Vocabulary Strategies for the Content Areas

On the Front

On the Backhttp://www.masternewmedia.org/images/focus-lens-Robin-Good_id2324691_size459.jpgTerms included origin, variable, analyze, hypothesis, priority, adjacent, contribute, etc. They were all Tier 2 function words. The purpose was to dig deeply into some of these words, so that we could discover how much we assume students already know about them.1

Share both sides of your flashcard with your neighbor.Talk about your flashcard. Ask the questions below.http://www.how-to-kiss.us/talking.jpgDiscussion Prompt: Why did you choose that picture to represent your word? When could I use your word?

Good Connections(NOUN) does (VERB)(NOUN) is (ADJECTIVE)These words have similar meanings because. These words are opposites or almost opposites because. These words both deal with ______.Bad ConnectionsThey both start with. They are both nounsThey both end with.Theyre from the same unitThis connection activity promoted lots of discussion in the group. This is an activity that I have used in ELA co-teaching classes for many years with great results. It really gets students talking and thinking about how words (and sentences) work.3Vocabulary Strategies for the Content AreasAdapted from a presentation by Lynn Mallory & Allison TeagueKannapolis Middle SchoolKannapolis, N.C.After slide 11, you will find the presentation that Allison and I created for the TESOL conference in 2010. At the end of the slide there is a website that we created that gives details on all these strategies. If you are in need of strategies, feel free to try some of these.4Three Tiers of Words Tier One

Tier Two

Tier Three

High Frequency WordsAcademic Vocabulary Domain-specific Vocabulary 5A student's maximum level of reading comprehension is determined by his or her knowledge of words. This word knowledge allows students to comprehend text. As the teacher, you can explicitly teach word meanings to improve comprehension. There are three tiers of vocabulary: CLICK high frequency words the, and, of, you, that, etc. CLICK Academic vocabulary words like explain, discuss, illustrate, extrapolate, convey, and synthesize; access to these words is essential to comprehension and production of writing in all content areas. CLICK and discipline-specific words words such as peninsula, photosynthesis, and hyperbole. These words are most important for their subject-specific uses.

5Tier 1Tier 2Tier 3DescriptionBasic words that most children know before entering schoolWords that appear frequently in texts and for which students already have conceptual understandingUncommon words that are typically associated with a specific domain or content areaExamplesclock, baby, happycoincidence, fortunate, insist, adaptchrysalis, peninsula, decimal (Beck, McKeown, Kucan, 2002) Three Tiers of VocabularyThis chart appears on the handout from February.6How do I determine that a word is TIER 2?

WordIs this a generally useful word?Does the word relate to other words and ideas that students know or have been learning? Is the word useful in helping students understand text?If you answer yes to all three questions, it is a tier 2 word. If not, it is probably a tier 3 word.7This chart is also on the handout. It helps us really narrow down which words we need to teach.Teaching ChallengeIn content areas, I am responsible for Tier 3 vocabulary. But Tier 2 words are crucial to understanding the directions or concepts. I cant teach it all!

Discuss this at your table. What are ways you already support students in Tier 2 acquisition during science, social studies, math, etc? What we learned from each other is that we arent really supporting our students with those Tier 2 words in the content area. Although there are so many content words they need to learn, examining which Tier 2 words are necessary for success is important too.8Dissecting a textUse the text for your grade level to complete the following activities.

Circle the Tier 3 content words students need to know in order to understand the text.Underline the Tier 2 words students need to know in order to understand the text.Choose the 5 most crucial words (either tier). Now choose 1 anchor word that you will pre-teach. Create a 7 step process for that word.

Here are the passages I presented that teachers could choose from. We spent 20 minutes going through these and tagging the words. NOTE: It is counter-productive to mark EVERY content or Tier 2 word. Look for words that are crucial to understanding the article. Preteaching 1-2 words that are important for the meaning of the passage sets the tone for the entire lesson.http://www2.leon.k12.fl.us/lcs_elem_curriculum/Reading%20Passages%20%20Meeting%20Common%20Core%20%205th%20and%206th/1050_weather_air_patterns.pdfhttp://www2.leon.k12.fl.us/lcs_elem_curriculum/Reading%20Passages%20%20Meeting%20Common%20Core%20%205th%20and%206th/6th%20grade%20passage-matter-matter_files.pdfhttp://www.readworks.org/passages/roman-name-game

9DebriefShare your word at your table. How hard was this activity? (scale of 1-10)What was the hardest part? How beneficial was this process for your everyday teaching? (scale of 1-10)

This is the same process I go through whenever I am presenting a text to my students. I never give even my highest students a cold text without featuring at least one word that they can use as their anchor of understanding. 10INSERT LIST OF STRATEGIES HERE

And why you -- yes, you! -- should welcome worms into your classroom or home.In Wisconsin, about 17 percent of the trash that goes to the landfill is food waste. That's a lot of wasted food, and a lot of wasted landfill space. It's food that could be fed to worms, which will graciously turn it into useful compost with just a little help from you. By setting up a vermicomposting (worm composting) system, you won't have to throw away as much waste -- an important consideration, especially if your school or family are charged by the garbage bag, can or weight for waste disposal. You'll also help extend the life of the landfill used by your community. Keeping worms is easy, enjoyable and educational and it doesn't take much time. When you do it well, vermicomposting is clean and odorless, and there's no need for fancy equipment. Anyone maintaining a worm bin will be fascinated by the way worms work. You may even find yourself thinking of them as pets. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/earth/recycle/wormcomp.htm
