Board Making on Whidbey Island

by David Aiken

On a trip this past summer to the West Coast, I en-joyed spending a couple weeks in my home state,

Washington. Most of the time was spent with family, but I also got to see some cribbage friends and play my favorite game. One highlight of my trip was visiting a cribbage board–making facility on Whidbey Island in Washington State. And what an eye-opener it was!

If you envision a couple of old guys drilling holes in boards, you’d be only partially right. But this is cribbage board–making with a modern twist.

Once known for its loganberry farms, Green-bank WA is now a small community that is home to cribbageboard.com. The company got its start back in the late 70s as Seattle Custom Gift, but made the

Bruce Howard (left) and Chris Franko on Whidbey Island.

switch to personalized custom-made crib-bage boards when the internet came along.

The creative genius behind cribbage board.com is Bruce Howard, who de-signed the process from blank board to finished product. Bruce sold the company to Chris Franko six years ago, and business is still booming.

The secret to making such high qualify cribbage boards is a complicated machine called a CNC (computer numerical con-trol). This computer-controlled machine drills holes and makes precise cuts to pro-

duce the beautiful boards. After the boards are cut and drilled,

they are coated with a special resin to give them a smooth, protective surface.

When someone orders a board, Bruce and Chris put the finishing touches on it by incorporating whatever personal touches and memorabilia the customer wants. One of their specialties is four-play-er boards for personnel in the US Sub-marine Service, but you can have boards customized with names and initials, fam-ily photos, favorite quotations, fraternal organization logos, school colors, coins, pins—you name it! With multiple woods and finishes to choose from, the combina-tions are endless.

So, when you want that perfect gift for a friend or family member, check out cribbageboard.com at cribbageboard.com! You’ll be glad you did. CW

Alaska CruiseWith nearly ninety cribbage players signed up so far, the 2017 Alaska–Inside Passage eight-day cribbage cruise on the Carnival Legend is one of the most popular cribbage cruise to date! The logistics we are dealing with make it essential that we know exact-ly who is intending to play. We are already pushing the envelope with the number of cribbage players we can accommodate. (A wonderful problem!) Therefore, if you are booked on this cruise and haven’t received the tournament entry form, please con-tact Jeanne Jelke ([email protected] or 509.521.3153) or Roger Wilson ([email protected] or 303.254.4670). Entry fees must be paid in advance (the registration deadline is April 7). There are still a handful of cabins available. If you are still considering this cruise, please con-tact Roger.

Jeanne Jelke (Glacier Classic TD)

Thank YouMilwaukee Peggers Club 6 would like to publicly say “thank you” to Marlene Lazachek for her long and dedicated hours of building and running our club. She of-ten has taken care of members when they were sick or in need of help, even giving a ride to club/tournaments. After twen-ty-seven years she decided to step back and concentrate on her other duties and

activities for the ACC. Enjoy your time, stop by when you can, and God speed.

Ellen Kutz (Club 6 director)

Thank You, Cribbage FamilyWe want to publicly thank our extend-ed cribbage family for the generosity and kindness demonstrated to helping support our surrogacy fund. Fifty-six cribbage players have collectively donated a gen-erous total of $2,325! Numerous others have been supportive of our parenting journey as expressed by their concern, love, and prayers for continued heal-ing from our recent pregnancy losses as well as expressing hope and best wishes for a positive future. My husband and I are humbled and extremely appreciative. If you care to read more about how we came to this point in our lives and/or want to follow our surrogacy journey, go to gofundme.com/2jmjsp8. Thank you so much for your continued support, love, positive thoughts, and prayers! God bless! Best of luck to all on the cribbage trail!

With hope in our hearts, Julie (Mack) and Cecil Felkins (Woodland CA)

Triple Dippers Three players qualified in three of the four sanctioned events at Grand National 36. Life Master David O’Neil (Clarkston GA) qualified in both mains and the GN con (102 total MRPs); Life Master (2) Ira Deutsch (Smith River CA) qualified in both midweek tourneys and the GN con (90 MRPs); and Grand Master Paul Gregson (Antioch CA) qualified in the midweek con and both weekend tourneys (26 MRPs). 19 + 19 + 19 At the Yooper Classic in Watersmeet MI, Life Master () Jeanne Hof-bauer (Washougal WA) dealt herself a 38-special and then had a 19-hand in the very next deal. That’s a total of zero points in hand + crib + hand. Tip of the week: do not try this at home!

