Sallie Vallins, niece of brothers Leslie and Frank Coombs, who lost their lives in action at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 met a second cousin of hers, Hugh Bailey, for the first time at the Remembrance Service at St Michael’s Church, Elm-wood Road Chiswick W4 3DY on 9 November.

Sallie and Hugh’s maternal grandmothers were sisters. Hugh, when browsing the web, came across the Heroes of Chiswick website where he found details of his relatives Leslie and Frank Coombs, who

lost their lives in July 1916 on the Somme.

He also found mention of the boys’ niece Sallie Vallins who had been contacted by the project researchers, was born in Chiswick and a few months ago, visited the Church for the first time in 65 years.

Agang of violent thieves who targeted a Chiswick woman coming home from a

night out have been convicted of robbery.

Sean Hylton, 23, (22.10.91) of Abbey Road, E15, and Nsimba Malungo, 23 (12.10.91) of Ab-bey Rd, E15, were convicted of robbery and fraud following a trial at Kingston Crown Court today on Tuesday, 25 Novem-ber.

A third man, Imran Naiim, 21, (30.9.93) Ranelagh Rd, E6, was also convicted of robbery and fraud in his absence and bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Younis Kamali, 19 (12.12.94) of Priory Rd, E6, was found not guilty of robbery but found guilty of fraud.

The gang hired a cab for the night to cruise the streets of the capital to look for potential vulnerable victims.

At approximately 00:30hrs March 1, 2013, while being driven around London they

The woman defended herself and he then ran off in the direction of Sutton Court Road. About three hours later that same day at 5am, a woman, aged in her mid 20s, was walk-ing to work when she heard footsteps behind her as went along Ravenscourt Park, W6. The man, matching the sus-pect’s description and also

speaking to her in Spanish, caught up with her. He then sexually assaulted her, before she resisted and he ran away. The fourth incident happened on Sunday, 30th November at 3am in Sharon Road, W4. A woman, aged in her late 30s, got off a bus in Turnham Green Terrace. As she walked from Chiswick High Road into Dukes Avenue a man matching the suspect’s description and also speaking to her in Spanish. When she was in Sharon Road, the suspect sexually assaulted her before he was disturbed by a member of the public.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Broom, from Hounslow CID, said: “I want the public’s help to find this man. It is a very clear e-fit and someone will know who he is. Each of the women he has approached has fought him off and on one occasion he was disrupted by a member of the public, pre-venting him from continuing the assault. Fortunately no one has suffered serious injury, but these assaults have been very distressing for all the women. “Given the similarities of the assaults, the matching descrip-tions of the man, and the fact he is speaking Spanish on each occasion we are treating these cases as linked. One line of enquiry we are exploring is that he is not Spanish but is using his language skills to help hide his identity. “My officers are working hard to trace this man, and we want to do that before he has the opportunity to assault another

singled out a 59-year-old wom-an who was travelling home af-ter a night out with friends.

During her fare home in a li-censed Hackney carriage, she was spotted by the group with-drawing money in Kensington High Street.

Two of the men got out of the car they were travelling in and compromised her pin number by ‘shoulder surfing’.

One claimed that the cash ma-chine was broken while the other watched as she inputted her pin number. The victim withdrew money and took no notice and continued with her onward journey.

Upon entering her house in Chiswick she then heard a knock on the door. She an-swered the door to see two youths stood in the doorway.

One of the gang barged the door

with such force that it connect-ed with her face knocking her to the floor. Both youths then ran into the house, picked up her handbag and ran off down the street.

It later became apparent that a credit card belonging to the victim had been compromised and goods in excess of £2,000 had been purchased within 12 hours.

The incident was investigated

by officers from the Serious Acquisitive Crime Unit based at Hounslow who used exten-sive CCTV imagery to identify the vehicle involved and sub-sequently catch the gang.

They will be sentenced on De-cember 18 at Kingston Crown Court.

Minicab driver Alexandra Pas-cu, 30 (23.01.84) of Pickering Road, Barking, was found not guilty of all charges.

Detective Inspector Neil John of the Serious Acquisitive Crime Unit at based at Houn-slow said: “This was a calcu-lated and vicious attack on a lone vulnerable lady in her own home’

“A thorough and relentless investigation was undertaken by officers from the Serious and Acquisitive Crime Unit at Hounslow Police Station lead-ing to the arrest of all the gang members who had believed they were out of reach of po-lice. The conviction today to-day demonstrates that this sort of behaviour will not be toler-ated.”

There were festive treats such as Let it Go from Disney’s animated feature film Frozen, toe-tapping I wish it could be Christmas every day by Wiz-zard and traditional Christmas carols Silent Night and Away in a Manger.

This was the first of many fundraising activities for the school’s building project known as the Keystone Fund. All proceeds from the CD and future Keystone Fund activities will go towards the £295,000 necessary for much needed im-provements within the school including new computers, a learning kitchen, dedicated art room, new school hall and re-

developing outside spaces.

“We were really delighted to launch this once in a lifetime project that not only will help towards the much needed ef-forts of developing the school buildings, but also see the com-munity, children, parents and alumni come together in cel-ebration of St Peter’s heritage going back as far as 1849,”

says Mrs Jean Shipton, Head-teacher at St Peter’s CE Prima-ry School.

If you know a parent, grandpar-ent or past pupil at St Peter’s CE Primary, pop a CD in their stocking this Christmas. The Keystone Fund will be taking pre-orders for this limited edi-tion CD at these special prices.

Chiswick School will host after-hours FFA sessions every Tuesday from Jan-uary 6. The sessions will be open to beginners and improver freerunners

in separate classes (not just Chiswick School students) for 12 year olds and upwards.

The Foucan Freerunning Academy currently holds regular sessions at the Moberley Sports and Education Cen-

50for15, a politics project an-alysing fifty marginal seats for the general election in 2015, continued its tour of the coun-try with a stop in the constit-uency of Brentford and Isle-worth last Saturday. The seat is a pivotal Conservative-Labour marginal and the result there will be very influential in de-ciding which party wins next year.

Given the seat’s prominence in deciding who will be elected Prime Minister next year, the 50for15 team asked shoppers on Chiswick High Road what they thought made for good political leaders, and whether they thought any current poli-

Labour’s parliamentary candi-date Ruth Cadbury has written directly to local Conservative MP Mary Mcleod challeng-ing her to defend the Govern-ment’s highly controversial NHS reforms in the run up to a private members’ bill being debated on 21st November.

This bill will call on the Gov-ernment to stop the further Pri-vatisation of the NHS, restore the legal duty of the Secretary of State for HEALTH to pro-vide National HEALTH Ser-vices and amend the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to remove controversial competi-tion requirements.

In the letter Ruth Cadbury questions whether the Tories’ agenda offurther privatisation is funda-

ticians had these qualities. One voter said “A leader should not really be seen as a leader, but more as a facilitator of sensi-ble thought.” However, anoth-er voter believed that leaders should take a more direct role in policy making and team work and should recognise that they cannot “please every-body”.There was near universal agreement that political leaders need to be charismatic, but less consensus about which leaders have these qualities. Leaders of the smaller parties, in par-ticular Natalie Bennett of the Green Party and Nigel Farage from UKIP were more often

accredited by voters as having charismatic appeal, rather than the leaders of the current three largest parties.

In an interview with 50for15, Conservative MP for the constituency Mary Macleod highlighted how she thinks politicians must put aside ideo-

logical differences on different positions and be pragmatic in order to effectively work to-gether: “I spent 20 years in business before coming to pol-itics, so I think that you just have to make things happen and work with people… At the end of the day, I wouldn’t be doing this job if I thought I couldn’t make a difference.”

50for15, a project run by re-cent Oxford University grad-uates, aims to provide insight into the UK’s fifty most mar-ginal constituencies, which, by their very nature, are the places where the result of the general election will really be decided.

Adam Ward, co-founder of 50for15, said, “The event in Brentford and Isleworth was a great success. Given the prominence leaders have in elections, particularly with the introduction of leadership de-bates in 2010, it is important that we delve deeper into ana-lysing what qualities we want from our political leaders. The premium that voters place on charisma is particularly im-portant, and explains the suc-cess of politicians like Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage.”

The website for 50for15 is www.50for15.com and the project can be found on Twit-

mentally op-posed to the foundingprinciple of the NHS, where patients are put before profit.’

Ruth said; “I keep meeting people who have experi-enced first-hand the effects of Tory re-organi-sation, privati-sation and cut-

backs. These range from the loss of a GP surgery in Spring Grove, longer waits to see their GP or at hospital, and NHS staff who worry that their care and professionalism is being undermined on a daily basis.”

She added “ Many are worried as to the impact of the prop-soed closure of A&E services at Charing Cross and Eal-ing hospitals, and Hounslow Council is having to deal with yet more cuts in Government funding meaning that Care ser-vices are under further pressure to cope”.

Labour has already said it will repeal the Coalition Govern-ment’sHealth and Social care bill if it wins the General Election in May 2015.

*Since the Coalition’s £3 bil-lion top-down reorganisation, figures show that in this con-stituency one in five patients now has to wait at least 7 days to see their GP and waiting times for A&E and operations in London are on the rise again.

The NHS is a key part of La-bour’s General Election both nationally and in Brentford and Isleworth. Its commitments include guaranteeing people a GP appointment within 48 hours, funding 20,000 more nurses and combining health and social care into a single service.

The private members’ bill on 21 November is being tabled by Labour MP Clive

Efford and a petition has been set up to support the bill:

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/68064

*Latest NHS England GP Pa-tient SURVEY, released in July 2014, shows that 20% of patients in the Hounslow Clin-ical Commissioning Group had to wait a week or more to see or speak to a GP or nurse

Chiswick families face having to pay as much as £364,389 to upsize from a three to a four bedroom home in London

Key findings across six key London bor-oughs:- The cost of

upsizing from a three bedroom to a four bedroom house rang-es from £282,900 to more than £500,000, without factoring in any additional moving costs- In the London Bor-ough of Richmond, the average four bedroom house is valued

CASH-IN ON THE ATTIC: AS THE ‘CAPITAL COST’ OF MOVING HOUSE IN LONDON REACHES NEW HEIGHTS, IT’S NO LONGER THE BEST OPTION FOR HOMEOWNERS IN NEED OF MORE SPACE

at £503,288 more than a three bedroom, whereas in Wand-sworth it would take £282,900 to bridge the gap- Moving costs alone (estate agents fees, SDLT and other costs) to go from a three bedroom to a four bedroom in Hammersmith and Fulham reached a staggering £106,000, almost double the cost of an av-erage loft conversion - £53,477

Homeowners in London are in-creasingly choosing to save the ‘capital cost’ of moving house and invest it in improving the space under their roof instead, as conditions in the housing market and the rising costs of moving house make staying put a more profitable option, according to new research re-leased by Landmark Lofts.

The average price of a property in London has risen 19% in the last year alone, and now stands at £457,072. The new research by Dataloft, on behalf of Land-mark Lofts, reveals that the enormous additional ‘capital outlay’ to purchase properties in key London boroughs such as Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Richmond

upon Thames and Wandsworth — all of which have experi-enced price growth exceeding the London average of 51% over the past five years — is

putting bigger properties well out of reach of families who need to upsize. According to the Council of Mortgage Lend-ers, the value of loans to Lon-don home owners for re-mort-gage in Q2 of this year has shot up by 22% (to £2.8bn) since Q2 2013, as they seek to im-prove rather than move.

