As we move into the Fall season, it's time to look back over our fabulous Summer driving and activities. What a Summer it has been! From meetings to driving tours to autocrosses to car shows to parades, the list goes on and on. As everyone knows, the Corvette community consists of wonderful people who are united in their love of the car. Our organization is the largest in the area, and we are so fortunate to have members who come from all walks of life and own and drive beautiful cars. Our members have Corvettes from C-1's through C-7's and, believe it or not, some have more than one!

Our annual XXX All Corvette Show on August 26th was a huge success. Shaun Hayes and his team worked hard to make sure that all bases were covered. This is obviously the premiere car show of the year, and one not to be missed by any Corvette enthusiast. The raffle prizes were plentiful, the cars were well prepared, and all models of Corvettes were represented. There were close to 100 Corvettes displayed, and the fellowship was wonderful. In addition to the owners in the audience, there were many motorists driving by who couldn't resist stopping to look at the beautiful cars. Even the weather held out! Another great example of our members coming together to put on an event to be enjoyed by all.

By the time that you read this, our Cascade Loop Tour will be in the rear view mirror, and about 25 Corvettes will have traveled to Eastern Washington and back. This annual event is one not to be missed, and if you did, be sure to include it in your plans for next year. Kevin and Judy Jewell have done an extraordinary job of putting this together. They scouted out the route, chose the hotel and restaurants along the way, and covered all of the details. The weekend ended with our September meeting at Rhodes River Ranch in Arlington.

Plans are well underway for the annual NWACC (Northwest Association of Corvette Clubs) awards banquet on November 3rd at LaQuinta Inn and Suites in Tacoma. This is always an enjoyable evening of delicious food, delightful fellowship, and awards given to the best of the best in local autocrosses and car shows. At $30 PP, it is a bargain for an evening of entertainment. Raffle prizes are great as well.

So, that's all that I have for this month. We still have events planned for the rest of the year, and I look forward to seeing you there. Drive carefully and Save the Wave.....

Cascade Loop Tour - Event Reportby Oran Petersen

Thanks to Kevin and Judy Jewell, our Loop this year was a resounding success. We had almost 30 Corvettes participate, with some stepping in and out throughout the weekend. Most took and enjoyed the optional “hill climb” route into Pateros. The weather

was perfect with the exception of rain on Sunday coming over the pass on Highway 20. We filled Howard’s Inn, taking all of the rooms we could get. Five dogs participated as well, a record number I believe.

Rick Milsow, who initiated the Loops in the ‘90’s, saw us off. He did 9 Loops.

The photo below shows the “departure crowd” in Bothell.

Cover Car - George & Vicki Rinehart’s 2017 Torch Red Z06 Coupe

We have been members since 2011. During that time we have owned 5 Corvettes (crazy). A 2008 convertible, 2012 centennial, 2015 coupe, 2017 grand sport and now a 2017 Z06. How we got the Z06 was that we like autocross. Vicki, last year, said that the Grand Sport with 460 HP, wasn't enough power. She only did a 180 once. I said I could fix that, so 2 months later we found a Z06 with 650 HP, and all the trims I liked. Vicki likes this one and said it's a keeper. It drives nice on the road also.

My uncle, that I was named after, had a new 1971 in silver. I liked it and remember riding in it. I named my license after him in his honor. UNKLGEO. He has since passed away.

We enjoy getting out with it when the weather is decent, (hopefully) doing autocross, tours and some shows, when she is not putting me to work.

Our dog, Snickers, likes to ride in it and on Vicki's motorcycle. He is getting old, at almost 16.

We both like, in addition to autocross and club events, taking the camper out and cruises. We have 2 cruises this year and 2 planned for next year so far.

A Message from Bob Renner

Last month we discussed the ultra-expensive Bugatti Chiron, with its 1500 hp power plant. The Chiron is a baby compared to a top fuel dragster. The latest dragsters have a 500 ci (8.2 liter) engine putting out a supercharged 11,000 hp, and 16,000 lb-ft of torque. Yes, you read that right. I recently read a step by step description of the race procedure. From the time they fire the engine, do the

burn out to heat the tires (and entertain the fans), stage at the starting lights and make the run, less than 100 seconds have elapsed from start to finish. At the starting line, the driver experiences 5 g's acceleration, which can cause a momentary blackout. The driver is still seeing 4 g's at half track and the dragster is already doing almost 300 mph. Of course, at that speed it doesn't take very long to travel the last 500 feet of the race. A normal race will take about 3 seconds with a final top speed of about 330 mph. Even before the driver has reached the finish line, he/she hits the parachute button as the vehicle will have

This has been a difficult year. Thank you for your assistance and understanding. Since Lois passed May 30th I have been trying to recover. It has been most difficult. My friends Alton and Aldene Loe have been meeting me almost daily for the past three months. I am downsizing from a 4,800 square foot home to a 1,250 square foot apt in a nearby retirement community. Getting rid of much of our 57 year accumulation of “stuff” is being accomplished with daily help from many family, neighbors and friends.

