The hosts, Bluecoat school, went head to head with Cowley debang on subjects such as ‘Megacies are bad for the developing world’ and ‘Extreme views should not be given a plaorm’ in front of a panel of high profile judges, including local MEP candidate for Labour Julie Ward, columnist and broadcaster Will Batchelor, Annie Gosling from ‘Business in the Community’ and Pauline Hadaway from ‘Belfast Exposed’. Cowley triumphed in both debates and the team are now through to the Debang Maers North West and North Wales round, which will take place at Manchester Metropolitan University in March 2014. Sixth Form student and member of the College’s senior choir, Cameron Ashall, sang ‘Amazing Grace’ in front on hundreds of people as part of the town’s annual Remembrance Sunday ceremony, held at Victoria Square on Sunday, 10th November. FOOTBALL LEGEND JOINS COWLEY FOR CELEBRATION EVENING On Thursday, 8th November, Cowley celebrated its biggest ever Presentaon Evening with an audience of over 600 people, made up of students, staff, parents, governors and special guest, Gordon Banks, OBE. The evening celebrated the outstanding achievements of students from the last academic year and a number of Special Achievement prizes were awarded, including the introducon of the ‘True Cowleian’ award to acknowledge the tremendous bravery of two Cowley students who saved the lives of two men from a house fire recently. The Guest of Honour, Gordon Banks, OBE, who is most famously known for his part in England’s victorious 1966 World Cup Final, presented cerficates and prizes to students, followed by a personal, humorous and inspiraonal speech. COWLEY STUDENT SINGS AT REMEMBRANCE SERVICE READING PROGRAMME GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH! Accelerated Reader, the innovave online program designed to improve reading skills for students in Year 7 and Year 8, has had a significant impact on raising students’ movaon in reading and in raising their reading levels since its launch 12 months ago. The English department has proudly announced that there is a new word millionaire in Year 8: Dominic Wills with 1,000,592 words read since the beginning of the term. Plus, two word mul-millionaires: Kelly Buckley and Georgia McInroy, both gaining ‘Word Millionaire’ status during the last academic year and having already reached a million words for a second me since September! Not to be outdone, Year 7 also have a ‘Word Millionaire’ - well done Mahew Griffiths! To add to the ‘Word Millionaires’ success, below are some impressive stascs: On Tuesday, 5th November, Years 7 and 8 were quizzed on 172 books and a whopping 322,043 words were read on ONE DAY alone! cowleY’s DeBatinG team ReacH neXt RoUnD in tHe DeBatinG matteRs comPetition

cowleY Becomes a ‘scHool oF DReams’

Honda’s ‘School of Dreams’ team recently visited Cowley International College to provide a two-day ‘thinking skills’ workshop for 9-13 year old pupils and educators, on Thursday, 14th and Friday, 15th November. Pupils from Carr Mill Primary School, Queens Park Primary School and Rivington Primary School also attended the workshop, giving children the chance to get to know peers from other schools and their teachers of the future.

The School of Dreams programme helps young people to understand the importance of pursu-ing their dreams and strategies to help turn their dreams into reality. It was developed by Honda (UK) and a team of independent education experts as part of Honda’s commitment to giving back to the local communities in which it operates.

Mr Dickinson, Assistant Principal, said: “We were delighted to host the School of Dreams. We believe in providing opportunities for students to aim high and achieve their dreams and this initiative enabled students to develop skills and strategies that they can use to help turn their ambitions into reality.”

stUDents sHowcase tHeiR DesiGns to iKea DReam team

Recently, a number of Year 12 AS level Product Design students had the opportunity to present their project designs to Marketing experts at IKEA in Warrington. The students received invaluable brand and packaging guidance from the Marketing experts and will meet the team again in the New Year for further product development help.

science tRiP to lonDonA trip to London has been planned for October half term (27th - 29th October, 2014) and is open to students currently in Year 7 or Year 8 and those in Year 6 who will be joining Cowley next September.

The trip includes visits to The Natural History Museum, Science Museum, London Eye, to two West-End Shows and meals at Planet Hollywood and The Hard Rock Café.

Indoor Christmas Market

OctoberYear 8 and Year 9 Gifted and Talented cohort visited the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry and the BBC TV Centre to look at both traditional and contemporary forms of Art. Year 13 Art students visited Brighton as part of a two-day research and resource gathering exercise for their final projects.

7P enjoyed a visit to the World Museum in Liverpool to enhance their history knowledge. The class spent the morning looking at how Saxons used to live – some of the students even dressed up in Saxon costumes!

November15 Year 11 BTEC students visited Coniston in the Lake District for a fun-packed, confidence and team building day.

47 Year 10 students, accompanied by 13 staff/volunteers, walked to Crank Caverns and back as part of training for their Bronze Duke of Edin-burgh Award that takes place in January 2014.

32 adventurous students spent a weekend at Outward Bound in the Lake District taking part in outdoor activities developed to build on teamwork and communication skills.

Recent tRiPs

Art teacher, Miss Winder and a number of students from Year 8, recently created a ‘Day of the Dead’ themed pop-up boutique selling cakes and jewellery for charity. They raised £74 which they donated to the Diamonds, Jewels and Stars fundraising group.

Students in Year 11 have recently taken part in the Barclays Money skills programme, a UK wide initiative developed to help improve young

people’s financial skills, knowledge and confidence.

The programme aims to help young people make independent and informed decisions about budgeting, spending, saving, investing, using credit, avoiding debt and improve their understanding of the implications of their choices.

FootBall VictoRY FoR cowleY’s U13 GiRls team Cowley’s U13 girls 6-a-side football team recently won the regional round of Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League Schools Tournament.

The girls played some excellent football and of six games, they won five, drew once and didn’t concede a goal for the whole tournament!

The team will play their next match at Liverpool Academy, with the winners of this game going on to represent Liverpool Football Club at the National Round of the tournament which will be played at the Etihad Stadium, the home ground of Manchester City Football Club.
