Yoga workshop for Noble International School studentsIt was a day of peace and calm to

the students at Noble Interna-tional School under the guidance

of the internationally acclaimed Yoga master Guru Karan Singh.

The school has arranged a Yoga

workshop for selected children in association with Indian Sports Cen-tre, Doha.

It was an enlightening gather-ing for the students and teachers of NIS.

The event was inaugurated by the school principal, Shibu Abdul Rasheed, . While addressing the stu-dents, he highlighted the positive aspects of Yoga and its impact in modern life.

Yoga Guru Karan Singh taught our children the importance of Yoga and the need for meditation.

“When our mind is at rest, and when we have control over our body, it is a beautiful feeling” says Yoga Guru Karan Singh to all the keen students.

The workshop went on for more

than an hour where children were taught different ‘aasanas’ and var-ious methods of meditation.

The children were more than happy to learn and understand Yoga from a globally accepted Yoga master. They willfully followed the art of meditation to put their mind & soul to rest, as instructed by their mentor. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks from the Vice-Principal, Robin K Jose, where he graciously thanked Karan Singh for his esteemed presence in the NIS campus.

International Day of Peace was celebrated on September 25 in all three campuses of Bhavan’s

Public School with an aim to inspirit the students to make a pos-itive difference in the world.

As part of the theme, the stu-dents and the teachers in charge spoke about secularism and the importance of peace on Earth.

In the senior campus, Master Gautham M gave an informative speech pointing to the contempo-rary issues and the problems faced by the refugees.

Students also staged a the-matic role play and skit. A special dance programme was performed to depict this year’s theme; “ Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for all.

Students from junior classes presented a melodious song. The kids personified as Mother Teresa

and Dalai Lama conveyed a puis-sant message to be the brand ambassadors of peace.

Also collage making, craft work was conducted in the cam-puses, addressing the theme

‘peace’ under the guidance of Arts

Faculty. Principal M P Philip reminded

the students the need of the day and said that “peace starts with a smile”.

He also said that all efforts to spread humanity must be consid-

ered supremely divine. Headmistress Shailaja

KrishnaKumar and Asha Shiju stressed the importance of respect, safety and dignity for everyone and also instigated a positive vibe in the campuses by a powerful message to set a tone of unity and peace wherever we are.

Academic coordinators, Activ-ity coordinators and teachers graced the occasion.

China’s latest online star uses everyday office equipment to cook pan-cakes, hot pot and even

flame-grilled fish at her desk. The 23-year-old, who goes by

the name of “Ms Yeah”, began uploading her quirky cooking vid-eos to Weibo, China’s microblogging service, in January.

The viral sensation quickly became known for using office sup-plies not just to cook, but create cooking contraptions at her desk.

The idea of cooking in an office does not sound like a viable option, but Ms Yeah manages to make it happen by using the things she finds laying around her office.

Some of her most popular clips take her audience on a journey as she cooks popcorn with a cut-up soda can and a tea candle; makes hotpot, a popular Sichuan dish, in an aluminium foil bowl; and steams dumplings using a clothes steamer. Ms Yeah often uses widely availa-ble office supplies to aid her in her making office meals.

Previously, the light bulbs in her

office have doubled as ovens and charcoal grills, and computer mon-itors have become pans and water dispensers doubling as pots. Ms Yeah uses her creativity and inge-nuity, utilizing everything in her

environment for the sake of her culinary pursuits.

The hot press of the clothing iron against the thin cuts of beef must have wafted a delicious aroma around the room, a

usual occurrence in Ms Yeah’s office nowadays. Though many tune in for Ms Yeah’s creativity and inge-nuity in making her cooking utensils and recipes, she has also delved into the beauty blogger sphere.

COVER STORYTHURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2017 05Ms Yeah has taken a step fur-

ther with her creative use in household objects, by taking food and repurposing it as makeup. In a recent video, she creates makeup by using flour, cocoa powder, water and sesame oil. In place of the ever-popular Beauty Blender, she uses jumbo marshmallows and applies her bake with some more rice flour.

With even more cocoa powder, she is not only able to do her eye-brows, but also able to apply her eye shadow. By snipping off her co-worker’s hair, and with the aid of a binder clip and a lighter, she is then able to make faux eyelashes for herself.