In Richmond, the average price of a four bedroom house cur-rently on the market is a stag-gering 82% (£503,288) higher than that of a three bedroom house. In Hammersmith and

Fulham, while prices are only 24% higher for a four bedroom house, that means the price of that extra bedroom equates to £322,000. In Ealing, at 38% higher, the fourth bedroom would cost about £183,000.

And that’s before you account for the additional costs of mov-ing, including Stamp Duty, mortgage arrangement fees, solicitors’ fees for selling and buying, removals costs, sur-vey fees (which alone can add

on £3,000 to £6,500), estate agent’s sellers’ fees (common-ly 1.5% of the property price) and any repairs or decoration that the new house requires.

The additional costs involved in upsizing from a three bed-room to a four bedroom house stand at £68,897 in Richmond, £80,779 in Ealing and Chis-wick, and as much as £105,929 in Hammersmith and Fulham, prompting many homeowners to opt for loft conversions (at an average cost of £53,477) in-stead. London’s leading loft conver-sion company Landmark Lofts is experiencing unprecedented demand for bespoke conver-sions in these areas with enqui-ries up by 250% year on year, as people increasingly see the value of adding extra room with the minimum of hassle.“With the costs of moving go-ing through the roof, it’s no wonder growing families or people looking for an office or guest bedroom are investing their money in loft conversions instead,” says James Gold, Founder and Director of Land-mark Lofts. “It means they can not only add that extra room, to their own exact specifica-tions, but usually a bathroom or ensuite too, lots of extra storage and incredibly valuable enhanced square footage for when they do eventually come to sell.”What’s more, it’s easier than ever. “The updated planning regulations mean that having a

loft conversion is nothing com-pared to the hassle of a house move,” Gold explains. “People are always amazed that the loft can add an open-plan area that replicates the entire footprint of the house — and with house prices and the associated costs rising the way they are right now, for the typical London family it’s not just a luxury, it’s a necessity.”It doesn’t look like things are going to change any time soon. Despite measures that have been put in place to stem the rise in house prices — includ-ing April’s Mortgage Market Review bringing in stronger means testing — and the ex-pected rise in interest rates, concern over the affordability of housing is growing, as a raft of indicators point to further price rises in the coming years: positive economic forecasts are predicting a move from recov-ery into expansion and growth, the GDP is up from 1.7% last year to 3.2% this year, and un-employment rates continue to fall. The average house price in Lon-don (£457,072) is now perilous-ly close to the £500,000 barrier that sees Stamp Duty Land Tax rise from 3% to 4%, adding at least £5,000 to the cost of buy-ing a new home. This means a tax of at least £50,000 on a

house over £1million (such as those in Hammersmith and Fulham). In fact, the amount being paid on Stamp Duty in the Capital is at a record high, with London accounting for 42% of the total paid on resi-dential properties in 2013/2014 — even though only 15% of house purchases took place in the capital. A disproportionate-ly high number of Londoners are now being slapped with the huge extra costs that were orig-inally brought in to target the wealthy. In Wandsworth, the average price of a semi-detached house was £1.03 million last year compared to £917,890 the pre-vious year. Any potential buyer not only had to find an addi-tional £120,000 for the house itself but the £15,000 extra Stamp Duty. In Ealing, the av-erage semi had jumped in price by 21% in 12 months. When it comes to the extra bedroom factor, in all but one of the ar-eas surveyed by Dataloft, the move from a three-bedroom house to four bedrooms pushed the Stamp Duty into a high-er band, resulting in moving costs ranging from £67,694 in Willesden Green and Golders Green to £84,722 in Isling-ton, Muswell Hill and Stoke Newington to the enormous £105,929 in Hammersmith and Fulham.

We also have a great new menu featuring ‘Best of British’ dishes with a modern, stylish twist bringing exciting new flavours to the table.”

Ian Dobie, Managing Director of St George West London, said: “The opening of One Over the Ait marks an import-ant and exciting milestone in the redevelopment of this area.

It’s the newest

addition to an already thriving community, joining the ex-isting amenities, including a coffee shop, deli and super-market, One Over the Ait will be a great enhancement to the village atmosphere.”

Jonathon Swaine, Managing Director of Fuller’s Inns, added: “One Over the Ait is a great addition to our portfolio. It’s always a challenge starting from scratch like this and the team has done a fantastic job. I can’t wait to have my first pint of Pride looking at one of the best views in London.”

Located just two miles away from Fuller’s home in Chis-wick, One Over the Ait is now open.

Fuller, Smith & Turner P.L.C., the London brewer and premium pub company, is delighted to announce the opening of the latest addition, One Over the Ait at Kew Bridge.

Independent Commission To Review A&E Closures In West London

from winter pressures, fears are rising that lives are being put at risk.

Growing disquiet at the knock-on effect on other hospitals, of the closure of emergency ser-vices at Central Middlesex and Hammersmith, has also result-ed in the surprise announce-ment by NHS England of its own inquiry into how hospital reconfiguration in west London is being handled. The councils remain concerned about the impact of closing further ser-vices at Ealing and Charing

Cross hospitals on the remain-ing emergency services in the region.

Official NHS figures show the trusts that run St Mary’s, Charing Cross, West Middle-sex, Ealing and Northwick Park hospitals have all failed to meet A&E waiting time targets over recent weeks.

In the three weeks after 19 Oc-tober, all three hospital trusts dipped below the national target, which says 95% of pa-tients should be seen within 4

hours. Performance at North West London Hospitals Trust, which runs Ealing and North-wick Park hospitals, fell to just 67.8% of patients being seen within 4 hours, the second worst result in the country.

Now, four councils in Ham-mersmith & Fulham, Ealing, Brent and Hounslow have got together to set up an impartial inquiry to look in depth at the impact local closures are hav-ing, and at the implications of further hospital reorganisa-tion proposals, including the planned closure of services at Ealing hospital and Charing Cross hospital in Hammer-smith.

As well as reviewing the evi-dence provided by the NHS to support their reorganisation, the commission will be asking others to contribute evidence. It will also commission further research to fill the gaps in ex-isting evidence.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council said: “Since plans to change emergency services in our area were first suggested we have felt that our very real concerns have been largely ignored. We have heard lots of spin about what will re-place A&E services at Ealing, Charing Cross, Central Mid-dlesex and Hammersmith hos-pitals but before these changes go any further we need proper answers. Emergency services in this area are already strug-gling so it makes no sense to cut Ealing’s A&E. By engag-ing someone of the calibre of Michael Mansfield QC to carry out this independent review we know that the public will get a true picture of what is happen-ing and if the NHS is keeping its word about providing new services before others are closed.”

Councillor Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, said: “Our worst fears, about the effects of closing local A&Es before the expansion of North-wick Park was complete, have come true. Brent residents now face the longest A&E waiting times in the country and imme-diate action needs to be taken to resolve this situation as we are talking about life and death emergency treatment. Further delays to the A&E improve-ments at Northwick Park will only make the problem worse. We will support the Indepen-dent Commission, and will be demanding answers from NHS bosses at our next scrutiny committee. West Londoners deserve the best healthcare and this joint review will be vital in shining a light on what has

gone on with these botched A&E closures.”

“A&E closures are already putting dangerous additional pressures on other hospitals and will only get worse if ser-vices at Charing Cross are also closed,” says H&F Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Cowan. “The official figures speak for themselves, but we plan to bring some extra, in-dependent scrutiny to examine what local trusts are doing to our hospital services. An im-partial review is needed, free of vested interests, of the real and likely impact of these ma-jor hospital re-configurations and the financial reality behind them.

The leader of Hounslow Coun-cil, Councillor Steve Curran said: “Ensuring a safe and sus-tainable future for West Mid-dlesex Hospital remains one of Hounslow Council’s top priorities. We continue to work closely with Hounslow Clini-cal Commissioning Group and the NHS Trust to make sure local residents receive the best possible care.”

Michael Mansfield QC last year chaired the Lewisham People’s Commission, an in-quiry into the proposals to close services at Lewisham Hospital. He has represented defendants in criminal trials, appeals and inquiries in some of the most controversial legal cases in the country. He represented the family of Jean Charles de Menezes and the families of victims at the Bloody Sunday Inquiry. He chaired an inquiry into the shoot to kill policy in the North of Ireland and has represented many families at inquests, including the Mar-chioness disaster and the Lock-erbie bombing. He also rep-resents the family of Stephen Lawrence.

He will be joined on the com-mission by Dr Stephen Hirst, a retired GP from Chiswick with extensive local knowledge and John Lister, researcher on the People’s Inquiry into London’s NHS in 2012 and Senior Lec-turer in Journalism at Coventry University.

designed for each user and us-ing the specialised equipment the building houses. It works alongside the excellent PACE charity that provides twice weekly specialised disability sports sessions within the cen-tre specially designed for those with a profound learning dis-ability.

As the users are so very dis-abled, it is fully fitted out with hoists and changing areas for suitable and dignified toilet-ing which is undertaken by an experienced, longstanding and professional staff team, all who are now facing redundancy. The staff team also have strong advocacy skills for their users and review, report and monitor users regularly and liase with health teams and families to ensure the users are given the best chances in life and retain their dignity and independence at all times.

Ealing Council, facing a huge budget cut from central gov-ernment has decided that the centre will close in May 2015, before which each user will be re - assessed and parents & carers handed an individual budget to themselves provide for their son or daughters care. Parents & carers will be ‘sign-posted’ towards what Ealing Council regards as suitable al-ternatives to the Carlton Road day service. These services are mainly no existent within the borough for people of such a profound level of disability. It is all very rushed and poorly

thought out.

Hindsight clearly shows through feedback from previ-ous closures (i.e. Stirling Road Day Service in 2013) that par-ents and carers strongly feel the alternative services the council opted for are poorly provided and unsuitable; many former users from Stirling Road are unhappy and now receive poor quality and/or unsuitable day care services and also receive less time in day care.

The only conclusion is that Ealing Council is abandoning the users of Carlton Road, the most vulnerable people in our borough to save money - a one off saving of £180 K will be saved by axing the 17 staff and the sale of the site to a suitable developer will be worth several million.

If Ealing Council were a little more creative in their thinking they could provide a suitable alternative building for this group of users (and staff) to continue the service, perhaps tied in with one of the many new developments in the bor-ough and pride itself on the fact that they would be willing to go ‘the extra mile’ for those most in need.

Are Ealing’s most vulnerable individuals to be sacrificed be-cause of the Council officers lack of creative thinking? The answer so far seems to be yes..

CAMRA LONDON ACkNOWLEDgES CHiSWiCk BREWER!This year, London CAMRA’s John Young Memorial Award goes to a man who has long been associated with his love and knowledge of beer. Beating other worthy nominations, the 2014 Award is being given to John Keeling, who has been in charge of the brewing at Fuller’s Brewery for many years. John has long been known for his commitment to brewing good beer, winning several awards for his iconic brews such as ESB, London Pride and

the much underrated session beer, Chiswick Bitter, while also producing a range of seasonal ales that keep people coming back to Fuller’s pubs time and again. John Young, the chairman of Young’s Brewery who died in 2006, was well regarded as an advocate of good beer and pubs. He famously banned keg beers from Young’s pubs long before CAMRA came on to the scene. To celebrate his memory, the London branches of CAM-

RA make an annual award to acknowledge publicly an indi-vidual or organisation that they believe has done the most for real ale and/or pubs within the Greater London area. Geoff Strawbridge, CAMRA London’s Regional Director said, ‘The Award to John Keel-ing recognises the important role he has played in the con-tinuing interest in beer in the Capital. Like in so many oth-er food and drink areas, this resurgence is a result of con-sumers seeking out local, good quality produce. John also has been known to give his advice to other newer brewers, helping make London the best place for beer in Britain’.

