Step-By-Step Guide to the Perfect School Party

The key to a successful school party is to keep it simple. Children are excited and active on holidays and party days at school. A simple and familiar party structure works best for everyone. You need three basic things for a school party - games, snacks, and favors. This basic school party can be adapted to any holiday and any age.

Step 1 - Meet with the Teacher

• A few weeks before the party, meet with your child's teacher. Share with her your plans for the games, snacks, and favors to get her approval and suggestions. Make note of any restrictions on games or activities in the classroom.

• Get the names and phone numbers of the other parents in the class. Recruit a helper or two.

Step 2 - Order Party Supplies

• You will not need plates and napkins for snacks. The PTO will provide snacks and drinks.

• If choosing prizes, pencils and stickers are always favorites. Prizes should be give to all kids.

Step 3 - Plan the Party Games

• You'll need about three games for the school party - two active or competitive games and one quieter game or craft activity to be played at tables or desks. Please reference this manual for party ideas.

• If trying a new game, practice it first at home, but try to keep it a secret from your child who will be attending the party.

• An activity done on paper, such as crossword puzzle, works well as a back-up activity for children who run out of things to do or who are waiting to take turns at a particular game. (Try not to have too much waiting time. Kids are ready to go.)

Step 4 - Prepare the Games

• Gather the supplies you need and make any game items. • Write down the instructions for the games and review them a couple of

times so that you know how to move right into the game when the time is

Page 10: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

10

right; for example, when half the kids are standing on their desks and the other half are wrestling on the floor.

• Put the games and instructions in another box, ready to go the day of the party.

• Plan on dividing the class into smaller groups, which works best. For older grades, groups of three works well if you want to do a relay race and have three teams compete one at a time. Dividing the class into boys versus girls works great in forth through sixth grades.

Step 5 - Start the Party!

• Snacks will be delivered prior to the start of the party. If not you can locate them in the teachers lounge.

• Start the party with a fun game. The activity level of the game depends on the size of the classroom and the teacher's patience. At the very least, kids should be able to get out of their desks and sit in a circle on the floor. While one parent leads the active game, the helper should distribute the craft or quiet game materials to the children's desks or tables.

• After the first game, direct the kids back to their desks or tables for the second activity. This can be an art or craft activity, or some sort of printable game sheet. The purpose is to let the kids quiet down a bit for snack time. While they play at their desks for a few minutes, plate the snacks for each child.

Most of all—HAVE FUN!!!

Facts

Pumpkin Facts

• Pumpkin flowers are edible. • The largest pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and

weighed over 350 pounds. It used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 12 dozen eggs and took six hours to bake.

• Pumpkins originated in Central America. • The largest pumpkin grown was recorded on October 2, 2004 weighing 1,446

lbs. • Pumpkins are 90 percent water. • Pumpkins are fruit. • Eighty percent of the pumpkin supply in the United States is available in

October. • Six of the seven continents can grow pumpkins including Alaska! Antarctica

is the only continent that they won't grow in. • Pumpkins, and their seeds, were a celebrated food of the Native American

Indians who treasured them both for their dietary and medicinal properties. • Illinois grows more pumpkins than any other state in the country. It

harvests nearly 12,300 acres of fruit.

The First Jack O'Lantern

The Irish carved Turnips and put coals or small candles inside. They were placed outside their homes on All Hallow's Eve to ward off evil spirits. They were also known to use potatoes and Rutabagas. When Irish Immigrants came to America, they quickly discovered that Jack O'Lanterns were much easier to carve out and began using them. This truly neat tradition quickly spread to the general population in America and elsewhere.

Halloween Facts

The carving of jack-o'-lanterns originated from the tradition of carving the faces of lost souls into hollowed out pumpkins and turnips. A candle was placed inside the carvings making the faces glow. The Halloween lanterns were placed on doorsteps to ward off evil spirits.

• The world's fastest time to carve a face into a pumpkin is 54.72 seconds, by Stephen Clarke (USA), on October 23, 2001 (source: Guinness World Records)

• More than 93 percent of children go trick-or-treating each year. (Source: NCA)

• Halloween also is recognized as the 3rd biggest party day after New Year's and Super Bowl Sunday.

• Trick-or-treating is thought to have its origins in a European custom called souling where people would beg for "soul cakes."

• There were estimated 36.8 million potential "trick-or-treaters" ages 5-13

Boo Who?

