As Mr. Dattalo has so eloquently stated in recent LGNA Crime Reports, your neighborhood is on a “good streak” as it relates to the numbers of crimes impacting you all. His terrific analysis, among other notes, highlights the reduction in burglaries and burglary of motor vehicles. Those two crime categories are very different, and thus, so too are the prevention techniques.

This time of year provides a favorable time to focus on burglaries. Since the yearly “fall back” time change has occurred, it is time for the also yearly (some would say obnoxious) reminder about the use of window coverings. We get used to daylight well into the evening for so much of the year, that it becomes habit to leave curtains and blinds open.

Have you ever noticed, while taking a walk or driving home, the big screen TV in your neighbor’s house? Mounted on the wall? Perhaps even the computer on the table? If you ever venture down your alley, what can you see through your neighbor’s back windows? If you can see valued items of your neighbors and your friendly neighbors are able to note what you have and where it is located, so too can any burglar.

The contrast from the dark outside to the light from TVs, monitors, table lamps, etc. inside is stark. Thieves also “blend in” more at 6:00pm, their canvassing of the neighborhood not nearly as suspicious. Use of window coverings reduces the inadvertent “advertising” of your property.

In the same light (no pun intended, well maybe) are the adjustments to any outdoor lighting. Whether on a timer or manual activation, turning on exterior light earlier is better. Porch and perimeter lights are major deterrents to criminals. Summer habits are tough to break, but remember that criminals look for opportunities provided to them. Changing habits limits those opportunities.

Holiday travel is a wonderful endeavor. Posting details on social media, not so much. Remember to use the appropriate privacy settings available from your social media provider. If you “tweet,”

CRIME WATCH UPDATE

TIPS ON AVOIDING A ROBBERY

DARREN DATTALO, CRIME WATCH COORDINATOR

Those of you on my email list know that robberies in the area have been on the rise over the last year or so. This is not unique to our area; they’ve been on the rise all over Dallas. Many of these robberies are of retail establishments, but

robberies of individuals are also becoming more common. Most have occurred either in parking lots or while walking along the street. Here are a few tips for avoiding a robbery:

1. Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re texting, reading or talking on the phone, you are not aware of your surroundings. None of us multitask as good as we think we do.

2. Try to walk with others and in well-lit areas when possible.

3. Don’t display electronics. This is a target. Since you aren’t using it anyway (#1) why not keep it out of sight?

4. Install tracking apps on any electronic devices if possible.

5. Only use ATMs in well-lit and well-populated areas, during the day if possible.

KEITH ALLEN—DALLAS POLICEMAINTAINING MOMENTUM

For the second year in a row, neighbors on the 5700 block of Morningside Avenue will transform their street to be “Candy Cane Lane.” If you ventured to this block in 2014, you would have enjoyed a street adorned with matching candy canes, colorful lights and Candy Cane Lane signs along the path.

Over the course of the past year, many Morningside neighbors have made plans to expand beyond the one

TIS THE SEASON FOR A LOWER GREENVILLE HOLIDAY

A NEW POOL FOR TIETZEOn October 8 the Dallas Park Board unanimously approved the new Master Aquatics Plan which includes Tietze. More than 50 “Tietze-ians” attended the Public Meeting at Samuell Grand Rec Center. Lisa Marshall, president of the Friends of Tietze Park Foundation says “Thank you for your spirit and support! Your physical presence at that meeting made a big impression that supported Paul Sims’ (District 14’s Park Board Rep) hard work to have Tietze included in the plan.”

Sims feels strongly that neighborhood input will best tailor the pool area to the needs and uses of our community and maintain continued support. He is also sensitive to the blending of new and old. “The historical integrity of the park must be respected and maintained. This is a legacy project that will hopefully last 40 to 50 years, and I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that the facility will define the park for generations to come. We have to get it right.”

The Park Board must first select designers and contractors. Lisa Marshall anticipates at least a year for design and promises to pass along information as it’s received. She says that there’s no way to know the timetable now. There will be at least one neighborhood meeting to show and explain the plan once the design is ready so the Aquatics Department can get feedback.

THE QUIET CHURCH

Jeremiah Meadows, Pastor of Skillman Bible Church located at the corner of Skillman and Richmond, recently reached out to introduce his church to the LGNA neighborhood. This year the church participated in National Night Out, and neighbors were happy to visit with it and the other churches represented. Pastor Meadows introduces his church as follows:

Hello, neighbors! My name is Jeremiah Meadows, and I have the privilege of serving as the Pastor of Skillman Bible Church, right here in the Lower Greenville neighborhood. We enjoy being part of such a great community and long to get to know each and every one of you, our neighbors. We gather each Sunday from 10:00 to 11:15a.m. to celebrate Jesus, and then we have Bible communities for kids and adults of all ages from 11:30a.m. to 12:15p.m.

On Sunday evenings from 4:30 to6:00, we have two different Gospel Communities that meet off campus in homes throughout the area to eat together, build relationships, encourage one another, and serve our community.

Here are some exciting things we have coming up at Skillman:

Sunday, November 22 at 11:30a.m. – Thanksgiving Bar-B-Q Potluck

Sundays, November 29-December 20 from 10:00-11:15a.m. – Celebration of Advent

We would be honored to have you join us. You’re invited anytime! Visit www.SkillmanBibleChurch.com to find out more about our church. If we can ever serve you or your family, please let us know. NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALKS Thanks to the efforts of neighborhood resident Zach Simmons, the city is installing prominent pedestrian-crossing signs on Greenville at the intersections of Penrose and Martel. The two blocks see considerable pedestrian traffic crossing the busy street to access businesses and parking, and there are no traffic lights or stop signs to slow down vehicle traffic between Mockingbird and McCommas. Recently the city installed standard pedestrian crosswalk warning signs which did little to slow down vehicle traffic.