My new address:

Our existing home in Sammamish is being listed for sale. I will not have a land line house phone. My cell phone will be continued (425) 281-8872. My email address continues to be [email protected]

My new residence apt is a 2 bedroom and baths plus a den on the 7th floor top of the building with an exterior balcony and mountain view. I plan to move on Tuesday, September 25th

crossed the finish line before the chutes can deploy. When the two parachutes are open, the driver sees as much as 5.5 g's deceleration. The engine is now cooling off after about 1.5 minutes of total running time, while the dragster is towed back to the pits, where the mechanics begin a complete engine rebuild before the next race. No wonder racing can be so expensive. Following a fatal accident in 2008, NHRA changed the race distance for Top Fuel and Funny Cars from the traditional 1,320 feet (1/4 mile) to 1,000 feet in the interest of keeping speeds lower and providing an extra 320 feet after the finish line to slow the car. All the other NHRA classes still race the full quarter mile.

Ferrari has introduced the Portofino for you. The Portofino is claimed to be the starter Ferrari, and the manufacturer anticipates that for most buyers, this will be their first Ferrari. Naturally the pricing is for the masses as well, with a starting price of only $214,533. Did you ever wonder how the manufacturers come up with these prices? At this price point, why not $214,000, $214,500, or even $214,530. But $214,533; what does that extra $3 get me? Even with that extra $3, I suspect that no Portofino will leave the local dealership at less than $250,000. Porsche isn't the only manufacturer with a reputation of super-expensive “mandatory options”. The Portofino has a heavily turbocharged 3.9 liter V8 with a ratings of 591 hp, and 561 ft-lb of torque with a 7 speed dual clutch automatic. Since this is a stripper model and it does not have all wheel drive, Ferrari has limited torque in the first 6 gears which means only 7th gear will get the full 561 ft-lb of torque. Does that make any sense to you? Why not just drop the boost a little bit? The computer is basically doing that for us in all but the top gear anyway, so the claimed top torque is only listed for bragging rights.

At a different price point from Ferrari, Ford has announced that it is going to discontinue almost all sedans from the product offering. Ford will stop selling the Fusion, Taurus, CMax hybrid and Fiesta, even most of the Focus line. Mustang is expected to survive as well as the compact Focus crossover. Under this plan in a very short time, all Fords will be crossovers, SUV's or trucks. Ford says it is simply responding to customer demand as fewer and fewer people buy sedans. We have once again been spoiled by the relatively lower fuel costs and as a result demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles has all but disappeared. It doesn't seem that many years ago that we were paying close to $5/gallon for premium fuel. Yes, much has changed in the intervening years, with fracking adding greatly to our domestic fuel production. Yet somehow, I still expect that some international crisis will once again bring us much higher fuel costs and many buyers will be lamenting their vehicle choice. But I cannot worry about those buyers. I need to worry about my family's financial future. That is why I am working with George Foreman's InventHelp group to patent my new three row pickup with a 3 foot long bed. I predict my invention will dominate the market. Now if I could only get Ford or GM to return my phone calls. Elon, would you and Tesla be interested?

CMCS/XXX All Corvette Show - Event Reportby Shaun Hayes (Show Committee Chair)

We held our annual XXX Show under dry, gray skies on Sunday August 26th with 95 Corvettes on the site. A rain forecast held down attendance, but held off all day. Our sponsor, Evergreen Chevrolet brought over 5 of their latest and greatest for all to admire.

Vendors included Costco, NCM Caravan folks, Chameleon Prints, Hagerty Insurance and Diane Harris Designs.

We had over 50 prizes with a value of over $2000. CMCS Member Ada Hawks donated a beautiful hand-made quilt as a raffle prize. CMCS Member Mike Roylance held a 50/50 raffle for the benefit of our deployed troops.

We awarded 42 Trophies. There were six judged trophies, a club participation award and 35 participant voted awards. Our sponsor Evergreen Chevrolet also sponsored custom hats for each of the 1st Place winners. Each winner will receive a custom hat with their name and the award they received. The hats were designed and produced by our own Bonnie Roylance who also handles apparel for CMCS. See 2018 CMCS/XXX All Corvette Show - Awards on page 16 for a list of award winners.

