably made the finest fustians ever, perhaps they still do, I should find out. This is of that ilk, beautiful golden sandy colour, 12 whale needlecord not as fine as the other needlecords we have had in the past, this has a lot of meat in it, i.e. an awful lot of yarn in this cloth.

D✿✿ DAISY CHAIN

Poly/cotton with a tiny little solid daisy like flower joined by swirls of single strand embroidery, obviously on the white its white and on the cream its cream, it’s very pretty and just a little bit different from our usual broderie anglaise. Often the embroidery in broderie Anglaise is shiny, in this the embroidery is matt. This is an expensive looking cloth. a) White b) Cream


✿✿ DE-NIMMedium weight stretch denim in a good navy blue. Perhaps it is a little bit obtuse to assume that we all know that the origin of denim was French, made in Nimes in fact, so denim is the cloth of Nimes, I am sure I have been through all that before and perhaps it sounds a little pompous but what’O. This is a new denim to us, it is a beautiful fabric wonderful for anything that you don’t need to drape


✿✿ DOUBLE DEECotton, cheesecloth. Extremely fine featherweight in a dark olive green.Something loose on top of something not loose is the suggestion for use.


✿✿ DOUBLE DIVAI stood staring at this cloth for several minutes and thought that’s not right and only when I get to measuring the width and tugging at it do I find that it has been finished in such a way that it has two borders about 12ins or 25cms wide and in the middle between these two borders is a very stretchy almost pleated finish. This could be an experiment that’s gone wrong or it’s a clever and difficult thing to achieve. It is polyester chiffon in black with an absolute riot of colourful small flowers in an all over print. I am just trying to imagine the stretch bodice with loose floppy sleeves, a la flamenco dance dresses. Do you understand? If you don’t, try harder.


E✿✿ EMBROIDERED LAWN

You may not think we are spoiling but we are, you may find this cheaper elsewhere but I doubt it. Beautiful white embroidered cotton lawn.

✿✿ EMMACotton lawn in cream, with a very faint woven stripe at ½ inch intervals on top of which is printed a delightful tiny floral spray design in autumn rusts, aqua and green. It reminds me of a scene in a film where there is a field full of flowers with a girl sitting amongst the flowers in her floral dress which blends into the field. A good find. This is the same fabric we had called ‘Howard’s End’ except that it has an aqua flower.


✿✿ EXPRESSOTwo wool cloths of an almost identical colour one knitted, one woven and both dark brown. a) Crepe - Firstly the woven cloth is a 97% wool, 3% elastane suiting, 60” wide and is a fine great weave.

b) Knit - Secondly the knitted cloth is 48” wide and is made of mostly wool with a little bit of nylon and Lycra in it. Perhaps you would make a coat or jacket of one and a bit of a wrap out of the other. There’s only an eyeful of both, so it’s a pot luck job, whoever comes first gets it but it’s worth having.

F✿✿ FINE AND INTERESTING

This is really a very pretty viscose jersey in a pale marl grey. You can’t really go wrong with a marl grey but if you are a bit bored of grey and marl, this might just interest you because of the bubble like weave in the fabric. Not an easy one for me to explain so please look at the picture. It is fine and delicate, an interesting fabric which drapes well and I think will make super tops.


✿✿ FINEST LAWN SHIRTINGA selection of superfine cotton lawn shirting fabrics from Paul Smith. a) Carleson - There are so many colours in the weave, this must go with almost everything. This is quite unlike most of our cotton poplins as most tend to be smaller in scale, this is a fabulous bold print on a beautiful quality cotton in blacks, browns, blues and cream.

✿✿ GREY SUITING - WOOL/CASHMERE FLANNEL SUITINGA 60” (152 cm) wide, beautifully soft silvery grey wool cashmere mix flannel fabric, 65% wool/10% cashmere/20% viscose/ 5% nylon. This is the very last of about 500m we had and has been used for suits, cushions and upholstery. A much loved fabric.


✿✿ GRRRRR Heavy woven 97% cotton, 3% elastane, superb dress fabric with an all over print that might look a bit like a tiger with dappled light shining upon it in the early evening. You think I’ve read that in a book don’t you? Nope. I’ve just made it up. Not an ordinary animal print by any stretch of the imagination. Fascinating.

Paul Smith - Wonderful 60” wide shirting cloth with a soft brushed finish, this is a beautiful cotton Viyella type check cloth, variety in the weave as well as the colours Fine fabulous cotton check shirting from a long gone famous mill.


✿✿ HATHAWAY REVISITED58” wide cotton shirting in light cream with a fine herringbone weave.


✿✿ HEARTSExactly as the fabric above; 58” wide cotton shirting in light cream except there is a very subtle heart print on it in cream. The print is so subtle I can’t get a picture of it; the hearts are about 1cm and join up an all sides so the overall effect is very pretty.

I✿✿ IF I LOVED YOU

60” wide white cotton jersey with an all over “geisha” print in royal blue, beautiful cloth. A bobbydazzler to look at, I could wear this but my golfing friends would accuse me of trying to outdo John Daily.