Residents have been urged to tell Hounslow Council how they feel

about the new wheelie bin ser-vice following the first collec-tions in the new trial areas this week.

Nearly 20,000 wheelie bins were delivered across the bor-ough since the roll out started over the last two weeks.

Cllr Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “I know there have been a few initial problems, and that is to be expected, the first collec-tions have happened relatively smoothly.

“However, we’re not compla-cent and we’re very keen to hear from residents about the new service. We have teams of staff out and about talking with residents, answering their questions and providing them with information on collec-tion dates and how to recycle more.”

Residents are being asked to donate warm clothes to help people in need this winter. Eal-ing Council’s Winter Warm Up appeal will run between 1-19 December and all items col-lected will be donated to local people in need.

Men’s, women’s and children’s clothes are needed in all sizes and ages. In particular, thick socks, jumpers, scarves, gloves and hats are needed. The ap-peal is looking for all items do-nated to be clean and in good condition.

Councillor Jasbir Anand, cab-inet member for housing, em-ployment and skills said: “We can take things like heating, warm clothes and shelter for granted, yet, this winter there will be people without all three.”

Ealing Council has been highly commended for the Best Campaign to Support Local Trade category at this year’s Small Business Bor-ough awards. The news on the success of last year’s work has come through as the council gears up to support more town cen-tres this year through a mix-ture of fairs and markets being held in West Ealing, Acton, Hanwell, Ealing, Southall and Greenford. The council

Ealing Council has won a pres-tigious award in recognition for its outstanding delivery of the NHS Health Check pro-gramme. The award was pre-sented by Heart UK, a charity providing guidance and educa-tion to healthcare professionals and families about cholesterol and heart disease. The ceremo-ny was hosted by The British Journal of Primary Care Nurs-ing and the Primary Care Car-diovascular Journal.

The NHS Health Check pro-gramme began in 2009, and addresses the top seven caus-es of preventable early death: smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, al-cohol consumption, poor diet and raised cholesterol. Health-care professionals discuss the results of the checks with pa-tients and offer support to help lower risk where necessary.

In 2013/14 the number of

London businesses are invited to a free event at which Houn-slow Council’s Supply Chain Management team will explain how to tender for work with the council.

The session is taking place at the council’s Civic Centre, Lampton Road, Hounslow, Middlesex, TW3 4DN on 28 November 2014, 9am - 1pm

Attendees will benefit from:• an overview of tendering documentation• workshops to learn how to submit successful tenders

LEADER of Hounslow Coun-cil, Cllr Steve Curran and Cllr Sue Sampson signed up to the white ribbon campaign today as part of UN International Day for the Elimination of Vi-olence Against Women.

Cllr Curran said: “I’m proud to support this campaign. All of us have a responsibility and duty to stand up and speak out against all forms of violence, oppression and discrimination against women.”

Waste crews this week collect-ed excess rubbish that was left out in black bags or in bins that aren’t wheelie bins. From next week, they won’t collect waste left in black bags or alternative bins.

Cllr Curran added: “One of the main reasons for introducing wheelie bins, apart from in-creasing recycling rates, is to also help make Hounslow’s streets cleaner, preventing vermin from ripping open black bags and leaving rubbish strewn on pavements and verg-es.”

Many residents have already said how much they love their new wheelies.

In Hounslow they said:

• “Great, much easier to put out, less spillage, keep away vermin, keep it going.”

• “Congratulations a well-run initiative, much cleaner for us personally and I have seen less rats down the road.”

• “Brilliant service, expand so that everyone in Hounslow has a wheeled bin.”

• “Best ever idea that happened on our street, the street looks much cleaner and tidier.”

• “Keep it up for introducing the wheeled bin for cleaner, safer and pollution free envi-ronment.”

If you would like to share a bin with a neighbour or you and your neighbours want a small-er number of bins, this can be arranged.

Please email: [email protected] with your address, the number of flats and the number of bins you would like to receive.

Our assisted collection ser-vice helps residents who are not able to move their wheelie bins, especially older or dis-abled people.

For this service call Hounslow Council on: 020 8583 2000 or email [email protected]

If you are already receiving the assisted collection service this will continue and you do not need to contact us again.

Cllr Sampson, whose sister was murdered by her estranged husband, said: “Violence against women is violence against humanity. Not only does it inflict physical wounds on those who suffer from it, it mentally scars women and their families.”

35 per cent of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and or sexual vio-lence in their lifetime with up to seven in ten women facing

this abuse in some countries.

It is estimated that up to 30 million girls under the age of 15 remain at risk from female genital mutilation, and more than 130 million girls and women have undergone the procedure worldwide.

By donating warm clothes, hats, scarves and gloves, you can help make the winter cold a little more tolera-ble. A small donation is all we need to make a big difference.”

“The generosity of all those who donated last year was overwhelming and a wonderful reflection of the true Christmas spirit. Let’s show the same lev-el of generosity and support this year.”

Local charities St Mungo’s Broadway and Acton Home-less Concern will be support-ing the council appeal and will help distribute the clothing.

Elizabeth Ursell, manager of St Mungo’s Broadway outreach team in Ealing, said: “We help people sleeping rough all year round but for anyone on the streets in freezing tempera-tures it can be life-threatening. Our main priority is helping people off the streets into ac-

commodation, and tackling the problems that led them to sleep rough, but donations like these can make a significant differ-ence to helping people feel bet-ter during very difficult times.”

Ian Breen, manager of Acton Homeless Concern has also called for donations of unwant-ed clean sleeping bags and duvets. He said: “Clean du-vets and sleeping bags are also required to help keep people warm this winter. You can nev-er underestimate these small acts of kindness and the impact that they have on others.”

Donations can be dropped off at Ealing Town Hall, New Broadway, Ealing during: Monday-Friday between 8am-9pm; Saturday between 9am-5pm and Sunday between 9am-3pm.

NHS Health Checks received in Ealing reached 13,023 – the highest in London and the third highest nationally.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor, Ealing’s cabinet member for adults, health and wellbeing, said: “We’re working hard to ensure our residents have ac-cess to good health services when they need them, and we’re also encouraging healthy lifestyles that can help pre-vent some illnesses in the first place. So I am delighted Eal-ing has been recognised for its outstanding service in delivery of the NHS Health Check Pro-gramme.

“My particular thanks go to Dr Sapna Chauhan from our public health team, whose ex-cellent work on NHS Health Checks is helping make Ealing a healthier borough.”

People aged between 40 to 74

years-old, who have not had an NHS Health Check in the last five years and have not already been diagnosed with certain conditions or risk fac-tors, will be invited for a free NHS Health Check.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor add-ed: “I encourage everyone to take up the offer of a free NHS Health Check. If you are diagnosed as at risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes or kidney disease, the good news is these conditions are often preventable through simple changes to your lifestyle, such as increasing your levels of ac-tivity, watching what you eat and stopping smoking.”

The free NHS Health Check looks at vascular or circulato-ry health and works out a per-son’s risk of developing some of the most disabling – but pre-ventable – illnesses.

is also encouraging small busi-nesses in the borough to take part in Small Business Satur-day on 6 December. In 2013, Ealing Council part-nered with small businesses in Acton and Greenford, to run a series of fairs to increase foot-fall and spend in the town cen-tres. The fairs featured enter-tainment, including live music, a treasure hunt linked to shop windows, and a best dressed window competition.Businesses in both town cen-

tres ran a series of joint pro-motions, with 25 businesses in Acton and 18 in Greenford par-ticipating. Independent busi-nesses were given the oppor-tunity to offer promotions for their business that were then turned into Christmas themed promotional materials, allow-ing free publicity that was cir-culated by Ealing Council. The fairs offered businesses the opportunity to participate in a ‘Best Dressed Window Competition’ where competi-

tion winners were publically announced on stage and fea-tured in the council’s Around Ealing magazine.Event themes at the fairs, in-cluded: a treasure hunt, San-ta’s grotto, festive stalls, live music, face painting and chil-dren’s entertainment.Council leader, Councillor Ju-lian Bell said: ”The council wants to support and see Eal-ing businesses succeed and work together where possible. The fairs have created a new,

fun and interactive way to do this, that not only support each other but gets the communi-ty involved to become more aware of the great things that are locally on offer in Ealing.”As a result of businesses’ pos-itive feedback an autumn fair was delivered in Acton in Sep-tember 2014, which had an in-creasing number of businesses taking part in promotions.Among the events taking place this year are:The Avenue Christmas Party - Thursday, 4 December, from 6pm, The Avenue, West EalingGreenford Christmas Market - Sat-urday, 6 December, 11am-4pm,

Idling is when a vehicle’s en-gine stays running unneces-sarily when stationary. This pollutes the environment and it is illegal on a public road. The Road Traffic (Vehicle Emis-sions) (Fixed Penalty) (En-gland) Regulations 2002, state that if a driver doesn’t turn off

their engine after being spoken to, they are liable for a £20 fixed penalty notice. In an initial one-month trial, two enforcement officers will be patrolling the Horn Lane area of Acton from 1 Decem-ber until 1 January. They will work together; approaching

drivers who are seen to be idling and ask them to comply with the law. Drivers who re-fuse will be issued with fixed penalty notices. Signs will also be put up in the area reminding drivers of the law. The idling legislation covers all vehicles on public roads

including buses, taxis and pri-vate cars. It does not apply to vehicles moving slowly due to road works or congestion, ve-hicles stopped at traffic lights, vehicles under test or repair or defrosting a windscreen.

LOCAL NEWS. LOCAL NEWS.

There has already been media coverage of the as-sault that we have had on a woman in Dukes Avenue on the 15th November at 2 o’clock in the morning. On the 24th November another two ladies were assaulted, one in Fishers Lane and one in Kingscote Road, just over the border, in Ealing at about 6.30 in the evening.

The suspect was last seen running off towards St Al-bans Avenue. This is a very unusual occurrence for the area and we are, not sur-prisingly, working hard to catch the culprit . We believe the same suspect may be responsible for all these offences. He is de-scribed as being white, 5ft 4ins to 5ft 9ins, aged 25 to 30, stocky or athletic build with brown hair. During the assaults he has been wearing a grey style beanie hat and he also spoke in a foreign language. We have been focusing our patrols in the areas involved and we will be passing out wit-ness appeal leaflets over the next few days. If any-body has any information, please contact DC Emma Pestridge at Hounslow CID on Tel: 0208 247 6650.

branch colleagues for a week. They were patrolling around Turnham Green tube and down the High Road. They are an ex-cellent visible presence and I hope some people had a chance to see them and stroke the hors-es.

We have also had some success recently in our operations to target motor vehicle crime. On the 18th November three peo-ple were arrested in Grosvenor Road, W4 for having items on them to use in theft from cars, or, as we call it ‘going equipped’. This area has had several such crimes recently and the investigation on these three continues.

