Since St. Peter’s first opened its doors in 1890, the St. Peter’s Foundation, in its many different forms,has helped to ensure that patients and members of our community receive the best care possible.
Through regular fund raising programs, and special events and activities, the Foundation has played anintegral role in the development of St. Peter’s from a 14-bed home for incurables to becoming theregion’s leader in seniors’ care, including the delivery and management of complex continuing care services and the provision of community-based and outpatient services.
Reverend Thomas Geoghegan, founder of St. Peter’s, was the first person to successfully fund raise onbehalf of the organization. His fund raising efforts resulted in the purchase of a home which was converted into the first St. Peter’s Home for people requiring chronic care – a level of care not availablein hospitals in 1890.
Today, we are proud to be a part of the tradition of caring that Reverend Geoghegan established 110years ago.
We are truly appreciative of the benevolent and generous contributions of donors, who over the past110 years, have helped to make a difference in the lives of seniors and the chronically ill. Each andevery donation builds on the good work started 110 years ago and enables St. Peter’s to continue tomeet the needs of seniors and chronically ill adults in our community.
We would like to express our sincerest and warmest thanks to the many donors who supported St.Peter’s in 1999-2000. Your generosity enabled us to support priority patient needs and fund an academic Chair in Aging at McMaster University to engage in research to improve the well-being ofolder adults.
We have had the opportunity to meet many of our donors and experience first-hand the overwhelminggenerosity of this community. We are heartened by the high regard that this community has for St.Peter’s and the level of support that has made it possible for St. Peter’s to deliver a standard of care thatis unmatchable.

In appreciation of our donors
In 1999-2000, over 1,350 individuals, families, organizations and businesses gave generously tosupport patient care and equipment needs at St. Peter’s. They expressed their support inmany ways including in memoriam donations,attendance at fundraisers, donations of gifts in kind, annual contributions, and in honour of a special occasion such as birthdays and anniversaries. It is our pleasure to recognize andthank these donors by highlighting their namesin this annual report.
Volunteer contribution
In addition to the generosity of these donors, we gratefully acknowledge St. Peter’s volunteersfor their caring and devotion to our patients.Volunteers are an important part of St. Peter’scommunity and are instrumental in helping theFoundation achieve its goals. Their tireless andselfless work resulted in a donation of $25,000
to the Foundation insupport of patientcare this past year.The funds wereraised through salesof Nevada ticketsand Gift Shop items.
Newly funded Chair in Aging
In an effort to ensure that research into age-related issues will keep St. Peter’s at the leading edge of delivering care to seniors, St. Peter’s, together with the Faculty of HealthSciences at McMaster University, has estab-lished an endowed Chair in Aging. A donation

of $1-million by St. Peter’s Foundation matched by the University will fund this important position. The chair will oversee vital teachingand research projects that have a direct impacton the health and wellness of older adults, and be responsible for sharing this knowledge withother health care providers and future healthcare professionals. An international search willbegin in the summer of 2000 for the individualwho will fill this position.
Vendor’s day program
Last year, the Foundation introduced the verysuccessful Vendor’s day program at St. Peter’s.Each week, patients, family memebers, staff, volunteers and visitors have the opportunity toshop for gifts, clothing, jewelry, confectionariesand other items on-site. In return, vendorsdonate a portion of their proceeds back to St.Peter’s. The program has been such a successthat vendors are booked until the end ofDecember 2000.
Christmas Dreams Come True Gala
One of the year’s most notable eventswas the ChristmasDreams Come TrueGala held in October1999. St. Peter’sFoundation, in part-nership with the Lung Association Hamilton-Wentworth, created a magical evening in supportof the two organizations. The sold-out black tie event was hosted by CHML radio personalityBob Bratina. Highlights included dancing to abig band, and live auction of five beautifully decorated Christmas trees, five themed stockings, James Lumbers print, wine tours, aplane ride, gift certificates donated by local merchants and many more items too numerousto mention. Guests also had the opportunity to silently bid on the unique fresh and silk flower centerpieces donated by local florists.Keys to unlock a glass box, which was designedand donated by well-known artist Shirley Elford, containing a diamond necklace soldquickly. Many thanks to all the sponsors, donorsand guests who helped to make the evening a success.

10th Annual Festival of Lights Celebration
In December 1999, members of our communitywere invited to join in the celebration of St. Peter’s 10th Annual Festival of Lights, which marks the beginning of the holiday seasonat St. Peter’s. A special note of thanks to K-Literadio personality Sunni Genesco who has hostedthe Festival for the past two years. Over 200people of all ages were entertained by the captivating voices of the Orpheus Male Choir.
After muchanticipation,guests wereinvited out-side for thespectacularlighting ofover 10,000
bulbs in the courtyard. Many thanks to every-one who made a contribution in support ofpatient care during the month long campaignleading up to the Festival of Lights celebration.
For the staff of St. Peter’s Foundation, 1999-2000 was a busy and successful year. Yet, weowe our success to the many loyal supporters inthe community who recognized St. Peter’sunique role in caring for the elderly and madegenerous donations in support of patient equipment, special projects and programs lastyear.
