HARMONY AWARD WINNERS—WEEK 8 TERM 2

Congratulations to the following students:

Year 1 Room 4 : Damien Year 6 Room 14 : Isabel

Thank you to the Maritime Museum for donating passes for our Award Winners.

The school office is a very busy place, especially around drop-off and pick-up

times. We thank everyone for their patience during these times. We

understand that on occasion, there are unforeseen circumstances, and a

parent may need to get a message to their child during the school day. We

will endeavour to do so, but there may be times when this may not be

possible. We strongly recommend that all parents give their child this

important message - If a parent does not arrive to pick them up from school,

make your way to the office and we will help.

GARDENS

Stuart, our gardener, along with Mrs Moore and the students from Room 10, have been planting some water saving, native plants around the school. This is a great way to care for our environment and we thank them all for being responsible.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT On Thursday 13th June we held a Parent Information Session regarding PBS at our school. We had a good turnout and thank those who were able to come along. Miss Hodge, Leader of the PBS Tier 1 Team, took the group through what PBS is and what it looks like in our school. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a framework for safe and orderly learning environments in schools, while improving the social-emotional outcomes for students. This is complemented by our PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies, social and emotional curriculum. It is a proactive approach that relies on research based practices, including developing clear behavioural expectations, acknowledging positive behaviour, consistently correcting inappropriate behaviour, and using behavioural data to systematically solve problems. Our Behaviour Matrix defines our expected behaviours at Craigie Heights Primary School and our Referral Process identifies the steps followed when behaviour is inappropriate.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT PBS CORNER DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Continued...

If a child at school is having difficulty with reading, we implement strategies to help them learn the skills of reading. This is the same with behaviour. If a student is having difficulty with choosing the right behaviours, we support them to make better choices. We often use a restorative approach when there has been conflict. Restorative practice is a strategy that seeks to repair relationships that have been damaged, and at school it is also about students re-engaging in the classroom. Questions may include: What happened? What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who has been affected? What needs to happen to make things right? The questions used can be used in many situations, not just at school. You may want to try them at home one time. Amanda Robinson – Deputy Principal

BIKE / SCOOTER SECURITY

It is fantastic that so many of our families choose to walk or ride their bike/scooter to school. Although the bike racks are locked during the day, there are periods of time when they are open.

We strongly advise families to add to the security by using a lock to secure their bikes and scooters to the railings.

CONGRATULATIONS KAYLA

Congratulations to Kayla from Year 6 who has also been selected to be part of the Calisthenics Association of Western Australia’s State Team. Apologies to Kayla for not recognising her achievement along-side Mia in the last newsletter, unfortunately Kayla’s notification went astray. Kayla will also be part of the Junior Team (ages 11-13) competing in the National Championships which are this year being held at Kingsway Christian College in July.

Congratulations on your achievement and good luck and best wishes for the competition. We look forward to finding out how the team does.

COLD AND FLU SEASON

There have been a couple of cases of Influenza reported to the school. This serves as a timely reminder to please keep your child at home if they are unwell. If you have any concerns about Influenza, symptoms or treatment, please use the link below to the Department of Health's fact sheet:

SCIENCE UPDATE

This Term we've been learning about Earth & Space. The Year 2's have been learning about water and investigating how to make it clean by filtering using different materials. The Year 5's & 6's have been learning about the size of the Solar system. We scaled down our entire solar system by 34.7 billion to make it fit onto our oval. We learnt that the distances are huge, and the planets quite small in comparison! The Year 3's have been learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon and investigating how we get day and night. Denise Brown - Science Teacher

NESPRESSO RECYCLING

Did you know that Nespresso pods cannot be put in your regular recycling bin?

If you are looking for somewhere to recycle your Nespresso aluminium pods, please drop them into Room 3. They will be picked up by Nespresso and recycled responsibly.

Help needed We’re applying for a grant to get our vegetable garden beds up and running and would love to hear from any parents who have knowledge or skills in the set up and maintenance of a sustainable garden. Please email the P&C at : [email protected] if you are willing to provide some information to help us apply for the grant (due early August).

Parent parking is available in the car park in front of the Early Childhood Area. This area is not a ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. Provision has been made for two disabled parking bays in this car park. Please do not park in these bays as we have families requiring these spaces. Never use the staff car park. "Kiss and Drop" - If you wish to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area, there is a zone specifically for this purpose on Spinaway Street. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in this area. Additional parent parking is kindly offered at the Craigie Baptist Church car park beside the school, which is a short walk to the school. We are so lucky to have this additional parking so please respect everything on their site. The school oval will also be opened for parking for assemblies and school events. Parking on the verges around the school is extremely dangerous and puts our students at risk. Unfortunately a number of parents continue to park on our neighbours verges or drive-ways and this has been reported to the Joondalup Council for their action.