On the 25th November a keen eyed member of the public spotted somebody looking in to cars in Burlington Lane, and thinking this suspicious, phoned the police. Officers ar-rived and spotted the male who ran off. The officers gave chase and he was detained. Two cars were found broken in to nearby for which he was arrested.

Identifying and arresting sus-pects is an excellent way to combat these offences, but pre-vention is even better. I know I get boring saying this all the time, but do not leave anything valuable or anything that may look as if it may be valuable in cars and always make sure they are secure.

On a different note, Houn-slow police are running a campaign to get kind heart-ed people to buy presents for children in care across the borough. This is run-ning until the 14th Decem-ber and anybody can regis-ter their interest by e mail or by taking a tag off the tree as it tours the borough. They will be then be given a boy or girl to buy for and all they will know is the child’s age and gender. No more than £20 should be spent and the gift can be left at either Hounslow or Chiswick police station. It is an anonymous gift, but one that will be very grate-fully received.

If you wish to buy a gift, please e mail: [email protected]

The last wedding fair held in February, saw more than 500 people attend, with happy cou-ples receiving exclusive access to a wide range of suppliers

Situated opposite Chiswick Park underground station, Gunnersbury Triangle has been managed by London Wildlife Trust as a Nature Re-serve since 1985. The Triangle

Pledge To Challenge Council On Including Affordable Homes In Upcoming Developments

Brentford Waterside Developers Refuse To Meet With Residents-Ballymore Decline Request

More Planes At Heathrow Would “Not Be Good For Us”

Mary Macleod MP Urges Chiswick Residents To Support Small Shops And Businesses This Christmas

New figures show big increase in affordable homes. Mary Macleod has welcomed new figures showing that 1,350 more affordable homes have been built in Hounslow since 2010.

Over 200,000 new affordable homes have been built across England and the figures show Britain is now building more homes than at any time since 2007.

Mary said:

“Under the previous Government, falling levels of housebuilding meant families look-ing for good quality, affordable homes were unable to find one. 230,000 homes were given planning permission in the last year alone. Also I was delighted to hear the Prime Minister announce that a new Conservative government will build 100,000 new starter homes, for first time buyers only, which will be 20% cheaper than the market price. This will be fantastic for aspiring home owners in Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth, Osterley and Hounslow.”

Mary also pledged to challenge Hounslow Council on affordable homes for all future developments. She added:

“We are continuing to see huge regeneration, particularly in Brentford, with new housing developments and schools on the horizon. With every new development, I wanted to make sure that the Council have fully consid-ered maximising affordable housing. This is a big priority for local people and I will hold the Council to account on their behalf.”

Brentford High Street has been in desperate need of renewal for many years, so it is no surprise that the redevelopment project has been welcomed by both Mary and local peo-ple. Mary has made requests to meet again with Ballymore to discuss the update on the development of Brentford High Street.

A Ballymore spokesperson told Mary:

“Given the significant level of public consul-tation that has occurred on this project to date and the considerable level of public support in favour of the scheme we do not consider it appropriate for our company to re-engage in further public debate at this late stage in the planning process…”

Mary wanted to use the opportunity to meet with Ballymore to represent local residents and groups, including the Brentford High Street Steering Group, who had written with questions and concerns about the project.

Mary said:

“I am disappointed that Ballymore has re-fused to meet me and local people so I can bring to their attention the concerns some residents have with the plans. There are many unanswered questions, which residents have spoken to me about. I would, therefore, en-courage everyone who wants to have their points of view heard to attend the Planning Committee Meeting on at 7:30pm Thursday 27th November in The Lampton Park Confer-ence Centre at the Civic Centre.”

In the meantime, Mary said she will continue to push for a meeting with the developers so that residents’ concerns are represented at the highest level.

She added:

“This is our one chance to make Brentford brilliant – so residents should truly be at the heart of decision making.”

As the Prime Minister’s Small Business Am-bassador for London, Mary Macleod MP is joining forces with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to encourage local residents to do their Christmas shopping in Chiswick.

Mary commented:

“We have some fantastic independent shops and businesses on our High Streets, some-thing that contributes to the unique character of our area. We all need to do our bit to sup-port them so they can continue to grow. I hope you will join me to take the ‘Keep Trade Lo-cal London Challenge’ as you do your Christ-mas shopping this year”.

“Do also join myself and Cllr Paul Lynch in

Chiswick if you can for the switching on of the Christmas lights outside the George IV on Chis-wick High Road on Thursday 27th November. We will be entertained by carols and many of the local shops will stay open late that night to help us get our festive shopping underway.”

Small Business Saturday is an initiative first started in the U.S. to encourage people to sup-port their local small, independent businesses at this time of year. It has the backing of the Prime Minister and all political parties. The FSB are offering prizes of up to £500 for shopping with participating businesses in the fortnight leading up to Small Business Saturday which is being held on 6th December this year. For more details please see www.keeptradelocal.london.

Mary added:

“If you have a small business and would like to get involved in Small Business Saturday, please see www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com for more information. I looking forward to being out and about around all of our High Streets on Small Business Saturday to visit as many small businesses as I can and I hope to see many of you then.”

Pupils at Chatsworth Primary tell Aviation Min-ister and Mary Macleod MP how the noise from planes disrupts their learning.

Pupils and staff from Chatsworth Primary school took time out from their lessons yesterday to tell the Aviation Minister, Robert Goodwill MP, lo-cal MP Mary Macleod and the Chief Executive and Councillors from Hounslow Council about the impact of planes overhead.

Mary commented: “I want all children across the country to have the same quality of learning in the classroom and there is no doubt that being near Heathrow has a negative impact. I think Heathrow could do more to improve the situation at our local schools and be more supportive in finding the right insulation and ventilation approach for each school. Listening to the children and teach-ers today, I find it very difficult to believe that we are even considering sending more planes over the heads of these young people.”

Volunteers are essential to the work of the Trust, both here and across more than 40 other reserves. This short film shows the important contribution they make to the conservation

of wild spaces and wildlife in London. Volunteering can be a fun way to get some fresh air, improve your fitness and meet like-minded people, as well as discover some beautiful nature reserves.

Barrecore’s studios in Mayfair, Chelsea and Wimbledon are the leading homes of health, fitness and wellbeing in London. Chiswick residents now have the opportunity to join this community with the exciting launch of the bar-recoreCHISWICK standalone studio on the 15th November 2014.

Turnham Green is home to the fourth barrecore London studio and gives West London residents local access to classes for the first time. Not only will regular barrecore classes allow them to achieve the famous strong and lean ‘barre body’, it will also bring about a sense of health and wellbeing that is unique to this practice.

barrecoreCHISWICK boasts two studio rooms, and a personal training room with Reformer Pi-lates equipment, as well as showers and chang-ing facilities stocked with everything one needs to freshen up after class.

barrecore has teamed up with local Chiswick businesses Sweaty Betty and hotel and members club, Highroad House to celebrate the launch of the new studio. Promotional classes will take place at both venues from mid-October to of-fer residents the opportunity to try the classes, ahead of the studio opening. There are limited spaces available which can be booked by High-road House members and through the Sweaty Betty website.

The Chiswick studio will offer a range of bar-recore classes each taught by Founder and CEO Niki Rein’s team of rigorously trained instruc-tors. Morning, lunchtime, evening and weekend sessions are available to fit into even the busiest of schedules.

barrecoreMIXED is the signature barrecore class, offering a low-impact, full-body interval training programme incorporating isometric ex-ercises, alternated with stretching. Movements use the individual’s body weight as resistance and / or small equipment and high repetition to

overload the muscle and then stretch it out to create a longer-looking and lean physique.

“barrecore is all about community and Chis-wick reflects just that - an amazing community of families and local businesses helping the area grow and thrive. It’s a beautiful area of London that we cannot wait to be a part of.”

Niki Rein, barrecore Founder & CEO

barrecoreCHISWICK will be a welcome addi-tion to the West London fitness scene, giving residents the opportunity to achieve the perfect barre body

barrecore Signature Classes

Signature barrecore classes are an intelligent fusion of high-energy, low impact movements inspired by ballet, yoga and pilates, utilising the ballet barre to perform small isometric move-ments and the bodyweight as resistance. High repetition works the muscles to capacity for a full-body, fat-burning interval-training program followed by static stretches, which help to build a lean, toned physique.

Each 60-minute workout targets all major mus-cle groups and improves posture and alignment. In a short amount of time the body is reshaped into the highly coveted ‘barre body’ - strong core muscles, a toned physique, long and lean mus-cles, a lifted seat, increased strength and endur-ance, flexibility, improved body alignment and bone density.

La Mancha In Chiswick - Best Tapas In London?• Georgie HolmanAbout 26 years ago when I was living in East Putney, I spent an evening at La Mancha and it was really nice. A long time ago I admit, but I do remember it. I’m clearly not suffering from dementia yet. About a year ago it upped and followed me to Chiswick, and thank heaven because us Chiswick lot have now been blessed with this lovely tapas restaurant. I love tapas because you can have a bit of what you fancy…if you know what I mean - a bit of this and a bit of that and ooh, what’s that there , I’ll try a bit of that as well if that’s ok?Guest and I arrive and are welcomed by the lovely Victor. Seat-ed and swiftly asked what we would like to drink. Perfect! Vic-tor suggests that we try a bottle of the Pazo de Marinan 2012. It’s fresh, it’s fruity and its 13% vol. Hic. We start with Bread, chopped fresh tomatoes, garlic and olive oil or to the Spanish speaking readers, Rebanata De Pan Con Tomate. The flavours of summer come flooding through. Real-ly nice and great with the chilled fruity wine.Victor takes it upon himself to select and guide. So firstly, he comes to the table with crispy aubergines with honey and Ro-mesco sauce which is from Tarragona, Catalonia. This sauce is made up of a nut and red pepper-base with roasted garlic, olive oil, bitxo (don’t ask me how it’s pronounced) peppers and roasted tomatoes. The aubergines remind me of giant potato crisps and the sauce is what really makes it interesting. We then have the Calamares Fritos, (deep fried squid with tar-tar sauce) which is excellent. The Char-grilled octopus, tiger prawn & creamy potatoes with paprika oil is a must. I could easily sit down and order 2 of these dishes and scoff the lot, not because I’m greedy but be-cause it is bursting with fantastic flavours. Ok, maybe a bit greedy but its SOOO gorgeous. We also try the grilled Mediterranean prawns, garlic and pars-ley olive oil, again very tasty.I don’t know if I would order quite so many dishes as this just for the starters but it’s great to have the opportunity and then spread the word!I feel adventurous and order slow cooked Iberian cheeks, Dau-phonoise potatoes and caramelised onions. It is rich in flavour and I would definitely try it again but for me, it would be on a cold winter’s day. It’s very comforting food and extremely tender meat.Guest goes for the roasted suckling pig with apple sauce and a Jenga tower of fat chips. Good choice too. It is cooked to perfection. I can’t fault it.Finally for our pudding it has to be Crème Caramel. 2 spoons please……………Yum

My philosophy is that some of the best things in life are the simplest. Uncomplicated, unfussy and that’s why La Mancha works so well. Hands down, this is the best Tapas I have en-joyed outside of rural Spain. The prices aren’t silly either. It’s an interesting and varied menu that certainly gets 10/10 from me………….oh and from Guest too.