The object of this game is to identify each child (i.e. the "ghost") by his or her eyes. Supplies:

• Old white sheet • Pair of scissors

Preparation:

1. Set up by hanging the sheet from a doorway or the ceiling, and by cutting two holes in it at the smallest child's eye level.

2. Alternatively, you can drape the ghost with a sheet that already has eyeholes cut in it. The latter may be easier if the heights of the children are widely varied.

Directions:

1. Divide the children into two teams. 2. Send one team out of the room or behind the hanging sheet. 3. Have the other team sit facing the sheet or the entrance to the room. 4. Select one team member at a time from the team, which is hidden, or

outside of the room to be the ghost. The ghost must either put his or her eyes up to the holes in the sheet or put on the ghost sheet and step back into the room.

5. The opposing team then has 10 seconds to guess the identity of the ghost hidden behind the sheet. They get 1 point for every correct guess as the other team members take turns being the ghost.

6. After everyone on a team has had a chance to be the ghost, the teams switch places, and the guessing begins again.

7. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Boo am I?

A frenzied Halloween-themed twist on a traditional game of charades. Supplies:

• Boo am I cards • Pen • White balloons

Directions:

1. Print the clues for Halloween characters and cut into small pieces. Put each slip inside white "ghost" balloons, blow up the balloons and set them aside.

2. Gather the kids into two teams and have each kid pick a player to go first. 3. The player has exactly three minutes to choose a balloon, pop it (by any

means necessary), read the clue inside and act it out until her team guesses the clue.

4. The child from each team to guess correctly picks the next balloon.

Haunted Treasure Hunt

Ghost are invisible, and so are these notes that will send you on a mystery-message treasure hunt. Supplies:

• Print clue cards • Thick white candle • Treasure (candy bars, pencils, or other trinkets)

Preparation:

1. Select a treasure hunt route to send the group on. Come up with at least five places for the treasure seekers to search. Always check with the teacher for appropriate hiding places.

2. Create a clue for each stop on the journey. Each clue needs to describe the place where the next clue can be found. For instance, have the hunt begin in the classroom, and then give them a clue that would lead them to the gym. Then the clue in the gym would lead them to the library, and so on.

3. Print the preformed clue sheets (enough copies for each group). If the class is 20 kids, setup 4 groups of 5 kids. If there were 5 clues there would be a total of 20 clues. Four cards at each stop (one for each group).

4. Write down each clue on a sheet of paper using the end of a white candle to create “invisible ink.” You may find it easier to draw a picture of each place the kids should go.

5. Before anyone arrives, put you clues in place. The clues don’t have to be in plain sight, but if they’re too hard to find, they may not find the treasure.

6. Hide a treasure at the final stop. Think of a treasure that everyone can enjoy, such as candy bars for everyone.

Directions:

1. Gather as a small group and start them off with the first clue. 2. Have a volunteer accompany them to make sure they stay on course. 3. Give them one pencil, the weapon for reading the clues. 4. Explain that when they find each piece of paper containing a clue, they need

to softly rub the side of the pencil lead back and forth over the paper until the haunted handwriting magically appears.

Page 67: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

67

5. After they discover the clue have them take their revealed clue with them, leaving the other cards for the next group.

6. While the other students wait in the classroom coordinate another activity they can do while the treasure hunt is going on, such as word finds or puzzles.

7. Once the treasure hunt group arrives send another group out to find their treasure.

Suggestions: Clue #1-This ghost has been checked out. (Library) Clue #2-The goblins are hungry and are ready to eat lunch (gym) Clue #3-Vampires would not survive in this sunny place. (Sunroom) Clue #4-The witch’s spell doesn’t work on the computer. (Computer lab) Clue#5-It is time to announce the attendance of all the ghouls and monsters. (Front desk)

Monster Mouth Game

Don't be scared--this monster doesn't bite--even though the goal is to feed the monster while testing your marble shooting skills. Supplies:

• Shoe box or cereal box • Paint or construction paper • Googly eyes • Goofy ears • Masking tape • Marbles

Preparation:

1. Cut monster teeth out of the edge of a shoebox or cereal box and invert it so the teeth touch the table. Use paint or construction paper, googly eyes and goofy ears to decorate the box to look like a monster.

2. Place the box on the ground and mark off a starting line with masking tape. Directions:

1. Offer the kids marbles to flick into the monster's mouth. If you're playing with big kids, give each tooth a score (the smaller the hole, the higher the score). The player with the highest score wins.

