DESCRIPTION
Business Situation The portal was not merely an alternative for the brick and mortal stores or establishing an online presence. There were some structural challenges faced by the client in provisioning the platform with the ability of a store owner to set-up a shop in the portal anywhere/anytime irrespective of the geographical location because the Portal was positioned as ‘International’ serving the global community. Another daunting challenge was setting up multi-mall and multi-shops, meaning there will be many malls within the portal and each mall can house as many shops based on products/categories. Thus the streamlining too proved to be a pain point. Ofcourse, the aspects of cross-sell. Most importantly, the effective promotion in converting a lead into a customer was another tough spot. With online shopping, comes the complexity of payment gateway integration and also handling multiple currencies. Besides, empowering the shop-owners to self-manage their shops was a key requirement.TRANSCRIPT
Business Situation
The portal was not merely an alternative for the brick and mortal stores that used
to exist. Some of the challenges that the client faced include
How can clients across the globe shop and how do you create shops being
anywhere on the map. The geography cannot and should not be a hindrance.
Location will not be a limitation.
How can you build a multi-store portal since most of the sites are single shops
selling multiple products!
How can you make the portal sell products and services with different
currencies?
How can you engage a casual visitor and convert him to a potential customer?
What would the architecture, design, customer user experience, time to
market, total cost of ownership?
Solution Approach
Hand drawn sketches turned out to be the initial set of specs for the client.
Compassites employed an open source ecommerce framework after vetting the
key requirements of increasing growth and increasing ROI. The time spent on
research proved invaluable since we bumped into unknown territories in this e-
commerce space that were not known till then!
Some of the functionalities developed for the new portal were truly novel. The
"Dressing Room" for instance had a sketch pad where the customer could try out
designs and post the same to friends using social media in order to get a second
opinion. Likewise, the "Photography" section was stitched with the site as a
service, and packaged to offer and address various requirements like planning the
calendar and reserving slots. The offshoot of Photography was the ‘Look Book’