With chili oil and juice from crushed dragon fruit, she gives her-self some bright pink lip-gloss and blush. Even more hilariously, she repurposed some Oreos and paper-clips as her newest on trend earrings.

Though she doesn’t speak or explicitly crack jokes in her videos, Ms Yeah’s innate sense of comic timing is stunning. It helps that she’s naturally deadpan, and that her col-leagues sit unperturbed beside her absurd stunts, like frying crepes on her CPU.

She found new fans outside her home country when she posted vid-eos on YouTube, which is blocked in mainland China.

“I think I spend all of my spare time watching her videos,” Kenny Dilian, a fan from Indonesia, said.

In one video, Ms Yeah uses an iron to grill strips of beef on her desk. In another, she cooks hot pot inside a water dispenser.

Dilian said his favourite video shows her dismantling a computer

processing unit and using the metal shell with a candle inside to cook a Chinese pancake.

“She always has something new in the video. Sometimes it makes he laugh so hard,” he said.

Dilian was among a group of hardcore fans who lined up to meet Ms. Yeah at the FanFest, where she

performed a live show.Aside from finding creative

ways to cook using office equip-ment, Ms Yeah also insists the videos have no narration.

“Everyone watches the video in silence, so foodies from all over the world can understand what we are doing,” she said.

]The Little Kingdom organised Fruit Salad Day yesterday. Students brought cut fruits

from home and their teacher helped them understand the importance of fruits in t daily diet. She also advised them to avoid junk food. She later requested all the students to put their fruits into the bowl and she added cream and other ingredi-ents and mixed them to make fruit salad.

It came out to be tasty fruit salad. It was of course the result of a combined effort of the whole class. They learned how sharing and teamwork can result in beautiful outcome in life.

Then they tasted the fruit of their labour and shared it with the teachers and other staff members. They all went home with the taste of fruit salad and joy of sharing.

FOODTHURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2017 07Bonnie S Benwick The Washington Post

When you’re cooking for two and neither of you are particularly picky

eaters, you have the luxury of stretching the repertoire every now and then. I recommend these crepes, which are quite doable on a weeknight. The bat-ter , made with white whole-wheat flour, needs only a 15-minute rest.

The filling is no more than interesting mushrooms browned in a pan and topped with a sprin-kling of grated Swiss and lots of fresh herbs. Here, we sliced meaty king trumpet mushrooms lengthwise into thin planks, and used some lovely chanterelles from the farmers market.

If you don’t make crepes or pancakes that often, you might not be familiar with the “first one” phenomenon: Chances are quite good that the initial crepe will be too thick or rubbery, or be of lesser quality than all that follow. I usually keep that one on the bottom of the pile, or snack on it while I am cooking - in the inter-est of checking the seasoning level of the batter, of course.

2 to 3 servings, HealthyServe with sliced tomatoes.Ingredients1 cup flourSalt, Freshly ground black

pepper1 large egg1 cup low-fat milk8 ounces king trumpet or

chanterelle mushrooms, or a combination of both

Handful fresh herbs, plus more for garnish

One 2-ounce block Emmen-thaler cheese

2 tablespoons grapeseed or olive oil

1 teaspoon unsalted butter, or more as needed

Sour cream or creme fraîche, for garnish (optional)

StepsPlace the flour in a mixing

bowl, then add a good pinch each of salt and pepper. Make a well at the center, then crack in the egg and pour in half the milk. Use a whisk to gradually incorporate the seasoned flour, slowly add-ing the remaining milk to form a thin, lump-free batter. Let it sit at room temperature for 15 min-utes. The yield is about 2 cups.

Meanwhile, wipe off or rinse/dry the mushrooms and trim as needed. Cut the large ones into thin slices. Coarsely chop the herbs and transfer to a medium bowl, reserving a small bit for garnish, then use the large-holed sides of a box grater to grate the

cheese into the same bowl.Heat a large skillet over

medium-high heat. Once it’s quite hot, add the oil and swirl to coat. Add the mushrooms and cook, without disturbing them, for 5 minutes. Turn over and cook for 3 minutes; at this point, the mushrooms should be siz-zling and have picked up some colour. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then toss in the herb-cheese mixture. As soon as the cheese begins to melt, turn off the heat.