Dear Readers,What a year it has been!

First off, let’s talk about the world of sales. At the beginning of the year all I can say is that the property market was going absolutely mad, where at one stage we had 73 viewings over two days for one unmodernised property! That resulted in achieving £50,000 over the asking price - which the vendor was very happy about as I am sure anyone would be! At the present moment buyers are being much more cautious and we are even finding that some buyers are trying to renegotiate at the last moment, as they are feeling they are paying over the odds from the start. The market I feel is now levelling out and finding a natural level. Anyone placing their property on the market now needs to make sure that the correct agent is chosen, and one who will not over price the property and try to achieve prices that were seen much earlier in the year. What we have found useful is to get offers ‘in excess of’ and then let the market decide the true price. In the future I think anybody would need a crystal ball, with the elections coming up it is any-body’s guess what will happen with the market, but I am confident that prices will remain steady.

In the world of lettings we have definitely found that more properties have come on, despite that, rental figures have remained buoyant but not seen a dramatic increase. What we have found is that tenants are staying longer. Good fundamentals are very important this time of year, with christmas just around the corner, and good presentation is vital.

Should any readers have any questions in re-gards to selling or letting their property I would be more than happy to answer any enquires you have. All you need to do is e-mail on [email protected] or call the office on 020 8994 8441 and if you have time then pop in for per-sonal chat and a coffee.

All the best,

Hugh BeazerHugh Beezer is owner of Borthwicks Estate Agents, 3 Chiswick Rd, Station Parade, Chiswick, London W4 5NF020 8994 8441 www.borthwicks.co.uk

From the 1st of October all estate agents legally had to be-come members of a new legislation, which helps to protect you as the consumer. The Property Ombudsman claim that their aim is to improve all standards within the property pro-fession, providing their customers with a fair and impartial service to resolve problems between consumers and agents.

The scheme ensures that all agencies must treat their clients fairly, and as a neutral, independent service tenants and land-lords will be able to take up any issues with them. Unresolved problems can be brought to them, and as they’re completely independent they can judge all the facts and listen to both sides of the story without bias.

The redress scheme covers a number of issues, including the protection of any confidential information and the treatment of its customers, ensuring equality of treatment in spite of race, gender and a number of other characteristics.

If agencies don’t sign up, or aren’t compliant with the rules of the Ombudsman, they could receive hefty fines of up to £5,000. Agencies will be policed, by secret shoppers and ran-dom official checks, to make sure they’re up to scratch.

Agencies are legally required to give their clients copies of the Ombudsman upon request, so if you are intending to buy, sell or let you should ask your agency for one.

Vesper Homes have been a member of The Property Om-budsman since they opened earlier this year. If you are plan-ning on using an agency you should be certain that they’re a member of The Property Ombudsman.

With over twenty years of experience in the property market, I believe that I am well placed to advise you on how the new Stamp Duty system will affect you and more to the point, how to achieve the best price for your home.

The changes to the Stamp Duty system will make some buyers better off, but potentially, some will be worse off. This can have a real effect on achieving a sale on your home.

You need the best advice.

With my experience, combined with the biggest network of any agent in London (over sixty branches so far) we at Winkworth in Chiswick are here to help you.

WINKWORTH CAN HELP YOU SELL YOUR HOME FOLLOWING THE STAMP DUTY ANNOUNCEMENT ON STAMP DUTY

If you are thinking of selling, then call me now. My advice is totally free and without obligation.

Well, we didn’t see that coming!

The chancellor, George Osbourne, today announced a complete revision of Stamp Duty. This isn’t a small change, or another band added as has been the case for many years now, but a ground up revision of the system.

What impact will this have on you as a vendor or a buyer?

If you’re buying a property for less than £925,000 it means that you are now better off. Potentially, you are better off to the tune of thousands of pounds.

If you are selling a property upto £925,000 and especially an apartment in the £400,000-£650,000 range, then your property has just become a lot more appealing to buyers. We

THE BUDGET AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU AS A VENDOR OR PURCHASER IN CHISWICK

may even see properties that were stuck just under the old £500,000 Stamp Duty threshold suddenly worth more as this was an artificial ‘glass ceiling’ to buyers going slightly over this figure.

If you are a vendor of a house in Chiswick worth over £1 mil-lion and certainly if your home is in excess of £2 million, then now, more than ever, you need an agent who has the experi-ence to get you the best price from the buyer and who knows how to sell your property.

That’s where I can help you…

EXCLUSivE CHiSWiCk NURSERY AND PRE-SCHOOL OPENS iTS DOORS WiTH PARLiAMENTARY SEAL OF APPROvALAN exclusive nursery and pre-school has opened its doors in South-West London, and has been given the parliamentary seal of approval. This new facility has introduced a range of innovative childcare enhancements to families in the region and has been designed by Busy Bees’ childcare professionals, an organisation with over 30 years’ experience of delivering quality childcare in the UK.

New services include ‘Travel Light’ - which caters for tube-bound parents who are time-short and unable to lug heavy baggage, as well as baby, across the London Metro - and quality ‘Take Away meals’ - which in-house chef, Stephen Montague, will prepare for parents who want to feed their child nutritionally balanced food, but lack the time to pull it all together.

The facility offers tailor-made baby, toddler, two year old and pre-school packages that cov-er every aspect of quality care provision. Parents will be able to seek support from in-house childcare professionals, in ad-dition to daily liaison with their child’s key worker. A dedicated parents’ suite will also be avail-able, where mums and dads can meet with their peers and discuss the priorities and privi-leges of parenting today.

Parent Aengus Omalley vis-ited with his eight-and-a-half month old son Sean. He said: “I have visited for the first time today and am really impressed with everything I have seen. My wife just fell in love with this nursery and we knew that this is where Sean had to come for the very best care.”

Nursery manager Roxane Lovell said: “It was an honour to meet the MP and we were delighted that she came along to cut the ribbon and declare us officially open. We were

More than 26,000 Freedom Pass holders in Hounslow Bor-ough will need to renew their older person’s pass in the next few months.Older people across Hounslow, whose Freedom Passes will ex-pire on 31 March next year, are receiving a letter in the coming weeks from London Councils explaining how to renew their pass.

The Freedom Pass allows older adults to travel on public trans-port for free across the capital – as well as on local bus ser-vices throughout England at certain times – and is Europe’s most comprehensive free travel scheme.

Pass holders are being encour-aged to renew online, which is a straightforward process and only takes a few minutes. Any-one who is unable to renew online can return the form en-closed with their letter by post. Please note Freedom Passes cannot be renewed at the Post Office.

Cllr Steve Curran, leader of the council, said: “Anyone whose older person’s pass expires on 31 March next year is entitled to a new one, provided they still live in London – it’s just a matter of waiting until your letter arrives and following the instructions.

“New passes can be used as soon as they arrive, there’s no need to wait for the old ones to expire. You should destroy the old pass when your new one arrives.

“Anyone who has not yet re-ceived their letter but knows someone who has shouldn’t panic – it’s on its way and will be with you by the end of De-cember.

“This process has been careful-ly tested and we are confident it’s easy to use – but if anyone

really pleased with the number of families that came along to take a look at what we have to offer and we are thrilled with all the fantastic feedback we’ve received. It’s been a really ex-citing year and it’s wonderful that we have created something that our local parents want and need.”

Marg Randles, Managing Di-rector of Busy Bees, said: “Balancing a career and a busy family life is a difficult art to master. We recognise this and have worked tirelessly to de-vise a nursery where children’s individual needs are met and exceeded and parents feel sup-ported in every way possible.

”We’re extremely proud to have opened the doors of The Chiswick Nursery and Pre-School, fully equipped with top of the range facilities and managed by such an experi-enced team of qualified child-care practitioners. A great deal of thought and investment has gone into making this en-hanced concept in childcare a reality and I believe, as a par-ent and grandparent myself, that what we’re offering to families in the Chiswick area is second to none.”

While online renewal is the preferred method, pass holders may still renew their Freedom Pass through the post using a paper form which is enclosed with their renewal letter. This is to be retuned to London Councils at Renewal 2015, ESP Systex, 68 – 74 Holder-ness Road Hull HU9 1ED.

Residents who have passes issued on the grounds of dis-abilities that are due to expire in March 2015 will also be af-fected by this renewal process; however they will not be able to renew their pass on line.

London Councils will issue these passes once notified of the eligibility by the local au-thority.

LABOUR’S RUTH CADBURY SUPPORTS SMALL BUSiNESS

“Chiswick has many great in-dependent shops especially in in Turnham Green Terrace and Devonshire Road. They are now benefiting from the half-hour free parking which Hounslow instigated following our conversations with those shopkeepers” says Labour can-didate for Brentford and Isle-worth Ruth Cadbury

“I’m pleased to be support-ing Small Business Saturday” Ruth said. “Small businesses are the life-blood of our econo-my and there are so many busi-nesses locally that we could all be supporting; such as South Street coffee and ice cream shop in Isleworth and Russell’s cobblers and key cutting on Brentford High Street. Both are examples of independent busi-nesses set up by local people

Ealing and Hounslow Councils are inviting applications for the role of trustees to support the restoration of Gunnersbury Park and Museum by becom-ing volunteer members of a new charitable trust. Up to four appointments will be made to join the board of what will be the Gunnersbury Museum and Park Develop-ment Trust. Trustees will play an important role contributing to the multi-million pound redevelopment; ensuring the Grade II* listed, 186 acre site fulfils its potential to become a major heritage destination and community asset.Trust members will be expect-ed to use their skills and net-works to raise donations and funds to help conserve, trans-form and make more acces-sible the heritage, landscape, park land and sporting legacy of the estate. The Trust and its members will be supported by the combined professional bid writing team from Ealing and Hounslow Councils. Applicants will need to demon-strate a commitment to West London, passion for Gunners-bury Park and its spectacular

in competition from national chains. The SBS campaign is a great way of raising awareness and helping boost trade.” “So many local businesses are doing a fantastic job. They give us greater choice and that something a little bit special as well as employing many local people. We all need to put our hands in our pockets to back our local businesses. And it’s not just when doing the family shopping, but any-one who makes purchasing decisions for their workplace, should ‘think local’ first. Small businesses often provide better value for money and a more flexible service than the big companies such as for sta-tionery and catering. ” added Ruth.

Shadow Business Secretary

Chuka Umunna MP said: “Last year when I first called for the UK to have its own Small Busi-ness Saturday, I could not have envisaged what we managed to achieve. We helped create the biggest celebration of small business and entrepreneurs that the country has seen and it helped give a boost to their bot-tom line. We brought together a grass roots coalition including business organisations and local authorities to make it happen.

“On one of the busiest shopping days of the year Small Business Saturday puts a spotlight on the huge contribution of small busi-nesses and encourages people to buy from small shops and independent firms. This year we want it to be bigger and better. Please do put it in your diary.”

MUSiCiAN’S SEARCH FOR HOMELESS MAN WHO iNSPiRED CHRiSTMAS SONgOn a freezing December night in 2013, musician Joseph Baker had an unforgettable encounter with an elderly home-less man on the streets of Chiswick. Now he has turned the man’s heartbreaking story into a song set to take the Christ-mas charts by storm, Joseph is determined to find the man who inspired the track.

