Western Cape craft is a wide expression of designer objects that appeal to various market segments. The CCDI, set up as a Section 21 company, is a key driver in helping to develop the craft and design sector in the province. It was set up by the Province and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2001, and now has about 1400 craft enterprises on its database. The organisation has grown from two staff operating from a small office on the CPUT campus, to a dynamic operation with a core staff of 20, occupying three floors of a Cape Town east city building. The Institute provides support in areas of creativity, design and innovation; enterprise development and training; and market access and development. This helps craft producers to access the appropriate markets, while stimulating individual and sector growth in the Western Cape. There will also be increasing emphasis on the role of design in problem solving, innovation, and making technology more accessible. Creative industries are particularly important in the Western Cape province, which boasts relatively strong design resources. There are also diverse cultural influences, proximity to export infrastructure (export agents, port, airport) and large tourism and domestic markets eager for unique retail and cultural experiences. The shops reflected in this map stock a minimum of 40-100% Western Cape craft products.
