Wearing their best country/western attire, almost 300 guests enjoyed Ave Maria’s 15th Annual Silent Auction and Concert starring country music icon Lee Greenwood. This year’s event was held April 16th in the Sally Hook Performing Arts Center at St. Agnes Academy-St. Domi-nic School. Guests enjoyed bidding on a wonderful array of Silent and Live Auction items, sampling hearty appe-tizers prepared by the Tim Malone Family, and tapping their cowboy boots and singing along with Greenwood. Greenwood’s concert finale was a medley of patriotic songs, including God Bless the USA, voted by the music industry as the most patriotic song in America. Proceeds from this year’s Concert and Auction benefitted Ave Ma-ria residents and clients.

When I was young and growing up in a neighborhood in north Memphis, the temptations of the day were easily attained, but I fought them off. I resisted the whisperings of the devil in my ears and the taunts and challenges of my friends to “be a man, go ahead, do it.” It was hard, but I was so strong, so brave, that I couldn’t be swayed from my duty to “do the right thing.” However, do you know what really made it easy for me to “do the right thing”? My father was a policeman. If you want the motivation to do the right thing, have a dad who’s helping to keep our city safe every day. I knew he would punish me for whatever I did wrong, and I did not want to offend him or cause him any embarrassment. Growing up, my dad was my role model and inspiration that helped me to always do the right thing. As we go through our daily lives, doing the right thing should also be our motivation so we do not offend God, our heavenly Father—not because we’re afraid of the consequences, but because it causes offense to God. Doing the right thing is the main point in our Act of Contrition that we pray especially after confession. We should reflect on the words we say, and not just repeat them when the priest tells us to. These words tell us how we should approach our relationship with God, our Father. As we say these words, we should be thinking about God, instead of thinking about how we will be punished when we say, “I detest my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend thee my God…” Let’s spend our lives looking upon God as our Father and not as our punisher. If we think of the offense to God before we do something wrong, then it will be easier to resist the whisperings of the evil one who plays on our weakness and doubt. The closing words of the Act of Contrition say that God is “all good and deserving of all our love”. The way we offend God is by not doing deeds that will cause Him offense. Only then we will truly “amend our lives.”

In Christ,Deacon Jack

Phyllis Kallaher, with her mother Tina Brandon, had three relatives at Ave Maria: her mother, Tina Brandon; her aunt, Louise Pagano; and her grandmother, Esotto Giaccaglini.

Both Esotto Giaccaglini and her hus-band Alberto Giaccaglini were born and raised near the Ancona Port in the region of the Le Marche region towns of Castello Ferretti and Mas-signano. Esotto met and later married Alberto in Memphis. When Alberto died at a young age, only in his 30’s, Esotto raised their six children with the help of her older children. Esotto Giaccaglini lived at Ave Maria from the late 1950’s – 1960’s.

Born and raised in Memphis., Louise Pagano attended St. Mary’s School and Catholic High School. She and her husband Joe were married for 61 years and had two sons. Louise worked for a short time at the Planter’s Peanut Store on Main Street in down-town Memphis and enjoyed playing bingo, bunko and cards with her fam-ily; fishing; and going to Tunica and Las Vega. Louise Pagano lived at Ave Maria in the late 1990’s.

A native of Memphis, Santina “Tina” Cecilia Brandon attended St. Mary’s School and Catholic High School. She was married to her husband John for 50 years and had five children. Very active in the community, Tina worked at the Planters Peanut Store, made custom drapes and was a school crossing guard at Grahamwood School for 15 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling; going to Tunica; playing bingo, cards and bunko; and spending time with her family and friends. Tina lived at Ave Maria for 10 years during the 2000’s.

Mary Spinosa’s parents journeyed to Memphis from their home in Northern Italy on the Adriatic Coast. Born and raised in Mem-phis, Mary graduated from St. Mary’s High School, and mar-ried Charles Thomas Spinosa at age 27. She worked for Liberty Cash Grocers, raised four children, and was the very proud of her 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. A meticulous housekeeper, Mary also enjoyed spending hours in her garden; cooking wonderful meals; and just spending time with family and friends.

When she was no longer able to live alone, Mary came to Ave Maria in 1998, where she stayed in bed, and shared a room with her “precious” roommate Miss Willie until 2000. Her family re-members the wonderful staff who cared for Mrs. Spinosa, es-pecially a CNA named Festoria. Mary’s daughter-in-law Janet Ticer remembers that Festoria called her one night to let her know she had checked on Mrs. Spinosa who was sleeping com-fortably and even “gave Mrs. Spinosa a kiss for Janet.” As Janet recalls, “It meant the world to me to know that mother was being watched after so carefully and lovingly. The staff were so dedi-cated and became like family to us. Also, it was such a great joy to know that we could roll Mother down the hall and go to Mass and be there with her. Ave Maria is a very special place and we were thankful for all the love and attention that they showed our mother.”

When Mary Carolyn Mays moved to Ave Maria, she told every-one she wanted to be called “Marilyn” because she always liked that name. She loved her Assisted Living apartment and enjoyed having no responsibilities. She made new friends easily; enjoyed playing the piano for the residents and staff; and was finally able to pursue her hobby of painting. Although a widow for many years, Mary surprised herself and her family by having a couple of boyfriends while living at Ave Maria. As her health declined, she moved into the nursing home and later became one of the first residents to move into St. Francis Green House.

Marilyn’s daughter, Barbara Spinosa has fond memories of her mom: “The Depression and hard childhood only made Marilyn appreciate her blessings more. She had the faith of a child. Her glass was always half-full to overflowing. She whistled while she did her house chores, cooking and cleaning, and loved to find humor in anything. She felt strongly that God would never send anyone to hell for eating meat on Friday. She knew God was merciful and her favorite stories were the lives of the saints. She would discipline us with reverse psychology and always compli-mented our efforts, however small. Marilyn passed on to her five children that the most rewarding lives we would live would be in showing love, charity, and compassion to all we came in contact with, by following her humble example. My brothers and sister and I were so blessed to have her for our earthly mother, and we were honored to reverse our roles when her well-being made it necessary. We feel that her final years, which were almost fifteen spent at Ave Maria Home, gave her immeasurable joy and secu-rity. By her being so protected and loved, we, her children were at peace during her vulnerable years.”

Southern Musings By Jean Morgan, Green House Resident

Growing up in the South brings many memories to most people who have experienced this and I am one of these. My growing up experience in the hills of North Mississippi has recorded many encounters, and countless memorable events, especially in the way of speaking in a Southern voice, not ever totally lost in the later years of life. But the growing interest in those early years also had to do with politics of all things. I loved election time with vis-its to the newspaper office in the town by the various politicians, whom we met and whose candidacies I liked to follow, especially if they won. Many events attracted our young group. I recall the summer parties where icy watermelon slices took the place of ice cream and cake for our young crowd. Then there were attractions like Vacation Bible School at the church, Girl Scout camp at nearby Maywood Park, and most important to me, were the books I devoured, my own collection as well as those I borrowed from the pub-lic library. In the South, we were always conscious of the im-portance of the Past—the monuments, the older people, so many friends of all ages. Each unit of friends had a special place along with many family members—aunts, uncles, dozens of cousins of all ages, all had an important part to play. Growing up in the South offered an array of events, places, and people still recalled with pure pleasure.

This month’s writer Mrs. Jean Morgan lives in Ave Maria’s St. Francis House.