Heat an 8-inch crepe pan or medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1/2 tea-spoon of the butter. Once it has melted, ladle in about 1/3 cup of the batter and quickly swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. Cook for about 1 minute, or until the crepe looks dry on the edges. Turn it over and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, then transfer to a plate

and cover loosely with aluminum foil. (The first crepe is typically the thickest/worst one you’ll make.) Repeat with the butter, as needed - you may not need to add it more than once - and bat-ter to form 4 or 5 more crepes, stacking them on the same plate and keeping them covered as you go.

Place a crepe on each plate. Spoon some of the mushroom-cheese mixture in the middle of each one and fold over. Repeat with the remaining crepes and filling.

Garnish with the remaining chopped herbs and a dollop of the sour cream or creme fraîche, if using. Serve warm.

HEALTH THURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 201708

Lack of sleep can lead to child’s weight gainLisa Rapaport Reuters

Children who don’t get enough sleep may be more likely to become over-

weight or obese than kids who typically get enough rest, a Dan-ish study suggests.

At the start of the study, parents recorded sleep diaries for their chil-dren over 7 days, noting how much total rest kids got and whether the children took naps, slept through the night, had difficulty falling asleep or waking up, or suffered from other sleep issues. Parents also completed food diaries.

The children who got the least amount of nighttime sleep on average were more likely to become overweight during the following 1.3 years, the study found. Kids who became over-weight were also more likely to consume a lot of sugary foods and drinks.

“Our study showed that chil-dren with the highest sleep variability consumed higher amounts of added sugars and sug-ary beverages but lower amounts of fruits and vegetables compared with children with lower sleep variability,” said lead study author Anna Rangan of the University of

Sydney.“This suggests that children

who have less variable sleep dura-tion, or better sleep routines, have better dietary quality than those who may have less stringent sleep routines,” Rangan said by email.

While plenty of previous research has linked inadequate sleep to obesity in both children and adults, less is known about toddlers and young children with a high risk of obesity because of their own birth weight or parents’ weight and income, researchers note in the International Journal of Obesity.

At age 2, kids should get 11 to

14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps, according to guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. From age 3 to 5, kids need 10 to 13 hours of sleep including naps, and starting at age 6 doctors recommend 9 to 12 hours of sleep.

At the start of the study, the children were getting an average of 10.7 hours of sleep a night, though this ranged from 8.8 hours to 12.5 hours.

Children who slept more than 10.7 hours on average had signif-icantly less weight gain than kids who slept less than 10.4 hours, the study found.

Being empathetic canbe hazardous to healthJennifer Breheny Wallace The Washington Post

Your husband was just passed over for a promotion, and he’s depressed. Your friend’s

breast cancer has returned. As a supportive spouse and friend, you feel their pain. Growing research suggests there’s a cost to all that caring.

Empathy - the ability to tune into and share another person’s emotion from their perspective - plays a crucial role in bringing people together. It’s the joy you feel at a friend’s wedding or the pain you experience when you see some-one suffering.

It’s an essential ingredient for building intimacy in relationships, says Robin Stern, associate direc-tor of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. “When someone feels seen and heard by you,” she says,

“they begin to trust you.”But this seemly positive emo-

tion can also have a downside, particularly if someone gets so con-sumed by another’s feelings that they neglect their own feelings and needs. Stern says those who regu-larly prioritise others’ emotions over

their own are more susceptible to experiencing anxiety or low-level depression.

“When we think of empathy fatigue, we usually think about those in helping professions, like nurses, doctors, social workers - but all of us are often in the role of help-ers or caretakers, whether it’s caring for a sick parent, a child or a friend during a difficult time,” says Jamil Zaki, an assistant professor of psychology at Stanford Univer-sity. “Being supportive of those we care about is among our most cher-ished and important roles,” Zaki says, “but it’s also one that’s fraught: We want to be there for someone but not lose ourselves.”

But it wasn’t all good news. The more empathic the parent, the researchers found, the more likely that person was to be experiencing chronic low-grade inflammation. The researchers speculate, “Parents who readily engage with the strug-gles and perspectives of others may leave themselves vulnerable to additional burdens, expending physiological resources in order to better help others.”

Is there a healthier way to empathise?

Psychologists describe empa-thy in three ways: You can think it, feel it or be moved by it, Zaki says.