The signs will be installed on a trial basis since they will be in the middle of the roadway where there is no protective median and could be subject to frequent knock-downs. If they need to be replaced frequently, city staff will consider removing them and implementing alternative measures. In addition, the city has re-striped pedestrian crosswalks at both intersections. The work will be completed by November 30, weather permitting. Thanks, Zach!

NEW BOOK FROM NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENT Neighborhood resident and exercise physiologist, Alice Ann Dailey MS, would like to share with LGNA neighbors that her book, Dailey Strengthening, 6 Keys to Balance Core Muscles for Optimal Health, is now published and its website, www.DaileyStrengthening.com is live. Give it a look.

Alice Ann says “I hope you like it. Remember – Don’t just exercise more – exercise smarter!”

When does a mild-mannered PTA president turn into a superhero? The answer is, whenever she’s needed.

Volunteering became a passion, a heroic gesture, and a way of life for dedicated parent Sofia Hurley whose son Kelly is a fourth grader at Robert E. Lee Elementary. Sofia spends most of her “spare” time volunteering at Lee as a two-year PTA president, on the school advisory committee (SBDM), and as DISD SHAC sub-committee chair for Nutrition and Wellness Policy.

Sofia’s volunteerism extends farther, however, as she is a member of Heroes, Cops and Kids, a non-profit organization composed of police officers who volunteer their own funds and time to dress as superheroes so children in the community may feel at ease when talking to them. Talking to their favorite superhero is frequently not as threatening as looking at a police officer. The team led by Sgt. Merlin Lofton (Captain America) and retired officer Ric Campbell (Batman) visits schools to advocate anti-bullying, goes to hospitals to help ill children smile and forget their sickness, and engages children at many Police Department community events like National Night Out and Chief on the Beat.

Sofia is Wonder Woman. First volunteering as a costume-repair girl, she touched up costume paint and did alterations and maintenance. She helped officers suit up and then photographed the heroes. Her role as the new Wonder Woman came later when Captain America recognized her heroic deeds.

Inspired by Heroes, Cops and Kids’ mission, Captain America/Sgt. Lofton’s vision of Schools of Heroes, and the 11-hour trip of Sr. Corporal Damon Cole (Superman/Iron Man) to visit a sick child in Illinois, Sofia found her passion at last. Her unique vision is to create a worldwide community to make young adults and children into young superheroes and inspire them to follow the footsteps of individuals who try to make a difference through heroic action with a twist of fun by dressing up as superheroes. She thanks her husband Patrick and her son Kelly (who dresses as Superboy) for supporting her dream.

Visit www.LGNA.net to read more of Sofia’s inspiring story including a recent trip to her native Philippines.

Neighbor Angelique Hamilton says that it’s easy. Just gather a few neighbors (It’s okay to start small.), select a theme, and go for it. She says, “Our dream is that eventually every street in our amazing neighborhood would theme out and make the M Streets a holiday celebration of lights and décor – whether it’s Candy Cane Lane, Santa’s Street, or Hanukkah Avenue.” The challenge goes to all the diverse neighborhoods within the Lower Greenville Neighborhood Association area – Ross to Mockingbird.

Contact Angelique Hamilton, the 5700 Morningside block captain at 817-729-4206 or [email protected] if you have questions or want tips.

Join in the fun and feel free to walk or drive by Candy Cane Lane (a.k.a., Morningside Avenue). Happy Holidays, Neighbors!

WHAT Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner

Find out what’s going on. Like Us on FACEBOOK

Who can resist an additional Thanksgiving dinner – one that is guaranteed to include good food and good company?

Once again LGNA will join Skillman Church of Christ and other neighborhood groups to host an early community Thanksgiving dinner the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. This year the date is November 24, and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Skillman Church is located at 3014 Skillman with a well-lighted parking lot. The church will be collecting monetary donations for the North Texas Food Bank.

Turkeys, hams, drinks, and dinnerware will be provided by Skillman Church and the neighborhood associations. Neighbors are urged to bring salads, vegetables, desserts, and/or rolls in disposable containers.

Come and enjoy yourselves. No long speeches, and you know that no one is going to bring bad food to a potluck dinner.

(CONTINUED INSIDE)

and who doesn’t, not every detail needs to be posted. This applies not only to those long, out-of-town trips, but even posting that you are headed out for a day of shopping or to relatives for the day. Such notices provide bad guys/girls a treasure trove of information. Posting a photo from Tarrant County that is geocoded lets anyone know date/time details in addition to location. The goal is to minimize the amount of information generously provided to the criminals.

Have a safe holiday season.

Over the course of the past year, many Morningside neighbors have made plans to expand beyond the one

block. There has also been a great deal of interest from other streets asking how they can get involved.

You can contact me directly via email at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you sometime soon!

AN EARLY START FOR THANKSGIVING

6. Don’t display large amounts of cash when making purchases.

7. Guys: Keep your wallet in a jacket pocket or your front pocket to discourage pickpockets.

8. Gals: Carry a smaller handbag when possible. These are harder to grab.

Most importantly, if you find yourself being robbed, don’t fight back. Nothing you own is worth your life.