Many Thanks go to the show Steering Committee Members: Alton Loe (in charge of Trophies, Vendors and Parking), Kevin Wilson (in charge of Raffle prizes, DJ questions), Joe Powell (in charge of Transportation, Evergreen and DJ and announcements), Mike Roylance (In charge at Entry & 50/50, as well as event marketing).

Thanks also go to the many other CMCS members who volunteered by taking on the many tasks needing attention throughout the day (19 volunteered). Special Thanks to Kevin & Judy Jewell for overseeing the Registration Desk and Raffle, Steve Yabroff & Gary Main for tracking pre-registrations and Alton Loe and Mike Roylance for managing show entry and parking. Thanks also to club members who donated raffle prizes and attended with their Corvette. It takes a village (or in this case a Club) to do a successful show like this.

From the white sandy shores of a secret tropical island, I welcome you to October. We have completed a great parade season and again, I want to thank all of you that were involved this year. Without your support it would not have been as much fun.

Seems we blew away the folks at Seafair with our “ALL Corvette” entries. They want us MORE involved next year. We will have more info on this great opportunity for the club. It does sound fun.

Also, if you have one of our CMCS windshield banners, please return it to me at the next meeting, OR give it to a board member if I am not there. PLEASE! Aloha Dudes.

50 Laps Ago: October 1968. President Bruce Kelly opened the monthly meeting after a dinner at the Country Kitchen in Bellevue. Events included a Winery Tour at the Foothills Restaurant and a Halloween Party at the Norselander Restaurant. A tour to Camano Island was canceled. Bruce covered details of the autocross held earlier in the month. There were some misunderstandings about the reimbursement for the free passes

to the Trans Am races as a communications breakdown seemed to exist between CMCS and Larry McCue, General Manager of Seattle International Raceway (SIR). Howard & DeAnn Esping, Stephen Jones, John Viets, Don Schwab, and Donald & Janice Wright became members. Club jackets were available only through retail stores. Alan Green, and Dick & Sue Stanley were accepted as honorary members. Guest speaker Jerry Wallet presented a program after the meeting.40 Laps Ago: October 1978. President Len Hodges opened the monthly meeting following a dinner at the Wharf in Seattle. Ron Whitehead and Steve & Carol Horton became members for a total of 130. The Featherfoot Championship was held at Sears in Overlake. Wendy Hodges volunteered as representative to the Western States Corvette Council (WSCC). Ron McDuffie reported on our practice session at SIR. Len took a vote to determine if the Club was interested in working for a day at SIR. A Halloween Party was held at the Hodges’. Discussions were held on the upcoming post-New Year’s party to be at the Sons of Norway Hall in Bothell next year. Jan Cockrum and Steve Forbes were to work on t-shirts. Frank Olsheski showed some new publications: Keepin Track and Corvette Fever. Val Oaks suggested we host a Northwest Association of Corvette Clubs (NWACC) event next year.30 Laps Ago: October 1988. President Valerie Johansen opened the monthly meeting at the Teo's Mia Roma Restaurant. NWACC held its annual dinner at Kelso, WA. Two prospective members joined the evening festivities but had not yet attended three CMCS events to be eligible for membership. Membership total remained at 101. A newsletter article noted the passing of William L. Mitchell, GM auto designer, at 76. (Mr. Mitchell was instrumental in the designs of the 1963 Corvette Stingray; the 1964 Buick Riviera, the 1937 model Cadillacs and La Salle, the first Cadillac Eldorado, the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro, 1975 Cadillac Seville, and the 1977 Chevrolet Impala.)20 Laps Ago: October 1998. Rich & Lynda Tarsitano's 1991 ZR-1 LT5 coupe graced the cover of the newsletter. President Ben Benninghoff opened the meeting after dinner at the Godfather's Restaurant in Shoreline. Jim & Michelle Fraiser, Chuck & AnnMarie Wellman, and Joel & Cathy Prince became members, bringing the total to 185. CMCS activities for the month. Barbara Jackson contacted the Union Gospel Mission to inquire about CMCS supplying Christmas gifts for needy families with kids. She expected to have more details soon. Oran Petersen attended a class sponsored by the post office for bulk mailings. (Editor’s note: CMCS held a bulk mail permit from November of 1998 to 2013.) Gary Main attended a recent Washington Car Club Council (WCCC) meeting and reported on projects in work, including: cars on your property, and kit cars being licensed to the year of the car rather than when completed. (WCCC was a strong lobby in Olympia, representing the local auto hobbyist to protect our rights.) We were asked to support them and contact our law makers in Olympia to voice our concerns. Ben collected food donations for the Northwest Harvest at all CMCS functions and events up through Thanksgiving.10 Laps Ago: October 2008. Bob & Elaine Kitchen's 2008 Victory Red Z06 was the cover car. President Kevin Jewell opened the monthly meeting at the home of John Henderson & Genie Holt in Bellevue, which was also a costume Halloween Party and dinner. Kayla Main announced membership was 283 including new members Steve Reed and Bryon & Kristine Parrish. Charity head, Marty Cameron, stated the Club mailed 43 boxes of items to the troops overseas. Tim Cox noted that the NWACC Banquet was next month. Lorrie Montgomery stated that Jan Cockrum gave us Corvette themed items left over from previous years, which were then given free to members. John R. Thomas reminded members of the 5-day Labor Day Tour to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY next September. John and Chris vonRavensburg worked this event.5 Laps Ago: October 2013. Tim & Kim Quenzer's Black 2008 Convertible was on the cover. The monthly meeting was at the Plum Delicious Restaurant in Renton, WA. VP Lorrie Montgomery presided as the president was absent. Club UHF radios were presently sold out, but more were on order. They cost $55 more. Ken Meyer and Marlene Moeller became members, bringing the total to 243. Steve Yabroff offered 2014 Corvette-a-Day Calendars at $6 plus $2 shipping. A new book “Corvette Stingray: The Seventh Generation of America’s Sports Car” was $20 plus $5 shipping. (Editor’s note: This book is for sale on Amazon in hard cover for about $32)

