CRIME PREVENTION 20132K Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa
By PETER [email protected]
When local law enforce-ment needs to enter a poten-tially dangerous location orneed to conduct search war-rants, a specially trainedgroup of officers is preparedto take on the task and makesure everybody involved issafe.
This group of officers frommultiple agencies is known asthe Special EmergencyResponse Team.
SERT, which began around10 years ago, has many differ-ent responsibilities, accordingto Capt. Roger Porter of theFort Dodge PoliceDepartment.
“We train to respond tohigh-risk entries, search war-rant executions, barracadedsubjects and active shooters,”Porter said. “We’re also ableto respond to natural disastersand help out in those types ofevents.”
Porter, who is in charge ofthe SERT operations, saidwhen the team began only theFort Dodge PoliceDepartment was involved.
“Shortly after we startedup, the Sheriff’s Departmentcontacted us about joining,”he said. “After that, wethought we could expand it tomake the team more region-al.”
Soon other law enforce-ment agencies beganapproaching Porter about join-ing CERT. Today, the teamincludes one deputy from the
Calhoun County Sheriff’sDepartment and and one offi-cer with the Rockwell CityPolice Department.
The team also includes 12Fort Dodge police officers andfive Webster County sheriff’sdeputies.
“We’ve also had othersexpress interest in joining,”Porter said.
Sgt. Luke Fleener, of theWebster County Sheriff’sDepartment, is another mem-ber of SERT. He said any offi-cer is welcome to join the teamfollowing a selection process.
“First you need to submit anapplication to be a part of theteam,” Fleener said. “There’salso a training process thatapplicants have to go throughbefore you can get to be a partof the team.”
“The physical and trainingrequirements need to be metall the time in order to remainon the team,” Fleener added.
Fort Dodge Police ChiefTim Carmody said officerswho are a part of SERT canuse their specialized trainingduring their regular work.
“That training can helpthem remain calm in stressfulsituations when they’re out onpatrol,” he said. “Becausethey’re working as a team, they can use those skills tohelp make their fellow officerssafer. Members of SERTknow what it means to bringthe team together to get theirjob done.”
Fleener said because SERTmembers work together, they
know to trust each other dur-ing stressful situations.
“We work together as ateam,” he said. “You learnhow to trust your teammatesby working together.”
He also said SERT hashelped him in his duties work-ing on patrol.
“It makes you mentallystrong because you’ve trainedenough for different situa-tions,” he said. “SERT is onemore tool we have to protectthe community.”
