2 2017–2018 Annual Report

Mission Challenge Aspen is dedicated to impacting lives through year-round adaptive experiences for individuals faced with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Challenge Aspen creates life-changing opportunities by encouraging participation in activities designed to redefine limits, recognize abilities, and transfer newfound courage to everyday life.

“…You know, you don’t always have to be standing up when you’re skiing, and Challenge Aspen showed me that it can be just as much fun – or perhaps even more so - sitting in a bi[ski] or a mono[ski] than standing up. Think about it, you actually touch snow! How serene do you get when you really feel the stuff for the first time?”

—Sam, REC Participant

A Message from our CEO

Dear Friends,

Challenge Aspen’s ability to do life-changing work is directly accredited to your generosity. Your support gives individuals of all ages with any cognitive and/or physical disability, including veterans and members of our incredible local community, an opportunity to discover adventure, confidence, self-esteem, and courage.

On behalf of the Challenge Aspen staff, Board of Directors, participants, and volunteers, thank you for making our 2017/2018 year the most accomplished yet in creating possibilities for people with disabilities!

With immense gratitude,

Jeff J. HauserCEO

Challenge Aspen Recreational, Cultural, Educational (REC) Programs

REC offers individuals and groups with physical and/or cognitive disabilities diverse opportunities to experience all that the Roaring Fork Valley has to offer. The wide array of REC activities are designed to boost confidence and self-esteem while broadening horizons for all ages. Additionally, Challenge Aspen Custom Adventures offers customized vacation packages and daily adventures for any individual with a disability or family with an ability challenged member.

“My participation in Challenge Aspen has been instrumental in my recovery. I began to take lessons with Challenge Aspen last year, about a year and a half after the spinal cord injury that changed my life. Before I was injured, skiing was a very important part of my life and so, needless to say, getting back on skis made me feel whole again. Challenge Aspen’s phenomenal instructional staff retaught me how to navigate the slopes, giving me confidence while also improving my strength and balance. Skiing has been some of the best physical therapy for me and I would not have been able to get back to skiing without the support of Challenge Aspen” —Nate, REC Participant

Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO)

CAMO provides adaptive recreation and wellness experiences for military personnel with service-related disabilities. CAMO offers participants the opportunity to reconnect with outdoor recreation activities that can positively affect their engagement in civilian life. Programs are offered free of charge to active duty, veterans, and spouses/partners.

“Thank you for helping me find my PEACE when life seemed to be crumbling around me. Words cannot articulate how much spending this time with my wife meant to both of us. I can’t express how much the guides and volunteers made the entire trip and to know some of them volunteered their time makes it all that much more special. I think what you guys are doing are (sic) saving lives and marriages. And that’s not some cliché... tell your sponsors you guys are literally saving lives.” —John, MAJ (Ret), Retired Special Agent, CAMO Fly Fishing Retreat Participant

“I have never thought that a 5-day retreat in Aspen could have such an impact in my life. Overall the CAMO retreat is something I would remember and cherish. It helped me realize a skill that I did not think was still possible. It helped me gain a new confidence in my abilities. I met a lot of great individuals and it provided me with new coping and relaxing skills through breathing and relaxation exercises. With that, I would like to thank all who made this experience possible. Thank you for giving me an avenue to have a different and better outlook on life. More power to all of you.” — Geoffrey, CAMO Participant
