Welcome to our first Newsletter for the 2021 school year. We most certainly had an unexpected start to the year. Despite school opening a week later than planned, and the fact that staff and parents were required to wear face masks, we had a great start to the school year. Everyone complied with the COVID post-lockdown requirements, students were generally excited to be back at school and staff were well prepared. Staff used the extra week for ongoing planning and online professional learning. By the time the 8th of February came about, I know that we were all delighted to see the students walk through the gate on that first official day.
Last Friday, 12th February, was Student Census day. The number of enrolments on that day are those that define our funding, through the Student Centred Funding Model, for this year. We have a total of 407 students.
School Development Days
Each year, public schools have six School Development Days over the year for the purpose of whole school planning and professional learning. Two of these days fall prior to school starting, one after school finishes, leaving three days that happen during the terms.
There was excellent participation from staff on the School Development Days which took place on 28 th and 29th January. Staff were involved in many housekeeping activities, developing a vision for 2021, direction for this year, diabetes training, an introduction to the EdCompanion data tool, team building, OSH training, finance procedures and Apple Classrooms. Our vision for 2021 is about High Expectations, basically summed up as:
The other School Development Days this year are:
Friday 26th February, Friday 4th June, Friday 29 October, Friday 17th December

SCHOOL PAYMENTS
CONNECT
We use Connect as our main communication method with parents. If
you are having any difficulty with this process please contact Carissa
Carroll.
[email protected] Tel: 6206 2200
PAYMENT OPTIONS The QkR! App enables you to complete and sign a combined permission and health form, and to make a secure payment using a smart phone or tablet using a credit/debit card. The App is available 24/7 and removes the need to return forms or cash to the school. In addition, a new flexible ‘Product’ has been added to the Qkr! App that allows you to make payment for past activities or odd amounts. You choose the amount to pay and add a comment to identify the payment. This enables you to adjust a payment to take into account money already paid to the school and held as ‘unallocated credit’. No signature is required for this product, which is named ‘Overdue Payments – Previous Years‘. Instructions on how to download the App are available here: QkR! App EFTPOS is available at the front office, however it is preferable to use QkR! or direct deposit to: Internet Banking (returning forms to front office): Payee: Craigie Heights Primary School BSB: 066 040 Account: 1990 2511 Reference: Child’s Name/s and Year or Room # and brief description A receipt will only be issued for payments over $50 unless requested. Students with High Needs Medical Conditions
We have a number of students at our school whose medical condition means that their immunity against
illnesses may be compromised, or if and when they get sick, may need hospital care.
If your child is unwell, please carefully consider if they need to stay at home. It will also be important to
notify the school if your child becomes unwell with chickenpox or measles or are in contact with anyone
who has these or shingles.
General hygiene practices are also important. Please discuss these with your child, including washing their
hands with soap: after they’ve been to the toilet, if they sneeze into their hands etc.
Thank you for your understanding and anticipated cooperation with this matter. Please call the school if
you have any questions or concerns.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PBS CORNER
Craigie Heights is a PBS school!
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a framework for creating safe and
orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the
social-emotional outcomes for students.
It is a proactive approach that relies on research based practices,
including developing clear behavioural expectations, teaching these
expectations, acknowledging appropriate behaviour, consistently
correcting inappropriate behaviour, and using behavioural data to
systematically solve problems.
Here are some the PBS related things you will see at Craigie...

NAIDOC Theme 2021
Bunuru (February and March)
Bunuru is represented by the colour mirda-yoont (orange) and is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Host easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons. Traditionally, this was a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and sea food made up the major parts of the Noongar people’s diet during Bunuru. Bunuru is a time of the white flowers with many in full bloom, including jarrah, marri and gosht gums. Craigie Heights PS AFLW Team Have you dreamed of playing AFLW or being part of team? CHPS is proud to announce that we have just
launched our inaugural AFLW program in 2021. It is a girls only program for year 3-6, where girls receive
specialised coaching, access to AFLW players and exciting opportunities to connect with local clubs.
There is also evidence to show that athletes that play multi-sports before the age of 12, make great
athletes in their chosen sport because they have developed transferrable skills and a passion for sport in
general.
Girls will have opportunities to develop the following:
football skills (kicking, marking, handballing, ground balls)
learn the rules
improve their fitness and general overall health and wellbeing
have access to current AFLW role models
develop skills in team work, communication, leadership, cooperation
experience a team environment where they feel a strong sense of belonging, acceptance and
connection which may foster self confidence
most importantly have FUN!!!!
Students will participate in a one-hour training session each week in term 1 (commencing week 3).
Congratulations to all the girls that have been selected. We look forward to our training sessions with you
and see you grow and flourish throughout the program.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Swap It is a healthy lunchbox program develop by dietitians. Swap It aims to support parents and carers
to swap what is packed in the lunchbox from sometimes foods to everyday foods. By improving
lunchboxes, we can make a huge difference to a child’s daily food intake. By swapping a sometimes
food for an everyday food we are setting children up for the best possible mental and behavioural
performance at school and at home.
In coming weeks we will look at:
Tips to increase vegetables
Tips to keep food safe
Tips to save time
Tips to save money
Tips for fussy eaters
Parking on Verges
Consent must be obtained from the owner or
occupier of land (or property) before a person
may drive, park, or stand a vehicle on the road
verge adjacent to that land. If consent has not
been provided by the owners or occupier, they
may report details of the offending vehicle to the
City of Joondalup Rangers.
Always be aware of children and their
unpredictable movements.
Adhere, at all times, to the 40km per hour
speed limit around the school.
Parents/carers are not permitted to enter the
staff carpark unless they are visiting the
dentist or have a current ACROD sticker.
U turns on Spinaway Street are very
dangerous. As you leave the Kiss & Drive
area, continue up Spinaway Street.
Allow enough time to get your child to and
from school safely.
Try to use nearby parking facilities such as
the church car park or parks, then walk a
short distance to school.
Plan your trip so you arrive on the school
side of the road.

Kiss & Drive zones allow parents/carers to

to be used for parking. Children are to exit
their cars on the kerb side. The Kiss & Drive
zones enable the traffic to flow smoothly.

Bike Safety
It is fantastic that so many of
our families choose to walk or ride their
bike/scooter to school. Although the bike
racks are locked during the day, there are
periods of time when they are open. We
strongly advise families to add to the security
by using a lock to secure their bikes
and scooters to the railings. Students need
to walk their bicycles and scooters onto
and off the school grounds. This is for
the safety of both the pedestrians and
the bicycle/scooter users.
It is vital that students wear a helmet. One of
our expected behaviours at Craigie Heights is
to wear a helmet when on a bike/scooter.