With cognitive empathy, you understand what someone else is thinking and feeling, as when you relate to a character in a novel or take someone’s perspective during a business negotiation.

With emotional empathy, you actually put yourself in someone else’s shoes and feel their emotion. This is the type of response that, left

unchecked, can lead to caretaker burnout, says Zaki.

And then there’s compassion-ate empathy, where you feel concern about another’s suffering, but from more of a distance and with a desire to help the person in need.

Which perspective we take when responding to someone else’s suffering can affect our own health and well-being.

Four books that could inspire you to writeAbby Mcganney Nolan The Washington Post

Four new books celebrate the unlimited pos-sibilities of books, old and new. Two that focus on libraries show the power of col-lecting and protecting the past. The other

two explore what inspired present-day authors when they were kids and how they pursued their craft. Any and all of these books could inspire you to write down your own ideas and stories.

1) “Books! Books! Books! Explore the Amazing Collection of the British Library” By Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom. Ages 8 to 12.

The British Library has 400 miles of shelves, 15 floors (five below the ground) and 150 million items, so this slim, dynamically illustrated book can only hint at what it holds and preserves.

Highlights include the library’s oldest book (dat-ing from the 7th century), its biggest (a gigantic atlas that requires six people to lift), as well as the original manuscripts of such famous books as

“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” An early set of William Shakespeare’s plays is

so valuable that it’s kept deep underground in a bombproof room.

2) “Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library” By Carole Boston Weatherford. Illustrated by Eric Velasquez. Ages 9 to 12.

Arturo Schomburg (1874-1938) was a treasure hunter who was interested in historical knowl-edge rather than money and jewels.

He searched for the important but little-known contributions that people of African heritage had made to the world.

Carole Boston Weatherford’s descriptions and Eric Velasquez’s illustrations make clear how tire-lessly Schomburg searched for books, pamphlets and art that could “tell our stories, proclaim our glories.”

They also provide intriguing mini-portraits of the people (such as Benjamin Banneker and Phil-lis Wheatley) who inspired Schomburg. Although he died about 80 years ago, his library in New York City is a national historic landmark, as big and bus-tling as ever.

3) “Our Story Begins: Your Favorite Authors and Illustrators Share Fun, Inspiring, and Occa-sionally Ridiculous Things They Wrote and Drew as Kids”. Edited by Elissa Brent Weissman. Ages 8 to 12.

Is it hard to imagine that the authors and illus-trators you admire ever struggle with their work?

This fun book goes back to where all of these children’s book legends started - a time when they were kids trying to get their ideas onto paper.

The 26 entries, each of which features a child-hood photograph, include the pages of a chapter book Marla Frazee wrote and illustrated when she

was in third grade, a book created by Grace Lin when she was in mid-dle school, and a poem written by 12-year-old Kwame Alexander to his adored mother, who, of course, framed it.

4) “Writing Radar: Using Your Journal to Snoop Out and Craft Great Stories” By Jack Gantos. Ages 9 to 12.

With humour and swift pacing, the author of the “Joey Pigza” books and “Dead End in Norvelt” spills all of his writing secrets about making stories out of everyday life.

The key, he says, is writing ideas down as you have them and then giving them structure and emotion. He shares his early stories and explains how he developed into the observant author he has become. It will probably make you want to read Gantos’s stories as well as to create your own.

BOLLYWOODTHURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2017 11'Umeed' director upset with CBFCIANS

Rajat S Mukherjee, who is making his directorial debut with "Umeed", is

upset with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for asking him to remove "inspired by real incidents" claim from the film.

He feels CBFC remains "irresponsible" even after the appointment of lyricist Prasoon Joshi as its new chairman.

The film, which was earlier supposed to release on September 22, is based on unethical drug trials in India

" I t ' s a b s o l u t e l y ridiculousness how we have been asked to remove 'inspired by real incidents' from the film. I have spent years in research on this subject. We will not release the film with ‘A' certificate which conveys truth about pharma companies," Mukherjee said in a statement released recently.

"What's upsetting us is that CBFC is still irresponsible even after Prasoon Joshi took the charge," Mukherjee added.

Told through the perspective of its protagonist Mia (Pallavi Das), "Umeed" shows how pharma giants use celebrities to give "unethical clinical trials" a mask of vaccination programmes.