✿✿ IMPASSEThis is a 160cm wide polyester acetate jacquard cloth which I seem to recollect a similar cloth being in jackets. It’s quite lightweight, but despite that I’m sure it’s for an over garment of some kind rather than a dress or trousers. It’s made from many different colour yarns which catch the light differently from different angles. But overall it is a melange of blue, grey, green, pink and a touch of gold perhaps. A wonderful array of colours making this luminescent fabric come to life and indeed the further you get away from it the more detail within the pattern and within those colours comes alive. Also within this design is a floral pattern bit of a random scattering, nothing too delicate or to over the top for that matter. These become hues of the colours I’ve mentioned. It’s better from afar than close to. If you can mostly understand that, you’re a better man than I am, but get some to make a jacket. It will be much admired.


✿✿ IMPEACHEDLightweight 100% cotton twill trousering, it has a peached or slightly sanded finish a good cloth, a very good cloth. It is lovely and soft and is perfect for making little girls pinafores or even dungarees for a child, a summer pair of trousers or skirt. a) Blue b) Pink


✿✿ IN BOUCLÉ60’’ Wide acrylic, cotton and polyester mix bouclé tweed which is made up of red, pinks, black, brown and beige. But overall the feeling is pink. A good weight which would make up into a lovely jacket or skirt.

J✿✿ JACQUARD JERSEY

This is a fine but densely woven pink jersey fabric. It is not plain, as the Jacquard weave has a small heart every cm. I hope you can see this in the picture. Extremely pretty. Great for making nightwear and indeed all sorts of garments.


✿✿ JOSEPHThis 56” wide inordinately expensive knitted wool/viscose/cotton/cashmere cloth has a definite Inca influence in that it looks vaguely Peruvian and favours the sort of capes that they wear in the Andes. Not that I’ve been, but I have seen pictures and if they didn’t make capes they made hats. Extremely intricate in its makeup it has lots of colours and mixes but primarily a) Technicolour is more lighter than the other with oranges, pinks, blues, greens, gold, turquois, mauve and black with an overstitching in white sort of to hold it all together. Now I think you’ll probably up to make a muffler out of it or a delightful bobble hat because you can’t afford anything else I suppose. b) Dreamcoat is as I say darker. It has greys, black, there’s still pink and blue, turquois, lemon, pale green. But the way they’ve been knitted it really is glorious. Treat yourself but don’t buy too much as we really don’t have a lot. Made for Missoni. Halian cloth. (Picture on front cover)

Black, cotton, rib knit jersey. Ideal for ill-fitting garments or sloppy as some people say. Good cloth, good weight, a fairly fine rib but not too fine.

I don’t think the designs are suitable for a day at a winter race meeting, but certainly Ascot, Derby and on a particular fine Grand National, frocks made from these beautiful crepe-de-shine fabrics may be just the ticket, I know the emphasis these days is on what or how outrageous a hat you can wear which perhaps detracts somewhat from the rest of the clothing that the ladies wear, but I’m not sure they would detract in this sense this is pretty much the sort of thing you might find a lagoon of flowers floating on water with a big design with a very arty outline floral design, on a multi-coloured cloth in pale pastel tones of green, lilac, white with the addition of darker greens, purples and turquoise outlining some of the flowers, beautifully done.

It is very substantial, absolutely not see through and virtually creaseless, very soft, difficult to make and a hell of a cloth to wear. An extra-ordinary Italian cloth made for Prada.


✿✿ MILLIE MINCENT – PEACHThis pretty floral design is named after my little girls doll, which happened to be mine. By the way, I didn’t name her this but when my mum gave it to her she immediately called her Millie Mincent. The fabric that her clothes are made from is very similar to this and I think it is very pretty and timeless. The colours are delightful.

It has far more to it than just the basic colours that I’ve described there are all sorts of intonations within the weave where the colours come together to give this cloth lovely, heathery texture. The six of the plaid check is absolutely bob on for the design and the colours not that I’m prone to exaggerations, but I absolutely adore this cloth and I do know a lot of golfer who with give their high teeth for a pair of trousers made out of this.


✿✿ MONTALBANOI was searching there for something simple as a title, and the name of this Italian detective reminded me of his simple approach to problem solving. It is a Cotton jersey, of some substance, with a rib that runs across the cloth and not down in a deep pink with a simple child like floral stamp design in other pinks, yellow, turquoise and a hint of lime green. A soft but tough cotton fabric.

✿✿ OXFORDThis is an early example of what people were trying to do to save cotton by adding a little bit of synthetic, in this case this is a 74% cotton/26% polyester procured, pre-shrunk, traditional oxford shirting, as the aforementioned processing would suggest it is a very well finished cloth with a lovely hand and quite was made for a very famous shirt maker, who sadly is no longer, well no longer making in this country anyway, so it’s a bit long in the tooth but none the worse for that, it was made in Lancashire in one its finest mills.

