VIOLENCE
VIOLENCE: Any thought, word, or action that does not honor and respect the inherent dignity and worthiness of every living being
NONVIOLENCE
Nonviolence is a way of life in which one attempts to live less violently today than yesterday by choosing to honorand respect the inherent dignity and worthiness of everyliving being
Types & LevelsPathway – same goal/different methods
Mutually Exclusive – different goals/work together
Distributive – not enough to go around
Value Conflict – different values/ different vision
LEVELSNormal - everyday level of disagreement. Healthy normal conflict Learn how to disagree
Pervasive – Yelling. No listening. Finger pointing. 3rd party needed – refocus on issue
Overt – Out of control anger. Physical. Weapons. Separate people. Cool down period
Conflicts cannot be resolved at pervasive or overt level.Must return to normal level for resolution/reconciliation
Principles:1.Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people2. Beloved Community is the framework for the future3. Attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil4. Accept suffering without retaliation for the sake of the cause5. Avoid internal violence of the spirit as well as external violence6. The universe is on the side of justice.