Besides Pallavi, the film also features Milind Gunaji, Dalip Tahil, Freddy Daruwala and Shishir Sharma.

Bollywood remembers Yash Chopra on 85th birthdayIANS

“Legendary”, “king of romance” and “a part-ner-in-crime” are some

terms which have been used for late filmmaker Yash Chopra by Bol-lywood celebrities like Rakesh Roshan, Karan Johar and Anushka Sharma, who remembered him on his 85th birthday yesterday.

Yash Chopra, who made his directorial debut with a melodrama

“Dhool Ka Phool” in 1959, rose to prominence after his successful film “Waqt”.

In 1971, he founded his own production company, Yash Raj Films (YRF), and launched it with

“Daag”. Some of his most iconic films are “Deewar”, “Kabhie Kab-hie” and “Trishul”.

He also directed the

commercially successful cult film “Chandni”, “Lamhe” and “Darr” . He announced his retirement after “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” in 2012.

He bagged several film awards, including six National Film Awards and the Government of India hon-oured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contributions to Indian cinema.

British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) presented him with a life-time membership for his contribution to films, making him the first Indian to receive the hon-our. The filmmaker died of dengue fever in October 2012.

Here is what the celebrities tweeted on his birth anniversary:

Rakesh Roshan: The legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra ji’s birth anniversary. You are within all of

us and will remain forever. Karan Johar: A father to me...a

hero to me.... a man I miss every-day in my life.

Anupam Kher: Happy Birthday Yashji. You were more than just my director or a friend. An anchor too. Your support meant ‘All Is Well’. Miss you and your warm hugs.

Anushka Sharma: You will always live on in our hearts and the hearts of so many lives your mov-ies touched. Happy Birthday Yashji.

Parineeti Chopra: Yashji you were the best part of working at YRF and my paratha-punjabi-part-ner-in-crime! Learnt the value of humility from you.

Vivek Oberoi: An iconic cine-matic genius, had the warmth of a Punjabi grandfather who would want to pamper you like no other. We all sorely miss you.

Cardi B snags top Billboard spot from Taylor SwiftThe Washington Post

It had been nearly two decades since a solo female rapper topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. And then Cardi B burst onto the scene. The Bronx native’s breakout anthem “Bodak

Yellow (Money Moves)” secured the No. 1 spot on the latest chart, Billboard announced on Mon-day. The last time a female rapper held that spot without the assistance of any other credited art-ists was Lauryn Hill in 1998 with “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

Cardi B posted a video on Monday thanking her fans, radio hosts and others for playing and downloading her song. “I loveee you all each and everybody contributed for this,” she wrote on Instagram. “Ya made it happen for me !!!!! The number 1 WAY!!”

Aside from Hill, the only female rappers to top the Billboard Hot 100 had songs with other musicians: Lil’ Kim (“Lady Marmalade”); Shawnna (“Stand Up”); and Iggy Azalea (“Fancy”).

Cardi B’s ascent also means she toppled

Taylor Swift, who had occupied the No. 1 spot for three weeks with “Look What You Made Me Do.” Although Swift broke plenty of streaming records with that much-buzzed single, her reign was more short-lived than expected.

Cardi B once worked as an exotic dancer - a past she raps about on her breakout single: “I

don’t dance now, I make money moves.” She then gained notoriety through viral videos on Vine and Instagram and even appeared on the VH1 reality show “Love & Hip Hop.”

“Bodak Yellow” dropped in early summer and became one of the year’s most streamed songs. Cardi B plans to release her first studio album next month; she already has put out two mix tapes. Her unapologetic, unfiltered and outra-geous presence, both on her tracks and on social media, has a down-to-earth quality that has brought her legions of fans.

Even Janet Jackson has been dancing along to “Bodak Yellow” while on tour.

“It feels amazing and it’s overwhelming. It’s like, it fills me up with lot of happiness and a lot of joy,” Cardi B told the Associated Press about her song’s success. “It’s just, like, unbelievable. I’ve been through so many things and I worked so hard for me to be here, and it’s like I’m finally here getting what I wanted, (and getting) the respect from other artists and from everybody.”

“Game of Thrones” actors Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie, who enjoyed an on-screen

romance in the HBO television hit series, announced their engagement in Britain’s Times newspaper on Wednesday.