60” wide red melton jacketing make from 100% polyester good enough to make you doubt your judgment. Beautifully soft and hardwearing, for making coats jackets and warm skirts. For a nice skirt pattern try butterick 3134


✿✿ R.E.M.60” wide cotton shirting, not quite as fine as a superfine poplin, but fine nevertheless. These yarns are slightly thicker so there’s fewer of them, but it’s still quite fine but tiny little bit open. It comes in a navy blue and off white pinhead check with a beautifully soft hand. Something in this will not date. I don’t mean you won’t get a date, what I mean is you will always look good.


S✿✿ SANDS OF THE IWO JIMA

60” wide, 70% linen, 30% cotton. “Denim” fabric in shades of sand of brown and white yarn. It doesn’t have a very soft hand and just a slight sheen to the surface which is created by having so much linen in it. That being the case, of course it will crease somewhat, so you need a good iron. But a lovely cloth to own. Do you keep cloths just so you can own them? It’s a great cloth and would go with a lot of stuff.


✿✿ SHADOWSThese two 60” wide poly viscose jersey cloths are a bit like a midsummer murders mystery where people have a penchant for appearing out of the shadows of the woods to either do someone in or find someone that has already been done in, in the wrong way. They are a sort of camouflage these two cloths. The first one; a) Red - is in grey, black, red with a tiny hint of beige and cream thrown in for good measure. In a floral all over design. b) Grey - Number 2 is very similar, although not identical. This time it’s in grey, black, a hint of mauve, beige and a tiny little bit of white. To say that the colours and muted and understated is to understate the case, but they are rather nice. And if you’re unsteady of hand, they won’t show spills which as we progress along life’s path, becomes increasingly important.

I need to go further than that, the background is damson, with navy and grey interference as it were laid upon which is what appears to be a quite separate article in navy twigs which are slightly raised from the main body of the cloth. It’s not too heavy, but looks warm and a thing of purpose, if you had an Airedale terrier he would get lost in this.

✿✿ SUMMER SUITINGThree British 60” wide all wool, lightweight summer suiting. a) Sandy Basketweave - in a pale sand colour made up of slightly different coloured yarns in a basket weave. b) Blue Hopsack - Number two is pale blue, once again made up of more than one shade of pale blue yarn and more of a hopsack weave, but they are very similar. c) Clerical Grey - Actually I’ve just found a third but as it’s a clerical grey it’s hardly like I described, a summer-like cloth, but it is the same weight as the others and almost the same weave. ✿✿ SUN-PANA 60” wide absolutely wonderful cotton gabardine, made in Japan, not recently I bet because this is a cloth of exceptional quality you don’t really see these days, it comes in a good shade of cream/stone and despite the volumes of yarn that it has in it it is still quite a light summer trousering cloth.


T✿✿ TENNESSEE

Polyester, heavy ‘organza’, a very slinky, sensual cloth, not for the retiring type. It comes in a light shade of mink.


✿✿ TROPICAL (Picture on back cover)

60” wide viscose spandex jersey. In an all over exotic floral and palms pronged design. Suitable for, well perhaps you wouldn’t wear it on a Hawaiian holiday because they’d think you was daft. You would wear it having been on one, people still might think you’re daft but that’s not the point. The point is a beautiful cloth, wherever you happen to be. Lots of vibrant colours; reds, greens, blues, purple, mauve, turquois with a little bit of light beige and white thrown in for good measure.


✿✿ TWO MINDS54in. wide cotton lawn which was white and has then been printed upon so there is still some white showing but for the rest, it is a ‘designer’ print. I say that because I am unsure of their mental capabilities on the day that they did it. The over all effect is quite stunning but they have run amok with red and yellow ink. It is an abstract all over print with bands of an even dizzier print running down the cloth. Basically it’s a print in four separate bands two dense and two not so dense. I think this is well suited to long frocks. Lovely cloth I reserve judgment on the design.


✿✿ TWO STEPThis is exactly that, made for the military, police uniform fabric. Made in Britain, this is a navy wool with polyester and nylon cavalry twill fabric. This is a bargain. Superb jacketing fabric. Navy wool cavalry twill fabric.


U✿✿ UNDERSKIRT

This does exactly what it says on the tin. 100% Polyester underskirt fabric. We have it in a) Grey b) White


✿✿ UTILITYThis is slightly different to the one we had in our last catalogue but equally good, this is a polyester suiting in a lightly marled dark grey, beautifully made utility cloth.

The background is off white and the yarns to make up the check are in mauve, possibly a little bit of pink and taupe so the overall effect is for a cloth that has a print rather than rather than a white cloth with a check on it. A supreme example of the weaver’s art.

This is a 60” wide polyester Lycra dress fabric with a fair amount of body but it should drape beautifully. It has an all over exploding firework pattern if you will, they are actually flowers but they sort of zoom at you from the back cloth in all manner of different colours. The background colour is a beautiful shade of dark blue with a hint, just a hint of purple and the flowers are in orange, turquoise, white and cerise with all sorts of shades and tones of those colours thrown in. It’s rather gorgeous. It still has quite a lot of background showing but the overall effect is one of explosive colour. My youngest grandson ‘no like fireworks. Too Loud.’