71

Mummy Mania

Twist your guests into a frightening frenzy with this simple game that has kids writhing with delight.

Supplies:

• White crepe paper or toilet paper • Spooky music

Preparation:

None Directions:

1. Divide the kids into teams of two and give each pair a roll of white crepe paper. Instruct one member of each team to race to wrap his partner, mummy-style, at the sound of the music (play something devilish, such as "The Monster Mash"). Kids must use up the whole roll, avoiding the head and wrapping arms separately from the torso.

2. Once wrapped, the mummy hops to a finish line, holding his arms to his sides and trying not to break any of the wrapping.

3. Award the winning team, reverse partners' roles and then start again with fresh rolls of crepe paper.

72

Musical Tombstones

This works like musical chairs.

Supplies:

1. Grocery bags 2. Black marker 3. Halloween music

Preparation:

1. To make the chairs look like tombstones, take a paper grocery bag and decorate with an epitaph (short text inscribed on a tombstone or plaque).

2. Use a black magic marker and make one for each chair, embellish with a simple saying (see examples below). If the chairs are small, you might need to cut off some of the bottom of the grocery bag before you start so they will fit nicely over the chairs.

Directions:

1. Follow the usual rules for musical chairs. 2. When you stop the music, everyone rushes to find a chair. 3. The player left without one is out of the game. 4. The game continues, with you removing a chair at the start of each round,

until one child is left sitting and everyone else is out.

Pop the Balloon

Supplies:

• At least 2 balloons for each child • Enough "treats" for each balloon to have one. Treat ideas: spider or other

types of rings, candy, mini balls, anything small that will fit inside a balloon. Preparation:

1. Add the "treat" inside each balloon and blow up. Tie the balloon.

Directions:

1. Dump all the balloons on the floor and tell the children how MANY they may pop.

2. The children must pop the balloons by sitting on them and bouncing.

Page 75: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

75

Pumpkin Bowling

Supplies:

• 4 two-liter plastic pop bottles • Small round pumpkin

Preparation:

1. Fill each with a little bit of water to add some weight. Directions:

1. Use a small, round pumpkin as the bowling ball. 2. Have the players take turns rolling the pumpkin to try to knock over as many

bottles as possible on each roll. 3. Award points to each player based on the number of bottles knocked over,

and give a prize to the player with the highest number of points at the end of the game.

Alternate Version: Call the game "Poltergeist Pins," play with a regular ball, and turn the bottles into ghosts. To do this, push a 4"-5" Styrofoam ball down over each bottle's cap. (If needed, use a little bit of hot glue to help secure the Styrofoam balls in place.) Drape scraps of white sheet over each bottle and ball. Secure the sheets at the bottlenecks using string. Use a black marker to add eyes to each.

Page 76: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

76

Pumpkin Guessing Game

Supplies:

• 6-7 lb pumpkin • Ball of string (alternate version)

Preparation:

1. Purchase a 6-7 pound pumpkin 2. Weigh it on your bathroom scale, and record the weight

Directions:

1. Ask the children to pick up the pumpkin, guess the weight, and write down their estimates.

2. The child who comes the closest to guessing the actual weight can take home the pumpkin or a mini pumpkin as a prize. (You may want to have a few favors on hand in case more than one child makes a close guess.)

Alternate Version: Modify the above guessing game by having the children guess the circumference of the pumpkin using pieces of string. (You'll need a ball of string and scissors to do this.) One at a time, ask each child to cut a length of string that they believe is the distance around the pumpkin. After everyone has cut a piece of string from the ball, wrap a length of string around the pumpkin and cut it to get the exact circumference. Ask each child to measure his or her string against the string representing the actual circumference, and determine the winner(s).

77

Pumpkin Toss

Supplies:

• Six plastic pumpkins (all the same size) • Three ping pong balls • Prizes • Masking tape

Preparation:

1. Place the pumpkins directly behind one another in a line. 2. Determine a starting line marked with masking tape. 3. Mark the pumpkins one through six.

Directions:

1. Give the player a ping pong to toss into the first pumpkin 2. If the player succeeds provide a prize and have the player continue on to

pumpkin #2, and so forth. Give a prize each time the ball makes it into the next numbered pumpkin. If the player misses a pumpkin, the player’s turn is over and the next person tries.

3. This game can also be played for points by putting a number on each pumpkin—for example, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.