It was while walking home from a Christmas party that Joseph spotted the man sitting on the pavement in Chiswick, West London. Moved by a sense of Christmas spirit, the 33 year-old writer and musician decided to stop and talk to the man who introduced himself as Harry.

Amazingly, it turned out that the two men were both origi-nally from Dudley in the West Midlands and the conversa-tion that followed lasted over an hour as Joseph listened to Harry’s life story. “It was incredible,” recalls Joseph. “With-in less than a minute, he was telling me about his life on the street; his battle with alcohol addiction; but most of all, he waxed lyrical about the love of his life who had stuck by him through everything. They’d been together since they were teenagers and he spent his whole life promising to marry her,

until 2012 when she finally left him.

He was a lovely guy, but he had a very deep sadness about him.” Joseph never saw Harry again after that night, but the encounter made a profound impact. His band The Sticks have recorded a song based on Harry’s story which they are planning to release in time for Christmas with a 20% of the proceeds going to Crisis.

Joseph describes the song, ‘A Church On New Year’s Day’, as a folk ballad in the vein of ‘Fairytale Of New York’ and he is now trying to track down the man who inspired it. “This song is Harry’s story,” says Joseph. “It would not exist without him. My only wish is that I could find him again to say thank you. He was around 70 years old, with a grey beard and a small scar above his left eye. He also had the name Evie tattooed across his fingers. I’d love to play him the song. Fingers crossed, wherever he is this Christmas, he somehow gets to hear it.”

If you can help email [email protected]

‘A Church On New Year’s Day’ by The Sticks is released on Mon 1st December 2014.

At Least £250 Million To Make A Better HeathrowOver £200 million would be needed to insulate everyaf-fectedhome in Hounslow if Heathrow expanded according to new figures released today by Hounslow Council. The news comes after Leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Steve Curran spoke at a Public Dis-cussion event on the options for airport expansion hosted by the Airports Commission.

Cllr Steve Curran said: “We’re calling for a better not bigger airport which means better noise insulation for homes in Hounslow.

“We estimate this would cost around £200 million so Heath-row’s compensation package of £550 million across 14 local authorities is clearly not nearly enough.”

Cllr Curran also told the Air-ports Commission that while Hounslow Council washappy with the airport’s recent public commitment to the completion of their existing schools’ in-sulation programme by sum-mer 2015, he would continue to seek further improvements to benefit schools and local communities.Cllr Curran also called for Heathrow to sup-port the creation of anAviation Skills Academy.

He said: “Hounslow doesn’t want to see Heathrow close but the airport could do more. Heathrow employs tens of thousands of people in the lo-cal area. Losing it would be catastrophic to the local econ-omy.

“We want Heathrow to work with us to up-skill our work-

force and create an Aviation Skills Academy which would help ensure Hounslow resi-dents have the opportunity to become the engineers, air traf-fic controllers and pilots of the future.”

Cllr Curran also called for sub-stantial improvements to the public transport network ser-vicing the airports, in particu-lar the Piccadilly Line.

The council’s position of a night flight curfew between 11pm and 7am was strongly repeated to the Airports Com-mission.a

Ealing Council’s leader, Coun-cillor Julian Bell said;“With the restoration project poised to start early next year, the future for Gunnersbury Park and Museum has never looked brighter. It’s a very spe-cial place, much loved by both

Ealing and Hounslow residents so understandably we are look-ing for pretty special people to entrust its future to. “If you have a passion for Gunnersbury; along with the time and energy to help make this vital community asset even better; please do come forward and apply to become a trust member. You won’t regret it.”

Hounslow Council’s leader, Councillor Steve Curran said:“Becoming a Trustee at Gun-nersbury puts you right at the heart of west London’s most exciting park regeneration project, recently boosted by some £10 million of lottery funding. The role will require heavy-duty fundraising skills, but the reward will be in secur-ing a vibrant future for the park and museum for generations to come.”

Once all four new trustees are appointed, the Gunnersbury Museum and Park Develop-ment Trust will then make an application for Charity Regis-tration with the Charity Com-mission in February 2015.

HOMES&INTERIORS.

MAKING A POINT OF STYLE

IN CHISWICKA striking new show apartment at Chiswick Point, created by Design O.D., has already been attracting strong interest helping bring to life this elegant and contemporary collection of apartments from Bellway Homes.

The key to successful interior design is to create a style that relates to the location of the home and the people who would live in it. In designing the luxurious new show apartment at Chiswick Point, designer Ed O’Donnell from Design O.D. looked to the local area for his inspiration. There are deliberate touches that hint at nature and wildlife as the apartment overlooks the hidden green nature reserve of the Gunnersbury Triangle, but above all the home is designed to suit the aspirations and tastes of the well-heeled purchasers who would buy one of these stylish homes. Zoe Dobbs, Sales Manager of Bellway North London comments: “For house-hunters first impressions really do count which is why it is great to see the reactions when people see this show apartment for the first time. The new show apartment fabulously shows off how someone could make the most of the space – the interior design scheme has such character and panache it is hard not to be wowed.”

“We are also very pleased to announce that these properties are available with the Help to Buy scheme. With over 50% already sold, we encourage any potential purchasers to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

Chiswick Point is an exclusive collection of one, two and three bedroom apartments and three bedroom penthouses, which benefit from views over the Gunnersbury Triangle. This peaceful woodland is a green oasis full of wildlife, a fact that is echoed in details and patterns inside the show home such as subtle animal and nature inspired prints on cushions and artwork.

Set in the affluent and leafy neighbourhood of Chiswick, the atmosphere inside the show home is one of understated elegance, with luxurious materials and finishes included throughout. Ed O’Donnell explains: “The textures and fabrics were designed to shout ‘luxury’, so I chose mix of velvet and silks, wooden marquetry finishes and marble, as well as touches of gold and antique brass and leather. I wanted to strike a balance between modern design

and creating a welcoming space, so I’ve mixed in mid-century pieces to give a ‘lived in’ feeling.”

A sophisticated palette of greys and naturals is off-set by touches of richness in claret, gold and green. In the living area, an antique bronze screen gives a focal point with pieces of mirror in it that catch the light. Silk effect wallpapers in the bedrooms add luxury, while a mid-century design leather and wood armchair in one of the bedrooms epitomises the look of simple elegance. The beautiful interior design of the show apartment is complemented by the carefully considered layout of the home that makes the best use of light and space. Attention to detail is paramount throughout, demonstrated in everything from the choice of finishes to the stylish appliances in the kitchens and contemporary sanitaryware in the bathrooms. The home has its own private balcony accessed through sliding fully glazed doors from the living area, providing a pleasant outdoor spot to enjoy the green surroundings.Renowned for its quiet riverside location and vibrant local scene, Chiswick boasts an exceptional range of local amenities, including top restaurants, cafes, pubs and delicatessens. Shoppers will find independent retailers and high street chains on nearby Chiswick High Road, while those seeking open-space will find several parks nearby in addition to the Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve. There are the historic gardens at nearby Chiswick House to explore, Kew Gardens with the world’s largest collection of living plants and Gunnersbury Park with a miniature golf course. The apartments at Chiswick Point are also well positioned to benefit from the excellent transport links the area has to offer, with nearby Chiswick Park and Gunnersbury tube stations served by the District line and overground Gunnersbury (North London line) and Chiswick (Hounslow loop line) railway stations offering services to Waterloo. Junction 1 of the A4 is less than a mile away, with onward connection to the M4 providing access to Heathrow Airport and the country.

The new show apartment at Chiswick Point is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Prices at Chiswick Point start from £599,995 for a one bedroom apartment available with the Help to Buy scheme. For more information and to arrange a viewing of the show apartment, please call 0845 018 0715, email: [email protected] or visit: www.chiswickpoint.com

In response to increasing demand for high-quality, reliable care provision, a

new company that will provide high quality home care to people in the Ealing area has been launched.

Heritage Healthcare Ealing has received its registration from the Care Quality Commission and is ready to begin support-ing people across the local area who require support to remain living as independently as possible. The company is based in West Ealing and will be cre-ating new jobs across Ealing, Hillingdon and Chiswick for dedicated carers wanting to work in the local community.

Owner Daniela Coutinho, a resident of Hanwell, has a care background with consider-able experience as a carer and manager, her most recent position being a supervisor at a leading homecare provider in Ealing. She is now following her dream of operating her own business dedicated to improving the lives of people

Hounslow Council is searching for a social entrepreneur with a great retail business idea to bring a bigger buzz to Brent-ford High Street. The council is calling for expressions of inter-est in a shop unit backed by a package of business and finan-cial support.

The council is offering: • a well-presented retail unit with High Street frontage• a rent-free development pe-riod• 12 months business support• 80% business rates relief if constituted as a charity, and• a start-up grant condition-al to delivering specific social outcomes over first three years – and ideally beyond.

in need in the local com-munity. Working with, and supporting, Daniela will be her husband Ivan who was brought up in the Ealing area having attended school at St. Benedict’s. Ivan has a solid business background with a proven track record of success at Blue Chip companies based in London.

Daniela’s team includes a trained Care Coordinator and experienced, dedicated and friendly Carers who will undergo on-going training and professional development to deal with all the tasks required to deliver a high-quality service tailored to individual client requirements detailed in their personalised care plans.

Heritage Healthcare Ealing will arrange for carers to assist people in their own homes with practical and personal tasks. This may be for a short while, after an accident or an illness, or it might be long term due to age, disability or other health problems.

Hounslow Council Seek Social Entrepreneur To Launch Pioneering Retail Business

ing the entrepreneur to engage with local residents and busi-nesses and to create a financial-ly sustainable service, which attracts customers to Brentford and which gives something back to the community. The council requires a robust fi-nancial plan and for applicants to have the drive and resourc-es to launch the enterprise. The business would ideally fit the planning class of the shop which is retail, but could apply for a change of use. The premis-es presently branded ‘Brentford Works’ is not suitable for hot food take away use.

Cabinet Member for Com-munities and Economic De-velopmennt, Councillor Sue Sampson, explains: “We are of-fering budding entrepreneurs

a unique opportunity to set up shop in an upcoming part of West London and boost the lo-cal retail offer. It’s a great chance to get your business idea off the ground and to give something back to the community”.

The deadline for expression of interest is 22nd December 2014 and more extensive busi-ness plans will be expected by 1st week in January 2015 from those shortlisted before pre-sentation to a selection panel mid-January.

For an applicants’ pack, cadi-dates are asked to www. in-vesthounslow.com or contact [email protected] or [email protected].

It will also offer Supported Living services to people with physical disabilities or learning difficulties. This includes helping people go to work, attend a day centre, participate in leisure activities or visit the shops.

Heritage Healthcare Ealing will also be providing a round the clock live-in care service, which will enable people to re-main independent for as long as possible in the comfort and familiarity of their own home. Live-in care is an alternative to a residential or nursing home where carers live with clients and provide one-to-one assis-tance to offer freedom, choice and control to do what they want, when they want.Daniela Coutinho said: “At Heritage Healthcare Ealing we pride ourselves on being car-ing people who are committed to working with our clients to provide a service they are completely happy with.

“I have seen the joy that comes from enabling clients to stay in their own homes, safe in the knowledge that our profes-sional staff will provide them with the support they need to continue to live full and satis-fying lives.