Ruling Points . . .When special situations happen, the rules do not change to accommodate them, unless specifically noted in the rule-book. A player recently asked if a flush could be counted when they had a short hand or crib (three cards). That is, if all three cards were the same suit, does this constitute a flush for three points (four with the cut card). No, it does not. The scoring chart in rule 1.7 (page 10 in the 2016 rulebook) is very clear about what card combinations make scoring points, and if not listed, none are available.

Ruling Points is written by Patrick & Michael Barrett (Wisconsin Rapids WI). The brothers have been ACC judges since the early 1990s, and Patrick has been a senior judge since 2002. If you have a question about the rule-

book or a judge call, send it to them at [email protected].

RULEBOOKThe 2016 rulebook is now available (see the November Cribbage World, pages 19–21). All current judges have been mailed a free copy of the new rulebook. Oth-er members may order a rulebook by sending a $2 check to the following address:

GAME ONTeaching Tip

I know you have never heard of “cribbersizing,”

because it’s a word I made up. It means incorporating physical

exercise into a game of cribbage. This is a fun and great way to

add interest when teaching youth. What I do every now and then

is declare that today is a cribbersize class. Students then know

that if they get a twelve point hand or higher, their opponent must

immediately do a series of push-ups, sit-ups, or jumping jacks.

Kids love this, as it balances a sedentary game with movement.

I tried to get my wife to agree to cribbersize, with the loser of

having to do a lap up and down the stairs. I thought the idea was

brilliant, but it was a no-go.

Youth NewsThere is no doubt that youth cribbage is growing in popularity.

There are already three sanctioned youth events on the 2017

Tournament Trail:• February 25: Sierra Youth Cribbage Tournament (Grass Valley CA);

contact Dan Zeisler ([email protected] or 530.263.7468)

• June 3: Cribbage Memorial Youth Tournament (El Dorado Hills CA);

contact Don Howard ([email protected] or 916.212.2465)

• September 8: 1st Youth Grand National (Lincoln City OR); contact Don

Howard or Dan Zeisler

If you have information about a youth event taking place in 2017,

please let me know so I can help promote it. Also, if you are

interested in hosting a sanctioned youth event, I’ll be happy to

direct you on how to do that as well. Contact me at danthefan@

ACCAwardsPaul learned to play cribbage from fellow workers at GE—Al Lokiz, Art Button, and Ernie Semsky—during lunch. He joined the ACC in 1988 after returning from work in Germany. His cribbage mentor

is the best player he knows—Frank Dan-ielski. Paul has been Halifax Area Club 230 champion three times, and he has earned his Silver Award. His first tournament win

was the Lewis and Clark Classic in Yankton SD. He currently has nine tournament wins. The National Open in Raleigh is his favorite, though the JPW/ACC Open is close behind. His toughest oppo-nents are David Fournier and Barri Gehrand, so it is no wonder that his top cribbage moment this year was beating David in two games to win a recent consolation. Paul also enjoys square danc-

ing, computers, and yard sales.

Paul C. Barnes (Daytona Beach FL) Life Master #227

Bob’s father introduced him to cribbage when he was about ten years old. In college he played mostly bridge and setback. When he was selected for promotion to the home office with his em-ployer, the joke was that in order to be eligible to work in that department you had to know how to play cribbage as it was a lunchtime tradition. Bob joined the ACC and Hartford Metro Club 26 in early 1997. He had been told that in that club “we beat each other up” pretty regularly, and Bob learned this to be true, as his Silver Award is still over 300 points away and approaching very slowly. Bob tries to attend National Open, Grand National, TOC, and JPW/ACC Open regu-larly (except when snowed in). He considers his regular traveling companion Bill Shoemaker to be his toughest opponent. Bob is an active participant in his church choir and in the Freemasons, having just retired following twelve years as Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut.

Robert Fitzgerald (East Hartford CT)

Life Master #228

(In Audrey’s words:) I started playing in the ACC in 2000 and traveling to the USA for tournaments in 2004. Lorne Tanton and Doris

Sanders took me un-der their wings and al-lowed me to tag along with them. In 2005 my

son, Terry, started coming to some of the tour-naments. Thank goodness he did because he is the one who told me when I got my Master (Edmonton, 2010), Grand Master (Reno, 2013),

and Life Master (Missoula, 2016). My most memorable tournament was in Missoula this year. I beat DeLynn Colvert (my mentor and favorite opponent) in the finals when he had me down 2–0 and achieved my Life Master. And later the same week, I retired. One of my favorite comments is, “In what other sport can you see the great country of USA, meet wonderful people and, if you’re lucky, make a few bucks?” I play at Club 261, and I can proudly say I have had four generations play at the club. I am blessed with three sons (and their wives), nine grandchildren, and one great grandson. I do want to say thank you to the members of the ACC: Bless you—each and every one.

