• Over 50% of the world’s population reside in cities, and by 2050, two our of three persons will share the urban space. How new design and innovation changes urban life and enables stakeholders in a community to co-create a happy city?

How to realise the Happy City Lab?

Happy City Lab aims to showcase how new design and innovation change urban life and enable stakeholders in a community to co-create a happy city. Under the theme of Urbanovation, HKTDC calls for creative proposals that explore and experiment inspiring ideas about creating some happy and enjoyable innovations for smart liveable city and how these happy innovations makes urban living more pleasurable and interesting. Designers are invited to explore new design thinking for innovating architectural design concepts, re-designing the form, materials, shape, size, function of various urban space on land and sea and daily lives objects. Unveiling new possibilities for our urban city is highly encouraged.

Submission

(1) Each designer will submit a NEW creative brief and develop a NEW design work under the theme of “Happy City Lab” to illustrate the new possibilities of a creative neighbourhood in a city.

(2) Size of the creative work should within 1m(W) x 1m(L) x 1.5m (H).

(3) Please advise the format of the work

(e.g. installation, interactive display, design product….you name it).

(4) No more than 100 words about you and a profile picture.

(5) A quote about how a happy city should be.

• PLEASE INDICATE YOUR PRELIMIARY THOUGHT ON FORMAT, MATERIAL(S) AND SIZE ON OR BEFORE 6 OCTOBER 2017.

• THE ACTUAL DESIGN WORK SHOULD BE READY FOR SUBMISSION ON OR BEFORE 1 DECEMBER 2017.

The Road Shows Creative works developed under Happy City Lab will be showcased to the public in the following events:

“Happy City Lab” will be publicised via HKTDC’s digital channels, in addition to coverage of the project’s media partners, supporting organisations and designers’ network.

Important Dates

6 Oct 2017

1st Submission – Preliminary thought on Size, Material and Format Participating designers are required to (i) Indicate the preliminary thought on size, material and format (ii) Designer’s profile in Chinese (max 100 words) and English (max 80 words)

21 Oct 2017 1st Submission: Design Proposal (i) a concept brief in Chinese (max. 100 words) and English (max 150 words) (ii) 3-5 sketches/photos to illustrate the design concept

Oct – Nov 2017 Participating designers will produce his/her creative display and work closely with the HKTDC project team on exhibition set up

Mid – Nov 2017 2nd Submission: Photos of Creative Work Provide 3-5 images of the creative work

6 Dec 2017 Move in to HKCEC for DesignInspire

7-9 Dec 2017 Exhibition at HKTDC DesignInspire

Early 2018 Roadshow arrangement to be finalised in early 2018

* The above timeframe is for reference only and may revise to fit the HKIA’s working schedule.

Important Remarks

(i) Creativity and originality sought! Designers will submit a NEW design proposal based on the project theme. Any submission of past creative work, plagiarism or any infringement of others’ IP is strictly forbidden. The application will not be considered if it does not comply with any of the above requirement and guideline.

(ii) Submitted information will be displayed and featured in the marketing collaterals for promotion purpose. The final arrangement would be subject to the final decision of the organisers. An collaboration agreement will be signed between the organisers and the participating designers.

(iii) The HKTDC will provide a material cost of $4,500 on actual incurred basis to the participating designer to produce the creative installation in DesignInspire and HKTDC road shows.

(iv) With a practical need to exhibit and transport the creative works in HKTDC roadshow(s), participating designers are strongly advised to avoid using breakable and fragile materials for the works, and wrap the works in advance to avoid damage during transportation.

(v) The participating designers shall comply with the rules and regulations of the HKCEC and other venues.

(vi) Please note the organisers and the campaign venue(s) reserve the right and absolute discretion to accept the application and to interpret, alter and amend any of the above terms and to issue any additional rules and information at any times as deemed appropriate.