“This joy is what drives us to do all we can to make sure our clients get a high-quality, reliable and trustworthy ser-vice and we pride ourselves on being flexible enough to always find solutions to fit the differ-ent needs of all our clients.”

It has been a few months since First Class Learning – Chis-wick began Saturday classes in rooms at ArtsEd. on Bath Road, and now they will be opening a new week day cen-tre in Chiswick from January!

If your child lacks confidence in maths, English or both subjects, or is not sufficiently challenged in school, then First Class Learning can design a programme which meets their needs.

First Class Learning – Chis-wick offers personalised maths and English programmes to young people from 5 to 16 year olds. Each child takes a free diagnostic assessment in one or both subjects, allowing the centre managers to construct the perfect, individualised pro-gramme to suit your child’s needs.

What makes First Class Learn-ing different is that the pro-grammes are designed to meet the demands of the national curriculum and cater for all ages and abilities. The work ensures that students gain a firm foundation, preparing them with the skills to prog-ress in school, and equipping

Charles Coombs and his fami-ly moved to Chiswick in 1911 and he soon became a Church-warden at the recently built and consecrated St Michael’s.

Hugh continued, ‘as a result of your exhibition, and, more es-pecially, your research - I have exchanged emails and letters with Sallie Vallins (we were previously unknown to one another) and my wife and I are planning to attend the Remem-brance Service when we hope to say hello to her for the first time.’

Sallie Vallins added ‘I received a letter from Heroes of Chis-wick researcher, Steve New-bold early this year and I was delighted to meet him and Mar-tine, and visit Chiswick and the church again. I was able to tell them about my father, Ralph Coombs, my grandmother,

Louisa Coombs and show him a few of the pictures I had.

I didn’t know much about Les-lie and Frank and didn’t have any photographs of them ei-ther, so you can imagine my delight to hear from Hugh Bailey, to meet him at the Remembrance Service and see the photographs he has of Leslie and Frank Coombs in military uniform.’ Sallie is the granddaughter of the first vic-ar of St Michael’s - Revd L. About St Michael’s Church El-mwood Road, Chiswick, W4 3DY

and challenges of day to day life as a London vicar.

If you like Rev, you’ll be glad to know that the series returns to our screens next Monday (24 March). And also, I hope you’ll be glad to see the start of this new column – that will provide an insight into the life of one of your real live local Revs.

I’ve been Vicar of St Michael’s Chiswick for just over two years – and have, so far, just about managed to avoid over-indulging on the mulled wine before Midnight Mass. But Hollander’s portrayal of what it’s like to be a London vicar is astonishingly accurate.

We don’t, of course, have a sin-ister black-gloved archdeacon. But the everyday business of encouraging people to see the good in life, to be thankful, to rise to the challenge of being

more than we might be – what it really means to live a life of faith – is just the same. Yes, stuff happens, people hurt us and we mess things up our-selves – but to have faith is to retain hope. Hope that, in the end, kindness does make a dif-ference, justice does ultimately triumph, love does win.

Those are big statements and you may feel sceptical about their truth. But when we open our eyes, we catch a glimpse of those truths all around us. Let me give you some examples.

First, kindness. Just a couple of hours ago, a member of my congregation knocked on my door. She told me to put on my coat and then she bundled me into her car. I’ve never been kidnapped by a member of the congregation before. Although many have threatened to drag me away from my desk, this was the first time someone

literally did that. Anyway, she drove me to Kew and we shared a cup of coffee and a chat in the Orangery. Then she bundled me back in the car and returned me to my desk - all within less than the space of an hour. When I asked her why she’d done this, she said she just felt I needed to get out and see the spring flowers. I said thank you – it had been a real gift, a gift of kindness – and it has made a huge difference to my day.

Then, justice. Last Sunday, we were visited at St Michael’s by Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal from Jerusalem. Born a Pal-estinian in Nazareth in 1937, Bishop Riah has lived through the establishment of the state of Israel and all the conflicts there have been and that continue in

that region since that time. He has worked tirelessly through-out his life to help bring peace and justice in his homeland - by working with Israelis, Arabs, Jews, Muslims and Christians. He has been forced to leave his home, sometimes banned from travelling, been ridiculed and persecuted – but he has never given up the hope that justice will ultimately triumph. That one day the walls in the West Bank will come down. And it’s courageous, faithful, hope-ful men and women like Bish-op Riah, who will bring those walls down in the end.

And finally, love. A dear friend lies inert in hospital, after suf-fering a terrible stroke. It’s a dreadful thing, he’s only in his fifties and I can’t think of any words that might comfort

his family. But his daughter sits beside him in the hospi-tal. She doesn’t say much or do anything. She just sits be-side him and I watch, as she puts her hand in his. Whatever happens, we can be sure - love wins.

Council To Waive Parking Charges On Christmas Eve

Chiswick High Road Action group Claim To Have Uncovered Images That Lend Lease Tried To Hide

Hounslow Council, Cllr Steve Curran said: “Many people are still struggling to make ends meet so we would thought we would lend a helping hand.

“Hopefully this small present from us will help those on the desperate last minute shop buy-ing their loved ones something a bit special this Christmas.”

The news comes as the council announced a series of Christ-mas events today starting this Saturday when the mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Corinna Smart will switch on Christmas lights by Holy Trinity Church in Hounslow High Street from at 4.30pm.

Other seasonal events include:

• Saturday 22 November, 4.30pm Winter Lights – a celebration by Holy Trinity Church • Thursday 27 November, 6pm Christmas Lights George IV Pub, Chiswick High Road, experience festive cheer Full-ers style with carols and other entertainment, shire horses, mulled wine and mince pies• Saturday 6 December – Hounslow market launch• Saturday 6 December, 11am-7pm Wander among the giant illuminated tulips, Bell Square • Friday 28 November, Open from 4.30-7.30pm Fire Gar-den, Brentford Lock - discover a magical world of fiery flow-ers, flaming trees and burning bull rushes • Sunday 7 and 14 December, 10-4pm Christmas Market and Festive Carols Brentford Market Place• Saturday 13 December, 2-8pm Christmas Market, Swan Court, Shrewsbury Court and Isleworth Village Green, Old Isleworth

CHRAG are claiming “the controversial aspects of the proposed development have been downplayed and hidden, so that most people are un-

aware of the impact that this development would have.”

According to CHRAG Lend Lease are in hot water for misleading the public in the visualisations on their Heygate development at Elephant and Castle. It seems that similar tactics are being deployed here.

Chiswick High Road Action Group has today published its objection to the proposals by developer Lend Lease for the high-rise development of Empire House Tower on Chiswick High Road, and for tower blocks behind on Essex Place.

CHRAG CLAIM:

The developer, Lend Lease, praises Chiswick’s heritage, its listed buildings, its low-rise houses and shops, its historic church and green spaces. But if offers nothing in return; only to increase the size of Empire House by two storeys and by bolt-on balconies, and to shoe-horn an inappropriately large tower block immediately behind this along with a row of houses (no gardens), which will back onto a delivery lane re-stocking Sainsbury’s.

Lend Lease’s much vaunted claims to provide improved public realm for pedestrians and cyclists are spurious.

The 137 new dwellings and 9 retail units will use this ‘public realm’ for access and deliv-eries.

CHRAG believes that this planning application ignores the opportunities for develop-ment on this key site consis-tent with the Character and Context Study for Chiswick in the Local Plan, as well as local, regional, and national planning policy.

A spokesperson from CHRAG said, “we are determined that the opportunities afforded by this site should be exploited to benefit sustainable growth for the future of those who live and work in, and those who visit, Chiswick”.

WHAT’S ON.

Wednesday 26 November 2014 – Saturday 03 January 20155pm – 10pm (timed entrance between 5pm and 8.15pm)Christmas at Kew is back! After last year’s hugely popular experience, Kew Gardens is offering a brand new glittering trail a mile long, guided by snowflakes, which winds its way through breathtaking landscape, creating a magical after dark experience. This will be enhanced by a series of botanically inspired, large scale light installations, created by French de-sign studio TILT. Their work has been seen at Bestival, and the renowned Festival of Lights in Lyon. The 27 individual pieces – the largest of which will be 12 metres by 12 metres – will look like fireworks frozen in time, including luminous lily of the valley and imposing thistles.

Wander between glowing waterside reflections, illuminated fountains and glorious glasshouses, as Kew’s stunning ar-chitecture and towering tree canopies are brought to life and drenched in Christmas colour. A shimmering tunnel of lights, twinkling holly bushes, Christmas trees festooned with lit up presents and plumes of fire dancing to music inspired by The Nutcracker in-front of the iconic Palm House, make this one of the most Christmassy affairs in town. Not to mention ro-mantic – visitors can steal kisses at ‘mistletoe moments’ – a secluded spot bathed in fairy lights and bedecked in mistletoe.

Keep warm under the stars with a mulled wine, spiced ci-der or hot chocolate, as well as roasting chestnuts, toasted marshmallows and other sumptuous traditional fayre. Kew’s tastefully curated shops at Victoria Plaza and White Peaks are the perfect place to pick up unique gifts for the whole family.

There’s lots of fun to be had for the whole family both day and night. Father Christmas will be waiting for the children in his Snowflake Grotto, and a Victorian Carousel, family rides, and an outdoor adventure playground can be found by White Peaks Cafe. For Christmas at Kew visitors, a specially reduced entry price for an adult day visit to Ke w Gardens (under 17’s go free during the day) can be purchased in addi-tion to your trail ticket.

To create this wonderful event, Kew Gardens is once again teaming up with entertainment promoter Raymond Gubbay, in collaboration with design team Culture Creative.Adam Farrar, Kew’s Head of Venue Hire and Events says: ‘After the success of last year’s Christmas trail, we have pro-duced an after dark sensation that is even more beautiful, de-signed to really get you in the Christmas spirit. If you missed out on this much heralded night-time experience first time round, or if you loved what you saw and are curious about the new trail and the spectacular TILT light installations, wrap up warm, and head down to Kew Gardens, where you will see the landscape as never before.’

Fuller’s Inns, the London pre-mium pub company, today announced a multi-phase rela-tionship with Harlequins that will deliver significant benefits to Harlequins Members at local Fuller’s pubs. There will be a number of events, all varying in format, across six key Full-er’s pubs, giving Harlequins Members exclusive access to players and coaches. These events will be supported by a series of offers and promotions in the pubs that are exclusive to Members. The event series starts on 4th December at The Cabbage Patch in Twickenham with an ‘Evening with…’ style event with a number of players, giv-ing attendees the chance to ask any question they like. This in-timate evening is limited to an audience of 70 people and tick-ets are available to Harlequins Members and Fuller’s pub patrons. This will be followed by a series of other events throughout the season allowing Members to get up close and personal with their favourite Harlequins players.Members will also benefit from exclusive promotions in the six key Fuller’s’ sites - The Cab-bage Patch inTwickenham, The Prince Blücher in Twickenham, The Royal Oak in Isleworth, The Turk’s Head in Twickenham, The Prince’s Head in Rich-mond and The Admiral Nelson in Whitton – that include 15% discount off food and drink (excluding RFU event days and Harlequins home matchdays), kids eating free (accompanied by a bespoke children’s menu), preferential rates on function packages and the chance to win exclusive Fuller’s’ expe-riences.Jonathon Swaine, Managing Director of Fuller’s Inns, said: “I am a life-long fan of Har-lequins, so it is a privilege for

not only Fuller’s Inns but for myself to be associated with this iconic club. Fuller’s pubs have always had an affinity with rugby, with it often being a key reason for our customers to come to our pubs.“As London’s oldest brew-er and with our heart in West London, it is important to us to forge and maintain strong alle-giances with the icons on our doorstep. I am looking forward to working closely with Harle-quins, this it should be a great partnership for our pubs.”Imogen Gaunt, Harlequins Head of Marketing and Com-munications, added: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Fuller’s Inns and to be able to offer these excellent benefits to our loyal Members as well as welcome members of the Full-er’s family to Harlequins.“Both Harlequins and Full-er’s Inns have a long history in London, with a particular local focus and we’re looking forward to beginning a long re-lationship together.”