You are holding A-2-3-4, and your opponent leads a middle card. How should you respond? In general situations I would play an Ace on a 6 lead, 4 on a 7 lead, 3 on an 8 lead, and a 2 on a 9 lead. So four different responses to the four middle-card leads. However if you are feeling somewhat adventurous—which sometimes crosses my mind—you could play a 4 on opponent’s 6 lead, and see what interesting compli-cations ensue!

Life Master (2) Rob Medeiros (Dorchester MA) won the 2016 TOC in Reno using smart plays like this. Send questions

and comments to him at [email protected].

Laurie’s parents taught her to play at a very young age, and she played with family all through childhood. She currently belongs to Boise Peggers, after starting with the Quincy Club in the ear-

ly 90s and then belonging to the Arizona Roadrunners for twenty years. She joined the ACC in 1985 when she and Ron (now her mentor) were dating. Her first two tour-

naments were the Quincy World Championship and the National Open in Raleigh NC. Her first tournament win was in the 1994 Ore-gon Coast Classic main in Lincoln City. Her favorite tournament is Grand National, as it allows her and Ron to travel all over the coun-try seeing wonderful places they would not have visited otherwise! This has been an eventful cribbage year for the Logans, with Ron

ending up in the hospital with a heart attack in Reno in February, and Laurie ending up in the hospital in Bethesda MD. But the highlight was attending the awards banquet and seeing Ron inducted into the ACC Hall of Fame! Laurie en-joys being a grandma to ten+ grand-children and eagerly awaits her first two great-granddaughters before the end of the year.

Cribbage Board of the MonthBY JAY FULWIDER

Jay Fulwider collects cribbage boards from his home in picturesque Washington State, where he also enjoys golf, fishing, and racquetball. His philosophy on the key to life: “Just keep your pegs moving.” Ideas for and questions about this column may be sent to him at [email protected] (put “Cribbage Board” in the subject line).

Last September I attended the seventeenth annual Cribbage

Board Collectors Society (CBCS) convention in Denver. The highlight every year is getting together with old friends and meeting new ones. An added bonus this year was the silent auction of a former CBCS member’s collection.

Marvin Maxell passed away a few years ago and left his collection of around one thousand boards to the CBCS. It was a huge undertaking for the CBCS to get Marv’s collection to Denver and give our members first

shot at these wonderful boards. On behalf of all our attending members, I want to thank Dan Betz who, on his way home from a Reno tourna-

ment, rented a trailer and transport-ed the boards from Salt Lake City to Denver. A big thanks also goes to Ed and Jane McLaughlin, Terry Coons, Cec Bradshaw, Jim Her-zog, and Peter Leach, who sorted through the boards and helped with the auction. A final thanks to Lar-ry Snow, who sponsored a great convention. Knowing the amount of work that these folks and others put in, I seriously doubt that the CBCS will be accepting any more collec-tions. I hope my nieces and neph-ews will like my collection.

The two boards in the pho-to came from the auction. The top board is brass and the bottom board is silver or nick-el plated. I have no history on the brass board, but the oth-er board was manufactured by the George C. Allis Com-pany (Derby CT). It dates to the mid- to late 1800s. Both boards have Whist markers (counters) at each end.

According to Encyclo-

pedia Britannica, the first record of the game Whist was in 1529 and it was

Page 17: CRIBBAGE WORLD · CRIBBAGE WORLD ♦ Recent tourneys ♦ pages 6–9 Cribbersize! ♦ page 13 Be kind ♦ page 19 Ev Bey ♦ page 19 New Gold Awards: Njaa and Gooden ♦ page 22 continued

17

called “Trump.” It had several other names until Whist was adopted in the 1700s. The markers are used for scoring, but could also be used for crib-bage “games won.”

Thanks again to all involved with the CBCS convention. Our members got a chance to add some interesting boards to our collections. CW

CBOM—continued from page 16

Gayle LelandaisGayle Lelandais (Fair Oaks CA) passed away peacefully on October 17 after being placed in hospice care. She was a recent member of the River City Peggers, having moved to the Sacramento area after resid-ing in Paradise CA for many years. Gayle was also a Soroptimist, in the Pilot Club in Paradise, and a volunteer grandparent in the Paradise schools. She enjoyed crafts, collecting antiques, and the holidays, es-pecially Christmas. She will be missed by her many friends in the cribbage family.