4. Prizes can be stickers, stamps on their hands, books, candy, trinkets, etc. Alternative: Scatter the pumpkins instead of placing them in a straight line. Let each child have three balls to toss. Add up the points at the end of a player’s turn.

78

Smashed Pumpkins Relay Race

Supplies:

• Orange paper • Printed sheet of pumpkins • Printed cryptograms • Pencils for each team • Prizes

Preparation:

1. Print pumpkin pages on orange paper. 2. Print cryptogram for each team. To make it easier for younger children, fill

in some letters to help complete the puzzle. 3. Cut each pumpkin out and then in ½ (using a different cut zigzag cut on each

one.) 4. Write on one half of the pumpkin a letter and then on the other half write

the corresponding number. Review the cryptogram answer key for the letter-number match up. Create pumpkins with letters that are not in the solution puzzle.

5. To create your own cryptogram visit http://www.kidzone.ws/puzzles/cryptogram/.

6. Each team should have their own separate set of pumpkins. 7. Place the halves on one end of the hall in separate piles for each team. 8. Place the cryptograms at the other end where the students will line up.

Directions:

1. Form two teams and line them at one end of the hall. On the start of go have them race down to the end of the hall to collect only one ½ pumpkin.

2. They must then race back with the ½ pumpkin allowing the next person in line to run and find another ½.

3. For more challenge only allow each team to have 6 halves at one time to try matching. Another challenge to only allow them to run to drop off a half or to run to pick up and bring back a half.

4. As a team they must match the zigzag cuts to complete a letter-number match.

5. Once they found a match they can start decoding their message. 6. The first team that is successful decoding their message wins.

Spider Relay Race

Scurry across the floor using "spider legs" in this takeoff on crab races. Supplies:

• Old pairs of tights • Stuffing (old clothes, rags) • String • Buckle

Preparation:

1. Make a set of four spider legs for each team. For one set, stuff two old pairs of tights and tie them together with the string. Attach them to a belt with string or Velcro.

Directions:

1. Use a big open area or gym. 2. Divide your partiers into two teams and mark a finish line about 20 yards off

for big kids, closer for those under age seven. The first player on each team straps a set of legs around her waist so that two legs will dangle on each side of her when she's in the classic crab position.

3. On "Go!" the first players scurry on all fours (well, eights), with their bellies to the sky, to the finish line and back.

4. Each team then helps its player take off the spider legs before strapping them onto the next player, who "runs" the race and returns.

5. This continues until the final player from each team comes across the finish line.

TIPS: As a prize, give out rubber flies for each victorious arachnid. Long-haired girls: Beware of stomping on your own hair! The kids can scoot beneath a low-slung, human-made spider's web as they turn at the finish line. The tantalizing flies hang suspended there as well from fishing line.

83

Trick or Treat

Supplies:

• Two plastic pumpkins • Plastic baggies • Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots • Halloween candy and trinkets • Paper

Preparation:

1. Fill a plastic pumpkin with typical Halloween goodies and some not so favorite “treats” such as baggies filled with small servings of raw vegetables.

2. Fill another pumpkin with tricks that the kids can choose, such as: “spell you name backwards”; “do ten push-ups”; “crawl on the floor like an alligator”

Directions:

1. A player picks a trick out of the pumpkin. If the player refuses to do the trick, he must choose a treat (or what he thinks is a treat).

2. The next player takes a turn. 3. Once the kids catch on to what some of the treats are they might all opt to

do the tricks.

To really surprise the kids, wrap the treats and tell everyone to wait to open them after all the players have taken turns. Explain that some of the treats might be “trick” treats and some will be goodies

Station Party

Students are given an opportunity to participate in a variety of games and activities which are held at little stations within the classroom. Consider doubling the fun by putting on a party with another teacher. Children can travel from room to room and enjoy twice as many stations! Prize items can be won and then deposited into nearby party bags.

Preparing for the party:

Contact Home Room Volunteer Coordinator for other parent volunteers. Let them know you are needing several (up to 8) volunteers. Ask parent volunteers to donate items that would be suitable for prizes. Give them some examples such as wrapped candy, pencils, stickers, small trinkets, etc. Emphasize you will need lots! Request prizes be sent in multiples of however many students are in the class. Lastly, tell them you will need these donated items at least 2 weeks prior to the party. At that point, you will need to determine which items will be give at which stations. You will also need to take inventory and see if there are enough prizes. Figure it so that every student could visit a station twice and win a prize each time. After the party, tuck away any extra prize items to use for other events throughout the school year. Print pumpkin nametags, one for each of your students. Write their names on front. Then paper-punch a hole in each pumpkin’s stem and thread pieces of yarn through to make necklaces. Students will need to wear these during the party. Each time they visit a station; the volunteer there will stamp their necklace with a rubber stamp. Since each station will have a different stamp, it will be easy to tell if the children have visited all eight.

