COWARDLY BAND Silver R•epiblicans Throw 1Ilp the Sponige at the Cleveland CoinvPntoil. THE LAME EXCUSE OFFERED For the tSurrender of Convicitions and Betrayal of the l'eople's Interests. Crieveil.an), June 21.--The assembling of the republican league convention for the third days session was delayed till almost noon by the meetings of olticers of state leagues, the new executive board, the committee on league work. and other organizations engaged in routine business. MIeantime, while the band was entertaining the waiting crowd at Music hall, the leading anti- silver men were in conference on the Patton substitute for the usual set of resolutions. Many anti-silver leaders were not inclined to be bound by the compact of the committee. entered into in order to extracate itself. None were however able to suggest a plan that would prevent a minoritt report and the precepitating of a tigit on the ldoor of the convention. The anti-silver mem- bers of the committee insisted that they had made the best possible choice of two evils. and urged the delegates to stand by the Patton substitute rather than bring about a worse result than its adoption. Aitiough many have gone home, Music hall was tilled when t ov. McAlpine, the new president, called the I convention tn order at 11 o'clock. Chair- man Mc.\l ine had the states called again for c 'minations for secretary. and the name f M. .1. Dowliug was present- ed by M1i .cdesota. and seconded by other states. THE LEWISTOWN IELEPHONE It Will Be Completed to Stanford T'Iday-Now Built to Bower's Ranch. (reat Falls Peopl Listen to a Bag- pipe Performance Sixty-Five Miles Away. Work on the Lewistown telephone line is now rapidly approaching completion. Connection has been made with Ilower Bros. ranch, 65 mile from Great Falls on Surprise creek. A Tunmt:E-: reporter was in the office of the company in this city last night and heard most distinctly ia Iagpipe Iperformance given by Mr. Ca(lvin, an employ, of lHower Bros. on their ranch, i;i miles away. The line is built in a first class mlanner, ats evidenced by the fact that conversation at lowsvr's iplae can bIe heiard fully as distinctly ias on the city telephitei exchange, where thie distance between the speakers are only a few blocks. The wires will be 'rung into Stan- ford today and connection made with that point. The poles are already set into Lewistown and the wires will be strung to that point within ton days. A line is now being built from. Gilt Edge to Lewistown to connect with this line. Thie new telephone line will be a great advantage to business men in this city as it will bring them into much closer business relations with the Judith coun- try, which is naturally tributary to Great salls. The total length of the line is about 12I miles It is built and owned by J. 1'. Armington and S. S. HIotbon, but a stock company will be formed and stock sold to parties along the route to inter- est them in the company as much as poe sible at a later date. A COlRREUCTION. It appears, howaev r, that the Itleirna lay delegation votred unani- IIously for the resolutin. as ilappears from the following letter: To the Ei liU' f T,' Trile., I lv:I.;:t.r. THE LAME EXCUSE OFFERED

For the tSurrender of Convicitions andBetrayal of the l'eople's

    Interests.

Crieveil.an), June 21.--The assemblingof the republican league convention forthe third days session was delayed tillalmost noon by the meetings of olticersof state leagues, the new executiveboard, the committee on league work.and other organizations engaged inroutine business. MIeantime, while theband was entertaining the waitingcrowd at Music hall, the leading anti-silver men were in conference on thePatton substitute for the usual set ofresolutions. Many anti-silver leaderswere not inclined to be bound by thecompact of the committee. entered intoin order to extracate itself. None werehowever able to suggest a plan thatwould prevent a minoritt report and theprecepitating of a tigit on the ldoor ofthe convention. The anti-silver mem-bers of the committee insisted that theyhad made the best possible choice of twoevils. and urged the delegates to standby the Patton substitute rather thanbring about a worse result than itsadoption. Aitiough many have gonehome, Music hall was tilled when t ov.McAlpine, the new president, called the Iconvention tn order at 11 o'clock. Chair-man Mc.\l ine had the states calledagain for c 'minations for secretary. andthe name f M. .1. Dowliug was present-ed by M1i .cdesota. and seconded by otherstates. T'Iday-Now Built to Bower'sRanch.

(reat Falls Peopl Listen to a Bag-pipe Performance Sixty-Five

    Miles Away.

Work on the Lewistown telephone lineis now rapidly approaching completion.Connection has been made with IlowerBros. ranch, 65 mile from Great Falls onSurprise creek. A Tunmt:E-: reporterwas in the office of the company in thiscity last night and heard most distinctlyia Iagpipe Iperformance given by Mr.Ca(lvin, an employ, of lHower Bros. ontheir ranch, i;i miles away. The line isbuilt in a first class mlanner, ats evidencedby the fact that conversation at lowsvr'siplae can bIe heiard fully as distinctly iason the city telephitei exchange, wherethie distance between the speakers areonly a few blocks.

The wires will be 'rung into Stan-ford today and connection made withthat point. The poles are already setinto Lewistown and the wires will bestrung to that point within ton days. Aline is now being built from. Gilt Edgeto Lewistown to connect with this line.

Thie new telephone line will be a greatadvantage to business men in this cityas it will bring them into much closerbusiness relations with the Judith coun-try, which is naturally tributary to Great

salls. The total length of the line is about

12I miles It is built and owned by J.1'. Armington and S. S. HIotbon, but astock company will be formed and stocksold to parties along the route to inter-est them in the company as much as poesible at a later date.