Beverley J. RossBeverley Ross (Modesto CA) passed away on November 5, from Alzheimer’s. She and her husband, Frank, were longstand-ing members of Sonora Club 140. You could always count on Bev for a warm smile and a friendly hello. She loved the game and played as long as she could be-fore the disease took away her ability, even then she still had that sunny disposition that made everyone who knew her love her. All of us at Club 140 send our deepest symphony to Frank and her family. She will be greatly missed.

Harold L. SchmelzerHarold Schmelzer, who spent winters in

Oregon and summers in Alaska for over forty-five years, succumbed to a failing heart on October 5. He was 85. He served in the Army in Panama from 1952 to 1954 and spent the rest of his life building, in-vesting in real estate, and enjoying artistic pursuits. Many cribbage players play with pegs he made, and a few are lucky enough to have his specially made cribbage boards. His last wish was for his friends to cheer his great long life.

Lucy Ann WilkinsonPahrump Peggers Club 360 lost a lovely member on October 10 at the age of 76. Lucy and her husband of 57 years, Le-Roy, lived in Henderson NV but would drive an hour to Pahrump to play cribbage most Thursdays. Lucy always smiled and had a good word to say about everyone. She loved to talk about her children and grandchildren, her life while living in Alaska, and working for the school dis-trict in Fairbanks. She and LeRoy origi-nally retired to Washington and belonged to Chehalis-Centralia Club 232. Lucy talked about how she learned a lot about cribbage from Ras. The President’s Columnb y J e a n n e H o f b a u e r

As we all know, it sometimes gets pretty crowded at our tournament playing tables. I have been asked to talk about “personal space.” Luckily, most of us are not “ter-ritorial.” In my experience I see mostly politeness and a friendly sharing of space. However, it would be just good manners to keep your personal items to a minimum

because of the limited area. Let’s take a leap and say that “personal space” could also include your scorecard. Please refrain from writing anything on an opponent’s scorecard other than your initials and seat number, unless you are a judge making a correction or notation.

Speaking of good manners, it has come to my attention that some of the chatter on the ACC Facebook page, and other pages dealing with the ACC, isn’t always so polite. I do not participate in Facebook, but I know several members who do, and they share with me sometimes. I think that

it is a wonderful arena to share good ideas about cribbage. I love to see the pictures of people playing, tournament trophies, and good hands. Many members post the brackets on Facebook, and it is fun to see how our friends are doing in tournament play.

I think that Facebook has the greatest

potential of anything else we are doing to attract new members. But how can we expect people to want to join us if bick-ering, discontent, and meanness pervade this platform? I am suggesting that before you post something that might not be seen as interesting or friendly you consider the possible harm you could be doing. Peo-ple seeking entertainment are not going to go where they are made to feel uncom-fortable. And why would you want to hurt anybody’s feel-ings?

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”— the Dalai Lama

Ev Bey had a huge influence on the ACC. His Quincy World Championship predated the ACC, and it became the first sanctioned tournament on the West Coast. Ev served on the BOD for twenty years, including a stint as ACC president beginning in 1994. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1983. And he had an outsize influence in northern California throughout his career as a newspaperman. The newspapers that he owned and operated are still in ex-istence, and one of them recently published a sesquicentennial tribute to the 150-year history of the company. Go to plumasnews.com and type “paying tribute” in the search box. A picture of Ev and Fey Bey appears on page 6.

The Grass Roots season is well underway, with about a quarter of the season over by now. Thanks to the tournament directors for sending all the news about grand slams, 29-hands, and other good stuff Keep checking the Grass Roots Facebook page (facebook.com/GrassRootsCribbage) for more recent news.

Timber Capital Club 62 (Roseburg OR)—during the summer session and the beginning of September, Tracy Meyer had two grand slams back-to-back. Frank Ornie slammed the club twice in July and September. Raymond Burns got the last slam of the month.

In Century Peggers Club 100 (Napa CA), when it rains, it pours! It was founded in 1989 and during the twenty-seven-year period up until June of this year, they had only two 29-hands in weekly play. Then it hit! Garrett Van Scyoc had one on June 7, and Yvonne Bowers had one on October 10. Finally, Thelma Weber, visiting from Club 21, hit one on November 11!

Halifax Area Club 230 (Ormond Beach FL)—Paul Engle wins two weeks in a row, with a grand slam on November 1!

Twin City Peggers Club 240 (Maplewood MN) congratulates Mary Thacker, who had a grand slam on October 26.

