In 2016 we purchased our Mercedes from a very fastidious per-son who was the second owner of this car. The original owners were the LeCornu family of Adelaide who bought it new in 1985 from B.E.A. Motors Pty Ltd of Adelaide. The car has only done 150,000kms since new. It gives us much pleasure in maintaining the car to keep it in good condition. We have recently joined PADARC, attending the last rally and some weekend runs which we have enjoyed. The 1985 Mercedes appears to be ahead of its time ie : climate controlled air conditioning, power seats, cruise control, auto ad-justable headlights and central locking. It also has the original Becker auto radio and the original unopened 1st aid kit. The car is very comfortable as a cruising car. We look forward to many more weekend runs in the future.

Hello and welcome members, it’s been another busy month behind the scenes, our run to the Crystal Brook Show was very well attended, there were 26 vehicles in attendance, only 2 from outside clubs. One being the very rare 1957 Goliath wagon owned and restored by the Birrels from Laura, the other being Ivan Venning in his recently purchased 1928 model A ford tourer.
The weather was not all that friendly at times, very cold wind and some light showers, but great to see a brilliant turnout.
On another note the Center Radiators display day for this year has been cancelled. We do however have the Pink Parade for Cancer on Sept 14th, leaving the clubrooms at 9:30 to line up in the car park off Ellen Street near the new toilets.
Also worth a reminder is the changes to joining and re-newing memberships, with the first point of contact being the club secretary who then passes over the paperwork to the membership secretary to complete and then to the treasurer to pay subs and be issued a receipt and mem-bership card.
Also we have some members recovering from illnesses being Glad Curnow and Colin Graham who is out and about, we wish you all a speedy recovery.
Another upcoming event for next month is the Smelter’s Picnic and then the Melrose and Jamestown shows.
Until next time, happy cruising.

Report for Crystal Brook Show Saturday 17th August 2018
A dark and stormy few days lead up to the show and it was looking in doubt for David and I, but the day arrived and the rain was holding off so we bit the bullet and decided to go. We are so glad we did it was a fantastic day, although the passing clouds threatened it didn’t rain but the temperature never made it above 20 degrees.
28 cars were in our display – next to the ute muster back on the oval which is great as we are back in the middle of all the action of the show.
I hope I haven’t missed anyone out (but you know I am only
human).
Ivan Venning – Model A
David and Kerrie-Lea Scarman – 1977 HZ Kingswood
Riley Jansen and Natalie Scarman – BMW
Terry Dunning – 1960 Chevy New Yorker

And a couple of cars from N.A.R.C.
As anyone can see it was a fantastic turnout for such a cold wintery day. It was great to see some new members come along and show of their beauties. Hoping this is going to be an example of future runs for the club.

Editors Comments I just wanted to bring up the issue of printing this newsletter, as you may or may not know it takes a fair bit of effort to produce this newsletter for all of you with not only writing articles but doing the layout and all the printing, stuffing of envelopes and finally the mail out or the distribution to the members. Because of this I am proposing that we email out Crank Talk to all members who want it.
If you want an email copy you will not only be one of the first to see it but it will also be in col-our and you can print it out or enlarge it on your screens to read it better. I know that some of you get it through our Facebook or Web Page, but now you can have it delivered straight to your computer or smart phone.
If you wish to take us up on this offer please send and email to
[email protected] with the topic as Crank Talk Email.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF THE DRIVER PASSES OUT AT THE WHEEL
The thing that makes a sudden medical emergency so scary is that you never know when it could happen.
Every scenario will be different and may require a unique response, but in an emergency involv-ing the driver, the goal is always to stop the vehicle as soon as possible, preferably off the road and without hitting anyone or anything.
Prevention is key in these situations so if the driver’s not feeling well, don’t start the journey.
If you’re already travelling and you notice the driver has started to sweat or wheeze, it may be a sign they’re feeling discomfort.
Act on this if you can by getting them to pull over themselves.
If the driver does lose consciousness while they’re behind the wheel, it’s important to stay calm.
Put the car into neutral if it’s still moving (shift the gear stick to N in an automatic car, otherwise just push it out of gear).
This will stop the vehicle speeding up even if the driver’s foot is still on the accelerator.
Don’t switch the engine off, as this will deactivate the power steering and brakes.
Instead, turn on the hazard lights and try to guide the vehicle towards the side of the road us-ing the steering wheel, and let it roll to a halt.
Depending on the scenario, you may need to slow the car down manually.
Reaching for the footbrake yourself may be difficult, so gently apply the handbrake to gradually slow the vehicle.
Don’t pull at it, as this may cause you to lose control of the car. If the vehicle has a button-controlled handbrake, it will automatically slow to a halt when you press it.
Only turn the ignition off and call emergency services once the vehicle has stopped. It needs to be remembered these are often very complex scenarios and advice may change based on the situation, vehicle type and road environment.

Touring USA 1930 in reverse Charles Creighton and James Hargis spent 42 days on a round trip from New York to Los Angeles in 1930 using only reverse gear. The two men drove in a Ford Model A roadster, which was left running the en-tire time. After 42 days on the road, James B. Hargis and his mechanic, Charles Creighton, re-turned to New York City
and laid claim to a new automobile record, The Times re-ported. "Throughout this ordeal, Hargis and Creighton trav-elled night and day at an average speed of 10 mph, sleep-ing in a specially constructed seat in their roadster," The Times said. "However, in Los Angeles, the boys gave them-selves a 48-hour rest while their motor chugged on while crowds gathered around the car, which was making such a unique endurance record." "Before the boys left New York, setting out for the 11,587km trip”, the newspaper said, the Texas Co., maker of the Texaco products used on the run, removed the low, intermediate and high gears from the transmission. The drivers have been making do with the rear view mirror and the views over the trunk. The en-gine has been kept running throughout the 42 days. The first reverse parking camera will appear 26 years lat-er. Instagram is many, many decades away so they haven’t stopped to take pictures. Kym Greenfield.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
PADARC are happy to welcome to the club this month the following
enthusiasts.
Local & well known to our city & district are Wayne & Katalin White. Wayne has for many years had an interest & ownership of stationary engines. They also have an original & very nicely kept 1962 Valiant S Series & we are pleased it will join our ranks. Local also are Jack & Kerry Lucivero & the proud owners of a 1971 fully restored Ford XY Falcon GT. Residing at Crystal Brook & having in his owner-ship a 1964 Ford Compact Fairlane is Kyal Kirk. This Ford vehicle is in original condition & great to have in our classic vehicle listings. Lachlan Nottle lives in picturesque Melrose. He owns a 1978 HZ Holden Kingswood , good to give the Fords a little bit of competition. Welcome all, & hope your time spent with us is rewarding & ex-tremely pleasant.
One evening after his honeymoon was over Tom was working on his Harley Davison motorcycle in the garage. His new wife was standing there by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said, "Honey, I've just been thinking, now that we are married, maybe it's time you quit spending so much of your time out here in your garage. You probably should also consider selling your Harley and all your welding equip-ment along with your gun collection, and your fishing gear, and the boat and lose all those stupid model airplanes, plus dump that vintage hot rod sports car, and your home brewing equipment..." Tom got a horrified look on his face. She said, "Darling, what's wrong?" He replied, "There for a minute, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife." "Ex-wife!?" she screamed, "YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!" Tom replied, “I wasn't.."
Subject: TELEPHONE SURVEY
Last month, a world-wide telephone survey was conducted by the UN.
The only question asked was:-
"Would you please give your honest opinion about possible solutions
to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"
The survey was a complete failure because:-
In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
In the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant.
And in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Great Britain everyone hung up as soon as they heard a foreign accent.
