CRIME STATISTICS This section includes tables providing statistics of crime in India. The statistics were collected by the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs till 1983 and National Crime Records Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs from 1984 onwards, from the Police authorities of the State Governments. All India information relates to the sum-total of available data of States/U.Ts. only and is, therefore, subject to revision. Table 29.1 This table presents the incidence of cognizable crimes under Indian Penal Code. The incidence of theft includes Auto theft and other theft. The incidence shown under ‘other crimes’ includes crimes other than the specified crimes. Tables 29.2 and 29.3 These tables provide statistics of cognizable crimes classified by cases and by persons separately. Table 29.2 gives the disposal of cases by courts and table 29.3 gives the disposal of persons by courts. Table 29.4 This table gives information relating to recidivism among persons arrested under IPC crime. Table 29.5 Information relating to the no. of cases reporting property stolen and recovered, due to various type of crimes is given in this table. Tables 29.6 to 29.12 These tables present data relating to juvenile delinquency under different crime heads, sex and age-wise distribution of juveniles apprehended; Number of juveniles arrested by their education, family background, economic setup etc. besides the disposal of juveniles arrested and sent to courts in India. Table 29.13 Information relating to number of persons arrested under important heads of crime and classified according to sex, is given in this table. Table 29.14 This table presents number of cases reported due to various motives of murder and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Tables 29.15 and 29.16 The actual strength of both armed and civil police, as on 31st December of the year stated, under different ranks, is furnished in table 29.14. The information relating to civil police also includes district armed reserved police.