Page 85: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

85

Supplies:

• Rubber stamp for each station • Printed pumpkin nametags (included)

• Printed station directions (included) • Masking tape

• Brown paper bag for each student, write their name on the front

• Printed shapes for Halloween Hop (included)

• Music (Halloween hop) • Container for shapes (Halloween hop)

• Prizes • 3 ice cream buckets (Bucket Bash)

• Orange construction paper (Bucket Bash) • 3 Orange two-liter pop bottle (Pumpkin Switch)

• 1 heavy paper plate (Jack-O’-Lantern) • Broom (Witch’s Broom Sweep)

• Watch with a second hand (Witch’s Broom Sweep)

• 5 bean bags (3 for Bucket Bash, 2 for Jack-O’-Lantern)

• Tagboard (Witch’s Hat) • 1 Clear two-liter pop bottle (Witch’s Hat)

• Plastic pumpkin container (Spider Toss) • Bag of small spider rings (Spider Toss)

Directions:

Explain that there will be a number of stations throughout the room. At each station there will be a worker who will tell them about he game or activity. When they are finished at a station they will need to have their pumpkin necklace stamped. Tell them that each time they receive a prize they must immediately walk over to their party back and place the prize inside. Emphasize that they will to be allowed to eat any of the candy or play with any prizes during the party. Explain that students can visit the stations in any order they wish. But make it clear that they cannot visit a station more than twice. The Stations:

If you have done all of the possible preparation for the stations ahead of time, they should only take about 20 minutes to setup before the party actually takes. Print the directions for all the stations and tape them onto index cards. That way, when volunteer chooses a station, you simply hand them the corresponding card to read. This will save you the time of explaining everything. In addition to any materials mentioned, each station will keep a supply of prize items and a rubber stamp.

Spider Toss Game Preparation: buy a large, reasonably priced, plastic pumpkin and a bag of small spider rings. Make a masking tape line on the floor. Cut the handle off the pumpkin and place it 6’ from the tapeline.

How it works: the student stands behind the tapeline and tries three times to toss a spider ring into the pumpkin. If she is successful, she gets to keep the ring. If she was not able to do so, she can go to the end of the line and try again.

Jack-O’-Lantern Game Preparation: use markers to draw a jack-o’-lantern face on both sides of a heavy paper plate. Paper punch a hole near the edge and thread a long piece of string through it. Then hang the plate from the ceiling. About 6’ away, make a masking tape line on the floor. You will also need two beanbags. How it works: the child is instructed to stand behind the tapeline. He then throws the beanbags (one at a time), and tries to hit the hanging plate. If the student does this, they win a prize item. If they were unsuccessful, they can go to the end of the line and try again.

Pumpkin Switch Game Preparation: cut the bottom portions off of three orange two-liter pop bottles to create bowls. Turn them upside down and use a black permanent marker to draw an identical jack-o’-lantern face on each. How it works: a student watches as the volunteer places a prize item under one of the three bowls. The child continues watching as the volunteer quickly moves the bowls around for about five seconds. Then she tries to guess which bowl the prize item is under. If they guess incorrectly, they can go to the end o the line and try again.

Bucket Bash Game Preparation: cover three ice cream buckets with orange construction paper. Then use a black marker to draw a different pumpkin face on each. Put a masking tape line onto the floor. Then make a second masking tape line about 7’ away. Place the bucket about 6” in front of the second tape lien. You will also need to have three beanbags. How it works: the volunteer places one prize item in each bucket and puts the covers on tightly. The student stands behind the first tapeline and throws three beanbags (one at a time) in an attempt to hit the buckets and pushes them across the second tapeline. The child gets to keep whatever prizes are inside the winning buckets. If he did not manage to get any of the buckets over the line, he can go tot the end of the line and try again.

Witch’s Broom Sweep Game Preparation: use masking tape to make large letter W onto the floor. You will need a broom and a watch with a second hand. How it works: the child chooses a prize item and places it on the start of the W. Then he is given the broom. The child is allowed 10 seconds to try to “sweep” their prize along the entire W and off the end. If they do this, they get to keep the prize. If they do not, they can go to the end of the line and try again if they wish.