Chippewa Valley Cribbage Club 284 (Eau Claire WI)—scoring an impressive 21/9 +196, Max Ulberg passed Terry Pederson’s 19/9 +145 as the high scorecard for the sea-

son! Max’s grand slam is the second highest in the sixteen-year history of the club.

Club 306 (El Dorado Hills CA)—John O’Donnell recorded a grand slam on Sep-tember 7, in his first tournament—a happy new member with a very nice 20/9 +180 card!

Central Wisconsin Club 120 (Wisconsin Rapids WI)—Elliott Havitz scored his sec-ond 29-hand (and sixteenth in club histo-ry) on November 3.

Granite State Cribbers Club 314 (Hudson NH)—Patti Jones cut the case five to earn her first ever 28-hand!

Dennis Morin of Boxcar Peggers Club 371 (Citrus Heights CA) had the first grand slam of the season in that club.

Club 309 (Kelowna BC) has been active: Al Topham a 28-hand on October 12; Gary Kerrison had a 29-hand on October 19; Jill Rix had a 28-hand on October 26; and Al Topham had a grand slam on No-vember 2!

Club 328 (Bradenton FL)—on October 22 Steven Amaral and Mary Ann Snell were battling head-to-head. Steve emerged the victor even though Mary Ann had a 28-hand in the crib! Since the start of the

Ross learned cribbage from his father and his wife. He joined the ACC in 1992 and attends Monterey County Club 82 in Seaside CA; he has been club Champion four times. For two long months

at the end of last season, he needed only 4 GRPs to reach Gold, but he finally made it on the first week of the new season! Ross won his first sanctioned

tournament at Alamo CA in 1998; he now has nineteen wins. His toughest opponent is Jim Langley. Ross enjoys collecting wine, cooking, and taking road trips with his wife; they have driven to Alaska three times.

H. Ross Njaa (Salinas CA) Gold #69

Jerry learned to play cribbage at age sixteen when he worked at Streib’s Drive-In. He got his first 29-hand one week after learning how to play and finally got another one in 2009 (it was dealt to him by Fran Ward, when Jerry needed 28 points to win the game!). Jerry joined the ACC in 1986 when he played his first tournament—the National Open, which is still his favorite. Jerry has been champion of Raleigh Club 58 three times and has several mentors there—Jeff Raynes, Cathy Perkins, and Larry Phifer. Jerry won his first tournament in Fayetteville NC in 2006 and went on a spree, winning three of his next four tourneys! His toughest opponent is his wife, Barbara. They play four games every evening for five bucks per game. He won’t give the exact amount, but he nearly had to take out a loan to pay her at the end of last year! Jerry’s greatest cribbage moment occurred in Portsmouth VA in 2000 when, after losing his first five games, he then won the next seventeen games (with five skunks to become high qualifier) plus the first seven games in the high roller that evening (he won it)—for twenty-four consecutive wins! Jerry joined the US Navy in 1964 to see the world (he did: North Atlantic, Arctic Circle, Mediterranean, Vietnam, South America), then worked at IBM until 1992, when he became a real estate appraiser. After re-retiring in 2015, he plays cribbage and golf—his other favorite past time.

Jerry Gooden (Raleigh NC)

season, the club has had four 28-hands, including Bob Labossiere (9/17), Don-na Lindsey (10/01), and Roy Klementti (11/12).

During play at Valley Eagles Club 198 (Spokane Valley WA), Bob Kemp and Dick Froehlich were the last two players. Bob was dealing from 34 holes out, with Dick 10 holes out and counting first. They teased each other: Bob told Dick that a

“good player” could make it out from there, while Dick smiled and said “Show me!” Bob dealt himself 3-3-3-9 and threw 5-K into his crib. Dick threw 10-K to the crib, and the cut card was the case 3. After the pegging, Bob’s 24-hand and 8-crib gave him the victory. This was the last hand of the night, so Bob won the 24-prize, added 12 GRPs to his season total, and also took first place with 12/6. It doesn’t get any bet-ter than this!

25 Years Ago in the ACC

The cover of the September 1991 Cribbage World an-nounced that the Veterans Day Classic in Reno drew a record 348 players and was won by Ruth Rutherford (Meadow Valley CA).

Elsewhere we read that Robert Drukman (then of North Easton MA, now of Middleboro MA) won the Portside Open main in Portsmouth VA. An obit-uary for Arnold Crews (Jacksonville FL) appears on page 10; Arnold was the first ACC national champion (in 1981) and the first ACC treasurer. And a chart showing discard decisions by Russ Adam (Minneapolis MN) appears on pages 12–13.