Just like his batting, Keith Ar-mistead refused to budge, but in the end a replacement was found that most people were happy with!

Keith Armistead had been chairman of Kew CC for thir-teen years, and had put in many hours of administration and in-telligent leadership on a volun-teer basis. Despite the views of many that Kew CC should be content with being champions of the Thames Valley League, he spearheaded the application to the Home Counties League this autumn after the 1st XI’s exciting league win last sum-mer. It was eventually refused, although that story may not be over yet. Keith oversaw the club win the league in 2006 as well as last season in 2014, and can be very proud of the progress and achievements of the Club since 2001, but finally there was a groundswell with-in the club that wanted change and a popular new chairman was found in the shape of Pe-ter Berg. Keith Armistead ac-cepted his non-election at the AGM on 22nd November most graciously and has said he is looking forward to spending more time with his many other interests.

A Place to BeSurrounded by four fine pubs, the River Thames, Kew Gar-dens, and blessed with the pres-ence of St. Anne’s Church of

royal patronage, Kew green is a beautiful and attractive place to be. On top of that, it is host, during the summer months, to England’s noblest game, that of cricket. Many a Japa-nese tourist has been confused and bemused by the sight of a game as they pass by on their way to Kew Gardens. While it looks like a classic serene vil-lage scene, the cricket played on Kew Green these days can be of a very high standard, and, particularly on Saturday afternoons, it is taken very se-riously. The location near to London means it attracts many a cricketer, and often from those visiting or permanent-ly arriving from far off places in the southern hemisphere or the Indian sub-continent. Kew Cricket Club puts out 3 or 4 teams on a league Satur-day, and a team on the green every Sunday. The 1st XI are currently champions of the 1st Division of the Thames Valley League! Meanwhile the lower teams mean that there is nearly always a place for players of all levels.

The cricket pavilion was opened in 1964, and, not least because of planning permis-sion limitations, is only a sin-gle storey building and not that impressive from the outside. Nevertheless it has hosted nu-merous nights of fun and fri-volity, as well as sombre crick-et post mortems, and the odd

political storm.

it also has Sky Sports! It has undergone some refur-bishment in recent times mak-ing it more female friendly, and a smooth path down to the club will also make life easier for wheelchairs and cricket trol-leys.

There is a thriving colts section at the club. On Sunday morn-ing the green will be littered with young talent or otherwise. This is an area that Kew cricket club continues to develop de-spite the limitations presented by being on a public common, as opposed to a private ground.

PoliticsThe cricketing success of the club in recent years has pre-sented the club with a serious issue as some members and management ask themselves in what direction the club should be heading, and whether the 1st XI should be trying to play at an even higher level. The beautiful green, a public park in itself, probably provides a clue, and despite the quality of cricket being performed on the green, the Home Counties League committee refused Kew’s application to that league for the 2015 season. Disappointing for some but this issue continues to divide the club as some wish to play, or attempt to play, at the high-est level, almost semi-profes-

sional, while others are more than happy with the status quo. Among other issues, there is a footpath that charmingly in-trudes upon the outfield, which some would like to remove, and do the neighbours really want double site-screens and huge covers on their green?

Kew cricket club is a popular Venue for Corporate cricket, and so, in the height of summer many weekday evenings are filled with these games or with Colts matches.

Cricket the sport provides a wonderful common ground for all walks of life. The pavilion, which sometimes opens on winter weekends as well as in the summer, is a happy meeting place for postmen, internation-al business men, retired entre-preneurs, and car mechanics to name but a few.

Check out the New WebsiteIf you want to find out more about Kew Cricket Club please go to the brand new website. In a drive to recruit players, and get into line with modern technology and social media, www.kewcc.co.uk has been totally revamped and updated, and is now a real-time dynamic domain.. Anyone interested in getting involved as a player or socially, or hiring the club for any purpose in summer or win-ter, or advertising, should pay a visit to it.

Brentford’s winning run was brought to an end in Yorkshire as they were beaten by Huddersfield Town.Sean Scannell scored in the first 20 minutes and a Jake Bidwell own goal just after half time proved to be the winner.Jonathan Douglas reduced he arrears to set up a THRILLING final 20 min-utes but Brentford couldn’t find a way back in to the game. The Bees had plenty of chances across the 90 minutes and may go away feel-ing they deserved a share of the spoils, but it wasn’t to be.The game was a fine spectacle; both teams were better going forward than in defence.Huddersfield rotated the ball well around midfield and were incisive in the final third.Brentford were able to move the ball well at times and had plenty of shots at goal but could not find a way past Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smith-ies more than once. When The Bees could get Alan Judge, Jon Toral and Alex Pritchard linking in attacking areas in the first half, chances resulted. But, at the other end, Nahki Wells and Scannell, playing either side of Grant Holt in the Huddersfield attack, were a thorn in Brentford’s side.Wells had an early shot saved and then blasted in to the side netting after get-ting away in the inside left channel.Judge shot over from 25 yards for The Bees and then fired inches wide after

After the debacle of a missing ref-eree, this match which should have been a Chiswick home fixture was ordered to be played at Hemel Hempstead, on an International day. Each team had players miss-ing, therefore, and took a while to

settle down. Indeed Chiswick had no sub-stitute for the backs, putting them under ex-tra pressure. The Hemel nerves showed early, as having done well to repel a strong Chiswick attack, a panicky kick for touch followed. Ten minutes in, and what seemed to have been taken for granted hap-pened, with inside cen-tre Ray Brooks making a strong break through some flimsy tackling,

A goal in each half for Huddersfield Town as Brentford are beaten

Bidwell had got away on the left and fed Judge, via Toral.

Douglas had a good chance to put Brentford in front 13 minutes in when he got in at the far post and on to a Pritchard cross but he headed wide from close range.Smithies then produced a fine save to turn a deflected Judge shot over the bar after Toumani Diagouraga and Toral had linked well.Brentford had the upper hand after the first 15 minutes but fell behind soon after. The home side moved the ball to the left when left back Jack Robinson was up in support, he fed the ball in to the box and Wells got away from the defence and drilled the ball across, Scannell arrived at the far post to de-liver it back from where it came and in to the net.Brentford reacted well to going be-hind and looked for an immediate re-sponse.Pritchard had a shot blocked and Bid-well’s follow-up from 20 yards was tipped round the post by Smithies. When Tony Craig met a resulting cor-ner soon after, Smithies smothered at the feet of Gray, the ball dropped loose, Toral sliced a volley and Craig’s shot was cleared.Pritchard shot just wide soon after but Huddersfield weathered that storm and started to take control of the match.Tommy Smith had a shot blocked for the home side; David Button saved from Jonathan Hogg and then scram-bled away a Jacob Butterfield effort.Craig blocked a Butterfield shot and

then made a fine tackle when Wells appeared to be clear and on to a Conor Coady pass.

Wells fired a free kick over the bar for the home side but Brentford ended the half well.Pritchard fired a left foot shot inches wide and then, after a fine run, set up Gray in the inside right channel but the striker miss-hit his effort and the chance was gone.Pritchard had another shot blocked early in the second half but The Bees were slow out of the blocks after the break.Wells had a shot deflected wide after getting on to a Holt pass and moments later it was two.Robinson was again the key man, breaking down the left and drilling in a cross that cannoned in to Bidwell at the far post and flew in to the net.Wells could have made it three but shot over and then had a header saved before Button denied Holt and then Coady. The Bees introduced Stuart Dallas early in the half and he shot wide be-fore forcing Smithies in to a save after some nice interplay on the left.Wells again blasted over when well-placed as Huddersfield looked to seal the match but Douglas brought Brent-ford back in to it with 20 to play.Tommy Smith, just on as a substitute, picked the lock and Douglas burst in to the box before SLOTTING past Smithies. That set up a fantastic final act as Brentford, with Nick Proschwitz also on and posing the home defence prob-lems, threw men forward.

It gave the home side chances on the break and Button had to make a su-perb save, making himself big to deny Wells as he went through one-on-one, to keep The Bees in it.Judge sliced a shot wide when he was set up by the increasingly influential Dallas and then forced Smithies in to a fine save from a curling free kick. The Bees were piling on the pres-sure – when a corner dropped loose a Harlee Dean shot was blocked and he then fed Smith but Smithies go down well to keep out the Brentford strik-er’s shot. The Bees went closer still just after – Dallas fed a cross back in, Proschwitz

was crowded out but the ball dropped to Douglas and somehow a combi-nation of Smithies and his defender Smith kept it out.Proschwitz headed wide and thought he had been fouled for a penalty in the dying seconds but referee Eddie Ilderton, who made himself the centre of attention by jumping up and down to mimic Dean before booking the Brentford defender late in proceed-ings, decided no offence had been committed and Brentford’s chance was gone. The game was brought to a close sec-onds later and Brentford’s five match winning run was at an end.

and putting Dan Sutherland in for the first Chiswick try, well-converted by Simon Hallett. With an eager captain, Luca Vannini, back after injury, Chis-wick kept the pressure up, and Hallett soon added three points with another good kick.Hallett got another penalty goal, and then Vannini’s persistence got him a try, again converted. Hemel had a lot of possession, but tended to squander good opportunities.Laughlin, who re-leased Tom Steer to sprint down the right wing and finally find Sutherland in space on the inside.

Hemel came back strongly in the clos-ing five minutes, showing more con-fidence than at any stage before, and they ran in two good tries, the second being converted seconds before the final whistle.

‘A MASSIVE WIN’ – the words of QPR boss Harry Red-knapp following today’s 2-0 victory against Burnley at Lof-tus Road.Goals from Leroy Fer and

QPR manager Harry Redknapp delighted with ‘massive win’ against Burnley...

Charlie Austin, who later saw red for two bookable offences, won it for the hosts, on an af-ternoon when Rob Green again showed his class between the sticks with a number of fine saves. In truth, Rangers just about edged it, clinching a result that lifted Redknapp’s charges out of the bottom three.“It was a massive game for us again today – and a massive win,” the R’s gaffer told www.qpr.co.uk.“We had must-win games

against Villa and Leicester re-cently which we won and we got the victory again today, so we’re delighted.”Redknapp added: “They’re a good side and made us work very hard for the three points.“They were well organised and probably just about edged it in the first half – Rob Green made a couple of great saves; the one from (George) Boyd was in-credible, I was right behind it and it looked in all the way.“But we had chances as well and I was still confident at half-

time.“We started on the front foot and really took it to them.“From the first whistle of the second half we were very posi-tive and the goal was deserved when it arrived.