Witch’s Hat Game Preparation: Cut three ring shapes from the top, clear portion of a two-liter pop bottle. Construct witch’s hat from heavy back tagboard. Make it so the hole in the brim is the same size as the rings. Use tape to secure the brim of the hat onto a table or the floor. Also use masking tape to make a line about 6’ from the hat. How it works: the child stands behind the line and is given the three rings. She then tries to toss them onto the point of the hat. If she does this with any or all of the rings, she wins a prize. If she misses, she can go to the end of the line and try again.

Halloween Hop Preparation: Print and laminate Halloween shapes. Trim the excess lamination material and tape the shapes onto the floor in a circle. Print the miniature size shapes and place in a container. You will need a way to play Halloween music. How it works: up to six children can play at once. They start by standing outside the circle of Halloween shapes. When the volunteer starts the music, the students should hop around the circle of shapes in clockwise order. (To preserve the shapes, don’t let the children hop on them.) When the volunteer stops the music, each child stands behind one shape. The volunteer then draws a shape from the container. The child that is standing behind the same shape is the winner and receives a prize item. All other participates can go to the end of the line and try again if they wish.

Pasta Skeleton Craft

This pasta skeleton is easily made from a few different types of pasta and dried beans glued to a piece of black construction paper. Supplies:

1. A few different types of pasta and dried beans, like spaghetti, macaroni, tiny tube pasta, long tube pasta, wagon wheels, long spirals, tiny shells

2. Black construction paper 3. White glue 4. A white crayon to write your name (or label the bones)

Preparation:

1. Count appropriate pasta and beans for each skeleton. (You can use just about any type of pasta (or dried beans) for the bones.) The following is only a suggestion:

A wagon wheel is nice for the head. Spaghetti makes good fingers and toes. Tiny tubes or dried lentils are good as vertebrae in the spine. Long tubes make collarbones. Longer tubes or long spirals make good arm and leg bones. Small shells or dried white beans are nice for the kneecaps, wrists and ankles. Two dried lima beans make good hips.

2. Trace Mr. Bones outline on black construction paper. Directions:

1. The student can glue the pasta bones along the lines using white glue. Have the kids arrange the pasta on the paper before gluing (to make sure that they have room for the whole body on the piece of paper).

2. Allow the paper to lay flat for it to dry. Optional: Label the major bones using a white crayon.

Shrieking Shakers

They don’t really make noise, but you might! Pick a favorite Halloween toy to place inside your one-of-a-kind shaker to make it as scary or as silly as you like. Supplies:

• Small plastic Halloween toys such as pumpkins, skeletons, mummies, etc. • Small plastic spiders • Glass jar and lid • Plastic yogurt or margarine lid • Scissors • Hot-glue gun and glue sticks • Thumbtacks • Glycerin (found in craft stores) • Glitter, sequins, and confetti • Food coloring • Paper towel • Feather boa or ribbon to skirt around the bottom of jar

Preparation:

1. Pre heat glue gun 2. Organize items in piles for students to choose from 3. Setup a desk for

• Collecting desired supplies • Cutting lids and tacking down toy • Filling jar with water and Glycerin and adding Food coloring • Sealing jars

Directions:

1. Ask students to bring a clear jar with lid and a plastic lid from home, a few weeks prior to the party. This will allow you to determine how many jars and lids you will need to contribute.

2. Select a toy to place inside the jar. Trace the top of the jar lid onto a plastic lid and cut out the circle. Anchor the base of the toy to the plastic circle by first hot-gluing it and pushing thumbtacks up through the underside of the circle and into the base of the toy. Place the plastic lid inside the jar lid.

Page 109: Crestridge Halloween Room Party Guidebook

109

3. Fill the jar halfway with water and the remainder with glycerin, being sure to allow enough space to accommodate the toy. Sprinkle glitter, sequins and confetti in any combination into the filled jar. If you’d like to color the jar green, place a half-drop each of green and yellow food coloring into the water-glycerin mix. If you’d like to make the water blue, simply add a half-drop of blue into the mix.

4. Screw the jar lid tightly in place. Invert it onto a paper towel to test for leaks. Hot-glue around the edge of the lid and wrap the feather boa or ribbon around the glue. Trim away excess. Glue a plastic spider to the top of the jar if desired.