2019 Board/Officer Electionsby Robert Stone

We need club members to run for 2019 board and officer positions. Of the six positions that are up for election, five positions (there is one candidate for president) will be vacant unless members volunteer to be nominated. This is your chance to help the club maintain its great activities and

support the charity activities. It is also a chance to have an impact on how the club moves forward for the next year. As a bonus, if you are the two-year board (activity chair) member you have the chance to tell 40 to 50 people where they

Please contact Robert Stone (Vice President) or any other board member about any of the positions and you can begin to learn what is involved with a position. CMCS NCM “Enthusiast Exhibit”: I recently reported that our very own Corvette Marque Club of Seattle was chosen as one of two Corvette Clubs (along with Indy Corvettes out of Indianapolis) to be featured in the “Enthusiast Exhibit” at the National Corvette Museum (NCM). The exhibit is in place now as of August 24th until August 2019. This is a distinct honor for

CMCS and recognition of our very own enthusiasm for all things Corvette. Below are photos of the display featuring our club:

5,000th Hot Wheel Donated

Several years ago, St. Louis Corvette Club Ambassadors Marty and Judy Dooley began collecting Hot Wheel Corvettes and donating

them to the Museum's education program. The idea was to provide every child who visits the Museum through the school group tour program with one to take home, as well as take the cars to schools as part of a Corvette Museum outreach program.

The Dooleys challenged other Corvette Clubs and enthusiasts to donate the same to help grow the program. As part of the Ambassador meeting at our 24th Anniversary event, Marty presented the Museum with another box of Hot Wheels, including his 5,000th to be donated!

Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup - October 14thby Kevin Wilson: CMCS Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator (206) 478-2346

As most of you know, one of the CMCS Community Service activities is participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program. 2018 marks our 20th year! Several times a year we gather to remove litter from the shoulder area along I-5 Southbound for about a mile near the NE 175th Street Exit (North Seattle). In return, we get the satisfaction of supporting our community, and we get a sign posted along the freeway that identifies CMCS as the volunteer organization responsible for keeping this section of the freeway clean.

The clean-up is on Sunday October 14th. We meet at 9:30 am at the Metro Transit Bus Base Visitor Parking near the 175th Street NE Exit. The litter Pick-up normally takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. We often gather at a nearby restaurant following the clean-up for Breakfast/Lunch.We currently have two volunteers to drive vehicles the day of the clean-up, and we need 10 to 12 additional CMCS Members to volunteer to be litter collectors. This is an easy way to support your club and to provide a needed service to our community, and you get to keep any good items you find. We’ve found cash, gift cards, tools and other treasures! Please respond to me via e-mail if you can take part in this activity: [email protected] have the safety gear you need. We have instructions at the site. Also, for Adopt-A-Highway drivers; we have 4 volunteer members who rotate this responsibility in groups of two. Oran Petersen, Lyal Schlotterbeck, Gene Kinnunen and Steve Yabroff with Joe Powell as back-up.Gene is stepping down as a driver after many years, so we need another driver for the volunteer pool. You need a 6-passenger vehicle (5 plus yourself). A class IV hitch allows you be either of the two vehicles. (The rear vehicle must carry a sign that fits into the hitch receiver.)If you can serve as a driver in the volunteer pool please let me know as well. Thanks!