Harrington, who plays Jon Snow in the fantasy drama, met Leslie, who played Ygritte, in 2011 while filming the second season of the Emmy-winning

show in Iceland.“If you’re already attracted to someone, and then

they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love,” Harrington told Vogue magazine in an interview last year.

The British duo, both 30, had only a brief on-screen romance before Leslie’s character, Ygritte, died in the arms of Snow in season four. Her final words, “You know nothing, Jon Snow,” have became one of the show’s most famous lines.

Apple’s new macOS has a security flawHayley Tsukayama The Washington Post

Apple has acknowledged a reported security flaw with its latest free macOS update, High Sierra, which was released for down-load on Monday.

As outlined at Forbes, security researcher Patrick Wardle published evidence that programmes not approved by Apple may be able to pick up passwords in a Mac’s “keychain” - the place that stores passwords you’ve asked Apple to remember for you. There’s no evidence that any-one has exploited this flaw, but it is a bit of a bruise on the launch.

The problem can hit if you download software from places other than the Mac App Store - a practice that your Mac will repeatedly warn you against if you try to install third-party software. If you don’t down-load software that isn’t from the Mac App Store, you should be fine.

In a statement, Apple addressed the report, saying that users should pay attention to the warnings they get from their computers. “We encour-age users to download software only from trusted sources like the Mac App Store, and to pay careful attention to security dialogs that macOS presents,” the statement said.

Wardle told Forbes that he expects Apple will create a patch for the exploit, but Apple did not provide details on when or if that will happen.

Twitter to test doubling tweet lengthReuters

The days of Twitter Inc limit-ing messages to 140 characters, a signature of the

social network since its launch in 2006, may be numbered.

Twitter said that it would begin a test with a random sample of users allowing them to send tweets that are as long as 280 characters, double the existing cap, in most languages around the world.

The San Francisco-based com-pany has stood by its short messages as a defining character-istic - like chirps from a bird, which is the company logo - even as users found ways around the limit, such as posting photos of text.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Twitter said its emphasis on brev-ity would never change but that it had been wondering whether peo-ple could express themselves easily enough, hurting the service’s popularity.

“Trying to cram your thoughts into a Tweet - we’ve all been there, and it’s a pain,” Twitter project manager Aliza Rosen and senior software engineer Ikuhiro Ihara said in the post.

The employees acknowledged some users may have an “emo-tional attachment” to the current limit.

News reports in January 2016 said that Twitter was running internal tests for longer tweets and considering a limit as high as 10,000 characters.

Though Twitter is ubiquitous in media because of frequent use by US President Donald Trump and many celebrities, the company has struggled financially. For the

second quarter, it reported a loss of $116m and zero growth in the number of users, at 328 million people. Facebook Inc has 2 billion users.

A higher character limit was inspired by how people use Twit-ter when writing in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, the com-pany said.

Characters in those languages can often express more than Roman characters can, meaning those users already, in effect, have a higher limit. They also use Twit-ter more often.

“In all markets, when people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting,” the two employ-ees wrote.

The test of 280 characters will run for an unspecified number of weeks in all languages except Chi-nese, Japanese and Korean, Twitter said.

Shedding light on mysteri-ous formations resembling giant knife blades of ice on

Pluto, scientists have found that the “bladed terrain” is made almost entirely of methane ice, and likely formed as a specific kind of erosion wore away the surfaces, leaving dramatic crests and sharp divides.

Among the many surprises that NASA’s New Horizons mis-sion discovered when it flew past that distant world in July 2015, the strange “bladed terrain” had remained a mystery.

The blades are related to Plu-to’s complex climate and geological history, according to the study.

A team led by New Horizons

team member Jeffrey Moore, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Cali-fornia’s Silicon Valley, determined that formation of the bladed terrain begins with meth-ane freezing out of the atmosphere at extreme altitudes on Pluto, in the same way frost freezes on the ground on Earth, or even in your freezer.

“When we realised that bladed terrain consists of tall deposits of methane ice, we asked ourselves why it forms all of these ridges, as opposed to just being big blobs of ice on the ground,” said Moore.

“It turns out that Pluto under-goes climate variation and sometimes, when Pluto is a little warmer, the methane ice begins to basically ‘evaporate’ away.”
